ACCREDITED PROGRAMS The University of Puerto Rico is the only public university on the island. Out of 11 campuses, RĂ­o Piedras was founded first and it is the largest campus. It is the most affordable university in Puerto Rico, and we are committed to providing a quality and affordable education to all of our students. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Puerto Rico Council on Education accredit the University of Puerto Rico. The UPR holds the highest number of accreditations from agencies and professional organizations that monitor the best educational and professional practices.

LEARN IN SPANISH/ LEARN IN ENGLISH Most classes are taught in Spanish. However, many departments also offer courses in English. Presently, more than 100 courses are offered in English. This information may be useful depending on your field of study. Textbooks, reference materials, and many other resources are available in English. This will help you manage your way through your program of study. To help you make the transition into our language and culture, your academic program can be coordinated with: Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (DECEP) The Institute of Intercultural and Multicultural Communication offers Spanish as a Second Language courses at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Interdisciplinary and Multicultural Institute (INIM) INIM offers courses on cultural studies to help immerse you in Puerto Rican culture and customs. Field trips and cultural visits are organized by the program. INIM promotes an international perspective on academic content and curricular experiences within the context of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.



RESEARCH Academic life at university is not only limited to teaching and developing skills and abilities. It is especially committed to creating knowledge, searching for creative solutions to real problems, the effort to better understand our world and the universe, as well as artistic and literary creation. At the UPR, an important portion of this work takes place in sophisticated laboratories and important research centers, where graduate and undergraduate students conduct research under the guidance of highly regarded experts in their respective areas of specialization.

The University of Puerto Rico, RĂ­o Piedras Campus is the only institution on the island certified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as a public research university. Our campus has the best and most diverse academic offering in the entire UPR educational system. Our students are recognized both in Puerto Rico and abroad for their artistic contributions, community initiatives, scientific research, creative projects, and athletic achievements.

LABORATORIES In order to provide the necessary support to aid in the teaching-learning process, we make science, mathematics, engineering, and language laboratories available to you, as well as workshops in areas such as nursing, architecture, fine arts, education, office systems, business administration, and more.

FINANCIAL AID You can receive financial aid at the UPR. As a public institution, the University of Puerto Rico cares about its students’ education expenses, which is why our tuition costs are the lowest in Puerto Rico. The UPR has a Financial Aid Office on campus. The office awards scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities to eligible students, both graduate and undergraduate. • • • • • •

During the summer session, there are no money allowances for financial aid or tuition payment. Financial assistance opportunities are limited. The amounts determined vary according to the surplus, the number of students enrolled and their eligibility.

SECURITY Our campus has the Security and Risk Management Division (DSMR). Security guards patrol the campus day and night, and there is a 24-hour telephone service. All accesses to campus and parking lots have surveillance. The campus has a mini bus service that runs between the parking lots and circulates the entire campus. The service is free for students. Our institution complies with federal regulations and the provisions in Title Nine and the Jeanne Clery Act. Security personnel is well-trained to deal with any emergencies that may arise on campus.

LIBRARIES The UPR’s technology resources provide access to a catalog of over one million titles available in libraries and seminar rooms. This catalog can be accessed on campus and remotely, over the internet, from any location, on or off campus. The José M. Lázaro Library is the main library on campus. There are specialized libraries in the School of Architecture, the College of Natural Sciences, the School of Law, and the School of Planning. Smaller research libraries are also located in other departments.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES The UPR understands that support services are essential for students to successfully complete their degrees. To this end, the Student Support Services office provides guidance to students in their academic endeavors. This unit organizes group events and individual guidance. The Office for Students with Disabilities facilitates the integration of students with mobility needs or other disabilities so they can benefit from all the resources available on campus. The Student Ombudsman Office provides guidance services for conflict resolution between students, students and professors, or students and administrators. The office mediates and helps find solutions for situations in the academic environment that may affect students. Through this process, they help find solutions that the parties involved can agree on.

The General Student Council represents the interests of the student body. You can participate in or join one of the more than 80 active student organizations on campus. These include organizations associated with the sciences, community service, religious groups, professional practice, or other creative endeavors. The well-known and highly recognized university choir, the tuna, and the traveling theater have traveled around the world and earned important international awards. Our campus offers you the opportunity to develop your artistic talents in the choir, band, theater groups, and courses in the visual arts, music, drama, art exhibits, and much more. There is a place for you in this vibrant learning community.

HOUSING/ PLAZA UNIVERSITARIA RESIDENCE Plaza Universitaria is the designated residence for outof-state, exchange students, and international students. It is located on Avenida Universidad, a minute away from campus. Apartments have two individual bedrooms and students share the bathroom and common areas. Each apartment has a bathroom and a small dining table. Rooms are airconditioned and internet accessible. Your sleeping area is private and equipped with a bed and a desk, separated by a door from the rest of the apartment. Each apartment has a small kitchenette with a microwave oven and a small refrigerator. Full kitchens are communal and shared by all residents on the floor. Single rooms may be available but at a higher rate. The residence has a coin laundry. Security personnel works 24/7.


RIO PIEDRAS NEIGHBORHOOD/ COMMUNITY LIFE RĂ­o Piedras is a bustling neighborhood that surrounds the campus. The farmers market is a great place to eat at affordable prices and to get high-quality local produce. There is a lot of commercial activity in the area. The town is connected by buses and the train to other parts of the metropolitan area. You can reach shopping malls, supermarkets, and even the beach in less than half an hour. Cultural activities, concerts, art exhibits, and student performances take place on the streets of this neighborhood with the participation of the residents and the community.


MEDICAL SERVICES The UPR has a medical services office located on campus. Doctors and nurses offer a primary service available to the entire university community. If necessary or in case of an emergency, they will refer patients to nearby hospitals. The university requires that all students acquire the institutional medical insurance plan, at a reasonable cost. The insurance plan includes a wide network of providers, laboratories and pharmacies in Puerto Rico. Prices for the basic insurance plans are included; students can extend coverage after one year of studies.

SPORTS Where sports are concerned, the “Gallitos” and “Jerezanas” have been the overall champions of the local Intercollegiate Athletics League for 24 seasons! All major sports are represented in our campus: softball, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, track and field, and others. Many of our athletes have been members of the Puerto Rico Olympic delegation. We participate in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region.

STUDY ABROAD/ INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL Our campus promotes and facilitates student participation in our diverse study abroad and exchange programs. Our campus has over 40 active agreements that facilitate student mobility. Students’ preferred destinations include Europe, South America, and Asia. Pell grants and student loans can be used for studyrelated travel. Other federal grants are also available.
