Camp prepares children and youth for the future by immersing them in the real world of people and hands-on experiences. At camp children have numerous opportunities to try their hand at everything from new subject matter to challenging new tasks to making new friends and navigating failure through trial and error. Children develop key relationships with caring adult role models and peer relationships that may last a lifetime. These experiences support the development of resiliency in children and are developed through interpersonal relationships and experiential learning. The Parent Curve* reports that in 2017 children under age 9 spent an average of two hours and 19 minutes daily on digital media. For 8 to 12 year olds the numbers are higher. Older children and youth spend 32 hours per week and 1,664 hours per year. Screen time is not all bad, but recent research suggests that developmental delays and poorer social skills may be unintended outcomes of high exposure to digital media in place of human interaction.
