10 DECA Activities for the Second Quarter

NOV-DEC 2017

ON-DEMAND E-LEARNING: ANYTIME, ANYWHERE We know the busy schedule of a DECA advisor – teaching your classes, managing your DECA chapter, overseeing your school-based enterprise, and giving your personal time to help your DECA members prepare for competitive events or host a chapter activity. We also know that DECA advisors are always looking to enhance their teaching and DECA chapters simultaneously. That’s why we have developed a series of short, ondemand webinars. We’ve now made it even easier for you to access the on-demand webinars by putting them all in one place on our website, under the Classroom tab. It’s called "Advisor E-Learning" and can also be accessed directly at www.deca.org/classroom/advisore-learning/. In this one location, you can get information regarding DECA’s programs. Currently, the following webinars are available: • Get Acquainted with DECA’s New Online Membership System • 2017-2018 Updates to DECA’s High School Competitive Events • How to Conquer Your Chapter Campaigns This Year • Explore DECA’s Elevate Chapter Strategy • Learn More About DECA’s School-based Enterprise Program • Social Media at the Chapter Level • Participating in DECA’s Virtual Business Challenge • Beyond the Stage The webinars are short – usually around 10-15 minutes, giving you the “must know” information and providing links to additional, relevant resources. You can watch them – on your schedule – as you find that short window of time in your busy day. The website is updated each week with a new webinar and will continue through the end of this school year. Be sure to check out this amazing new resource designed to help you serve as a DECA advisor.

COMPETITIVE EVENTS

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DECA’S NEW ENTREPRENEURSHIP EVENTS DECA is introducing two new competitive events focused on entrepreneurship for the high school division during the 2017-2018 school year. Joining the official competitive events listing are the Entrepreneurship Individual Series Event (ENT) and the Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making Event (ETDM). These event guidelines will be consistent for their respective event categories However, there are key highlights you should know about these events. Entrepreneurship is defined as the ability to recognize opportunities and to act on them, determine needs, identify markets, utilize marketing research, identify sources of capital and use management skills. The performance indicators used to develop the role-plays, case studies and exam questions come from a new performance indicator list called Entrepreneurship. The list is composed of performance indicators from the Business Administration Core, Business Management and Administration Cluster, Finance Cluster and Marketing Cluster. Each performance indicator is assigned to one of six levels of complexity known as curriculum planning levels. While DECA’s Competitive Events Program has previously mostly used the curriculum planning levels of prerequisite (PQ), career sustaining (CS) and specialist (SP), DECA’s entrepreneurship events will now use supervisor (SU), manager (MN) and owner (ON). The definitions for the entrepreneurship planning levels are: Supervisor (SU): Content provides the same in-depth, solid understanding and skill development in all business functions as in the specialist curriculum, and in addition, incorporates content that addresses the supervision of people.

JUNE 25-28, 2018 NORTH MIAMI

Manager (MN): Content develops strategic decision-making skills in all business functions needed to manage a business or department within an organization. Owner (ON): Content develops strategic decision-making skills in all aspects of business that are needed to own and operate a business. As members prepare for the Entrepreneurship Exam, be sure to use the 100-question sample exam and key, as well as the exam blueprint, both available at www.deca.org/ competitiveevents.

ACTIVITIES

FOR THE SECOND QUARTER

N

ovember is DECA Month! It’s a great way to truly showcase the engagement opportunities DECA offers its members by participating in DECA’s Chapter Campaigns. The second quarter is also a time when many advisors start helping members get a competitive edge with additional competition preparation. Additionally, November is a great time for focused learning projects with a unique twist, such as Global Entrepreneurship Week and the DECA Idea Challenge. Here are some ideas for using DECA's Comprehensive Learning Program to engage your students in your classroom and extend learning beyond the classroom.

1

ENGAGE YOUR MEMBERS THROUGH DECA’S CHAPTER CAMPAIGNS

DECA's Chapter Campaigns are perfect for developing your chapter’s program of leadership and allow your chapter to gain the recognition it deserves. DECA offers five unique campaigns that will help you grow your chapter and build lasting partnerships within your school and community. The Membership Campaign, Global Entrepreneurship Week Campaign, Promotional Campaign and Community Service Campaign are due December 1. The Advocacy Campaign takes place in February during Career and Technical Education Month and is due March 1, 2018. Use the Chapter Campaign Guidebook as a planning tool. This new resource is tailored for both advisors and members to make your campaigns a success. Throughout the guidebook, you will find two parts for each of the five campaigns: an advisor guide and a student worksheet. Advisors can connect their instruction to the campaign through the classroom connections, and use the list of ideas to give their chapter a jump start. Members now have a worksheet to help brainstorm, hit checkpoints, and understand how to reach the THRIVE level to be eligible to attend the Thrive Academy at DECA’s International Career Development Conference. <deca.org/campaigns

PARTICIPATE IN THE DECA IDEA CHALLENGE! If your chapter will complete the Global Entrepreneurship Week Campaign, then you must participate in the DECA Idea Challenge! A premier event of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), the DECA Idea Challenge is a hands-on learning experience that dares students around the globe to generate an innovative use for a commonplace item in just eight days. Students must organize a team, generate an original use for the challenge item and pitch the invention in a three-minute video presentation. The item to be used in the challenge will remain a mystery until revealed by DECA Inc. on November 12, 2017, at 4:00 PM EST. <deca.org/challenges

2

ENCOURAGE YOUR MEMBERS TO APPLY FOR DECA SCHOLARSHIPS

More than $300,000 is up for grabs for DECA members wishing to continue their education. Encourage your DECA members to engage in this professional development activity that requires them to reflect on their educational achievement, explain their involvement in DECA activities and express their career goals and ambitions. All scholarship applications must be submitted online by January 19, 2018. Applications will be reviewed, and those making the second round of consideration will be asked to mail additional information such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, chapter roster, etc. to DECA. DECA’s corporate partners provide scholarships based on employment, career interest, entrepreneurship and leadership. Deadline: January 19, 2018 <deca.org/scholarships

3

LEARN + SERVE: PERFORM A CHAPTER COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

The holidays are a friendly reminder to consider why we are thankful. Get at the heart of the season by encouraging your DECA members to perform or participate in a community service project. Conduct this as a learning activity in your class where students perform tasks relating to project management, event management, personnel management, public relations and more. Consider using DECA’s Community Service Project as a guide and allow your chapter leaders to turn their learning into an entry for this competitive event. DECA’s partner Lead2Feed provides a series of free lessons that empower students to design and implement a service project. Be sure to check out lead2feed.org for the resources available to your chapter, as well as the opportunity to earn awards and grants. <decadirect.org/chapter-resources/community-service

4

NOMINATE SENIORS FOR THE EMERGING LEADER HONOR AWARD

DECA’s Emerging Leader Honor Award provides recognition of graduating DECA members studying marketing, finance, hospitality and management for being an academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leader through participation in DECA. A certificate will be mailed directly to the local advisor with suggestions for appropriate presentation and recognition. Visit the website below to learn more about the guidelines and application procedure. Deadline: January 30, 2018 <deca.org/high-school-programs/high-school-recognition-awards

5

ENHANCE YOUR COMPETITORS’ PREPAREDNESS

While effective DECA advisors incorporate DECA’s competitive events into classroom instruction, many advisors and members spend time outside of class to polish presentations or to study more in-depth. Here are some resources available to help your members in and out of class. SHOW SAMPLE VIDEOS Want to show your members what to expect in DECA’s Competitive Events Program? Check out sample video presentations available at www.deca.org/competitiveevents. These web resources provide examples complete with the event guidelines for DECA’s Principles of Business Administration Events, Individual Series Events, Chapter Team Events and Marketing Representative Events. While showing these in your class, you may wish to make copies of the evaluation forms and ask your members to evaluate the presentation. A DECA Direct video segment also gives an overview of the competitive events process. DON’T FORGET DECA DIRECT ONLINE There are so many resources at www.decadirect.org/compete to help your DECA members prepare for competition. Whether it’s tips and tricks from fellow competitors, articles to help members pick the right event, or industry resources, they are all waiting! USE THE DECA EXAM BLUEPRINT Download the DECA Exam Blueprint at www.deca.org/competitiveevents that shows the exam items by instructional area for the 2017-2018 exams used at the district level, chartered association level and at the International Career Development Conference.

Schoolbased enterprises and sales projects incorporate key performance indicators from the instructional areas of financial analysis, operations, market planning, product/service management, pricing, human resources management, promotion, selling, distribution/channel management, and marketinginformation management. DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification program provides learning activities for your DECA members to accomplish while earning a level of certification. Participating in this program is a great opportunity to validate learning and show how your school-based enterprise integrates into your curriculum. Opportunities are also available for professional development through the School-based Enterprise Academy at the DECA International Career Development Conference. Deadline: January 12, 2018 <www.deca.org/sbe

If you do not have a school-based enterprise, check out the Diamond Fundraising Model, part of DECA's Elevate Leadership Tools. The Diamond Fundraising Model provides a framework for chapters to identify funding opportunities from four major sources of income—personal selling, events and activities, partnership and local advocacy. <deca.org/elevate

ENGAGE BUSINESS PARTNERS

Asking business professionals to assist your chapter is one of the best decisions you can make. They provide a reality check for your members as classroom speakers, they share insight into the industry and serve as mentors for competitive events projects. <www.deca.org/partners

8

IDEAS FOR BUSINESS PARTNER INVOLVEMENT > Advising members on competitive event projects > Contributing resources, such as survey data, demographic information and more, that are available to their businesses > Reviewing instructional materials for technical accuracy > Providing equipment and facilities for specialized learning > Providing tours, field trip experiences, speakers, judges > Conducting practice job interviews > Obtaining contributions, including scholarship funds > Performing liaison work with the rest of the business community > Publicizing the chapter’s activities in the community

HOST A SOCIAL ACTIVITY

The holiday season is a great opportunity to host a chapter social activity so your members can spend time together. If you don’t have time to arrange a social activity for the entire chapter, try at least to express appreciation to your leadership team through a small thank-you or special treat. IDEAS FOR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES > Host a holiday breakfast for DECA members. Encourage them to share in the holiday spirit by inviting a potential DECA member. > Organize a gift exchange among members at a meeting. > Organize a “secret DECA pal” with a full week of exchanging gifts. > Participate in a “DECA Day” at a college or professional football, basketball or hockey game. > Enter a float or walk in your local holiday parade. > Consider hosting activities like bowling or movie night. > Hold a pizza party to recognize your members’ accomplishments in the first semester.

9

SUBMIT YOUR MEMBERSHIP

Organize your member names and dues so you can submit them on DECA’s online membership system by November 15. Some chartered associations have earlier deadlines for competitor eligibility. Don’t forget to have your professional and alumni members entered by December 1 for eligibility in DECA’s Membership Campaign. <membership.decaregistration.com

BREATHE + GET READY FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER

Use your break as an opportunity to reflect your first semester. Come up for air and step back to see where you stand with your goals for this year. Review your chapter’s program of leadership with your leadership team and members. Consider where you may need to make adjustments in both your program of leadership and teaching. The second semester is full of DECA excitement with the competitive events season coming at full steam.
