E G A S S E M S ’ T N E D I omas PRES Daniel Th

I hope everyone has had a great winter. I have had very few problems out of my herd this winter. Due to the coronavirus the Board has voted to combine our April Convention and Auction and the August Auction. Please mark your calendars for September 11 & 12, 2020 which will still be held at the Cajun Dome.

As most of you know the Board has decided to rent the Cajun Dome until 10 p.m. Friday night where we will have the shrimp boil and an elite auction. Everyone always loves the auction so we felt like this would be exciting. We will also have the raffle right after the shrimp boil and just prior to the auction Friday night. SCI Will be back to measure our antlers for the antler contest and those awards will be presented right after the Saturday auction.

much we appreciate them. We have a few more weeks until the very exciting fawning season begins. Of course, the laidback fall and winter will come to an end on our farm because we bottle feed pretty well all our doe fawns. Every once in a while, some will say to me “that’s a lot of work”. My reply is “yes, but it sure is nice to go in your doe pens and they walk to you instead of away from you”. But, needless to say, it’s not easy nor cheap. It has been my honor to serve as your President this year. My term will end at our Board meeting in April. The Board will be appointing a new President at that time.

We have had some amazing Thank you, sponsors this year. I cannot Daniel Thomas thank them enough. They will be announced Friday night. When you visit their booths it’s very important to let them know how

Bottle Feeding vs. Not – Comparing Benefits of Both It never fails. Every spring Nathan and Christy Ross need to bottle feed a few of their newborn fawns. Although the plan is always not too, if a fawn appears as though it may not make it without intervention, both feel obligated to step in and help. It may not be nature’s way, but it does help save newborn fawn lives at Rockin R’ Whitetails in Mountain Home, Texas. Yet still, Nathan and Christy, who are in their eighth year of deer farming, believe the heartiest youngsters are those raised as naturally as possible. “We love for the mama to be able to take care of them,” Christy said. “But we also want what’s best for that individual fawn. “ “We always try to do it naturally, but it always seems that out of 100 fawns or so, about ten percent of them need intervention for various reasons,” Nathan explained. “Some does have babies and just walk away from them while others are great at raising them. Or sometimes a doe has triplets and one fawn is too small to nurse or receive adequate attention from Mom. Bad, wet weather can also be an issue with umbilical cord infections or can cause bacteria in the soil. Life or death is the determining factor for us (for intervention.)” Other deer farmers, who feel intervention may not be the best course of action, agree that heartier deer are ones raised next to their mother. However, “if they were born weak and sickly, perhaps it wasn’t meant to be that they survive,” offered Chuck Blain of Twin Creek Farm in Fedora, South Dakota. “It’s nature’s way of promoting a stronger herd.” Echoing similar sentiments is Brad Heath of Orion Whitetails in Plainfield, Wisconsin. “There can be many more overall health issues such as scours when you intervene and bottle feed,” Heath said. “I’ve never seen scours in natural settings.” Heath, who has been through 22 successful fawning seasons, also believes naturally raised fawns have stronger survival instincts, and he sincerely appreciates the money, labor and time saved by not bottle feeding.

However, given the high-quality of milk replacers available on the market, many farmers such as Lester Eicher of Springfield Whitetails in Grabill, Indiana, feel bottle-raising their prize inventory and remaining more up-close and personal with their deer is a better way to go. Milk replacers can mimic the same ingredients found in natural milk and may even contain additional vitamins and probiotics. Many milk replacement companies go to great lengths to ensure their products are safe, thoughtfully manufactured and have long shelf lives. Bottle feeding with milk replacers also gives a deer farmer the control over the regularity and amount each fawn receives, ensuring all grow up with the best possible chance to thrive. Many deer farmers also feel that bottle-raised fawns are calmer and much easier to handle as they grow older, but will usually only bottle feed doe fawns, not bucks. However, both Heath and the Ross’s feel that every deer raised naturally will be just as calm as a bottle-fed one, given that you are always around them and caring for them. “Fawns see the interaction and they think it’s normal,” Nathan emphasized. Heath agreed while acknowledging “I’ve sold deer that were not bottle fed and you could feed them treats out of your hands. Put a bottle-fed deer and a non-bottle-fed deer side-by-side, and you can’t tell the difference.” In addition, “bottle feeding has been a trend to increase marketability,” Kristy said. After it’s said and done, whether you bottle feed or not, every successful deer farmer will agree about this: vaccinating does before they deliver fawns. Handsdown this is one the best pieces of advice any deer farmer can give or receive as it gives every fawn a head-start in life, regardless of what lies ahead. Because at the end of the day, every deer farmer wants the same thing. A hearty, healthy producing buck or doe that perpetuates quality genetics and longevity.

DTW Bodacious Every few years in the sport of football, there is a franchise player that stands head and shoulders above the rest. These players include quarterbacks Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, Patrick Mahomes II of the Kansas City Chiefs and Joe Burrow of the LSU Tigers.

By: Gail Veley

Daniel Thomas would like the deer industry to prepare for its next Most Valuable Player – DTW Bodacious. Just like treasured athletes that increase the quality of their team, DTW Bodacious is adding quality to the deer industry perhaps unlike any other before him. “DTW Bodacious is a beautiful two-year-old with an unbelievable and amazingly deep pedigree,” Thomas, owner of Daniel Thomas Whitetails in Springhill, Louisiana said. “Every sire in his pedigree is a super sire, plus the doe lines are among the greatest in the industry.” Having bred close to 80 percent of his does to him this past breeding season, Thomas is looking forward to raising these high-caliber offspring. “I think his two-year-olds are going to be amazing,” he said. Several factors make DTW Bodacious a deer that any breeder would want in their program. These attributes include his 30” wide inside spread with four beautiful drops and his estimated 310” score @ only two years old.

Y R O T S M R A F E AT U R E D F

14

The Next Super Sire! His pedigree consists of: ● DTW Yellow 12, his dam. The dam of DTW Yellow 12 is DTW Red 12, the dam to Hickok (who had an SCI 250” score @ the mere age of one). The dam of DTW Red 12 is “Momma” who has produced three outstanding breeder bucks, T-Rex, Moe and Rolex II. ● The super sire, Gladiator III, included three times. He has more than 2,250 DNA’d proven offspring. ● Super Doe 86C, Gladiator II’s dam appearing three times, with one of those times appearing on Gladiator III’s very bottom side. ● Gladiator II’s dam, Super Doe Brandy, twice. ● Gladiator III’s dam, Super Doe LH Artemis. ● Gladiator III, who has become one of the leading, most soughtafter doe-producing sires in the industry. He has daughters producing all over the U.S. and especially in Texas. At two years old his score was 366” with a 33” inside spread. At four years old, he scored 438” with a 33” inside spread. ● Gladiator XL, who scored 356” @ two years old and at three years old, set a world record main score of 295” as well as a 392 7/8” gross score and has an amazing 39 6/8” inside spread.

● The amazing Maxbo, which had it all, is at the very top of this pedigree as well as in the very bottom. His sons were leading sires on almost every major farm in the U.S. ● Maxbo XL, who scored 252” @ the age of one, 325” @ two years old and 465” @ three years old. ● The Sire of Sires, High Roller with his 480” score, as well as other beautiful sires including Mercedes, Sundance, Fleets Buddy, Little Boomer, Pretty Boy and Max. As a result of his calculated hard work and years of producing some of the best breeder bucks in the industry, Thomas feels that DTW Bodacious has it all. “I have a lot of confidence in him. As you can see, he has an amazing pedigree, beautiful frame, tine length and four beautiful drops with kickers that the whole industry loves,” he said. “Every breeder should seriously consider using DTW Bodacious in their A.I. program. Please contact me to purchase your DTW Bodacious straws. I assure you they won’t last.”

buying and Selling Deer A Must-Keep Checklist Both a seller and buyer of deer need to agree on crucial sale details, in order for the transaction to be as smooth and successful as possible. Just ask two seasoned deer farmers, Daniel Thomas of Daniel Thomas Whitetails in Springhill, Louisiana and Brandon Bollinger of 2 Brothers Whitetails in Loranger, Louisiana. Both will stress how important it is, for seller and buyer alike, to agree beforehand on the best way to get purchased deer from Point A to Point B. The following is a checklist every deer farmer should cut out and keep handy for the future. 1. Determine who is going to transport the deer – the seller or the buyer. If the seller is transporting, agree on the price per loaded mile to do this. Payment terms should also be discussed at this time as well. 2. Use an air-conditioned trailer, if possible, and agree to avoid transporting deer when the temperature will be higher than 65 degrees for the day. (Cold weather is generally not a detrimental factor when shipping deer.) 3. Agree on which party is responsible for furnishing the transport anesthesia drugs as well as the reversal drugs. Buyers must also be informed as to what drugs the deer have been given in the last 45 days, as it could affect the potency of any trailering drugs given. 4. Determine if the seller or buyer is responsible for vaccinating, worming as well as for providing shipping antibiotics, which can help avoid an unwanted and contagious case of shipping fever. 5. Remember to microchip and ear tag every alternative livestock sold, as this is a requirement for transportation according to The Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Within 10 days of transferring alternative livestock, sellers are required to submit an alternative livestock notification form with microchip and ear tag numbers of all sold alternative livestock in order to remain in compliance with state law. 6. Agree on when purchased deer become the sole possession of the buyer, and the seller is no longer responsible for the outcome of the sale. 7. Verify that Louisiana Department of Agriculture pen numbers are exchanged at the time of the sale. 8. Determine who will be darting the deer at the time of the sale and, if a mistake is made, who is responsible. “Believe me, this will make your life so much easier,” Thomas said. “Many issues and problems can be avoided by simply agreeing on things ahead of time.”

Habitat Enhancement

Create Deer-Friendly Refuge, Terrain

By: Gail Veley

Increasing the number of free-range deer, wild turkey and other types of wildlife on your property may be as simple as rearranging the layout of your land. While this may be a popular subject to talk about, few private landowners have the time, equipment or expertise to make it happen. Hiring a land management company for this task can be one of the most lucrative and smartest investments you will ever make.

to increase the likelihood that your property will thrive with native wildlife and provide them with a much-needed refuge. While land enhancement projects might produce highly desired short-term results, it can take up to two years to see the full fruition of these efforts.

“Natural habitat in America is decreasing all the time and is happening all over the place,” said Derek Borkholder, manager for a habitat enhancement and land management company in Bremen, Indiana. “If you enhance your own property you won’t have to worry about what is going on around you. From a resale perspective, people are always willing to pay more for an enhanced property that attracts wildlife, should you ever decide to sell.”

Land management companies can provide additional services as well, such as regular year-round mowing, hunting blind installation and camera installation on trees or posts to catch and monitor wildlife activity. However actively managing a property ceases from October through December during the hunting season, and usually starts up once again in the beginning of the year.

Well-equipped land management companies can cover all aspects of habitat enhancement from eliminating less productive trees and vegetation and replacing them with perhaps younger, more desirable trees, vegetation and tall grasses. Taking into account the lay of your land and the direction of the wind, land management companies specialize in physically accessing your property, while addressing your goals for attracting wildlife. Aerial view drawings are typically created along with recommendations for making your property align with these goals. A “vision” for your property begins to take shape.

Land enhancement projects can range in size from a 20-acre parcel of land all the way up to 250 acres or even larger. Customers of land enhancement projects are generally very happy with the end results. “The feedback has been very positive,” said Leon Miller, owner of the same land management company managed by Borkholder. “There is a science behind it. You need the right ideas and approach, so you make the very most of what you have.”

Some recommendations include building hunting stands and planting food plots near the edge of your land, while creating a sanctuary in the middle of your property for wildlife such as deer to bed down, feel safe and hide at night. “When that deer gets up to go eat, it’ll head right toward the food plot,” Borkholder said. “If it ever gets spooked and runs off, it’ll just go deeper into your property.” Deer populations may increase by 10 or 20 times on your property with the right habitat enhancement. As part of the enhancement, older trees are harvested to make way for young ones. Additional attractants such as man-made ponds, acorn trees, ever greens, white pines and spruce may be added
