The basic entities are: folding camping trailer, fifth wheel trailer, travel trailer, truck camper and motorhome.
A recreation vehicle not exceeding 320 square feet of gross trailer area mounted on wheels and designed to be towed by a motorized vehicle:
Conventional Travel Trailer
Ranges typically from 12 feet to 35 feet in length, and is towed by means of a bumper or frame hitch attached to the towing vehicle.
Fifth-Wheel Travel Trailer

Conventional Motorhome (Type A)
The living unit has been entirely constructed on a bare, specially designed motor vehicle chassis.
Van Camper (Type B)
A panel-type truck to which the RV manufacturer adds any two of the following conveniences: sleeping, kitchen and toilet facilities, also 110 volt hook-up, fresh water storage, city water hook-up and a top extension to provide more head room.

56th Annual
Visiting the California RV Show for the first time are travel writer Brad Herzog, wife Amy and sons, Luke age 7 and Jesse age 6 who are an RVIA Explore America Family. Stop by the Seminar Tent located in the center of the show for their free seminar at 3pm Friday through Sunday on the first weekend of the 56th Annual California RV Show.
The Herzog’s have spent the last nine summers traversing America searching for and writing about virtue in America’s small towns. Since birth, the boys have equated summer with RVing and finding the special places about small towns from Freedom, Maine to Wisdom, Montana.
“Even though we feel like we’ve seen so much of America, when you see it through a child’s eyes, it’s brand-new all over again. You get a different sense of wonder. I can’t imagine traveling with kids going form hotel to hotel, “agree the Herzog’s.
“States of Mind,” is Brad’s memoir of his and Amy’s travels when as a newly wed Chicago couple, they set foot in their new RV for the first time, then spent 10 months traveling through 48 states. They say it was the greatest year of their lives.
Special encounters from nine summers of travels are the stories you’ll enjoy at the Herzog’s seminar, “Joys of Travel in Small Town America.” They will have tips on traveling with a young and growing family and what it is like for a working writer with a life on wheels.
“It’s a cliché, but RVing is the ultimate quality family time. There’s literally a new adventure around every corner. If you’re flying from place to place, you’re going from Point A to Pont B, but you are missing all the good stuff in between. In an RV, you can experience America, rather than just pass through it,” says Brad Herzog.
You will find Brad in the Big White Tent except from 3-4 pm when he is speaking in the seminar tent. Autographed copies of his book, “States of Mind” will be available for purchase. Ask Brad to tell you about their many trips and how they divide up the travel duties. If you push him a little, Brad will even disclose the worst part of every trip.
For more information on the Herzog’s travels, and Brad’s travel and children’s books visit www.BradHerzog.com

Keys To Enjoying Life
See America with family RV camping vacations as your children grow up. Show them the beaches, mountains, deserts, plains and cities that are their heritage. Use your RV as the family’s home base, while you play together. Families of all ages enjoy the safety and comforts of RV traveling. Set your own schedule and avoid airport hassles.
Close-to-home activities are easier and more fun with the convenience of an RV. Take the van or motorhome to tailgate parties, the lake for a day trip, a leisurely weekend at a nearby festival. Having all the comforts and safety of your own kitchen, bathroom and a place to take breaks adds to the activity’s enjoyment.
Extended travel to Mexico, Alaska or a “See America” circle tour can take a month or more. It’s great to sleep in your own bed every night or be able to prepare meals just the way you like them. Extended trips, while maintaining a home base, can be a trial run for partial-year or full timing.
Full time RV’ers are often enjoying the golden years of retirement. They travel around the country sightseeing, visiting and making friends or following the warm weather. The wheels may stop rolling for a while when they find just the right spot.
RV clubs that camp once a month help many families get away from demanding careers to enjoy a relaxing weekend. Many RV clubs participate in activities such as square dancing, off-roading, cards, antiquing, hiking, nature observations

Travel Destination Information
Recreational-vehicle owners planning to travel can ensure their vacations are comfortable and safe by preparing their vehicles before they leave home, says the Automobile Club of Southern California.
The Auto Club and El Monte RV, one of America’s largest RV rental and sales companies, offer these recommendations for RV maintenance:
Inspect antifreeze-coolant level, making certain the mixture of water and coolant meets specifications in the vehicle’s owner manual. Check also that coolant is flushed and changed at proper intervals.
Inspect and replace worn or cracked belts, as well as hoses that are worn, cracked, blistered, brittle or too soft.
Check tires for uneven or excessive tread wear and make sure all tires, including the spare, are inflated properly. Inflate tires to recommended pressure.
Check the level and condition of engine oil. When driving under extreme conditions such as 90 degree to 100-plus degree temperatures or twoing a heavy trailer, switch to a heavier motor oil. Check the owner’s manual “severe driving conditions” section for oil and change interval recommendations.
Check owner’s manual for the change interval of all other fluids, and service as recommended.
Since battery life is shortened by high temperatures, test batteries and replace if necessary. Check and clean battery cable connections.
In addition to performing general maintenance similar to that of autos, RV owners should also:
Check the vehicle’s exterior, including windows and roof seals, for cracks and deterioration.
Inspect and service the furnace, water heater, refrigerator and roof air conditioner. Make sure all openings are clear of debris.
Check the liquid propane pressure to ensure it meets the vehicle’s owner manual recommendation.
Sanitize the holding tanks.
Check all doors and compartments for water damage or deterioration. Open vents and windows to ventilate interior.
Make sure fire extinguisher is fully charged and securely mounted.
Check all interior and exterior lights.

FUEL PRICES AND THE RV INDUSTRY
RV TRAVEL
In times of high fuel prices, RVers spend more time enjoying the campground experience and less on the road. With over 16,000 campgrounds nationwide, RVers have the flexibility to cut costs by staying closer to home. Whether they travel five miles or 500, their outdoor experience can be the same.
The RV camping experience, whether for a weekend or a week or more, is a low-cost way to spend high-quality time with loved ones. Even with today’s high fuel prices, RV travel is a great value. Summer 2008 vacation cost comparison research shows that RV trips remain the most affordable way for a family to travel because of the significant savings on hotels and restaurant costs. Fuel price hikes increase the cost of all modes of travel and transportation.
Outdoor recreation and vacations offer physical and mental health benefits that are considered essential by experts, and are treated as priorities in their lives by an ever increasing number of Americans. RVs are a springboard to all types of recreation and travel opportunities
