Brainstorming Before starting with the research process , to explore the areas of opportunities in workspaces a brainstorming of ideas was required. Hence this method was used to explore everything and anything about work and sense of touch

Fly On the Wall This tool was used while researching upon how people react to their surroundings while they are inside the library premises. This technique was easily adaptive to the libraries as one could just sit and observe day long .

It was an important tool as it helped to : • • • •

Know basic body gestures while sitting ,reading ,working.

Understand how people respond to the ambience of place Know what is exactly required for a person who studies for consecutive five to six hours.

Know what type of lights is needed for a specific place.

Contextual Enquiry •

This tool was mainly used while people were relaxing out from the reading rooms.

•

A set of around 17 questions were prepared and were asked verbally and their responses were recorded to get an overview of what they feel about their library .

•

The questions were based on mostly their like and dislikes of the place as it gave a one sided insight as of what they feel about the place.

•

Fewer questions were based on furniture as the people didn’t actually knew what they exactly needed .

Cultural Probe & Image Tool •

This was the final tool that was required while researching specifically on Noida Public Library.

•

Around ten people were given a set of questions that focused primarily on the furniture of the reading room.

•

Derived from previous research analysis the questionnaire also consisted of various images of various types of chair that could help to give insight of what is the collective need of the people .

Jalvaayu Vihar Community

Overview

Jalvaayu Vihar is a colony in Noida sec 22 C-block. It was designed to be used only by the members of the society but gradually as outsiders released the lack of libraries in Noida region they started exploring it was soon declared open as a public library with fee of 4000 per year as a subscription.

Interiors Library is equipped with: • More than 1000 books in 40 racks.

• 30 seats • Air conditioning • Adequate lighting :4 tube lights • Quiet Environment to study for long.

• Racks with shutters to keep away the dust.

Air force related magazines were lying all around the table as most of the people of the society were retired naval officers.

Chairs present in JVCC library are simple cushion padded cantilevered chairs.

Main seating has dimension of 500 x 400mm .

Chair has a height of 800 mm from the base level .

It is made up of tubular steel with padding of 350 x 400 mm attached by counter sunk bolt & screws externally .

It appeared to be cheap at first sight as their were multiple bending marks and ripples which depicted that not much attention has been given while bending the rods.

Seating was made by attaching a piece of foam with deep blue and cool green coloured to the main wire framed structure of chair through regular philips screws .

There was just one central table of 15 ft x 4 ft with a centrally located magazine or newspaper holder.

Table was made up of cedar wood finished with varnishing. It was 1.5 inches thick with filleted edges.

Place had four tube lights which were enough for evening and morning session.

• Other : Library has various posters related to Indian air and marine defence.

According to people JVCC has quite a decent library . Although it doesn't has such wide database like any other public library but is still suitable for them as they moreover prefer the ambience of the place .

Local youngsters visit there to collect information or to just sit there and work .

The timings of library can also be extended according to user needs .

People like the existing furniture as they don’t spend like hours sitting there .

Because of good maintenance there were no other problems like smell or dirt.

Ratio of table to Height of an average youngster was proper enough to sit and work continuously 2 hours .

Padded back was comfortable but after and hour it felt back pain as it was a bit hard.

Overview

Memozin is an web based library platform located in sector 10 block C-119 Noida . It consists multiple computers where one can issue books online at a very competitive price in comparison to other book stores. They also sell e-books online at very affordable price.

People who visit here are usually students and youngsters who are more interested in completing their projects and e-reading.

Timings are : 11:00 am to 7:00 pm

Chairs present in Memozin library are basically the hieght adjustable chairs .

Seating is 40 x 35 cm wide and head rest portion is of around 30 cm.

Near the pelvic region a soft padding is also provided that helps in better seating.

On reviewing people about the chair and if it is ergonomic or not they responded that these chairs were very comfortable and easy to sit on and one dosent feels having pain or drowsy while they are sitting on it for hours.

Desks :

Desks that were available were the regular computer tables with small workspace while reading / working offline. •

Lightining :

Apart from having artificial lighting place had black tainted glass windows that made place glow in the morning and afternoon hours .

Overview

Library in Pearl Noida ,offers a wide range of design associated books that are related to the genre of fashion business communication product design and architecture. It focuses on a wider seating area than the bookshelf's itself such that one can come and work there.

Chairs in Pearl academy are 33 inches high where focus has been paid to vibrant colours and not specifically seating that is 16” x 15” wide and doesn’t fits more than average size .

The colours are too bold and eye catching that creates a sense of disturbance in mind and distracts the focus.(acc. To people interviewed).

Chairs despite being in the library area aren’t comfortable to sit on for not more than one hour as back rest is too low that aches the back .

There were 4 table of 10 ft by 3 ft which were sufficient enough for two people to work simultaneously. They are wide enough and stable to work on. • Lightning Fixtures : Place has enough lighting for daytime or during the evening hours to work on.

Overview

Avant Garde library is located in sector 21 Block D-3 Noida Jalvaayu vihar. It is a small space where photography of books or interiors is strictly prohibited. It seems like a narrow lane where at one end one can issue books and on other one can sit and read them. It is maintained by an old person reciding in the society . Library is built inside the persons house area and also contains school books .

Chairs in Avant Garde are the high seating type stools where one can comfortably sit and work .

Because of being placed at height it restrains the user to work It is provided with footrest placed at an adequate height which makes the user easy to sit on.

Chair was thermoformed by plastic and didn’t had and technical back rest .

According to people they usually come to sit and just work Youngsters come there to issue books related to science and other competitive exams .

They sit and study there and like doing that as it is a quiet place.

There were 4 tables of around 3 ft by 3 ft that was eligible for an individual and gave a prviate space to study . • Lightning Fixtures : Despite being small the place had sufficient amount of lights to work on and study .Usually Led lights were used.

Overview

Noida Public Library is generally considered the central library of Noida. It is located in sector15 BBlock Noida. Its database consists of around 50,000 books which keeps on increasing as people tend to submit their old unused books.

User audience is usually youngsters who come to prepare here for exams like MBA, civil services etc.

Demographics • People of age 18-25 usually visit here .

• Usually students come who have to prepare for competitive exams • Most of them are Unemployed

• Place is generally located in quiet area so preferred for long sitting hours .

Two different segments- Book room and the reading room which is charged ₹10 for a day There were 6 different reading rooms that accommodate 50 students in a room.

In the book store area there are long benches to sit on and read novels.

Benches are provided in the middle area surrounded by rooms filled with racks of books.

Chairs in Noida public library were themed in red and black colour made up of bended steel.

Upper backrest had a plastic .

People didn’t felt comfortable sitting for hours over there and had problems like back pain and were uncomfortable Main seating had soft cusion padding covered with a red grainy and dirt cotton cloth.

It had been years since furniture here has not been updated and the people who came to study had problems in that .

Avg. people were of 5’5’’ ft height and they founded the height of seat too low to sit on and made their legs pain.

Near the book store area there were comfortable benches to sit and read novels .

Improper maintenance of chairs

Tables : • There were 6 different reading rooms that had same arrangement of furniture shown alongside . • There was no space to keep bags and they had to keep on desks.

Lightning Fixtures : Place had dim lights as half of them were not working other lights present there weren't enough for the room

Why Noida Public Library ?  Noida Public Library has wide scope design intervention at many places in the premises.  Other Libraries are usually private and well maintained but Noida Public is completely dependent on funds as it is NGO supported .  Hardly any thought is given to repairing or maintenance as they have little amount to invest into.  Despite being a Central Library of the city and being used the most the state of furniture is really pathetic.  If any low cost product is designed it could help the library to maintain its economy.

Selected Furniture : Chairs Upon analysing the current scenario of library maximum amount of potential lies under tables, chairs, and lights.

Chairs can be reinvented because :    

They have major problem of maintenance Within a year due to regular usage the fabric gets torn away.

They have hard uncomfortable back structure that creates back pain.

Existing padding is too less and creates uncomfortability.

About design ‌ Final concept of chair is designed in such way that a person could easily manage his workspace by keeping important book or papers aside in the side self .This solves the major problem of students in the library as they easily tend to loose their important papers while working and no matter wherever they keep on table they are not able to find it on the right time.

Costing is greatly reduced after the implication of minimal use of material by including just interior grade ply-board and steel pipes for the structure.

Existing chairs didn’t even provided comfort ability when used for long .

My design along with utility provides good back support and a contemporary look as in todays fashion.
