Green Thoughts and Affirmative Action I sat upon the shore fishing, With the arid plain behind me Shall I at least set my lands in order? The Waste Land by T S Eliot

I was asked to write a few lines and I didn’t know where to start from. I don’t believe in writing for the sake of writing, nor do I want to write about things that I don’t do in life currently. And nothing could be better than talking about a “Green” act which stirred my soul recently. You must all have watched or read about the devastating floods in Jammu & Srinagar last week. My sister and family along with friends and families (Group of 18) were stranded in Srinagar for more than a week facing the Nature’s fury and wrath. They had heart rending tales to recount when they managed to reach Delhi on Sunday. After days of agony and near death experiences, their escape wouldn’t have been possible without the countless acts of kindness from Kashmiris who not only rescued them, but fed them and gave protection in their homes while the entire state machinery was making a mockery of the situation. I won’t get into the details but felt I should share with you a singular act of kindness out of the many, which will remain green in their minds for the rest of their lives. When the water levels were rising and the Group was staring at imminent death, Wazeer, a young local in his early thirties appeared from nowhere, grabbed them by their hands, put them in a boat and carried them to the safety of his bungalow. While they were still shivering with fear, he put them at ease by placing his 8 months old baby into their arms and making them play with him—a poignant gesture after having gone thru a macabre situation. He kept the group of 18 people in his home for three days, fed them and looked after them as if they were his own family. He took the risk of driving a truck himself on the last day with them inside to Srinagar airport probably through three or four feet of water all around. Such acts of courage and compassion are a rarity nowadays and I am deeply moved even as I write this. My message to all of us is to “Be Green from Inside” which in turn would reflect outwardly as compassion towards Mother Earth and humanity. Do wash away your biases towards gender, religion, colour, caste and creed and treat everyone as equal; fuel up Green thoughts in your mind. It will be good to recall the powerful three “Da’s” from Brihadaranya Upanishad made ever so popular by its mention in “What the Thunder Said” section of the poem (you know which one, if not google it)---DATTA, DAYADHVAM, DAMYATA—Datta (to give), Dayadhvam (Compassion) and Damyata (Self-Control).
