PREFACE The DULT Fellowship Program is awarded to give fresh undergraduates’ and graduates’ an opportunity to broaden their professional knowledge and experience by acquainting themselves with concepts in the Urban Mobility Sector.

The privilege to work as a Transit Fellow at the Directorate of Urban Land Transport has been a good opportunity for me to deepen my knowledge and interests in Sustainable Urban Mobility. Being an Architect and now an Urban Planner through the Fellowship Program I was able to understand the cities through a powerful lens of government. It allowed me to understand the combination of urban design, urban planning and transport planning expertise together and understand the working of city level planning projects.

During the Fellowship Program I was assigned to work on identifying Cycling Network of Bangalore from Space Syntax Analysis, studying and analyzing Cycling Network of Davangere under the Cycles 4 Change Challenge. Under the Parking Policy 2.0, 5 wards in west of Bangalore was assigned for surveying the present parking condition in those wards. As per the NMT Initiatives, the Green-links Programme for Bellary the roads and junctions was assigned to design and detail at the conceptual level. Another project involved the study of an old neighbourhood in Bangalore. This project gave me an opportunity to study the local streets in the Halasuru neighbourhood, conducting surveys, mapping the streets with respect to land use, activities and mobility.

Overall, the exposure to projects over a span of 6 months has developed my urban research, urban design and drawing and surveying skills.

BENGALURU

SPACE SYNTAX

To understand the existing road patterns of the city spatial analysis is studied through the Space Syntax Method. Space Syntax is a practice for evaluating spatial network of a city which involves the interaction of people with streets and buildings. The alignment of the street network in a city, the built masses and the movement of people are all interrelated to each other. The movement of people can be predicted with respect to their adaptation to the spaces and street network in the city. Space Syntax is based few theories and techniques for analysis which measures each and every street segment with respect to the other segments.

Bengaluru being the 3rd most populous city in the country has seen tremendous growth overtime.

Known as the IT Capital of India, the number of people accessing the work places is high and the transportation aspect of the city needs to be taken care of.

The city has Metro, BMTC, Auto and Taxi services in a limited area making people struggle with fist and last mile connectivity issues which leads to the use private vehicles. Thus the government is striving to balance the rising population demand several measures are taken for the development of the city.

One such move taken by the government is encouraging the use of cycles instead of private vehicles through the NMT Initiatives. The ‘Cycle Day’ initiative by DULT was successful and has led to develop cycling in the city under the Cycles 4 Change Challenge by Smart Cities Mission, MOHUA. Currently, Cycling tracks are operational on the Outer Ring road from Silk Board Junction to Lowry Junction as a pilot stretch and the rest of the tracks shall be laid eventually based on the different methods of analysis as per the city requirements.

Fig. 1 & Fig. 2 - Every segment in the road network is analyzed wrt its length in the Segment Analysis and wrt its angle in Angular Segment Analysis. For the Bengaluru road network we understand that every segment is small and hence it appears blue . Bengaluru is a radial city and thus we observe cyan and green street network as per the angle of the road in the Angular Segment Analysis.

The dense road network in core city, old residential neighbourhood areas makes it appear red. The new developments is seen in gradients of orange as it is less integrated. CYCLE 4 CHANGE CHALLENGE

BENGALURU The main vision is to make a livable and sustainable city by bringing cycling culture as reliable, safe mode of transport for first and last mile connectivity for the city of Bengaluru. The major principles considered for cycling is Mobility and Comfort. Identifying the important nodes which act as Origin and Destination like educational hubs, work places, commercial urban and transit centers. For the consistent usage of cycles comfort is the key factor. Comfort conditions can be provided by taking care of conflict points with vehicular traffic by adding elements like traffic calming measure, continuous surveillance/ properly lit.

Through Online surveys data has been collected from cyclists and their regular cycling routes have been marked in the pink as shown in the map beside and used as a reference for routes used by cyclists in the city. Fig. 5 The cycling routes have to be determined on the basis of the requirement of the users in different parts of the city for different uses. The purpose for cycling is classified as Cycling to Work, Education, Recreation, Shopping and to Transit Stations.

The approach of Whole to Parts was considered to get the overall idea of the cycling districts routes and thus the Cycling routes were determined considering all the 6 Cycling Districts. The cycling routes shall be given a bifurcation based on the colors and routes shall be marked the same. Cycling to Work - Purple, Cycling to School - Red, Cycling to Recreation - Green, Cycling to Transit Stations - Orange and Cycling to Shop - Blue.

The overlap of all the layers of cycling routes shall give the overall routes for the Cycling Districts The major Lakes of Bangalore identified based on its size and attractiveness. Through Q GIS output shortest path between the those Lakes is determined by the Shortest Path Analysis identified in Blue Lines Fig . 7 The major Green Spaces of Bangalore identified based on its size and attractiveness. Through Q GIS output shortest path between the those Green Spaces is determined by the Shortest Path Analysis identified in Light Green Lines Fig . 8 The overlay routes of both the Cycle to Lakes and Cycle to Green Spaces is considered for the Cycling for Recreation within the Cycling Districts. Few major nodes in the city where cyclists footfall accessing the landmarks is high like GKVK Campus, IISc Campus as Cycling to Education ; Turahalli Forest as Cycling to Recreation, Peenya Industrial Area as Cycling to Work are identified and the shortest cycling path from their respective metro stations are calculated through the shortest routes are determined by the Shortest Path Analysis on Q GIS. The over lap of the routes from the Online survey data(Pink lines) and the Q GIS software Shortest Path Analysis is considered for the laying of Cycle Tracks.

The areas lying within the Outer Ring Road are considered for the implement ion of Dedicated and Shared bicycle lanes. This area is delineated into Cycling Districts based on the consideration of grids with few parameters like Real Trip Data by PBS Operator, Crowd Sourced Data, Transit Nodes, Employment Centers, Educational Hub, Readiness of Infrastructure, City Level Attractors (Parks and Lakes). These parameters were specified with values in order to determine the weights obtained by the overlay and to determine the area for sustainable network development.

The Land use and the potential magnetic centers that attract lot of people on a daily basis are prioritized.

The Land Use for Educational Institutions defined in orange patches and the respective prominent schools and colleges are marked under the Cycling to Education Routes Fig. 10 The Land Use for Industrial areas defined in purple patches and the respective prominent industrial clusters are marked under the Cycling to Work with buffer of 1000m from the work nodes. Based on grid scores, areas were delineated bounded by major roads. The area scoring the maximum, representing the highest demand of infrastructure and requires the development of cycle tracks, bounded by major roads were considered for cycling district boundary delineation. The area under Bengaluru Smart City is Cycling District 1 and the rest 5 Cycling Districts are numbered based on the demand of the cyclists and user needs. Fig 6 Fig. 6

Halasuru, a settlement for more than thousand years in Bengaluru. The neighbourhood of Halasuru has a strong cultural and heritage base since ancient times as the development took place around the famous Someshwara temple. The neighbourhood has an influence of the Cantonment area and Jogupalya which is a part of Halasuru. The city level Landmarks in Halasuru is the Someshwara temple and the Halasuru Lake, presently another pull factor to this neighbourhood is the Halasuru Metro Station which has resolved the connectivity issues to the other parts of the city.

The walking distance of 500m in dark green and the cycling distance 1000m from the station is captured. Fig. 16 The overlay of the most chosen Choice and Integration Analysis and the walking and cycling routes is done. Fig 17

Nala Road

The Cambridge Road is one of the major roads in Cambridge Layout beside Jogupalya. It starts from Halasuru Police Station near Halasuru Metro corridor up to Old HAL Airport Road. It predominantly has schools and retail shops .The schools that are here are famous at city level and neighbourhood level. The aim of this project is to make this a Child Friendly Street. Fig 20 RK Mutt Road is named after the Rama Krishna Mata which existed previously which is now converted to a school. The road runs right from the Halasuru metro station to up to the mouth of Ulsoor Lake. Few buildings which belongs to olden Halasuru settlement still exist in between the thick residential cluster a with temples, matas and shrines all along the road. Fig .21

The most preferred routes are the Swami Vivekananda Road, Chinmaya Mission Road, Cambridge Road, Jogupalya Main Road, Bazaar Road, Car Street, R K Mutt Road, Sadashiva Mudaliar Road, Main Channel Road and Naala Road. R K Mutt Road has numerous perpendicular road crossing it . Thus one of prominent cross road is studied with its everyday activities . The study area is delineated based on the aerial distance of 500m (ideal walking distance) and 1000m (min. cycling distance) from the Halasuru Metro Station. Fig. 13

The focus of this project was the improvement of the area around the Halasuru Metro Station. To understand the existing conditions of the Halasuru area, various kinds of studies were done by referring to the journals and books on Halasuru, in person through surveys, online studies, inputs from Heritage experts and Bangalore Traffic Police.

The Bazaar Street is one of the prominent street of Halasuru area since olden times. The Bazaar street starts from Bhaskaran Road near Halasuru Lake upto Swami Vivekananda Road which is the metro corridor at present. The land uses around the street is identified. Fig 18 . The Someshwara temple is the major landmark here.

The activities along the Bazaar Street is marked for the understanding of the street character along different sections of the street. Fig. 19 The Bazaar Road also has mix of activities with vendors along the temple complex edges, parking of vehicles is one of the prominent activity. The famous Someswara temple Ratha is pulled along Bazaar street and Car Street around the temple, This event draws higher footfall to Halasuru along with the Palakkis gathering from the surrounding temples

Jogupalya Main Road Intervention Resolve the conflict with logistics vehicle and regular vehicular movement. Avoid footpaths from having become spill over spaces for commercial activities

The Sadashiva Mudaliar Road is a connecting road from Bhaskaran Road to SV road for pedestrians. It has a strong residential character with tiny stretches of commercial frontages. Numerous variation in the land use along the streets connecting to SM Road is seen. The Murphy Town Market, the government schools, the parks and playgrounds has access from SM Road increases the footfall of people and vehicles in this road. Fig. 24 Jogupalya Main road also known as G Main Street is the major collector road in Jogupalya. This road has a mixed use character with market stretches, commercial frontages and residential use. Through these Inteventions the issues in eachof the streets is aimed to be resolved and thus work towards developing the station area around Halsuru Metro Station. Fig 26

DAVANGERE Davangere is the 7th largest town in the State of Karnataka in south India. Davanagere was chosen as one of the 100 Indian towns to be developed as a smart city under Central government’s Smart Cities Mission.

It was among the first 20 towns to be developed under the mission by Ministry of Urban Development.

According to 2020 human living index, it was selected as the top 9th most livable city under 10 million population in India.

As Davangere is also one of the fastest developing town, the need for efficient transport systems in to be put in place in the town. Following the footsteps of Bangalore city, Davangere has also been encouraging cycling. Lot of cyclists are observed in the city with varied age groups.

Coo Rides is the micro mobility operator in Davangere with the provision of cycles in the city.

The Public Bicycling Sharing Systems in Davangere has been successfully running and the project aimed at analyzing and verifying the existing PBS stations and the cycling routes for the further laying of cycle tracks The road network of Davangere is analyzed along with Land Use and Activities which shall help to determine the footfall of people and vehicles of those particular streets. To understand the varying activities the major landmarks of the city has been identified and classified as Educational nodes, Commercial Nodes, Religious nodes, Hospitals and Recreation spots are marked and analyzed wrt to the PBS Stations across the town.

CYCLE 4 CHANGE CHALLENGE Davangere City has a mixed variety of activities with prominent Commercial & Institutional buildings. PB road being one of the major roads in the city has the commercial stretch with Office spaces, Retail stores, Hotel and Lodging facilities and Transport nodes. Hadadi Road has major Institutional Land Use along and is a prominent Educational and Hospital hub . Fig. 27 These PBS docking stations are located at 18 different locations spread all across the city with over 150 cycles(normal and electric).

In order to promote cycling in the city and moving a step forward in C4C challenge, connecting these docking stations with dedicated cycle tracks will give a boost to cycling in the city.

After analysis of Handle bar survey, it was noted that cycle users are afraid of riding cycles due to fast moving vehicle.

Scale up will provide dedicated cycle track with maximum outreach and will also safeguard cycle users from fast moving traffic.

Scaleup projects have been bifurcated into two categories/packages for better and smoother implementation viz Package-01 & Package-02 .

Under this package, roads with good width will be considered for the construction of dedicated cycle tracks.

All major roads of the city has been taken up.

These roads passes through important locations like colleges, Govt. Offices etc. where number of potential users can be significant.

All PBS docking stations have been covered and connected with each other in both the packages.

In this package, a barrier(like spring posts etc.) will be created between main carriageway and cycle track to differentiate.

The shades of red and orange indicate Highest Integration and Shades of Cyan and Blue indicate the most segregated roads It is clearly evident that PB Road, Ring Road and Hadadi Road and adjoining Jayadeva Circle and Gundi Circle are well integrated in the Davangere Road Network.

The Rode Analysis, Ride Analysis from every Station, Ride Analysis of Vehicles per day, Ride patterns in the town were studied through the reports.

The table on the left was a combined data collected from various reports to understand the rides starting from every station in the town. Fig 28 The stations located near the institutions had the highest cycle rides.

From the map we can observe that parts of PB Road leading to Kittur Rani Chenamma Circle, parts of Hadadi Road from the intersection point of AVK College Road and ITI circle and Ring Road are most busy stretches in the city.

BIET College Back Gate, Taralabalu School and UBDT Girl’s Hostel has highest number of rides from February to September 2021

BELLARY

The roads were redesigned by the reorgainisng the ROW. Every lane is considered to be 3.75m wide, depending upon the traffic volume in those particular stretches the number lanes assigned vary. Pedestrian safety is given utmost priority by focusing on wider footpaths with min width being 2.8m seamless movement of pedestrians through pedestrian crosswalks and refugee islands. Lot of priority is given to increasing green spaces on either side of the footpath and on refugee islands.

The NMT Transport initiatives in the Urban Karnataka are intended to focus on the provision and augmenting of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to promote the use of cycling and walking. Presently, the Green Links Programme for the development of pedestrian and cycling infra in the ULBs in Bangalore in implemented by KNMTA. The other 11 ULBs are developing their conceptual designs for the Green Links Programme and Bellary ois one among those cities in the state of Karnataka.

Bellary city is 200 kms away from the state capital . The city has three national highways pass through it. NH 150A SH 132 and SH 128 these roads are considered for designing along with the Parvatinagar Main Road.

The 4 road stretches add upto 3.8kms. Along Parvathinagar Main Road Valmiki Circle, Cross Road1 and KHB Colony Junction 3 exists. On State Highway 128 is the KHB Colony Junction 4, Moka Road Junction, Underbridge Junction and Gadagi Chennappa Vrutta. State Highway 132 has Cowl Bazaar Junction, Railway Station Junction, Mothi Circle and H R Gaviyappa Circle. SURVEYS Extensive surveys were done through the 6 month Fellowship at DULT for Parking Policy , Household surveys for the study of Rajajinagar TOD area and Perception Survey for the Halasuru neighbourhood study project. These surveys conducted were a part of the study projects conducted by DULT

PARKING SURVEY

The Survey involved visiting the five wards on Western part of Bengaluru at Yeshwanthpura, Nandini Layout, Rajajinagar, Mahalakshipuram for understanding Parking demand by the users. The assessment was done by understanding the on ground situation through multiple discussions with vehicle owners, Bangalore Traffic Police, land owners and metro users who depend on private vehicle. Based on the needs and as per policy parking allotment was done these 5 wards.

HOUSEHOLD SURVEY

The study for Transit Oriented Development area for Rajajinagar Metro Station involved the surveying of households that exist around the metro station within 500m radius. The survey was conducted for specific HH based on its distance between the samples. The data collection was done by interacting with men, women which included school children, college students, people going to work and senior citizens to get an overall idea of these users.

PERCEPTION SURVEY

For interpreting the users of certain streets in the Halasuru neighbourhood, the survey was conducted. The data collected from the survey gave us an understandingoftypeofpedestriansandvehicleusersusingthestreetsinHalasuru for various purposes. The street activities were also observed and considered the perception survey which gave a better classification for the type of users.
