Welcome to Wabash County from the staff of the Wabash Plain Dealer, Wabash County’s only daily newspaper.

The Wabash Plain Dealer was established in 1859 and has been located in nine different locations around the downtown area. It has been at its current location, 123 W. Canal St., since 1969. The newspaper was purchased by the Don Nixon family in 1923, and Nixon Newspapers Inc. was formed under the direction of Eugenia Nixon Honeywell and her sons, Joe and John, in 1934.

In 1998, Paxton Media Group of Paducah, Ky. bought the newspaper from the Nixons. The firm is a fourth generation, family-owned media company founded in 1896. Over the years, the Wabash Plain Dealer has won numerous awards for writing, editing, advertising, circulation, photography and even typography.

The Wabash Plain Dealer is now published five days a week, Sunday & Tuesday through Friday. It also publishes a weekly shopper called the Current Bargains.

Being rich in history and adaptable to the constant changes in the media world, the Wabash Plain Dealer has chronicled the daily happenings of the county and will do so for many years to come. Modoc drew

nation’s attention to Wabash

No one knew it at the time, but a group of barking dogs and three elephants brought nationwide attention to Wabash County in November 11, 1942. For it was on that day that the Great American Circus came to Wabash to stage a fundraising event for Wabash High School.

Among the acts in the circus was famed animal trainer Terrell Jacobs and his three Indian elephants, Empress, Judy and Modoc. The animals were tethered outside the big top when barking dogs spooked the animals, causing them to break free and begin what would be a fiveday rampage through Wabash and Huntington counties.

Judy and Empress wandered the nearby neighborhood, but Modoc bolted toward the downtown area.

As the 12-year-old giant elephant strolled downtown, it startled those who were tending to their daily routines in the business district.

As Modoc neared the Bradley Brothers Drug Store, a patron opened the door, and the scent of roasting peanuts soon attracted the 1,900-pound beast.

Michael Beauchamp co-owns Modoc’s Market with his wife Angie. The now coffee shop is located in the former Bradley Brothers Drug Store. Beauchamp has researched the life of Jacobs and the story of Modoc. He even

impersonates Jacobs, complete in animal tamer uniform, telling the tale of Modoc to area groups.

According to coffee shop’s webpage, Modoc “chased Chauncey Kessler, who wore a long muskrat coat, through the 42-inch door on Miami Street and using her long trunk rolled Mrs. Kessler onto the floor, all the while flabbergasting pharmacy clerk Helen Myers into shear fright behind the soda fountain.

“Modoc knocked over the peanut roaster and scared up her fill of the little shelled delicacies, and then bidding ado, she smashed through the back door, frame and all, of the New Bradley Building onto Market

Street.”

The elephant stopped at a business across the street, the Union Cigar Store, but then continued on down the street. Today, the Market Street Grill is located in the former cigar store.

While Judy and Empress were quickly caught by circus personnel, Modoc managed to evade captors for five days. The animal wandered through Wabash and Huntington counties, reportedly crossing the Wabash River five times.

A posse made up of circus officials, Wabash Police, and the sheriff’s departments from Wabash and Huntington counties hunted for Modoc over those five days. Meanwhile, the adventure attracted headlines in not only the local newspaper, the Wabash Plain Dealer, but in newspapers far and wide across the country. It even drew the attention of Indiana Gov. Henry F. Shricker, who joined the posse and tried to capture Modoc as she rambled across the countryside.

Modoc was eventually captured thanks to the services of “Corona” Ezra Smith, a circus trainer from the Carolinas.

According to the Modoc’s Market webpage, “Smith finally lured Modoc onto her trailer chanting his elephant ‘mumbo jumbo’ and dispensing twenty-six loaves of bread like doggie treats.”

Jacobs reportedly treated the elephant’s nerves and a cold it had caught during her adventure with six quarts of whiskey. It also drank about thirty gallons of water and ate continuously throughout the night in an effort to gain back the 800-plus pounds it lost on its journey.

Known as “The Lion King,” Jacobs was born in Grant County and worked for 16 different circuses over his 40-year career, including the Ringing Brothers – Barnum and Bailey Circus. He also owned his own circus for a point. Jacobs died on Dec. 24, 1958, at his home in Twelve Mile, Ind. He is buried in Wabash’s Falls Cemetery.

Canal was major

factor in developing Wabash County

The Wabash and Erie Canal, though short-lived, played a great role in helping develop Wabash and much of Indiana in the early 19th century. The U.S. Congress provided a land grant to the State of Indiana to create the canal. Work on the canal began in Fort Wayne in 1832 and was finished in Evansville in 1853. By 1870, the railroad made its mark and four years later the canal system was abandoned totally. However, today there are still traces of it that can be found in Wabash County.

Surveyed in 1818, the canal was one of the major reasons that Indiana became a state. To obtain the land for the canal, the 1826 Treaty of Paradise Spring was signed. Today, the ground at which the treaty was signed is the Paradise Spring Historical Park, located at the intersection of Market and Allen streets. The park includes walkways and a trail that leads along the Wabash River, which was the main route during the canal days.

Early on, it wasn’t sure if the canal would indeed pass through Wabash County. Officials from Ohio wanted the canal to run south of Cincinnati.

A compromise was reached, and ground on the canal was broken on Feb. 22, 1832 in Fort Wayne. A six-mile stretch of the canal was finished by June 1834 and later that year, contracts for a stretch in Wabash County was let. By July 4, 1835, the canal stretched from Fort Wayne to Huntington, connecting the Maumee and Wabash rivers.

It was either on July 4, 1836, or

July 4, 1837, various histories are conflicting on the exact day, that the canal boat Indiana, captained

by Dana Columbia, was the first to reach Wabash. It was followed shortly later by the Prairie Hen. The canal reached Peru in 1837 and either that year or in 1838 -again, historical reports conflict -- reached Logansport. It was in Logansport where a turning basin was constructed, allowing the canal boats to turn around and continue back the way it came. An aqueduct across the Eel River was constructed in 1840, and the canal reached past Lafayette by 1847.

Twenty-one years after the first shovel for the canal was turned in Fort Wayne, it reached its final destination in Evansville. According to legend, the year the canal reached Evansville, the railroad -- which quickly marked the canal system’s demise -- reached that city as well.

There is a record of three locks having been built in Wabash County.

One is located between Wabash

and Richvalley, near the Norfolk and Southern underpass on old U.S. 24. The second, the Kerr Lock, is in Lagro and is still visible today. A third, located in Wabash, vanished in the 1940s when it was filled in.

The lock system was important to the canals. A boat captain signaled the lock tender that the vessel was approaching by blowing either a tin or brass horn. The lock gates were controlled by 10-inch timbers that were 20-feet long. The gates were opened by hand, and from time to time boat passengers and crew members needed to help push against an 11-foot head of water at the gates.

The locks were wide enough for one boat to pass through at a time.

Eastbound boats had the right-ofway, as they were traveling with the current. When two boats met along the canal, the westbound boat would stop and the horse or mule team would move to the outside of the tow path, causing the boat to drift to the opposite side of the canal until the

tow line sank and set anchor. The eastbound team, using the inside of the tow path, stepped over the loose rope, pulled the boat over the submerged line and the westbound boat then continued its journey. The canal’s tow path was 10-feet wide, and the path varied on which side it was on, depending on the terrain alongside the river.

Ironically, the canal system helped bring about its own demise.

In 1854, just one year after the canal reached Evansville, four boatloads of iron arrived in Wabash, iron which was used in creating the railroad system here. In 1856, the first passenger train arrived.

While the canal system continued for another 20 years, the impending doom could be ea sily seen.

Railroads were a faster mode of transportation. By 1861, the railroad had reported earning more than $31,000 in one week, nearly $10,000 per week more than one year earlier.

Use of the railroad continued to increase, just as use of the canal continued to decrease.

According to records, the canal transported, among other things, 91,711 barrels of f lour, 882,765 bushels of wheat in 1847. By 1859, the amount of flour carried on canal boats dropped to 28,680 barrels while the amount of wheat dropped to 14,805 bushels.

Although the canal was a failure, the fact that the canal did travel through Wabash made it a center for industry and trade.

And in the years after it left,

the canal was still serving the community, as the former towpaths were used as the right-of-way for the interurban street car system that served Wabash for many years.

In addition to the Kerr Locks in Lagro and the remnants of the locks near Richvalley, there is little evidence of the canal system in Wabash visible today. The rear doors on the buildings on the south side of Canal Street offer some of the evidence, as they were built there to face the canal docks which ran directly behind them.

Likewise, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, built for the Irish laborers who helped dig the canal, still stands. Though no longer an actual church, Mass is said at the site one Sunday per month.

North Manchester native served 2 terms as vice president

The Wabash County town of North Manchester lays claim to being the home of former Vice President Thomas A. Marshall.

Marshall, who served as vice president under President Woodrow Wilson, served one term as governor of Indiana before moving to the White House.

The son of Daniel and Martha Marshall, Thomas was born on March 14, 1854, the second of two Marshall children. An older sister, Susan Elizabeth, died in infancy at 1853.

Daniel Marshall moved to North Manchester in the early 1850s, and was appointed as postmaster in 1853. The family moved from North Manchester in 1856, headed for Rantoul, Illinois, after Martha Marshall developed a case of tuberculosis. Her husband felt the prairie air might be better for her. From there the family moved to Kansas, then LaGrange, Mo., eventually returning to Indiana in 1860. The family purchased property in Pierceton in 1862, and eight years later moved to Columbia City, where he practiced medicine until his death in 1892.

Thomas Marshall spent his formative years in Pierceton.

While growing up, he attended high school in Warsaw and Fort Wayne, eventually being accepted at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, from where he graduated in 1873.

After graduation, he began studying law under the tutelage of a Columbia City attorney and, in 1875, was appointed an attorney.

Marshall practiced law from 1876 until 1909. During this time, he became heavily involved with the Democratic Party. His popularity and name appeal in the state, largely gained by stumping for other Democratic candidates, led him to be elected Indiana’s 27th governor in 1909. His popularity among Democrats, and the fact that Indiana was considered by many to be a swing stated in the 1912 presidential election, Marshall was tabbed to be Wilson’s vice presidential candidate.

He served in the position during both of Wilson’s terms in the White

House.

Although he served in the position, Marshall wasn’t overly fond of the position. In fact, according to author Mark O. Hatfield in his book “Vice Presidents of the United States, 1789-1993”, Marshall claimed “that most of the ‘nameless, unremembered’ jobs assigned to him had been concocted essentially to keep vice presidents from doing any harm to their administrations.”

In his book, Hatfield asserts that Marshall’s disdain for the position is largely found in his attitude toward attending Cabinet meetings.

“Vice President Marshall stopped going after a single session,” Hatfield wrote. “When asked why, he replied that he realized ‘he would not be listened to and hence would be unable to make any contribution.’”

Many of Marshall’s comments throughout the years also proved his displeasure with the office.

President of the United States,” he is quoted as saying. “But if I sought a blessing for a boy I would not pray that he became Vice President.”

Marshall also is credited with saying, “Once there were two brothers: One ran away to sea, the other was elected vice president, and nothing was ever heard from either of them again.”

Hatfield noted that even as President of the U.S. Senate, M a r sh a l l w a s of t en t i m e s overshadowed by Indiana’s two Democratic senators, Benjamin

Shively and John Worth Corn.

During World War I, Marshall toured the country delving speeches bolstering the countr y’s war efforts. It was during this time that Marshall helped pass regulations -brought on by anti-war senators -- to allow filibusters be ended by a twothirds majority vote. A variation of the rule is still in place today.

Marshall could have assumed the presidency during his second term, when, in October 1919, President Wilson suffered an incapacitating stroke. Marshall was kept out of the

loop by those close to Wilson, even refusing to keep him updated on the condition of the president. That, they believed, would prevent him from setting his sights on assuming the presidency.

Many urged Marshall to assume a role as acting president while Wilson recovered. However, the North Manchester native refused to do so, fearing it would create a precedent for future administrations.

As Hatfield noted, “His years in Washington had convinced him that he desired the good will of others rather than the ‘pomp or power’ of the presidency. Rather than act as president, or even preside over cabinet meetings, Marshall contented himself with replacing Wilson as ‘official host’ for the many visiting European royalty and other dignitaries who came to Washington to offer thanks for American assistance during the First World War.” Marshall was urged by many Washington insiders to run for the presidency in 1920 and again in 1924, but he declined to do so. Rather, he and his wife, Lois Irene, and their adopted daughter, Morrison “Izzy”, returned to Indiana.

Marshall died on June 1, 1925, and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Marshall’s boyhood home was located at 124 E. Main St., in North Manchester. It was moved to 102 E. Third St. in 1869 by Daniel Marshall’s brother, Milborn. It was moved again to 902 Walnut St. by Bart Krisher in 1905.

The North Manchester Historical Society purchased the home in 1992 and two years later moved it to its current location at 409 N. Market St. The refurbished home is open from 1-4 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month for tours.

Wabash is a stellar community

Ask anyone in the City of Wabash, and they will tell you that Wabash is a Stellar Community.

It’s not just their opinion. It’s a fact. For in August, Wabash was one of two Indiana cities named Stellar Communities Designees for 2014.

The Stellar Communities Program is a collaboration between the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). It is designed to support comprehensive community development projects to make wide ranging quality of life impacts through the collaboration among public agencies and community partners. Wabash has nine initiatives with a price tag of $28,335,517, of which $15,640,999 is pledged from city coffers, private investment and other sources.

That figure represents 55.2 percent of the total, meaning that another 44.8 percent, or $12,694,650.

“Wow,” an emotional Wabash Mayor Robert Vanlandingham said in August 2014 and the rest of the Wabash contingent took to the stage at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis after Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann announced Wabash and the city of Huntingburg were named the Stellar Communities Designees.

“I’ve been trying to think for some time about what to say. I thought I had it all figured out until I heard Wabash, Indiana, and I totally lost it,” the mayor continued. “I am so proud of my community, my people.

I think it’s neat to be able to stand up here before all these winners – and we’re all winners.”

The mayor, as he did throughout the entire process, said Wabash’s success was due to a total community project. Over the last 12 years, cooperation among the

City of Wabash, Wabash County and the Town of North Manchester has grown to proportions it has never been at before, he noted.

“This here is the final step in that direction,” he said.

He also praised the influx of youth that have returned to the city and who are helping to lead it into the future.

“The committees from Huntingburg and Wabash prepared outstanding plans that impressed our selection team,” she said after the ceremony.

“The transformational projects proposed by both communities are examples of the positive economic impact that can be achieved through thoughtful planning and broad-based public and private sector communities.”

The lieutenant governor later said, “This is what makes me have great confidence in our smaller communities around the state of Indiana are going to prosper just like our larger cities,” she said. “Indiana is going to boom not only in our urban centers. But in our rural communities and our smaller cities as well. I could not be prouder of Wabash and Huntingburg and the great Stellar programs they put together.”

Celebrating 76 Seasons of Symphonic Sound The Manchester Symphony Orchestra kicked off its 76th season with the concert, “Vive la France!” in late October.

The concert celebrated French composers, and featured the work of guest artist Kelly Hornbarger, flute, performing the virtuosic piece “Fantasie Brillante from Carmen.”

The Manchester Symphony Orchestra serves Wabash County and the region. This tradition has its roots in its founding in 1939 by citizens of Wabash County and what was then Manchester College. That partnership continues today, with a carefully crafted collaboration of professional and community musicians, along with selected faculty, staff, and student musicians of Manchester University.

Scott Humphries, an assistant professor at Manchester University

and director of instrumental studies and music education, conducts the Manchester Symphony Orchestra and MU Symphonic Band. He is also principal conductor of the Fort Wayne Area Community Band.

Other performances this season: Dec. 7 – Magnificat in D major, BWV 243 by J.S.
