Alligators are a common sight throughout DeBordieu Colony. Many of us enjoy viewing and photographing them from a safe distance. Now that the warm weather has arrived, alligators are more active and visible. They have resumed feeding after the cold winter months and can be seen sunning on the banks of any of our ponds.
Alligators are an important part of our ecosystem. Young alligators provide food for birds and other mammals; larger alligators help control snake populations and other fish and wildlife. Gator holes also provide habitat for many species of animals as well. Their presence is an indicator of the health of many of our ponds and is part of the natural habitat that many DeBordieu members love and respect.
While it may be entertaining to some to feed alligators, it is a death sentence for the alligators. (“A fed alligator is a dead alligator.”) When an alligator is fed it loses its inherent fear of people. SCDNR issues a limited number of “nuisance” tags to the DCCA for the removal of alligators. Alligators cannot be relocated so removing them requires them to be destroyed. Normally, SCDNR will only issue tags for alligators over 6 feet, which display signs of aggression.
• Do not feed, poke or throw rocks at alligators.
• Do not throw fish scraps, chicken necks or bait into ponds when fishing or crabbing.
• Keep children, dogs, cats and other pets out of ponds and away from pond edges.
• Maintain a distance of 60 feet from alligators. They are very fast!
• Do not attempt to pick up or handle an alligator; even a small one for any reason.
• Remember a fed alligator is a dead alligator!
A friendly reminder… Beach Preservation assessments are due by June 30

The DeBordieu-Prince George-Hobcaw SCUTE turtle season started a day earlier than the official start of turtle season (May 1) when South Carolina’s first nest of the season was laid on the Garden City Beach on April 29. Two weeks later we had our first nest of the season on Hobcaw! The season is promising to be a fairly busy one. Fingers crossed! Please do your part to make our beaches “turtle friendly” by picking up all of your trash when you leave the beach, knocking down sand castles, and filling all beach holes. Large beach holes have become way too frequent and these can be quite dangerous, not only to turtles and hatchlings, but to humans and emergency vehicles. Don’t forget, turn out beachside lights by 10 PM.
Turtle Tidbit: Sea turtles do not have X and Y chromosomes. The sex of a hatchling is determined by the temperature experienced during incubation. Warm eggs produce females and cool eggs produce males.
This year we retired the SCUTE website. You can now follow DeBordieu-Prince George-Hobcaw SCUTE activities on our FaceBook page.
