A Celebration of New Jersey Choreographers

FRI, MAY 4 AT 8PM & SAT, MAY 5 AT 8PM Presented by In July of 2017, SOPAC was awarded a grant by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in support of a choreographers’ showcase to be co-presented on the SOPAC main stage.

By presenting new dance works of nine of New Jersey’s finest choreographers, SOPAC continues its commitment to diverse and inspiring programming. The two performances, scheduled for May 4 and 5, will include works by prestigious NJSCA fellowship recipients Hillary-Marie, Lauren Connolly, Loretta Fois, Kyle Marshall, Stephanie Nerbak, Claire Porter, Samuel Pott, Keith Thompson, and Nancy Turano.

From the Executive Director Dear Friends, As we round the bend to the final stretch of our twelfth season, we are truly elated by the breadth of artistry we’ve been able to present to you this year, and the remarkable response we’ve received from you, our loyal patrons.

Through the end of February, our SOPAC presented shows have averaged over 86% of capacity. We expect that at least 25 of these shows will have sold-out by the end of May. With luminaries such as Andy Borowitz, Max Weinberg, Billy Collins, the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Tommy Emmanuel, and Catherine Russell, this season has been our most diverse and exciting.

This season we also welcomed our new theatre companyin-residence, American Theater Group, to SOPAC. Their first production of A Good Farmer in January brought over 1,300 guests into our theatre — many for the first time — for a thought-provoking and moving, dramatic piece about immigration. And we eagerly look forward to their next show in June, a world premiere musical entitled, Small Town Story.

Later in the Spring we will feature the return of Inspired Minds, our visual arts exhibit in The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery, featuring the works of high school students from throughout Essex County. Last year we had nearly 1,000 submissions for this juried exhibit.

At the end of June, we will bid farewell to long-time Board member and past President, Tony Leitner. It is a well-kept secret that for years Tony, and his wife Jennifer, were the guardian angels of SOPAC. Without their stunning generosity, SOPAC would not be here today. All of us who enjoy having this wonderful arts center in our midst, owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the Leitners.

And we could not be the burgeoning arts center that we have become without you. We are deeply grateful for your support in all the ways that you may be connected to SOPAC — as an audience member, donor, volunteer or artist. And your support made us New Jersey’s “Favorite Small Performing Arts Center” for the fourth year in a row.

American Theater Group Launches Inaugural Production A Good Farmer Poses Complex Questions The new year brought in A Good Farmer, the first production of the American Theater Group as SOPAC’s professional theatre company-inresidence. Sharyn Rothstein’s acclaimed play explores the complex issue of immigration, and its impact on a small farming community in upstate New York. Producer James Vagias assembled a stellar cast that brought to vivid life the hopes, dreams and hard choices that immigrants, their employers, and the entire community make as they do their best to survive.

Friendships are both destroyed, and made stronger, as each character must find answers for themselves.

Immigration lawyer Michael Noriega led an outstanding panel of people working in various arenas of social justice and immigration, along with playwright Rothstein, for an eye-opening discussion after the performance on January 28.

Meet SOPAC’s Member of the Year New Board Members Larry Brodey Mark Garner Radiates Zest for SOPAC

Having worked in the nonprofit arts industry for over 35 years, I have had the privilege to work with hundreds of board members. Board members are expected to support the organization they serve through the commitment of their time, wisdom and financial resources.

They are ambassadors for the organization, and they are vested with the responsibility of ensuring that the organization has the resources it needs to accomplish its mission.

SOPAC has a terrific Board of dedicated individuals. And one individual stands out as the exemplification of a stellar member: Larry Brodey.

Larry is the President and CEO of JACLO Industries, a manufacturer and distributer of high end bathroom faucets, showers and accessories and DURST Corp, specializing in plumbing and heating replacement supplies based in Cranford, New Jersey. Larry and his wife, Carol, have lived in South Orange for 10 years, and in West Orange before that.

Larry is a bigger than life, passionate, compassionate, bright, and incredibly committed individual. He joined the Board in 2015 and has set the bar for extraordinary engagement by a volunteer.

Someone once said, “Half of life is showing up.” Well, Larry shows up. He serves as Vice Chairman of the Board, and Chair of our Development Committee. He and his wife, Carol, host parties at SOPAC, bring their friends to numerous shows each year, ask their friends to donate to the organization, and the Brodeys lead by example through their very generous support of SOPAC. But it’s Larry’s amazing, genuine, and contagious enthusiasm for SOPAC that makes him stand out. Larry is “all in” and shares his love for SOPAC every moment that he is engaged with us. He is our Cheerleader-in-Chief.

In appreciation of his unparalleled dedication, the South Orange Performing Arts Center recognizes Larry Brodey as Member of the Year.

Mark Garner is Senior Vice President, Distribution and Digital Content Licensing at A+E Networks. Garner oversees digital on-demand program distribution and strategy and emerging digital business partnerships with traditional and emerging content distribution services. He also oversees analytics, marketing and product operations within the distribution unit at A+E Networks.

Mark earned his B.A. in Economics and Sociology from Stanford University. Born in Detroit and raised in the New York metropolitan area, he now resides in South Orange with his wife Suzette and son, Santos.

Randall Haase Randall Haase is a Managing Director of Loeb Partners Management and the Portfolio Manager of the Loeb Partners Total Return Fund focusing on public equity investments. He has appeared in numerous publications, including Barron’s, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Investor’s Business Daily, and has appeared on CNBC and Bloomberg News. In 1996, Barron’s ranked him #11 in the “Top 100 Fund Managers” in the U.S. Randall is currently a member of the Advisory Board for the Michael Price Student Investment Fund (MPSIF) at the New York University Stern School of Business, where he is also a guest lecturer at the graduate school of business. Randall received a B.S. from Lehigh University and an M.B.A. from New York University.

Summer Jones Summer Jones has served as the Director of Technical Support Services within Montclair State University’s Division of Information Technology since 2010 and was recently promoted to Assistant Vice President, Technical Support Services. She oversees the Technology Solutions Center which include the University Help Desk, Desktop Support Services, Audio-Visual Services and the Public Computing Labs. Some of her achievements include implementing a 24/7 virtual computing lab, expanding remote services through the University Help Desk and migrating mediated classrooms across campus to the latest technology standards. In 2016, she was awarded a $6 million dollar capital refresh to update 135 mediated spaces across campus over the next 5 years. Summer has been instrumental in bringing an internship program to her department that offers students the opportunity to gain work experience and learn technical and customer service skills in an IT environment. Carl Wolf

Carl Wolf has over 35 years of experience in the management and operations of companies in the food industry. Carl has served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of MamaMancini’s Holdings, Inc, a public company since February 2010.

He was the founder, majority shareholder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO of Alpine Lace Brands, Inc., a Nasdaq listed public company with over $125 million in wholesale sales.

He also founded and managed MCT Dairies, Inc., a $60 million international dairy component resource company.

Other experience in the food industry includes his role as co-chairman of Saratoga Beverage Company and advisor to Mamma Sez Biscotti, a snack and bakery product company.

Previously, he served as Director and on the Audit and Development committees of American Home Food Products, Inc. a publicly traded marketer of Artisanal Cheeses LLC, from 2007 to 2009. Carl also served as Chairman of the Board of Media Bay, a direct seller of spoken word through its audio book club, old-time radio classic activities and download spoken content, from 2002 to 2004.

Board Members Give in Many Ways SOPAC’s Board of Governors are wonderful volunteers who give of themselves in many ways. Not only do they provide governance, and fiduciary oversight, they give of their unique talents. Here are just a few examples of the ways they give to SOPAC: Johanna Wright, fondly known as “Coach” for her many years in the Maplewood School District, serves as the charming and lively Mistress of Ceremonies for our annual Poetry Out Loud regional recitation competition.

Incredible chef Diana Hart has been providing all kinds of goodies for SOPAC receptions for many years. Though there are rarely leftovers, staff members can be found rummaging through the kitchen the day after an event—just in case!

Hearst Foundations Awards Major Grant to Support Arts Instruction in Local Schools SOPAC is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded its largest single institutional grant to date, from the Hearst Foundations in support of Arts Education programs. The $75,000 grant from the Hearst Foundations will make it possible for SOPAC to expand long-term, sequential performing arts instruction, offering students opportunities to learn from professional artists through artist-in-residence programs.

In addition, it will increase access for students from low-income communities to attend SOPAC’s successful School Performance series. School Performances ignite the imagination and cultivate lifelong enthusiasm in a variety of performing arts disciplines for students Pre-K through 12th grade. Whether it is a popular children’s story, a Shakespeare classic, or a fun math or science program, the shows complement classroom lesson plans by engaging

students in entertaining and educational performing arts experiences.

SOPAC has offered arts education programming since 2006. However, it is only within the last 3 years that its arts education programming has blossomed in the region. During this time, the number of students served by SOPAC arts education initiatives more than doubled.

This growth can be attributed to new leadership who brought a strong arts education focus to the work and staff who are deeply committed to expanding SOPAC’s footprint in the community and especially in the schools SOPAC has been working with the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music to provide classical music residency programs at schools in the neighboring communities of East Orange

and Orange for several years. With this grant, SOPAC will expand residency programming to the South Orange/ Maplewood school district and include dance instruction in partnership with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

A Resource for the Community Since 2013, the Wae Center, a holistic, creative and expressive arts learning center for people with disabilities, have enjoyed guided tours through The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery at SOPAC. Gallery Curator Jeremy Moss explores each exhibition with members providing an educational experience while encouraging participants to express their personal experience through meaningful dialogue, as well as their own creative interpretations of the toured exhibitions. Jeremy states, “I am always fascinated and excited at the prospect of a visit from the Wae Center and to hear what each member will glean from each piece of art on the walls of the Herb & Milly Iris Gallery.”

After each tour, members and the curator take some time to create their own works of art.

Jeremy also noted, “It’s incredible to see how Wae members absorb different facets of the art work and then craft their own interpretations on paper; it’s a true pleasure to be a part of this process.”

“I cannot express enough how powerful these types of interactions are for our members; they feel like they are a part of something bigger than their day-to-day life,” said Harry Klein, Wae Art Studio Manager. “Our primary curriculum goals are for our members to be immersed in a full and rich life; the SOPAC visits and workshops contribute to our ability to achieve that goal.”

We kicked off the season with Tom Rush & Livingston Taylor and then brought you The Hot Sardines, Colin Hay, U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, comedians Sinbad, Gary Gulman, Jim Breuer and Ryan Hamilton, rockers Willie Nile & James Maddock and Matthew Sweet.

The great Tommy Emmanuel cast his guitar magic over all of us, and Giants of Jazz brought some of the greatest names in Jazz to our stage to pay tribute to bassist Buster Williams.

We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and were awestruck by the beautiful harmonies and songwriting of Darlingside.

January brought us the powerhouse Afro-Cuban All Stars and the inaugural production of American Theater Group at SOPAC — A Good Farmer. The sassy Catherine Russell brought down the house with songs from the Harlem Renaissance.

Andy Borowitz of The Borowitz Report made his SOPAC debut in a two-show night in March and Broadway diva Laura Benanti showed off her soaring high notes the next week. Folk-singing trio Red Molly paid us a visit and Aztec Two-Step brought the timeless songs of Simon & Garfunkel back into our world.

Max Weinberg’s Jukebox has achieved those coveted words “SOLD OUT,” while tap dance wizard Savion Glover will bring his fancy footwork to the stage May 19 and proves that he is indeed “the greatest tap dancer of all time!” American Theater Group’s world premiere musical Small Town Story brings a wonderful close to our season. With your support we will continue to fill our building with great artists, and the people who love to see them in all their glory!

SOPAC Bartender Keeps ’Em Laughing Mark Bracci Mark Bracci is a Chief Compliance Officer by day and a SOPAC bartender extraordinaire by night. For almost ten years, Mark has been delighting SOPAC patrons with a smile and a joke as he hands over their drinks. Twenty to thirty seconds of quality connection with each patron is enough to keep him coming back year after year for the familiar faces and the occasional brush with a great artist like Arlo Guthrie or Ben Taylor, son of James. But even more important than the SEC or stocking a good bar is his 24-year marriage to the love of his life Catherine Bracci, and their three beautiful daughters.

Box Office Manager Sheila Corbin-Daniels Defines Customer Service Sheila Corbin-Daniels Even when there is another window available, SOPAC patrons have been known to stand in line just to talk to Sheila Corbin Daniels. She has a well-earned loyal following from her 12 years as SOPAC Box Office Manager. Sheila remembers filling ticket orders by hand while the building was still under construction. These days, however, she enjoys telling people, “I’m sorry, but that show is sold out! You need to think ahead and call earlier.” When asked about her way with people, Sheila responds, “Now, I’m not all that and a bag of chips, but from the time that I was knee high to a grasshopper, I was taught to take pride in what you’re doing. The folks that you think aren’t paying attention will pay attention—at some point.” Before coming to SOPAC, Sheila spent 32 years as a paralegal serving both the court system and private practice.

Volunteers Make All the Difference How long have you volunteered at SOPAC? Sandra: Since October 2017.

Simone: Since 2009.

What has been your experience here at SOPAC? Sandra: It was so easy to fit in here and it’s a fun volunteer opportunity.

SOPAC offers the kind of environment that feels like family and there are perks such as free tickets to performances. It has been great!

Simone: I have been exposed to so many cultural events, and meeting all kinds of different people.

Why do you continue to volunteer at SOPAC?

Where would you like to see SOPAC 5 years from now?

Sandra: I wanted to give back to my community and this was a perfect opportunity. I wanted to be a part of someplace that is exciting and dynamic, I have the opportunity to work with wonderful people who care about the success of SOPAC.

Sandra: I would like the community to view SOPAC as one of the best places in the area for all sorts of events and activities for people of all ages. That is, it provides a little something for everyone looking for entertainment whether it’s an evening out with friends, date night or a special occasion.

Simone: I enjoy the variety of the shows, giving back to the community, and most of all, these are the nicest people I have ever met.

Simone: I hope that we give more and more of a variety of entertainment for people from all walks of life, and that when people walk through these doors they view it as an escape.
