SAtUrDAY, OctOber 23 10:00 Am - NOON GAte c StAGe DAN rOSeNbUrG
Broadcasting the Car News Show live 8-10 am on KFWB 980 AM.
Being a third generation “car guy,” Dan Rosenberg was destined to have a lifelong passion for cars. His grandfather owned a used auto parts company as well as a car lot in a suburb of Pittsburgh back in the 1930’s. His father worked at the used auto parts company as a high school student, until he went out on his own selling new parts when he founded “Leonard’s Auto Supply” in 1962.
About 30 years later, while on an airplane heading to Los Angeles to “make it” as a comedian, Dan read an article about Billy Ray Cyrus working as a car salesman during the day while performing at night, so he thought, “If he can do it, why can’t I?” So he walked into a Pontiac/Buick dealer in Woodland Hills and got a job selling cars. (Turns out, it was right next door to the dealership Cyrus used to work for.) More than 15 years later, Rosenberg has held almost every sales and management position at dealerships in California as well as his home state of Pennsylvania. Mixing his comedy skills with his selling skills, he was always a top salesman at each dealership he worked for.
Dan currently consults with car dealers on how to increase their sales volume and is also consulting the website “CashForCars.com” matching car sellers with car buyers. As a comedian, Dan has performed across North America and is a regular at the Laugh Factory and Improv comedy clubs in Hollywood.
He has written two comedy books: “The Book on Hosting” and “The Unwritten Rules of Stand-up Comedy.” After helping friends and relatives buy cars, he has developed a system that always saves time and money and is working on his third book “The Book On Buying Cars” which will reveal his secrets.
When asked his favorite three things, Dan always replies “Cars, Comedy and Radio,” and Car News combines all of his passions. Rosenberg resides in Santa Monica with his wife and 4 year old son. Dan has owned 24 cars (one at a time)

Dennis Hill - Daily Seminar 2:00 PM
A LOOK BACK IN TIME
By Penny NicolaiVisiting Alaska is a once in a lifetime dream trip for many RVers. But getting ready for an 8-10,000 mile, 4 to 8 week trip takes a different level of preparation than a week’s vacation trip to a nearby destination.
Carol and Dennis Hill have been RVing for over 40 years and full-timing for a decade. They’ve driven to Alaska three times with a 5th wheel trailer, and older RV and a new RV. They’ve made the trip at a leisurely pace with a bigger budget and also done a speedier, more budget-oriented excursion. They are still happily married!
This seminar relieves Alaska trip planning anxiety by answering some basic questions on the minds of most first timers taking a very long trip through remote areas. Dennis will cover trip preparation, borders and customs, routes and construction, fuel cost and mileage, places to stay and RV care during the trip. His handy tips are practical and easy to understand. He’ll let you know the “must do’s” before you go and what’s optional.
Bring your Alaska travel questions!
The roots of RV travel can actually be traced back to the early days of American history when pioneers took covered wagons and traversed the country in search of new places to live. As the country grew, peddlers and touring groups used horse-pulled wooden wagons, similar to those used by the gypsies in Europe, to travel from town to town showcasing their wares. Providing shelter, a sleeping place, room to carry cooking utensils, provisions and other necessities, these small wagons were the forerunners to the RV.
As technology became more advanced, people began camping in private rail cars that were pulled to sidings along train routes.
While the roots of RVing dates back to long ago, 1910 is the year that America’s leading RV historians David Woodworth, Al Hesselbart and Roger White cite as the beginning of what has become the modern RV industry.
The first motorized campers were built in 1910,” explains Woodworth, a preeminent collector of early RVs and RV camping memorabilia. The year 1910 brought a new freedom. RVs allowed people to go where they wanted, when they wanted.”
Hesselbart, archivist for the RV/MH Heritage Museum in Elkhart, Ind., also pinpoints 1910 as the birth of the RV industry. “Camping has been around for centuries, but 1910 is when the first auto-related camping vehicles were built for commercial sale.”
“There were one-offs [individual units] built prior to 1910,” says White, an associate curator for the Smithsonian Institution. “But 1910 is a good benchmark for the industry.” These first RVs or “auto-campers” or “Camping trailers” as they were called, offered minimal comforts compared to the RVs of today. They provided a place to sleep and cook meals. The only thing that was missing in most models was a bathroom. But most importantly, they provided people with freedom.
One of the first models to be introduced was a version of today’s Type B van camper, the Pierce Arrow “Touring Landau”. Built to order, this Camper came with tooled leather upholstery, a water tank, toilet and a washbasin built into the back of the front seat. There was a rear boot for trunks, a roof rack and storage boxes along the sides where normally there would have been running boards. The basic price was $8,250. Pierce-Arrow’s President, George K. Birge, had one with a specially designed interior, including a rear seat/bed conversion and hot and cold running water. An owner from San Francisco substituted an icebox for the washbasin, while others had fitted Thermos flasks and compartments for cutlery and crockery. Breakfast cereal tycoon, Charles William Post, and his wife are reported to have travelled extensively in their specially equipped Touring Landau which also had H & C on tap, a food storage compartment, hampers, toilet, four trunks on the back plus two more on top. Camping trailers made by Los Angeles Trailer Works and Auto-Kamp Trailers also rolled off the assembly line beginning in 1910.
In 1931 Chevrolet introduced the HouseCar, an early motorhome that was used by actress Mae West. Nothing like the RVs used by today’s celebrities, Mae West’s HouseCar had an impressive array of features for its time, including sleeping accommodations for four adults, a twoburner stove, dining room, pantry, bathroom, kitchen sink and a back porch.
Out of all the manufactures making RVs in those days, the famous Airstream is the oldest recreational vehicle company still in business today and the only RV manufacturer to survive the Great Depression.
The depression that started in 1929 was a setback for the growing RV industry, but soon it became an opportunity. People who had lost their houses in the Depression turned to mobile homes and helped create a boom in the trailer business. At the time, there was little differentiation between trailers that were used as family homes and those that were intended for camping trips.
In 1936, the New York Times estimated there were 100,000 trailers on the road. “A new industry is rapidly coming to the front,” the paper said.
Today, RVs are state of the art with every possible amenity available. The long history of RVing demonstrates its continuing appeal. RVing continues to thrive and grow because it provides a freedom that cannot be found elsewhere.

DAVID WOODWORTH – RENOWNED RV HISTORIAN
— By Penny Nicolai —David Woodworth is one of the best known RV historians in America today. A former California youth pastor, Woodworth’s first experience with RVs was when he traveled as a young boy across country with his parents in an old Detroiter travel trailer.
However, it wasn’t until he went RV camping with his own children that he was smitten with the lifestyle, that he began collecting RVs and other RV memorabilia. “We had a Model A Ford pulling an old Zagelmeyer tent trailer,” explains Woodworth, who now operates the Tin Lizzie Inn, a small Victorian bed and breakfast inn in Fish Camp, Calif. Located just two miles from Yosemite National Park, guests also get the chance to ride in Model T Ford or even drive one. “It was such a great way to build memories. The Model A and the Zagelmeyer caught people’s eye and they started telling me about some of the old RVs. It peaked my interest. I’ve always liked history and old things. In fact, if it is old and rusty, I’m interested.”
He began collecting antique RVs. And since there wasn’t any great interest in them, people were quite happy to find a home for their old RV that was just taking up space.
Collecting RVs from 1914 to 1937, Woodworth wanted to open a museum to showcase his collection. His dream was to be able to feature each RV in an authentic setting complete with props. Unfortunately, it was a project that required a large amount of capital and he was unable to secure the funding.
Realizing that it was not possible, Woodworth arranged with the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana to acquire 30 of the 50 RVs he had collected and restored. He still has 20 which he displays in various museums around the country and goes on tour throughout the United States.
“I also have an extensive library, hundreds of photographs and memorabilia in my collection,” he continues. “One of my favorites is my 1931 Model A Roadster pulling a 1931 Travel Trailer which I am showing at the opening weekend of the California RV Show.”
An extremely warm individual, Woodworth likes talking to people and explaining much of the history of the early days of RV travel. Be sure and stop by and see him. You will learn an incredible amount from this renowned historian.

Trailers Unlimited FronT STacker Trailer
This enclosed trailer is designed to haul all your toys! First, load your 2 quads on the rear loft, then load your Rhino or golf cart on the lift, raise the hydraulic lift with a simple push of a button and drive in one more quad and an off-road car. So many toys and your trailer is still short enough to tow behind a 40’ motorhome.
The dual axle electric over hydraulic disc brakes make stopping quick and safe while traveling. Front and rear hydraulic leveling jacks make stabilizing the trailer easy no matter what terrain you decide to camp on. No need to worry about all of the dirt and mud you find while exploring with your toys - the spray-on bed liner floor makes clean up easy.
The trailer is also equipped with a 50 gallon fuel tank and high volume pump for re-fueling all of your toys, ensuring the maximum amount of play.
The 91gallon water tank has an automatic pump for cleaning the toys before you head home and/or resupplying the motorhome’s water tank on dry camping trips.
An enclosed trailer comes in handy providing a place to work on toys or a place to eat with a large group when the weather isn’t suitable for eating outside. It’s great for keeping all the toys safely locked up, both on your trip and at home.

Our family settled in for the night at our favorite campsite near Lake Frederick, Virginia. During the night, it began raining. Mingled with the sound of rain, my daughter was certain she heard a cat meowing. I opened the door of our RV, peered out and saw two drenched, frightened kittens. We brought them in and dried them off. The rest of the week we searched for the mother, but to no avail. No surprise, we now have two new pets, and my daughter returned to school with a wonderful story to share about our family’s adventure in our RV!
by Lynne French - Orlando, FLYOu’Re NeVeR TOO OLD
I remember one weekend in New Hampshire when my spry, 60 year old grandmother organized a pickup, softball game for the families staying at the campground. That night everyone came back to our campsite to roast marshmallows. When my grandmother emerged from the trailer without her teeth and wig one of the kids who had played ball with my grandmother earlier that day shouted across the fire, “I didn’t know you brought your greatgrandmother camping with you too!”
Our club was camping far off the beaten path in the desert wilderness.
Suddenly a whirling sound came from overhead. As it circled lower, we saw it was a military helicopter and we all waved.
It circled again and landed by our rigs. The pilots showed the craft to us and let the kids look inside. We fed them homemade ice cream.
Next day, the helicopter was again circling. As it got lower, they waved and dropped a cactus with a thank you note.

Anyone can camp. It is not how old you are, it is how old you act.
