Understanding OMAN

Geography Oman extends from the lush plains of Dhofar to the parched, arid eastern sands. Situated in the extreme South Eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman lies on the Tropic of Cancer, extending from latitude 16.40 to 26.20 degrees North and longitude 51.50 to 59.40 degrees East. The country’s 3,165km coastline runs from the Arabian Sea at the entrance to the Indian Ocean in the far South West, to Musandam and the Sea of Oman in the North, where it overlooks the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the entrance to the Gulf. Oman shares borders with the Republic of Yemen to the South West, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the West and the United Arab Emirates to the North. It has sovereignty over a number of small islands in the Sea of Oman, the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea. The geographical diversity of the sultanate is best observed by using the country’s modern network of multilane highways. The impressive Hajjar mountain range runs in a great arc from Ru’us al Jibal in the north-west of the country, to Ras al Hadd in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, overlooking the Indian Ocean.

In emergency Oman has several private hospitals and clinics that are accessible to tourists. These are clean and well-staffed. If you have a medical emergency in Oman, you can turn up at the emergency department of any of the private hospitals for immediate care. You may be transferred to one of the government hospitals for specialist treatment based on the seriousness of the ailment.

Health requirements No health certificates are required for visitors to Oman, except for people who have recently been in a yellow fever-infected area. However, it is always wise to check with an Oman diplomatic mission or your travel agent before departure as health restrictions may change. As of 2001, the World Health Organisation declared Oman malaria-free and taking preventive medication is no longer required. Rabies has not been eradicated in Oman, so if you are bitten, you should seek medical attention immediately. Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, and typhoid, are recommended. Oman’s climate can be harsh, particularly in summer. Drink plenty of water and cover up when out in the sun.

People with disabilities Most of Oman’s hotels have wheelchair access and toilet facilities for people with special needs. There are reserved parking spaces for the physically challenged, and drivers leave these vacant as the police carry out regular inspections.

Entry visa and travel insurance A passport valid for at least six months is required for all visitors, except nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia who hold national identity cards, and holders of a Macau (SAR) Travel Permit. Visa permits have been greatly simplified as the country welcomes increased tourism. However, regulations should always be checked with your Oman embassy or consulate before travelling, especially if you plan to get a visa on arrival. Refer to the website of the Royal Oman Police (www.rop.gov.om) to get latest information on tourist visas.

Overseas travel can be an unforgettable experience. However, without proper travel insurance, the dream holiday you had been planning for months could quickly turn into a nightmare. Arranging travel insurance is not too expensive, nor does it require a lot of your time. Choose a reputable insurer and explore the various policies that they have on offer. There will always be a plan or policy that best suits your particular needs. Also make sure you read the fine print in the policy document, as there might be certain costs that the policy might not cover.

Travelling with children Most countries are family-friendly, and so is Oman. Children will have a great time. There are quite a few parks and amusement centres for activities. However, make sure to visit the parks in the evening, as it is quite hot during the day. Children can also enjoy swimming. For those with a passion for nature and adventure, go camping and explore Oman’s many wadis, beaches and mountains.

One of the constants in Oman is the annual Muscat Festival that takes place in January. It offers all sorts of fun-filled activities for the whole family. Hotels and shopping malls are also children-friendly, offering babysitting services and even small play centres. Restaurants in Oman have children’s menus. However, if you require a high chair, make sure to check with the individual restaurants.

History As the great Arab navigator Ahmed bin Majid alNajdi recognised in AD 1490 Muscat, even to this day, has a character quite different from neighbouring capitals. In 1508 the Portuguese gained control of Muscat and the adjacent coast. Until driven out in 1650, they maintained a trading post and naval base there. Two 16th-century Portuguese forts overlook the town. Muscat’s old walls and some of its gates, still stand. The town’s unusual architecture shows Arab, Portuguese, Persian, Indian, African, and modern Western influences. The sultan’s Indian-style palace is built at the edge of the sea. Muscat is the site of a national museum. Commercial activity is centred around Muttrah, just to the west.

24

HOTEL & TRAVEL

Oman today There are few high-rise blocks, and even the most functional building is required to reflect tradition with a dome or an arabesque window. The result of these strict building policies is an attractive, spotlessly clean and uniform city – not much different in essence from the ‘very elegant town with very fine houses’ as the Portuguese admiral Alfonso de Alburqueque observed when he sailed towards Muscat in the 16th century. Muscat means ‘anchorage’, and the sea continues to constitute a major part of the city: it brings people on cruise ships and goods in containers to the historic ports of Old Muscat and Muttrah. It contributes to the city’s economy through the onshore refinery near Qurm, and provides a livelihood for fishermen along the beaches of Shatti al-Qurm and Athaiba. More recently, it has also become a source of

recreation at Al-Bustan and Bandar Jissah, and along the sandy beach that stretches almost without interruption from Muscat to the border with UAE, over 200km to the northwest.

Muscat is a forward-thinking, progressive city much loved by its citizens, and a beacon for those who live in the interior. In 2006 a museum, Bait alBaranda, was opened in the city’s honour. Its inauguration

coincided with the choice of Muscat as Arab Cultural Capital – a fitting celebration of Muscat’s renaissance.

Seasons Muscat is in a beautiful region of mountains and has a lovely coastal view, but the heat and humidity of the summer can make it extremely unpleasant for visitors, especially those from more moderate climes. The best time to visit the city is between December and March.

This is the time when temperatures will be much more mild and agreeable, and the risk of sunburn, heatstroke, and dehydration are greatly reduced. While it is still warm compared to other regions’ winters, it is cool enough to enjoy being outside and seeing the sights.

Local Holidays New Year’s Day (January 1) Mouloud (Birth of the Prophet) (March 9) Leilat al Meiraj (Ascension of the Prophet) (July 20) Renaissance Day (July 23) Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan) (September) National Day and Birthday of HM Sultan Qaboos (November 18) Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) (November 28) Al-Hijra (Islamic New Year) (December 18) Note: During Islamic holidays, banks and government offices are closed. The holidays and festivals are set according to phases of the moon, and dates may change yearly. To ensure that you enjoy the festivals you want, make sure that you check the date of the holiday before planning your visit.

Local Customs and language Customs Oman is a country that keeps its heritage very much alive. While it does have many modern amenities, Muscat is deeply religious. This is seen in all areas, including food, socialisation, and even the festivals and events planned in the city. It is extremely helpful to know some common phrases, such as please and thank you, as well as common greetings, as well as to know the local customs. Omanis receive many guests, and the city of Muscat knows that not every visitor will be aware of the intricacies of its culture: for the most part, they are very forgiving. Public affection however, is seen as taboo. It is a wonderful culture, and Omanis will appreciate the time and effort you make in showing your respect.

Language Muscat’s official language is Arabic, which is also widely spoken throughout the region. The city is diverse, and you will also hear smatterings of Swahili, English, Hindi, Malayalam, and several Indian dialects. Because of the large number of English-speaking tourists, many in the city will speak at least a little English, and it is the primary language used in business.

Tipping It isn’t customary to tip in Muscat, especially in less expensive establishments. Upscale restaurants tack on a service charge to your bill in lieu of a gratuity, though it is not for the wait staff. It is appreciated if you tip someone who extends a courtesy or provides an extra service, such as a driver who carries your bag. In this case, a small tip of a few Omani Rial is welcome.

Value for money Visitors who are to spend considerable time and expense traveling to Muscat will be relieved to find that there are several ways to save money while enjoying a world class vacation. The city is a treat for the senses, and you can enjoy much of it without spending a baiza. Marvel at the dramatic architecture. The city is built between rolling mountains and the dazzling sea. In the valleys are villages that look like they were carved there thousands of years ago. The entire vista is quite stunning. Muscat has delicious, fresh, and healthy dishes that cost very little. A meal for two people can cost as little as RO1, and there are a host of different restaurants in Muscat, Muttrah, and Ruwi where you can sample only the best.

Health and Security Health In many countries, it is safer to drink bottled rather than tap water. While water systems may be clean enough, storage tanks are often less sanitary. To be on the safe side, drink bottled water, even in restaurants, during your stay in Muscat. Brushing your teeth or boiling tap water for tea or coffee is usually very safe, though you can always exercise extra caution and use bottled water. The food is prepared with the utmost attention to cleanliness and safety, but the combination of spices may cause

foreigners some discomfort, simply because they are not used to the cuisine. If this is the case, stick to a bland diet and stay hydrated until you feel better. The beautiful Gulf of Oman is home to coral and sea snakes that may be dangerous if provoked. If you are going to swim, snorkel, or dive on your trip, make sure to avoid these threats. Ambulances are available in Muscat, and those needing emergency care will be taken to the nearest hospital.

Security In addition to the normal precautions one should take while travelling (such as protecting your wallet and travel documents, especially in large crowds), there are cultural differences that can present problems for foreign nationals. This is particularly prevalent in regards to women: while in this country, it is better for women to dress conservatively, and avoid clothing that is revealing. Women should wear a scarf over their hair if visiting a mosque. Both men and

28

HOTEL & TRAVEL

women should avoid wearing shorts, unless they are at a resort. Loose, linen or cotton pants are cool and will not cause offence. Foreigners should be aware that the law in Muscat and Oman in general is very strict. Offenses such as obscene gestures or language are punishable with prison sentences. It is best, no matter what your persuasion that you not engage in public displays of affection.

As in many countries, be assertive when dealing with taxi drivers. Many will try to charge much more when they see you are foreign, unless you act like a very experienced traveller. Be aware that when the driver tells you how much it will cost to get to your destination, he is giving you the top price he hopes you will pay. Haggle this down, or you will end up paying much more than you should. If possible, ask a local how much a certain fare should be and which route is the best to take.

Weather The heat can be oppressing, especially for the elderly, children, and those with respiratory problems. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of bottled water – do not wait until you are thirsty. As a rule, carry a bottle with you during your outings. Wear sunscreen, and do take advantage of the siesta time. Omanis know how dangerous the hot weather and sun can be, so take their cue and enjoy some time resting inside during the height of the day.

Tax Refunds Currently, Oman has no program allowing travellers to recoup sales tax upon their departure from the country. There is no sales tax on most items, though restaurants and hotels charge a 17 per cent tax.

Disabled Travellers The city of Muscat receives travellers from all over the world, and its accommodations for disabled travellers are better than you will find in more remote regions of Oman. Most hotels were built after 1980, so access is not typically a problem with lodgings. Likewise, most of the public buildings in Muscat were built after 1980 and have fairly good access for disabled travellers. Seeb International Airport and its airlines are accessible, though you may have some difficulty in finding handicap accessible taxis and buses. You may need assistance getting in or out. If you do need assistance, the people of Muscat are by and large very friendly and happy to assist you.

By road The Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) operates the state’s bus services between Dubai in UAE and Oman. Dubai is located approximately 450km from Muscat and it takes about four and a half hours to travel by road. Several private buses also travel within these two destinations. Other than this the ONTC also has regular bus services within Oman, to Salalah, Nizwa, Sohar and other towns. Travelling between destinations within Oman can be a comfort in rented cars. There are several agencies providing ‘rent-a-car’ services. Oman is a fantastic destination for anyone who has never self-driven abroad before. It is safe thanks to an excellent road system. Hotels are easy to find and fuel is readily obtainable and unbelievably cheap. Off-road driving through the desert terrains is as much fun. The deep sand is challenging and consequently it is imperative to be accompanied by a local guide since navigation is difficult even with a GPS.

THE BURGEONING CAPITAL

TRAVE L

The bustling city Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman and a governorate itself, is a gorgeous and photogenic city. As the capital, it is mainly three small cities that grew together over time. Muscat often referred to as the ‘walled city,’ is home to the royal palaces and courts. Matrah, originally a fishing village, has one of the oldest, mazelike Matrah Souq and a major busy port called Port Sultan Qaboos. Ruwi on the other hand, is generally considered the commercial centre of the city. Located on the Gulf of Oman coast, as the three cities began to develop at a fast rate, the town gave its name to the country. Harboured by volcanic mountains, the ancient city is connected by road to the west and south. As a governorate, Muscat is the heart of the country and has the key transportation network, Seeb International Airport. Muscat by itself is scattered with many interesting places to visit. With the perfect blend of ancient and contemporary, the city is medium-paced and can be discovered in approximately three to four days.

Bandar Jissah This reserve is at a distance of 30-40 minutes by boat from Bandar al Rawdha Marina, located in the heart of Muscat. Your boat ride is made more pleasurable with the accompaniment of dolphins that swim along the boats. You’ll enjoy seeing the mountains and the white-washed small houses that overlook the majestic sea as the backdrop. You’ll also pass Al Bustan Palace Hotel and Barr al Jissah Spa. Coral reefs permeate the Bandar al Khayran waters, considered home to many diverse organisms and fish. The place is popular with divers, especially with the presence of more than 22 diving locations, each with its own charm and beauty.

This is one of the most beautiful wadis in Muscat Governorate. It is situated three kilometres away from Wilayat Qurayat on the road leading to the villages of Fins and Bamah. The wadi cleaves a deep furrow in the flank of the A’Sharqiyah al Hajar Mountains. An abundance of water characterises the area, where deep pools are found in the wadi. Four villages on both banks form Wadi al Arbiyeen. These villages are famous for the cultivation of palm trees, bananas, lemon and mango trees.

Bandar Khayran Bandar Al Khayran is a serene and picturesque bay inlet on the road between Yitti Beach Village and Sifah about 30 minutes from Muttrah, Muscat by car. The underwater scenery in Bandar Al Khayran is also a tourist destination for divers and for the ‘SemiSubmersible,’ a vessel used to explore the reef below. Unlike conventional submarines, Semi-submersibles do not dive completely underwater but remain on the surface, allowing passengers to explore sea life through large, clear glass windows while seating in air-conditioned comfort two meters below the water.

Al Jalali Fort lies in old Muscat and overlooks the Sea of Oman. It is also known as the Ash Sharqiya Fort. Some say that the fort’s name origin is ‘Al Jalal,’ meaning ‘great beauty’ while others say the name is that of the Persian leader ‘Jalal Shah.’ The fort consists of two towers connected by a wall punctuated by holes for cannons. The building is completely isolated and cannot be accessed from its rocky façade; instead there is a small bridge and stairway ending at one of the holdouts for safe exit. Visitors can only view the castle from the outside.

Royal Opera House The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) is Oman’s premier venue for musical arts and culture. The opera house is located in Shatti al Qurum district of Muscat. Built on the royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the ruler of Oman, the Royal Opera House reflects contemporary Omani architecture, and has a capacity to accommodate maximum of 1,100 people. The opera house complex consists of a concert theatre, auditorium, formal landscaped gardens, cultural market with retail, luxury restaurants and an art centre for musical, theatrical and operatic productions.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque Close to the road leading to the heart of the capital Muscat stands the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Wilayat of Bawshar, attracting its visitors to interact with the spirit of Islam as a religion, science and civilisation. This mosque highlights its role as a scientific and intellectual source of knowledge across the Islamic world. After having an architectural competition to select the best design for Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, construction took six years. The mosque’s total capacity is 20,000 worshipers, and it covers an estimated area of 416,000 square metres. The main squareshaped prayer room can accommodate 6,500 worshipers and has a central dome that rises 50 metres above the floor.

42

HOTEL & TRAVEL

Visiting hours Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque every day, except Friday, from 8:30 until 11:00 am. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and in a way befitting places of worship. Women are also required to cover their hair.

The selection of artwork in the halls reflects the evolution and multiple forms of architectural decoration and the culture that has spread its rich patterns from Andalusia to China. Holy verses are inscribed two centimetres deep on stones in the outer areas, so they stay as long as the mosque remains standing. The mosque’s prayer hall floor is topped with a single piece Persian carpet composed of 1,700 million knots which took about 27 months to make, covering an area of 4,200 square metres, and weighing 21 tons. Also 28 different colours made from plant or natural dyes, in varying gradations, are used in this carpet’s weave.

Yitti Yitti is a seacoast town about 25km from Muscat. To get there you drive towards the Shangri-La Hotel and turn right from the round about. One of the city’s most popular beaches, the seacoast is rustic with rocky mountains in the backdrop. What you enjoy the most is the drive to Yitti. The famous rock formation on your left is a sign that you are approaching the beach.

QuraYyat

A’Sifah Jebel Sifah is located 45km away from downtown Muscat. The scenic destination is fringed by sandy white beaches and turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea, and surrounded by the majestic Hajjar mountain range. The distinctive appeal of Jebel Sifah as a destination lies in it being a beckoning getaway with close proximity to the capital city, accessible in less than an hour’s drive. On your way to Jebel Sifah, you will pass through the peaceful fishing village of Sifah. Beautiful views of the mountains, the sea and its friendly people all make this modest unobtrusive village a wonderful neighbour to have.

44

HOTEL & TRAVEL

Qurayyat is a small fishing village near Muscat, Oman. A popular stopping point on the way to Sur, Qurayyat is in itself also a very popular destination for Muscat. Qurayyat lies 80km from the capital, a 45-minute drive from Ruwi along a fast and relatively empty new stretch of dual carriageway which weaves between the craggy foothills of the Eastern Hajjar. Qurayyat had the dubious honour of being one of the first towns in Oman to experience the destructive attentions of the Portuguese fleet under Afonso de Albuquerque. The principal attraction is Qurayyat’s fort, which sits right in the middle of town, on your left as you drive in. Unfortunately, like so many other forts in Oman, it was closed at the time of writing for renovation. In the meantime, you can still admire the fine old wooden entrance door flanked by two rusty cannon and the shuttered ground-floor windows which ring the building on three sides.

Al Alam Palace Al Alam Palace, is the ceremonial palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The palace is located in the heart of the Old Muscat, it is surrounded by the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts and will soon be facing the upcoming National Museum of Oman. Former Sultans used to live in a house called Bait Al Alam which was demolished in the early 70s to build this new Palace in its place to be the official residence of the Sultan of Oman. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos rarely ever stays in Al Alam Palace as he seems to prefer his other residences in Al Seeb or Manah. However, this palace is the one used the most to receive high-ranking official guests and has hosted in the past the likes of the Queen of England and the Queen of the Netherlands. The palace is not open to the public, but tourists can walk around the yard and gardens in front of the palace at any time.

SUR, NIZWA & THE MOUNTAINS

TRAVE L

sur The nature of this region, in particular, blends three environments, each having its own distinctive flavour: the coastline, hugging the Arabian Sea and part of the Sea of Oman, the sand dunes, vibrant with the quiet nomadic life in a pastoral setting, and the towns which are the meeting point for both the nomadic and coastal environments. This region abounds in spectacular wadis. Wadi Tiwi, Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid are definitely worth visiting. The wadis form a unique environmental system characterised by variety, diversity, and a wealth of natural attractions.

Masirah Island The island is located in South East Oman, and lies within the administration of the Sharqiyah South Governorate. The island has a beautiful and diverse natural environment with an abundant marine life. It enjoys temperate weather all year round. The beaches provide an opportunity to see clusters of rare sea turtles laying their eggs. You can reach the island by a large ferry, known locally as Alyasoora. This is a large carrier that carries cars, goods and people to and from the island. The island can also be accessed by air.

The sand colour ranges from red to brown as far as the eye can see. It is the original homeland of the bedouins. This area attracts many desert adventure fans, and is preferred by visitors owing to its ease of accessibility and availability of nearby services.

Ayjah The Ayjah Lighthouse in Sur is quite impressive. The architecture is captivating with its three-story tower and domed roof. It lies in the backdrop of Ayjah Bay with the new bridge and all the boats surrounding it. This charming lighthouse is located on

Sinkhole Park Ras Ayqah, the high point on the east side of the Sur harbour entrance. Many people rush to see the turtle-nesting site outside of Sur and fail to spend some quality time in the town itself. If you ever make it to the lovely town of Sur, make sure to enjoy the serene beauty of Ayjah Bay.

HOTEL & TRAVEL

This strange wonder is found on Oman’s east coast approximately an hour and 45 minutes from Muscat. It’s basically a huge hole or cave-like structure filled with water from the close-by ocean. The water is azure blue and there are plenty of places to climb up the rocks and jump into the clear water. It is commonly called the Sink Hole and got its name from its sink-like shape, filled with water. The water has a very high salt level caused by evaporation.

Bibi Maryam mausoleum, Qalhat The ancient city of Qalhat, or Galhat, is located just over 20km north of Sur, in the Ash Sharqiyah Region of northeastern Oman. Very little remains of the ancient city of Qalhat, save for the now dome-less mausoleum of Bibi Maryam. The city served as an important stop in the wider Indian Ocean trade network, and was also the second city of the Kingdom of Ormus. Artifacts from as far away as Persia and China were found on-site. This Mausoleum was built for Baha al-Din Ayaz, successor of Mahmud b. Ahmad al-Qusi al-Qalhati, the founder of the Hormuz empire which flourished in the 8th/14th century. The mausoleum was built by the wife of Baha al-Din, Maryam, and is thus call the Bibi Maryam mausoleum.

On the far side of Ibra lies Al Mansfah village, a community of mansions once owned by prosperous merchants of the 19th century during the reign of Said the Great. With the decline of Said’s commercial empire these once stately mansions fell into ruin. Mountains surround Ibra and unlike many GCC countries there is a great view and terrain. The temperature is the same as everywhere and the summer months can get unbearably hot. However the winter is lovely and cool. There is very little rainfall in Ibra and it occurs mostly during the winter.

Tiwi and Wadi Tiwi A couple of kilometres south of Wadi Shab lies the almost identical Wadi Tiwi, another spectacularly deep and narrow gorge carved out of the mountains, running between towering cliffs right down to the sea. It’s less unspoiled than Wadi Shab, thanks to the presence of a road through the ravine (though, as at Wadi Shab, the dramatic scenery at the entrance has been ruined by the construction of a large flyover), although it compensates with its old traditional villages, surrounded by lush plantations of date and banana, and criss-crossed with a network of gurgling a falaj. The road into the wadi was being widened and modernised, running along the valley floor,

72

between plantations and past the rock pools which collect between the huge boulders below. After around five kilometres you’ll reach the picturesque village of Harat Bidah, where the road narrows dramatically, squeezing its way between old houses and high stone walls. Past here the tarmac ends and a rough track climbs steeply for a further five kilometres up to the village of Mibam. It is indeed a spectacular drive.

Wadi Shab This wadi is arguably one of the most gorgeous destinations in Oman. Beyond the breathtaking entrance, the wadi rewards you with views of aquamarine pools, waterfalls and terraced plantations; kingfishers add glorious splashes of colour. For the adventurous, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and a visit to a partially submerged cave.

Jaylah The funeral towers at Jaylah were built 4,500 years ago during a period of prosperity in Oman that was funded by the trade of bronze. Dozens of such towers are found around the Arabian peninsula but those at Jaylah are some of the best preserved. This is largely because of their isolation on the edge of the Salmah plateau where only a handful of people live. Indeed the first road up to Jaylah hamlet was built in the late 1980s and it was at this time that the German Professor Paul Yule first described the site. The towers are four to five metres in height and three to four metres in diameter. Most have an inner and outer wall with the space filled in with rubble. A central vertical cylinder was left empty for human remains and possessions. The towers are in an original state.

Al Kamil W’al Wafi

Al Kamil W’al Wafi is a wilayat of scenic contrasts with dramatic mountain profiles in the north, which give way to expansive gravel plains and sandy terrain as you sweep southwards. Amid this varied mix of landscapes are places of unparalleled charm, especially in the north and south of the wilayat. The wilayat’s main town, which lies about 279km from Muscat, is on the highway to Sur. The town’s rich historical heritage is reflected in the number of ancient fortifications dotting the landscape around. The most prominent is Al Shreah, a picturesque edifice located near the main souq, which also adorns the wilayat’s emblem. You may take the dolphin watching tours that are the highlight of this town.

Ras al Jinz Turtle reserve Ras al-Jinz (Ras al-Junayz), the easternmost point of the Arabian Peninsula, is an important turtlenesting site for the endangered green turtle. Over 20,000 females return annually to the beach where they hatched in order to lay eggs. Oman has an important role to play in the conservation of this endangered species and takes the responsibility seriously, with strict penalties for harming turtles or their eggs. The area is under government protection and the only way to visit the site is by joining an escorted tour. For further information about conservation measures in place to protect Oman’s turtles, contact the Environment Society of Oman. While the tour is intended for the well-being of the turtle, at peak holiday times large volumes of people flock to the reserve.

Thankfully groups are limited to 20 people per guide with no more than five guides in each session. Despite the reserve’s best efforts, there is something immensely intrusive about large, noisy groups gawping at such an intimate act, especially when flippers are lifted out of the way for better viewing and camera-wielding individuals chase the frightened turtles down the beach. As such, the experience may not be to everyone’s taste.

Al Hoota Cave

Wadi Bani Khalid

Located 203 kilometres from Muscat. The wilayat Bani Khalid weaves up across the eastern Al Hajjar Mountains to Bida village deep in the mountains. There you can enjoy the spectacular views of the fertile valley with its spreading trees and abundant water that tumbles down as waterfalls in some areas form natural pools of water. The road then cuts through the valley to reach Muqal town, well known for its cave. To explore this cave, you’ll have to exercise great caution, as you may need to crawl or even scramble in some places. Here the gushing waters creates a loud rushing sound and collects in pools, only to dissipate and gather in small lakes which the villagers have used to fill three irrigation canals.

Wadi Damm Wadi Damm is located near Al Ayn village, Wilayat Ibri, Al Dhahirah Governorate, and is about 45km from Ibri city. It is a seasonal wadi, dry most of the year. It relies on the rain that gathers in its water ponds. This wadi is remarkable for its characteristic rocky formations sculpted by erosion. Despite the small amount of water stored in its stream during the dry season, the stream is distinguished by a variety of smooth rocks, out of which nature has formed beautiful water ponds, and this smooth rocky nature is a feature of the water ponds.

Wadi Bani Awf, Bilad Sayt

Beyond Al Hoota Cave lies the start of the spectacular descent of the Western Hajar down a sheer escarpment through Wadi Bani Awf (or Auf), widely considered the most memorable off-road drive in the country. This is Oman at its most nerve-janglingly dramatic, with stupendous scenery and a rough, vertiginous track that challenges the skills of even experienced off-road drivers – not to be attempted lightly, and best avoided during or after rain. It is located not far from Bilad Sayt.

The trip up there alone is an adventure, with your four wheel drive passing through mountain villages, prairies and green valleys. This journey is filled with wonderful vistas and is a destination in and of itself. Atop this journey, at the Jebel Hareem summit high in the mountains, you are able to examine fossils dating back more than 250 million years, including from fish, shells and other marine life, as these peaks where back then below sea level.

The capital, Khasab, is a quaint fishing port largely unchanged by the modern world. The main attraction of this town is the Khasab Fort. The fort’s impressive setting dominates the coastline near the older part of town. Khasab Fort is a picturesque stronghold situated on the inner cove of Khasab Bay in the Wilayat of Khasab. Contained within its low, crenelated wall is a massive central tower that pre-dates the castle itself and preceded the arrival of Portuguese in the 16th century. This architectural excellence was restored by the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture in 1990.

Khawr Shamm This location is a must-visit to relax amid placid waters, marine life, secluded beaches and isolated outposts. A stopover at the Telegraph Island is a highlight of this trip. Dhow trips can also be arranged to visit the cliff side village of Kumzar. You can rent a 4WD to see Khawr Najd, Jebel Harim (the highest point in Musandam) and the Acacia forest near Sal al Ala.

The Strait of Hormuz Among the most fascinating reasons to visit Musandam, the important waterway The Strait of Hormuz lies right off the coast of the region. Named after the ancient Kingdom of Hormuz, the strait today sees 20-30 oil tankers pass through per day, making it one of the world’s major waterways and the busiest in maritime activities. Located on the Arabian Gulf and separating the Arabian Gulf on the one hand, and the Gulf of Makran, the Sea of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean on the other, the Strait of Hormuz is indeed strategic.

HOTEL & TRAVEL

One of the most inaccessible settlements in Oman, the famously remote town of Kumzar sits perched in solitary splendour at the northernmost edge of Musandam, hemmed in by sheer mountains and accessible only by boat. Sadly, outsiders have been banned from landing in the town since 2010 as a result of locals complaining about the intrusive behaviour of tourists. A visit to the town however involves sitting in your boat in the harbour about 100m offshore and seeing what you can, although it’s still well worth making the trip out here for the magnificent coastal scenery en route, as well as for the tantalising glimpse of Oman’s most reclusive town.

Kumzar Village

At the southern end of Musandam, straddling the border with the UAE, lies Dibba, a small town made up of three fishing villages. Each part comes under a different jurisdiction: Dibba Bayah is in Oman, Dibba al Hisn belongs to Sharjah, and Dibba Muhallab is part of Fujairah. The three villages share an attractive bay, fishing communities, and excellent diving locations. Dhow cruises can be arranged from each of these villages to take you to unspoilt dive sites along the remote eastern coast of the Musandam Peninsula. The Hajar range provides a wonderful backdrop. There is a good public beach abounding in beautiful shells.

Khareef in Dhofar Dhofar Governorate is famous for its seasonal weather, locally known as monsoon or ‘Khareef’, when it witnesses its best period, clothed in lush greenery and its hills surrounded by white fog. Light rains drizzle to cool the air. During this time, many visitors frequent it, especially from within Oman and the neighbouring countries. Salalah Tourism Festival takes place from July to August every year. The festival is part of Khareef that extends from the end of July until the beginning of September.

HOTEL & TRAVEL

Salalah Salalah receives its visitors with large vistas of grass and water mist. The unique climatic factors make Salalah a magical spot and the jewel of the Arabian Sea. Salalah is an ideal destination for both, leisure and adventurous holidays. Wonderful outdoor pursuits, excellent beaches, coconut palms, banana and papaya plantations make up the most of this city. The city is famous for its rich history, archeological remains and numerous frankincense trees.

Mughsail Bay

The tiny village of Mughsail itself is little more than a clump of houses on the hillside above the road. Turn left opposite the Al Maha petrol station down the road signed Al Marneef Cave and continue one kilometre to get to Mughsail’s blowholes, reached by a path beyond the parking lot and the Mocca Cafe. The blowholes comprise three small holes in the rock through

which jets of seawater shoot into the air. They’re particularly impressive during the Khareef, when they spout plumes of water up to 30m high, regularly drenching unwary hordes of screeching tourists. Outside the monsoon they are less memorable, and during the driest parts of the year they cease to blow altogether, although the subterranean groaning of wind and water, eerily amplified by the blowholes themselves, is still strangely impressive.

Jabal Samhan and Wadi Darbat Continue for six km beyond the town of Taqah to reach the turnoff on the left leading up into Jabal Samhan, the green coastal range which backs this section of the coast. Right next to the turning is the opening of Wadi Darbat, marked by a huge cliff of pockmarked travertine that transforms into a spectacular waterfall during the Khareef, probably Dhofar’s most photographed sight.

Al Baleed Archaeological Park In the last 150 years the new town of Salalah has grown out of the stones of the remains of the ancient Middle Age settlement al Baleed (from al Balad, meaning town), a spit of land in the lagoon at the eastern end of the beach at Salalah. Originally there were 148 pillars, which were laid in rows of four, surrounding an inner courtyard. A German archaeological team who also developed the educational concept of the archaeological park has carried out the excavation works. Al Baleed is a UNESCO World Heritage site. For a small fee, the grounds are already open to interested visitors.

The ruins of the town of Sumhuram are one of Dhofar’s most important archaeological sites. Sumhuram was formerly a major trading point on the Arabian frankincense route, but appears to have been abandoned in the 5th century AD. The remains of the town have now been meticulously restored, showing the foundations of houses, temples and streets protected by thick walls, more than 3m (10ft) deep in places. Immediately below Sumhuram, the idyllic Khawr Rawri is the largest of a dozen creeks between Salalah and Sadah. It is rich in fish and birdlife.

Situated on Sultan Qaboos Street, the ‘Land of Frankincense’ museum is one of the cultural lifelines of Salalah. Visitors can explore a large archaeological site and the museum displays an impressive collection of artefacts that depict the maritime history of Oman. The artefacts are as varied as the excavated columns built 2,000 years ago to stone tools used by fishermen. This is perhaps the best place to trace Oman’s history and gain insight into Oman’s prosperous past.

The scenic location of this natural spring is an excellent spot for bird watching. Seven different species of eagles have been identified at Ain Homran by a group of international bird watchers. Due to the nature of the place, you will find mosquitoes and insects around, so make sure to apply some cream.

The palace, known as al Husn Palace, was originally built by Sultan Turki in the nineteenth century, but has been extended by successive sultans, and it is now a big, modern complex of buildings, overlooking the beach, south of the city centre. It is surrounded on the landward side by a stone wall and entered through big teak doors. The stretch of beach immediately in front of the palace is off limits to the general public, but you can get quite close and take photographs of the palace.

Al Husn Palace

A quaint seaside town, Mirbat is complete with its own majestic castle, a souk, and the ruins of an old town dating back many hundreds of years. Visitors will also enjoy the opportunity to see local fishermen bringing in the day’s haul by the seaside, which they can buy there, and also at the souk.

Frankincense is the aromatic resin that is obtained from the trees of the genus Boswellia. Some trees that could grow up to seven feet tall could also be as old as thousands of years. Most of these trees are found towards the Empty Quarters. The traditional home of frankincense is Dhofar. As with rubber harvest, the tree is slit with a special knife called the mingaf collecting the milky white sap which is then crystalised. The Romans were the greatest consumers of frankincense. In addition to its aromatic fragrance, it can also be used as a therapeutic ingredient.

Frankincense trees

In the south of the sultanate, the mountains of Dhofar region extend from east to west, off the Al Hillaniyat Islands. In this region, the Samhan Mountains, with a maximum height of 2100m, include an Arabian Leopard Reserve in the east and Jabal Al Qamar in the west, which is the most prominent mountain range in the region, rising to an altitude of 2,500m. Samhan Mountain includes many plateaus punctuated by narrow and deep gorges, some of which are about 1,000m deep. Various plants grow in the plain of Jabal Samhan, such as acacia, gum trees and Frankincense trees.
