With this in mind, our very first group test will pit five of the most commonly available players against each other. And, if you are looking for something more along the lines of a media centre, we have also featured two of the latest models from Vidabox, which have come in on a very special introductory offer. Rohan Bhatty Dear TECH, I was planning on picking up a decent gaming PC and wanted to know what would be a better option from a performance and price standpoint – pick up a branded PC; get one assembled; or stick with gaming consoles? Khalid al Muharzy Dear Khalid, Many people believe that PC gaming is on the path to extinction and, with consoles becoming as powerful as they are, their beliefs are justified. But no matter what, a proper gaming PC will always offer the latest and best in graphics performance and be home to a few stunning exclusives that cannot be experienced elsewhere – World of Warcraft and League of Legends anyone?. Unfortunately, buying a gaming PC will not exactly be cheap. On average a decent rig would easily cost you in excess of OMR400 and even then you will barely get into the mid-range performance category; proper highperformance machines will cost well in excess of OMR1000. On the other hand, gaming consoles, on average, would cost you around OMR200, no matter what you choose. These are more cost and space efficient too. And, no matter which you choose, its game library will most certainly be significantly larger than what a PC can offer. They are not without their drawbacks though. Firstly, they will never be able to match a good gaming rig in terms of graphics performance and, although you can browse the internet on some of them, they will never be able to replace the multitasking capabilities of a PC. So, if price is no option and you want to enjoy PC exclusives, go for the rig. And if you do, get it assembled since you will have the flexibility to tune it to your liking. Or, if you have deeper pockets, try to get a hold of an Alienware ALX, they are simply the best gaming PC’s out there. -Ed
Dear Editor, My Laptop was giving me some major problems lately. It randomly gets hot and then shuts down and cannot be restarted successfully for at least 20 minutes thereafter. What could be the problem and how do I get it fixed? Regards, Rohan Bhatty Dear Rohan The problem with your PC is obviously overheating. This is also the reason why your PC does not properly restart for about 20 minutes, which is how long the components need to cool. The reason for this problem could be either a faulty component, the heat sink may have become detached from one of the key parts or it could be as simple as not enough ventilation. Firstly, never use your laptop on your bed or other soft surfaces as the top of the surface can mould around the laptop and block key ventilation points. Always use it on flat, well ventilated surfaces. If this is not the problem than it most definitely is an interior component of the laptop and you should avoid using it as much as possible till it is inspected, to avoid further damage. If you have a faulty component, it will have to be replaced and if a heat sink has become detached, it will have to be refitted with thermal paste. Do this and your overheating problems should be over. -Ed

HDBaseT technology finalised HDBaseT Alliance, the cross-industry alliance formed to promote and standardise the HDBaseT technology for whole-home distribution of uncompressed high definition (HD) multimedia content, announced its formal incorporation. The Alliance is founded by LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor, all of which comprise the HDBaseT Alliance’s Board of Directors. The Alliance also announced the finalisation of the HDBaseT 1.0 base specification. The development of this cohesive specification is set to transform the digital media ecosystem, allowing consumers to enjoy premium content 10 / TECH
through unparalleled, uninterrupted HD distribution without the tangle of cables currently required. The cornerstone of HDBaseT technology is 5Play, an unrivaled feature-set that converges full uncompressed HD video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, high power over cable and various control signals through a single 100m/328ft CAT5e/6 LAN cable. HDBaseT has the bandwidth to support the highest video resolutions such as full HD 1080p as well as 3D and 2Kx4K formats. HDBaseT is the first to provide all-in-one connectivity, making it possible for a single-connector TV to receive power, video/audio, Internet and control signals from the same cable.
Development and preparation for an HDBaseT Alliance Compliance Program is currently underway. The Alliance plans to formulate a logo usage and licensing program to ensure consistency and consumers’ ability to recognise interoperable HDBaseT devices in the market.
A whole new Blu-ray format Sharp, a member of the Blu-ray Association, announced that it’s going to be the first optical disc maker to launch a new Blu-ray format that offers 100GB of storage space. The existing dual-layer Blu-ray format offers a cap of 50GB per disc. The new format, called VR-100BR1, will use a new triple-layer standard that enables even more data to be squeezed onto the same amount of physical space. According to Sharp, the VR-100BR1 disc is made based on the new BDXL format specification introduced by the Blu-ray
Disc Association in April. This new format allows for a ceiling capacity up to 128GB for Blu-ray write-once discs and 100GB for the rewriteable format. The higher amount of storage space is archived by increasing the allowed layers on a disc to four, up from two layers of existing Blu-ray discs.
The company says the multilayer Blu-ray discs will be available in Japan soon and is expected to cost around USD 60 apiece. Together with the new disc, Sharp will also releasing two players that can handle the new format--the Aquos BD-HDW700 and BD-HDW70.
Sharp’s new VR-100BR1 Blu-ray disc will first be available in the write-once format and is capable of holding about 12 hours of terrestrial digital TV broadcasts or 8.6 hours of satellite digital broadcasts.
Microsoft earns record revenue Microsoft Corp announced a record fourthquarter revenue of USD16.04bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, a 22 per cent increase from the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were USD5.93bn, USD4.52bn and USD0.51 per share, which represented increases of 49 per cent, 48 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively, when compared with the prior year period. Product momentum continued during the quarter with the successful launch of Office 2010 and strong performance from existing products including Windows 7,
which has sold more than 175 mn licenses to date, Windows Server, Xbox, and Bing, which achieved its 13th consecutive month of share gain. For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, Microsoft reported record revenue of USD62.48 bn, a 7 per cent increase from the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the year were USD24.10bn, USD18.76bn and USD2.10, which represented increases of 18 per cent, 29 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, when compared with the prior year.

Battle for the Blu-ray crown With Blu-Ray discs becoming more widespread their players have also become more affordable. Furthermore, with the advent of 3D technology it looks like they have quite a bright future ahead of them. Over the next few pages we will pit five Blu-ray players against each other. When buying a Blu-ray player there are three primary factors that you should look at: performance, looks and features. To benchmark the five we used the most common and widely used player on the market – the Play Station 3.

Design
Because it is primarily a game console, the PS3 looks significantly different from the other players in the test. It obviously has no face buttons or display and is controlled by the PS3’s game controller, unless you decide to purchase a Bluetooth remote controller for the system of course. It can even be placed either vertically or horizontally. On a slight downside, because of its curved surface you cannot stack anything on top of it.

Because of its gaming intentions and regular firmware updates from Sony, the PS3 is also a features powerhouse. Aside from the expected support for both old and new Blu-Rays, the system also supports those with BD-Live content. It can even do so without the need for an Ethernet cable or a USB flash drive to save content, thanks to the built-in WiFi support and 250GB hard drive (120GB on the lower-end model). It even has an edge on other players when it comes to internet browsing, especially if a USB

Even its video and audio performance is on par, if not better, than most standalone Blu-ray players. Overview
Aside from being nosier than other players, the PS3 is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to playing Blu-ray movies. Its strong feature set and constant firmware updates even make it future-proof. While the recent drop in prices for stand-alone players make the

Design
Simplicity is the name of the game with the XV-BP1, and JVC has done a pretty good job with the design of the player. Its front panel is divided into two with one side finished in a nice glossy black layer, containing the drive and display, while the other has a simple layout of buttons surrounded by a brushed metal finish. These buttons have a blue glow around them when the system is switched on, which is a nice design aesthetic. This player proves that sometimes the simplest designs are more than enough for it to be pleasing to the eye.
Features
In keeping with its simplistic theme, the XV-BP1 isn’t very feature heavy but covers all the necessary bases. To start with, it features BD Profile 2.0 support which means that it can play any of the Blu-ray discs that are BD Liveready so long as you are connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable. While it may not support other online features, firmware updates can still be downloaded to the player. It even supports most codecs including
Dolby Digital True HD and DTS-HD Decoding. The player also supports many other formats including BD/DVD Hybrid formats, Audio CDs and almost all optical discs. It even supports a wide range of video and audio formats, even HD H.264 files in MKV containers, and can access them right from the USB port. And as an added benefit to those people that own the JVC HD Everio, it can be connected to the digital camcorder directly for playback.

While it may not have a lot of online features, it does provide you with good playback quality with Blu-rays and even does a fine job with DVD’s and, like the Sony, the JVC has just enough features to provide you with a decent viewing experience.
When it comes to Blu-rays there is’nt anything that particularly stands out in terms of video and audio quality. The player does a good job with both and is on par in most respects with most of the players in this test. It even has fairly good loading times when loading movies. When dealing with DVD’s though, the player is easily one of the best especially in this group. All DVD movies can be upscaled nicely to 1080p and it even manages to improve on the colour and

Design
While the BDP3000 is the cheapest model in Philips’ latest line-up of Blu-ray players, there is no sign of this from its styling. The Philips is a fine looking player with a clean gloss-black front, rounded corners and sturdy build quality to match.
Features
considering that it is the cheapest model in the Philips line-up we expected the model to not have a very rich feature set. As with the JVC and the Sony, the Philips also supports BD Profile 2.0 and like them, it too requires that you plug 20 / TECH
in an Ethernet cable to access the extra BD Live content. It also lacks any onboard storage, so, you have to connect a memory stick of at least 1GB in size if you want to use this facility. And while it does have support for DivX, JPEG or MP3 files, they need to be burned to CD or DVD to be used with the system. Also, it was the only system that was missing an optical output so keep that in mind if you decide on purchasing one.
Performance
When it comes to Blu-rays there inst Thankfully, the Philips lived up to our
expectation when it came to Blu-ray video playback with video quality on par with every player in this group. It provided strong detailing; rich colours and good contrast performance and it even had relatively quick loading times.
Overview
While it lacks some of the features of the other players in its class, its great video playback and fast loading times make it worth considering, especially when you take its price into account.

Design
The BD570 is definitely an attractive looking player, with its glossy front panel and relatively small footprint and at just 1.7 inches tall it will be an easy fit for your cabinet. In keeping with its clean looks the player has no face buttons on the outside, aside from the power and eject button on the top. These are smartly hidden underneath the front panel that automatically flips down when the disc tray is ejected. Also accompanying the playback buttons under the front panel is a USB port.
Features
In addition to its online features, it also includes DLNA functionality.

Gracenote then returns rich information on the song, such as artist and genre, along with album cover art. All of this is possible through its built-in high speed Wi-Fi connectivity.

Picture quality for Blu-ray movies was excellent with good colour saturation and jaw-dropping detail.It even had equally impressive audio performance. While the player did take longer to load than the other models the time taken was perfectly acceptable. The only downside to the BD570’s video performance is its DVD playback. Images on DVD are warm with a slight reddish hue and overall colour lacks vibrancy.
Overview
With its strong online feature set the LG makes for an enticing and attractive offer. It even sports stunning video playback quality and is very user friendly. If only its DVD playback was up to the mark, it would have easily been one of the best standalone players out there. That said, if DVD’s aren’t your thing then you can’t go wrong with the LG, especially at this price. TECH / 21

Design
Easily the best looking player of this bunch, the BD-C6900 sports some very innovative styling. It has a glossy transparent top through which you can see the disk spinning on one side and a set of touch sensitive controls on the other. The stylish and glossy front panel is devoid of any controls and aside from the Samsung logo and central display, has only a single USB socket that mildly disturbs its polished look. The design is also extremely slim at just 1.6″ tall.

The Samsung is an absolute powerhouse sporting fast load times in the test and picture quality on par with the best, be it DVD’s or Blu-rays. It even spots a new GUI which is very easy to navigate through. Combined with the fact that it is 3D capable, it makes for a very compelling buy.

Even without its 3D capability, the Samsung has the performance, looks and feature set to justify its price. But if you are one of the lucky few who owns a 3D TV, this player is a no-brainer.

open when the tray opens. There aren’t many controls on the system itself which means; most of the controlling will have to be done by the remote. This isn’t too bad considering the fact that the remote is well designed and easy to use.
Features
The BDP-S360 has the Profile 2.0 compliance allowing it BD live content but in order for this feature to function, an Ethernet cable must be plugged in as there is no Wi-Fi support and furthermore
a USB drive needs to be plugged in to serve as the primary storage of the content. While it is lacking a bit in the
features department it makes up for it with its budget price tag and the inclusion of full internal decoding for all advanced audio codecs, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Performance
Sony has pushed the price/performance benchmark with the BDP-S360’s video processing. It performed exceptionally well when playing blu-rays and even did a great job when it came to upscaling standard DVD’s. It also features a XrossMediaBar similar to the one found on the PS3 and thus shares the same intuitive controls. However it doesn’t
share the same load and response times so be prepared to wait a little while longer. It does have a Quick Start mode that turns the player on a bit faster than normal. It doesn’t cut down on load times, but it gets you up and going quicker.
Overview
The BDP-S360 is clearly for people who don’t care too much about fancy features and Internet streaming but want uncompromised video and audio quality when watching movies. It definitely is a very good blu-ray player that offers video quality on par with the best in the market at a fraction of the cost.
The Bottom Line With all the players in this test offering great blu-ray playback it was down to the features and its pricing to decide a winner. For starters, if you already own a PS3 or are planning on picking up one soon then you need not look for a stand-alone player since the PS3 is more than capable. On the other hand if you do need one, then you first need to decide if you are planning to jump on the 3D bandwagon and want the best possible audio and video quality. If so then your choices are limited and in the case of this test the Samsung is your only choice. But as far as regular players go, the LG offers a great feature set and blu-ray
playback quality at a respectable price point making it the best all-round choice of the bunch but you have to keep in mind that its DVD playback leaves a lot to be desired. On the same note if DVD’s are your thing and you need good USB sourced multimedia playback then the JVC makes a good case for itself by offering the great performance in both albeit at a slightly higher price and no internet streaming.

The Type R logo has always been a symbol of performance and speed for Honda vehicles since 1992. Now Honda has finally brought the icon to Oman in the form of the new Civic Type R Photography: Shakeel al Balushi
Exterior The latest Civic Type R, unlike the Japanese version, features a very unique angular design. Everything from the headlights and front grill right down to the triangular tail pipes of the car has a geometric and futuristic look to it giving it a distinct identity. There are some really
neat touches all over the car such as the matt-silver fuel-filler cap, sleek door handles, triangular fog lights and more. On the whole the Type R is a stunning sight on the road but will only attract a very specific demographic of people – namely the younger kind.
Equipment Considering its sporting intensions, the Type R is considerably well equipped. You get cloth and alcantara sport seats, dual-zone air conditioning, CD/MP3 player, auto headlamps, rear parking sensors and more as standard. Also standard are a number of safety features such as Air bags all-round the car, stability and traction control, ABS and EBD. One thing you have to take into account is that the vehicle is only available with manual transmission, which is actually a good thing in our books.
Refinement You don’t buy a hardcore performance hatch and expect it to be quiet and the Type R is no exception. The engine is loud and only gets louder the higher you rev it. But if you are even thinking about this car then you are most probably ready for it. Aside from the engine, there is only a little bit of expected road noise from the low-profile tyres that intrudes into the cabin. It is nothing that will hamper your experience, especially if you are the sort of a person who enjoys the sound of a highrevving VTEC.
Inside the cabin The space-age theme of the exterior is just as pronounced in the interior. The dash itself is split into three displays, one displaying the tachometer, LCD display, fuel gauge and temperature gauge while the second sports a digital speedometer and a shift indicator while the third displays climate control and audio information. Just as with the exterior, the interior also sports some neat touches such as the semi-transparent red starter button and hazard light button, red contrast stitching on the upholstery, 42 / TECH
stitched Type R logos on the seats and even a small plaque in front of the gear leaver that has an identity number unique to each car. Even though the cabin features some hard plastics, the materials used are well finished and has a good quality feel to them. The Type R is also fitted with stunning racing seats that are extremely comfortable and easy to adjust. They even offer a great driving position, perfect for a quick blast through the mountains.
Despite being a two-door hot hatch, there is ample room in the back to seat even the tallest of adults comfortably. We only had two complaints about the interior – firstly, if you move the seat forward to get someone seated at the back or vice versa, the seat never returns to its original position and has to be setup again which can get on your nerves. The second problem was the rear visibility, which is completely hampered by the spoiler that goes right across the rear windscreen.
Ride and handling
Performance
The Civic Type R has always been put forward as an extremely sport-tuned hot hatch and as such it features really hard suspensions. While it does aid in cornering it can be quite hard for day-to-day use. But when you take it to the right roads the Civic can be extremely fun, it’s steering is sharp and responsive and the grip through corners is also quite good. It does suffer from a bit of understeer and mid-corner bumps can slightly unsettle the balance (primarily due to the use of a torsion beam at the rear instead of independent suspensions). But on a whole, the Civic Type R on the right road and on smooth tarmac can be an absolute joy to drive.
The Type R is equipped with 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine that produces 198 hp and revs to a staggering 8,000rpm. Its torque figure stands at 193 Nm and it hits this figure at 5,600 rpm. In standard VTEC tradition the engine needs to be revved hard to truly reach its full potential. When it does, you will see 100kmph in just 6.6 seconds and if you push it all the way you can hit a top speed of 235kmph where permitted. But, to Honda’s credit, it has to be said that the torque distribution has been improved from past models making it easier to trot around town.
Verdict While the Type R looks great, is very spacious and well equipped, Honda has taken a significantly more hardcore approach with its latest hot hatch in terms of ride and handling. As such it can be a
bit uncomfortable for city driving and on bumpy roads. But give it the right ones and the car will shine through. The clutch is soft, the gear shifts are smooth and the engine loves to rev and boy does it sound
good when it does. If you truly love hot hatches than the Type R is one you would not want to overlook.

There is a very fine line between driver involvement and electronic interference in supercars. Too much of the former and the car can get increasingly difficult to drive and too much of the latter tends to sacrifice enjoyment. Very few manufacturers manage to crack the
balance just right. But there is one that not only managed to crack this with every successive model but has pushed the boundaries of how much technological wizardry can be fitted to a vehicle without sacrificing the fun or the involvement of the vehicle – this manufacturer is Ferrari.
Now they have done it again with the 458 Italia, fitting it with technology that most of us would never even think of and delivering one of the fastest ever V8 berlinettas to ever come out of the Ferrari stables.
All steering-column mounted stalks have been eliminated, with the indicators, full beam, flash and windscreen wiper functions now being activated by buttons on the steering wheel boss. The button to select the shock absorber setting is now positioned next to the ‘Engine start’ button where it falls readily to hand. Behind the wheel are a number
of secondary functions, such as the stereo, while the gearbox paddles are now longer making shifts even easier from any steering angle. The right-hand satellite pod on the dash incorporates controls for the infotainment, the Bluetooth connection, sat-nav, digital speedo and rear parking camera. Clustered on the left-hand satellite pod
are the optional cruise control, buttons for choosing the video setting of the lefthand dash TFT screen and the on-board computer interface. The latter controls the trip computer, the Vehicle Dynamic Assistance and the display of the car’s set-up.

The novel triple exhaust tail pipes are a styling cue that recalls the legendary F40 Engineers focused their efforts on achieving maximum efficiency right across the board with this car. The result is that the Ferrari 458 Italia produces only 307 g/km of CO2 and has a fuel consumption of just 13.3 l/100km (combined cycle), a benchmark for the entire segment.
The integration of the E-Diff and F1-Trac (now controlled by the same ECU) and their respective mappings is even greater, resulting in a 32 per cent increase in longitudinal acceleration out of corners compared to previous models. The same ECU also governs the high-performance ABS, providing even more precise control over the logic threshold and greater efficiency The oil radiators for the F1 gearbox and the dual-clutch are situated in the tail and air is fed from two intakes on the top of the rear wings

The 458 accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 3.4 seconds, 0-200 kmph in 10.4 seconds and has a top speed close to 325 kmph.
The nose features a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. When it comes to today’s console games, time manipulation is nothing unique. For a game based entirely on this mechanic, Singularity really needed to pull all the stops and deliver a truly unique experience. Unfortunately, were it not for some shady visuals and some inconsistencies, it would have easily ranked among the better FPSs this year

he story takes place on Katorga-12, a fictitious Russian island that was home to a mysterious Russian base. As it turns out the Russians were experimenting on an element known as E99, a rare substance with mysterious capabilities. As is expected the
journal entries that you need to collect to fully understand the story. On the same note you also occasionally come across spectral apparitions and scribbling on the wall that either delve deeper into the plot or warn of impending doom. Thankfully though, despite the game’s heavy reliance on the system, its story never gets too convoluted. And furthermore if you do take a liking to the story, it is advised that you take the time to see everything possible in the first play through. This is because the game has no form of chapter 48 / TECH

can be incredibly fun. Also, a few hours into the game you get access to the TMD, Time Manipulation Device, and that is when the game truly shines. This aptly named device’s primary function is to control the flow of time allowing you to either age or renew various objects in the game, primarily to solve puzzles. Because of this the actual time manipulation mechanic and its restorative abilities are slightly limited but it is the secondary functions and abilities of the TMD that truly make the game fun. With it, you can age a creature to dust, slow down time in a select area or even turn a human into one of the creatures in the game and turn him on his teammates.
Alongside your upgradeable TMD and guns, you also come across the occasional augmenter station which boosts your own abilities. Combine these and you can easily become a near unstoppable force by the end of the game. This fact is further emphasized by the AI in the game. The beasts we can understand but when human enemies display the survival instincts of a five year old you know something is wrong. Don’t be surprised if you find an enemy just standing in the open like a piñata waiting to be smashed or if he does take cover, he does so on the wrong side. At least the game offers up a good variety of enemies and a constant stream of new weapons and attacks that keep it from feeling stale and repetitive. The online multiplayer mechanic feels a little tacked on and suffers from some connection issues but once it does work it can be quite fun and even offers a great variety, in terms of gameplay not modes, to keep you busy for hours on end. Aside from these there are a few instances where the game does suffer from a few game-stopping glitches, forcing you to reload the last save, but we are sure that a future update can fix these issues.

For a game that’s been so long in development, the graphics sure are a letdown. Aside from a few decent character models most of the game suffers from poor texturing and inferior lighting making it look dated. There is even a lack of attention to detail which, in some cases, is inexcusable; such as when you walk in front of a projector without dropping a shadow on the screen. The voice acting, sound effects and music are decent but not enough to completely redeem the game’s lacklustre visuals. On a whole, Singularity offers some good variety and some truly fun action but is bogged down by a smattering of glitches and poor visuals. Despite this, the game is still worth at least a single play though and the online mode is great for killing time. TECH / 49
