EDITORIAL

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Community newspapers are vital in today’s society. Getting a brief in the paper about an upcoming event or fundraiser is a critical part of success. Having a journalist/photographer cover an event is a way to ensure the group’s visibility, to let people know what your group is doing and why. And using the letters to the editor section to thank those who attended, sponsored and contributed to the event is a way to make sure they’ll come back and participate next time. Although there is no meaningful media competition for local newspapers, the challenge is from Facebook and other social media sites. You may have heard that newspapers are dead, but that’s not the case, at least not locally. We face a challenge in how to change the business model so it will make economic sense so the paper will be sustainable. The good news is our online subscribers are increasing weekly, and we've doubled our print circulation. We’re counting on you, our readers, to keep reading The Hobsonville Flyer, either in print, which will continue to expand or online, which isn't going away anytime soon. Thank you for your ongoing support and enjoy our June issue. If you have a product or service that would benefit our community, contact us to see what options we can offer you in both print and online. We also have custom packages to help you grow your business on your website and social media platforms! OPINIONS

Meetings I recently attended the meeting organised by the Residents Association of Hobsonville so homeowners could have a chance to listen to updates and discuss any problems etc. This was followed by a lovely afternoon tea so that residents could mingle socially and meet the association members. The people who attended seem to have a good time.

Regards, Liz Patel If you want to see your opinion piece here send us an email at thehobsonvilleflyer@gmail.com

The Hobsonville Flyer would like to thank the following establishments for stocking the paper every month: • Coffee Club Hobsonville • Hobsonville Point Pharmacy • Hobs Point Convenience • Whenuapai Milk Bar • Harcourts Cooper & Co Hobsonville • 160 Hobsonville Point Cafe • Crusty’s

However, there was a noticeable absence of Asian residents. As they obviously f o r m a l a rg e p e r c e n t a g e o f t h e homeowners here and what goes on in the area affects them as well, eg parking, I think it is important that they show more interest and make an effort to attend similar events. Perhaps even become a member of the committee.

WARM AND DRY STORAGE IN YOUR OWN GARAGE

LOCAL BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP – BNI

If you’re lucky enough to have a garage with internal access there is nothing better than driving in or out of your garage without getting your feet wet. You can only take advantage of this if your garage is clear enough to get your car inside. If storage is a problem and you need space to put all that stuff, take a look at Stealing Spaces ceiling storage racks. They clear the floor and put everything up near the ceiling where it is warm and dry. We’re delivering and installing locally – take a look at www.stealingspaces.co.nz.

In Hobsonville Point there appears to be a large number of self-employed people, many operating small businesses within the local area.Business networking groups provide support to small businesses. They suit those people that want to grow their business and understand the value of getting referrals. BNI is a structured weekly networking breakfast which focuses on learning and with a collaborative approach we actively support each other’s businesses. The group meets each week, and this helps members get to know each other well which naturally creates a large ‘sales team’ of people that promote your business. The local group meets each Thursday morning from 7.00am to 8.30am at The Brigham Restaurant & Café.

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH GREG TORCHIA I can remember it was almost three years to the day my wife Roxanne asked me how would you like to live in New Zealand, I said hmmm sure and here we are in Hobsonville Point. I’ve spent the last 20 plus years of my life as a Police Officer in the United States. I’ve had the opportunity in my career to work in many different capacities from the patrol division to a community resource officer into the investigative unit which I thoroughly enjoyed.

SWIMMING LESSONS FOR LIFE The drowning statistics in New Zealand are rather frightening with 104 drownings in 2017 and 88 of these being preventable. We live in a country surrounded by water – whether it’s the ocean, our stunning rivers and lakes or the multitude of pools at residential homes – and it is integral that both ourselves and our children are capable and confident in their swimming abilities. At Hilton Brown Swimming Hobsonville, we offer lessons to babies, pre-schoolers, school age children and adults. Please pop in and say hi at 5 Rawiri Place, Hobsonville or check us out on www.hiltonbrownswimming.co.nz. We have a variety of lessons across different days and times.

This journey to New Zealand has been something I will never forget with my wife making the trip over first by herself, my daughter followed about a year later and then I arrived shortly thereafter. My wife often spoke about residing in Hobsonville Point and referenced the Market and Catalina Bay which is kind of ironic considering after 4 moves we are happy to say we have found a place to call home here for a little while anyway. When I’m not out chasing the light or the stars with my passion, photography you can find

me at the Catalina Bay Farmers Market where I’ve recently taken on the roll as the Market Manager. I couldn’t be happier there it has a family like atmosphere and closeness to home which seemed to be the perfect fit for my lifestyle. On most days off I try to sneak in a bit of travel definitely a workout or two but most of all I’m enjoying my time

with my family in New Zealand.

COMMUNITY CHATTER KIWI COFFEE MASTER WILL COMPETE AGAINST WORLD’S BEST A F T E R W I N N I N G N Z B A R I S TA CHAMPS One of New Zealand’s best baristas is on her way to the Gold Coast to take on other coffee experts from around the globe. Chrystal Rameka (from The Coffee Club Hobson Centre) was crowned the champion of The Coffee Club New Zealand B a r i s t a Championships 2018 on 27 May, beating five other contestants to take the title. The competition took place at The C o ff e e C l u b ’s packed Lunn Ave cafe. The baristas were challenged to make six coffees in eight minutes, under the scrutiny of five judges who evaluated everything from the preparation of the workspace to the taste of the finished coffees. For Chrystal, from The Coffee Club Hobson Centre, this was her second appearance at the championships. She credits the experience of taking part in the 2017 championships for her win. “I learned a lot at last year’s competition – I realized afterwards that I had spent too much time cleaning. This year I tried to build on last year, ironed out some of those mistakes and practiced a lot to be ready.”

5 | THE HOBSONVILLE FLYER | 2018

Asked for the key to her success, she responded, “I just make sure that everything is super clean, the group heads, everything. I also make sure to ask my customers for feedback. I want to learn from every cup of coffee that I make, so I can get better and better, and provide our customers with exactly what they want.” Five judges oversaw the competition in which the contestants had to make two short lattes, two espressos, one flat white and one cappuccino. Under one head judge, two judges oversaw the technical evaluation, c h e c k i n g 2 0 d i ff e r e n t criteria in the preparation and making of the coffees. Two judges oversaw the sensory evaluation, assessing everything from the appearance to the taste of the coffees. “Temperature is a big thing for me,” said judge Amanda Pike from Fonterra. “You are looking for the consistency of the milk, but also that the heat is right and not too much.” Chrystal now gets to travel to the Gold Coast in October to take on baristas from the rest of the world. Chrystal will compete with other national champions from The Coffee Club as they vie to be crowned International Champion.

THE CHOIR THAT CAN HELP EVERYBODY SING. On Thursday 26 June an exciting new community initiative came to Hobsonville point. The Choir Ltd, which has branches in Stonefields, Newmarket, Mt Eden and Howick is setting up their newest branch right here. What makes these choirs so special is that they are made up of local residents who can sing - or want to sing but haven’t had the confidence to do so in the past. Musical Director Kate Bell truly believes everybody can sing. She says “It’s like learning to drive, you just need to practise. We believe everyone has a voice, and once people get started we can give them some skills so that they sound even better...and then there's no stopping them!” The Choir tries to make it as easy as possible for people to join in. They have a"no auditions" policy and a setlist that includes something for everyone. Melonie Roberts, membership director and co-founder says “All kinds of people join our choirs. They enjoy the sense of community and confidence they build over time. And when you hear it, the choir sounds so good that initially, people think it’s only for good singers, but they soon realise it’s a place for everybody to sing.” The Choir Hobsonville Point will meet every Thursday 7.15-9.15pm at Hobsonville Point School. Prevention Myths of cramping Muscle stretching which is done slowly is the most common and effective therapy for relieving acute muscle cramps. Within the muscles, receptors are inhibited to stop cramp.

Muscle cramping is said to be linked to low electrolytes after exercise, dehydration or exposure to extreme weather conditions (hot and humid environments) but these 'theory's' have never been proven.

TRAVEL WITH BUZZ - MIKE THOMSON

Today’s cruise ships access some really unique places. These five exceptional destinations all offer an extraordinary cruising experience 1. ALASKA: Once-in-a-lifetime
Alaska is a beautiful adventure. Wild and untamed, get within metres of enormous blue glaciers and equally huge whales, all viewable from your window. The active-inclined can try anything from dog sledding to bear-viewing, as well as fishing and kayaking, and return for dinners of sublime Alaskan seafood. Several cruise lines access the USA state between the summer months of mid-May to mid-September, with most cruises departing almost exclusively from San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, making it easy to combine a few additional weeks exploring the US.
 2. SOUTH PACIFIC: Utopia on your doorstep
If you’ve never drank Kava with a Fijian village Chief, or snorkelled in waters brimming with exotic fish, tick off all the island must-dos with a South Pacific cruise. We are fortunate to have some of the world’s most lusted-after destinations in our backyard, and luckily for us finding paradise couldn’t be easier. Discover multiple desert islands with a Pacific Island cruise. 3. ASIA: An immense terrain made easy
Is there anywhere more diverse than Asia? Cruises offer just as much choice as this continent offers cultural variety. Over 30 cruise lines visit 200 ports across 17 Asian countries, with vessels ranging from mega ships to small river boats carrying just 36 passengers. You can choose to sail with a huge crowd or very few. Cruises are also easy for the first-time Asia visitor, removing

all the intimidation of foreign terrain, your ship provides a safe and familiar haven to return to. 4. AUSTRALIA: Fuss-free exploration
Because Australia is so vast, it might feel daunting to tackle it by road, or too fussy to navigate by flights. The simple answer is to cruise. Australia encapsulates so many diverse regions all in the one country, so whether you want fine dining in South Australia, or to knock off every key city in one fell swoop, cruising’s your answer. Some ships offer itineraries visiting unheard-of ports, whereas others forge a route through the populous Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef. By cruising, you can effortlessly cover a lot of “ground.”

5. EUROPE: Rich in destinations whatever your time frame
The Mediterranean has always attracted cruise-goers. Sun-soaked and defined by the Mediterranean diet, days are spent exploring achingly beautiful coastal towns and picking at antipasto. The Baltics have also become popular, notably for history and preserved medieval townships. Distances between ports are short so multiple explorations can be packed into a very small amount of time. Better yet, the summer’s so-called 'white nights' mean the evenings stay light well into the night. Perfect for longer sightseeing, as well as glorious alfresco dining - glasses clinking into the wee hours.
If you’d love to plan and book your next big adventure please contact us at Hobsonville House of Travel, Corner of Hobsonville Point Road and De Havilland, 09 416 0700 , Hobsonville@hot.co.nz

From getting the right coffee beans to the careful marketing strategy, one cannot just open one up and expect it to be as successful as Starbucks. Kawhe on Point is one very different coffee shop. It is a lovely project set up by a team of students from our local Hobsonville Point Secondary School. With the help of their teachers and local businesses, starting from the planning, the young people learned how to set up a business, how to brew one smashing coffee, and how to market it. It is very exciting to know they are taking the initiatives. Having heard about it through the grapevine, I could not help but went to have a look. I arrived shortly before lunchtime. As most students were still in their learning common, the coffee shop by the school reception was relatively quiet. I was welcomed with some friendly smiles and warm greetings. After ordering my coffee and handing over my cup, I watched them prepare the coffee with an air of familiarity. I did not have to wait too long. Within a few minutes, a hot, warm beverage was back into my hand. Crisp, sweetly pungent aroma. A very full body and an impressive range and dimension. The finish is rich and deep-toned. I was impressed with the first sip and quite envious of the staff and students at the school who can have such a place so close to ease their coffee craving. The place is opened to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 7.30 am to 8.30 am and Wednesday from 8.00 am to 12.30 pm. Maybe I should get up a little early.
