Design Brief To design a "product or a collection" on the concept of sustainability, based on "Reduce, Reuse & Recycle" design methodology. Primary criteria includes the materials used, process in which the product has been manufactured. Using the 3 R's Methodology students can come up with the ideas to minimize the volume of waste generated.

What is sustainability ?

Sustainability can be defined as the meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The concept of sustainability is comprised of three pillars: economic, environmental and social - also known informally as profits, planet and people.

In early human history, the use of fire and desire for specific foods may have altered the natural composition of plant and animal communities.[29] Between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago, Agrarian communities emerged which depended largely on their environment and the creation of a "structure of permanence.

Why Sustainability ?

• To end poverty and hunger • For Better standards of education and healthcare - particularly as it pertains to water quality and better sanitation

• To achieve gender equality • Sustainable economic growth while promoting jobs and stronger economies • All of the above and more while tackling the effects of climate change, pollution and other environmental factors that can harm and do harm people's health, livelihoods and lives.

• To improve the health of land, air, and sea.

About Company Green the map is an organization which was set up by the NGO Swechha in Delhi. The forte of company is : • To raise awareness on environmental issues .

• To create job opportunities with reasonable wages for the disadvantaged people.

Swechha has grown over the decade to work on the issues of sustainable development and social change and has impacted considerably locally, nationally and internationally.

Green the Map has stores in Delhi and Mumbai as well as partnerships with other retailers both nationally and internationally. The journey of Green the map started in the year 2009 and we have been extracting the best out of waste since.

Story behind the origination of Green The Map Vimlendu Jha , founder of Swechha was making a documentary on waste disposable in Delhi landfills. Upon researching he realized that there are many materials like plastic bottles, paper, cans etc are discarded off without giving a second thought. Despite being the real environmentalists, the presence and efforts of rag pickers and waste collectors are neither recognized nor awarded .

So there he arrived to a question that :

Model of Sustainability : Upcycling Up-cycling is the process of re- using old products to create products of better design and value, thus eliminating the concept of waste.

The term up-cycling is relatively new, as it was coined in 1994 by Reiner Pilz, stating that “what we need is up-cycling where old products are given more value not less.”

•

It began to gain traction in the mid 90s.

•

Then in 2002, William McDonough and Michael Braungart’s book ‘Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things’ brought the term to the society, and solidified its use in pop culture.

Sustainability Model of Swechha.

Cradle to Cradle is a unique approach to design and science, created by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart and described in their book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.

Some key points from the book are : •

The goal of up-cycling is to prevent wasting potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones.

This reduces the consumption of new raw materials when creating new products.

•

Reducing the use of new raw materials can result in a reduction of energy usage, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions.

Benefits of Upcycling : • Up-Cycling helps reduce CO2 emissions by using old materials instead of new ones for every ton of discarded textiles used again, 20 tons of CO2 is prevented from entering the atmosphere.

• It promotes sustainable innovation and creativity.

• It also helps preserve our precious resources • Outcomes of the final product are something new and mesmerising to look at.

• Durability may not be that great but still they are quite effective in comparison to recycled products which might look a bit dull and torn off.

Organizational Strength • It has created a lot of opportunities for the unorganized sector of labour by providing them full time jobs.

• Not only it provides jobs but also arranges for vocational training for workers.

• Ensure Transparency and Accountability : It provides a clear information about the organization on the social sites.

• It ensures fair trading practices.

• Workers in organization get their wages on time and are fair enough and follow the standard wage laws.

• Strictly against any child labour or forced labour • They also provide provide opportunities for less skilled employees to learn from others.

Review and increase wages appropriately as employees increase the level of their skills.

To design a Product/Collection for the category: Corporate gifting space or Conference Solutions, using discarded materials like- Tyre tubes, tetra packs, Cans, wood waste and PET bottles.

What is Corporate gifting ?

Corporate Gift can be defined as a token of thanks on a recipient by a business or a company. Presenting a gift to customers is a relatively common public relation strategy. The company may take the form of a cash gift ,or include some tangible product or even an all-expence paid vacation for employee and his /her family.

Company gift allows the company to express appreciation for the relationship that exists between a given party and the company.

Companies of all sizes and in varying circumstances employ this approach of corporate gifting.

Materials Study.

Denim fabric

Denim is a strong , durable fabric constructed out of a rugged tightly woven twill in which the blue/indigo yarns are the lengthwise or “warp” threads (parallel to the selvage ) whereas the white yarn runs across the fabric width (weft threads).

There are five types of denims : • Dry Denim • Selvage denim • Stretch denim • Poly denim • Ramie Cotton Denim Original Denim is a 100% cotton serge material ,but today it is available in a variety of material and colours. Today denims are customised with other colours with white opposing thread ,producing a rainbow of shades.

Why is it a threat to environment ?

Cotton Production : • Denim is an 100% cotton made product.

Around 1.5lbs of cotton is needed to produce a single pair of jeans .1500 gallons of water is needed to grow 1.5lbs of cotton for a single pair of jeans.

• This causes an enormous Impact on the environment as the course of rivers is altered to be able to irrigate the cotton field, soil is becoming very salty, as the evaporating water leaves its salt content behind, an effect which is increased by the heavy use of fertilizers.

• The application of pesticides in order to save the cotton crops is again a threat to land quality.

Dyeing of warp yarns : • The textile industry is unsustainable to our planet, where denim being the worst.

Denim implies the use of Indigo(containing chemicals such as cadmium, mercury, lead )which when washed by water makes the yarns stronger which in turn creates a massive impact on the water resources where it is used. • Before dyeing the cotton yarns have to be cleaned by sodium hydroxide and detergents in order to remove natural hydrophobic substances and bleached using sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. The washing causes water pollution.

Social impact • In 2011 telegraph published an article referring to the denim industry in India and China.

According to the article, the pressure group, “Labour Behind the Lable” claims companies blast denim with sand in order to achieve a worn look, with the danger being that silica dust can get into the workers’ lungs, and subsequently contract Silicosis, (a lung disease caused by inhaling particles of silica , quartz or slate.)

Leather is tanned animal skin or hide that is rendered and rotproof and sent to tanneries to get the processes product.

While processing it has to undergo certain chemical and mechanical treatments .

Chemical processing endow it with its colour, suppleness, fullness, etc., while mechanical processing include shaving (to produce the desired thickness), sammying (to remove any water still present) and setting-out (to stretch the leather and correct any foldingrelated defects).

There are four broad varieties of leather: • Top Grain • Full Grain • Split Leather • Bonded Leather Leather can be made from cows, pigs, goats, and sheep; exotic animals such as alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos; and even dogs and cats, who are slaughtered for their meat and skin

Why isn’t it Eco-Friendly ?

• Raising of livestock requires a lot of resources such as pastureland, water, and fossil fuels. Animals on factory farms produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population, without the benefit of waste treatment plants.

• Turning skin into leather requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based. All of these can result in great amount of pollution.

• People who work in and live near tanneries suffer too. Many die from cancer possibly caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to process and dye the leather.

Jute fabric

Jute known as the ‘golden fibre’ is the second most important naturally occurring fibre after cotton. Jute is mainly grown in the Bengal (India & Bangladesh) region of Ganges delta. Jute is extracted from the bark of white jute plant.

Jute Fibre is long ,soft , shiny with a length of 1-4 m and diameter 17-20 microns. Jute fibres are composed primarily of the plant materials cellulose (major component of plant fibre) and lignin (major components of wood fibre). The fibres can be extracted by either biological or chemical retting processes.

Jute is extensively used for sacking for agriculture goods as well as being used increasingly in rigid packaging and reinforced plastic and is replacing wood in pulp and paper.

Why is it Eco-Friendly ?

• Jute is a low-cost crop that can be grown on waste-lands ,including tidal areas and alkaline soils.

• Growth Cycle of jute is very short ,typically 4-6 months.

• It has a inner core with high-yield cellulose, making jute an ideal source of material for pseudo-woods and paper production.

• The carbon footprint is low. Jute is a fast growing field crop with high carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation rate. Jute plants clean the air by consuming large quantities of CO2, which is the main cause of the greenhouse effect. One hectare of jute plants can consume about 15 tons of CO2 from atmosphere and release about 11 tons of oxygen in the 100 days of the jute-growing season. Studies also show that the CO2 assimilation rate of jute is several times higher than trees. (Inagaki, 2000).

• As there is crop rotation so little or no pesticide is used while farming.

• Water Footprint is also very low as the plant is mainly rainfed unlike cotton.

Glass holders made out of waste wood, where glass will be made up of discarded beer and wine bottles.

Bags and sleeves made out of savaged leather and leatherette along with jute sacks.

Mobile Docking station made out of waste aluminium can and wood. It also serves a purpose of a pen stand when not in use.

Carry bags made out of tire tube strips and jute base

Sand clock made out of cutting the base of wine bottles and fusing them together.

Memo Pad made out of sticking waste cans on waste corrugate sheets of cardboard , basically upcycling waste writing pads.

Pen stand with other desktop utility holder .Made out of aluminium cans.

Diary case for A5 size notebooks . Material would be tire tubes stitched in strips with a thick base like cardboard or foam board.

About Concept :

Sleeve for iPad (10.7 & 12.9) and apple pencil Product is designed for the high end corporate gifting solutions. In todays era people are shifting to more compact and feasible solutions for carrying data .

Tablets are currently the pinnacle of the mobile industry. People prefer carrying tablets over their laptops as they are lightweight ,sleek, and easy to carry. Eco-Friendly sleeve solves majorly two aspects : 1.

Being made up of materials like jute , leather and denim it gives a new life to these classic materials which are actually apt to give a professional feel to it.

2.

Product solves a big problem of keeping apple pencil. There are several sleeves available in the market but there are very few which have a assorted space to keep it. Either the dedicated pocket is not ergonomic or if it is available , it is super expensive .

This sleeve has pocket right beside the tablet such that not only apple pencil but any stylus could easily fit in .

Prototyping

First Prototype The idea was to check the dimensions in actual scale and the usability of product. (i) Jute will be stitched on Back side of the sleeve (ii) Same Cloth will be stitched on Front side also. (iii) Flap will be constructed out of waste leather. (iv) Inner surface will be layered using foam and denim cloth.
