From the artist’s statement My creativity is inspired by the French Salon painters & how they captured history, social conscience & architecture. Using acrylic paint, my work blends the concepts behind French Impressionism & Color Field painting, using gentle distortions of linear perspective to convey an abstracted & subjective feel to the Contemporary American landscape.

From the artist’s statement As a painter & photographer, I prefer to create work that reflects the natural world. Recognizing a cloud delicately framing the facade of a building or the vibrant color of wild berries against a background of neutral tones gives us a broader view of our world & offers an appreciation for simple unexpected beauty.

From the artist’s statement Biomorphic, organic forms -- the result of research on the interior workings of the human body, plants & ocean life on macro & microscopic levels -- create the initial cognitive drive for the work. Balancing a tension through visual relationships of form & color, my paintings & drawings are the product of a natural, self-organizing principle that operates intuitively.

From the artist’s statement Artfully placing shapes of colors on a canvas with focused attention to lights and darks, and warm colors next to cool and creating sharp and soft edges, allows me to tell a story with great pleasure. This process, at times a struggle, but more often a series of actions, proves to me again and again this thing called “painting” is a most precious blessing. There is beauty in everything, every object, and all people, and it is my passion to paint with an abundance of colors, allowing the one who sees the work to experience this joy.

From the artist’s statement My work consists of constructions of bits of metal or wood combined with paint & arranged & fit together. I am drawn to an object because of its texture, color or surface. I think about how it got to be in the place that I found it; the circumstance in which it arrived at its location & its condition; how it is continually being shaped by each passing car or change of weather is curious.

From the artist’s statement In my paintings, I continue my work with the man & trees. The setting has changed, & the landscape has moved indoors. The background is often a stage set with trees as props & the frequent appearance of the aluminum chair. The moon is suspended from a string; sometimes there is a bird. The often lone figure waits for his cue. The director is in the wings.

From the artist’s statement I put equal importance on the viewer’s interpretation of the art as I do my own, rarely being specific as to its meaning. The mystery is part of the appeal; it helps the viewer bring their own life to the art. I work in a variety of media to create multiple layers & textures in my work, & I am captured by the freedom of creating abstracts with a bit of whimsy thrown in.

From the artist’s statement I am primarily a printmaker, exploring new & old ways of making prints and inspired by nature, other artists’ work & old photographs. Since returning to Columbia 5 years ago after teaching art in public & private schools for 20 years, I have been taking classes at USC, learning new, creative techniques and working on the small press I was able to buy for my studio. While teaching, I did many commissioned portraits, so faces often find their way into my prints.

My paintings are usually colorful & have a sense of humor. I usually start a painting of something, & then it ends up being completely different. I don’t know if this is good or bad, but it makes for lots of layers showing through in the end. I normally paint on panels, unstretched canvas & paper.

My images evolve from the process of staining a surface with a mottled tone in which suggestions of form and space are discerned. Inevitably, the forms revealed are figures, owing to a prejudice on my part. The figures (are) less representational and more reflective of psychological and emotional states. My concerns are largely with formal elements – movement, balance, color and tonal harmony (or dissonance), texture, etc.

From the artist’s statement I paint because I love the process of painting. To me, it’s exciting to throw a lot of paint on a clean canvas and then seek to solve the problem of creating order out of chaos. I like that with non-objective work, nothing is decided for you--no color, no design, no subject matter; the search is wide open.

From the artist’s statement I strive to make my paintings look as realistic as the objects I use for my inspiration. When I paint, I lose myself & enjoy a sense of tranquility. Time disappears & there is nothing but myself & my painting. I choose things that I love for my paintings, including special objects for my still life arrangements, inspirational vistas, people, & animals. Oils are my medium of choice. The colors stay true & allow me preserve the things I love on canvas.

I think it’s time I became someone else 2010, Mixed Media on Paper, 11” x 15”

A classical realist, I seek beauty in all things & paint to help people see & appreciate that beauty. Trained in Old Master techniques in Florence, Italy, I work primarily in oils, specializing in portrait, figurative & still life paintings. The human spirit & the natural world inspire my art. I view outward appearances--faces, posture, expression, texture, lights, darks, color--as reflections of the inner spirit & strive in my paintings to reflect the essence of the person or object that makes it unique.

From the artist’s statement I am a Mockingbird. I sing many different songs when it comes to visual expression. I work in watercolor, mixed media & photography. My long career in graphic design informs my work with the use of type & handwriting. Sometimes, my mixed media takes the form of a handmade book. I am intrigued with finding the inherent beauty in the ordinary & the mundane. I utilize found objects--natural or man-made--such as leaves, mica, and old bottle caps because I like their textures & vibrations.

From the artist’s statement I have been painting for 25 years. My medium is not always canvas; I am challenged by painting unusual art on usual spaces/things or vice versa. I have usually painted custom pieces, murals, furniture, both for children and adults. My work has been at Devine Foods, a mural outside Brantley Manor, and doing stage sets for the Columbia Classical Ballet at Koger Center.

From the artist’s statement Bold color is the soul of my art. I paint landscapes & gardens using dramatic colors, often on a red background. Working on location allows me to capture the feel & shapes of the place, but I apply personal color choices, using pairs of complements for visual vibration & leaving bits of the red showing through areas of cool blues & greens. In the studio, I use outdoor paintings & photos as reference for larger pieces, experimenting with acrylic paints & mediums while retaining an emotional connection to the landscape.

From the artist’s statement These paintings are about discovery, waiting for the canvas to reveal itself in due time. They are raw, unbridled emotion expressed on recycled, bullet-stricken boards. Adding another dimension to the work, they are illuminated from within. The element of light heightens the emotional impact on the viewer. Simultaneously, the bullet holes reveal a new textural quality to the surface demonstrating that when human emotion appears, the most irrational there is underlying truth.

From the artist’s statement For the last several years I’ve made paintings and prints based on places that I find deeply engaging and mysterious: Edisto Island and the Congaree Swamp. There is a sense of fragility to these landscapes that comes both from the play of natural forces and the threatened encroachment of human “development.” During regular walks and paddling trips into these areas, I make source materials--sketches and photographs--that respond to the light, atmosphere, weather and passage of time.

Teaching others to paint is also a favorite pursuit. I am dedicated to sharing the pleasure of making art. I have a successful history teaching art to all age groups. Getting “out of the box” has brought me to broader strokes and greater schemes. I read somewhere that the language of art is image. In order to speak this language, we must learn to live with it comfortably, knowing that it is inevitably influenced by emotions. So an artist’s language is sometimes sensual, sometimes bold, sometimes spiritual, always the result of felt experiences.

From the artist’s statement It was a hot summer day and my babysitter, Mrs. Sarah Ayers, took me down a cool path by the river. As we sat by the river watching for the bob to move Mrs. Ayers said to me, “A human being can make something from nothing. As a human being we are charged with creation, so create.” She carefully places a small turtle she made from clay into my hand and asks me to make one just like it. She hands me a small clump of clay, and my life as an artist began.

From the artist’s statement I am currently working on two series of sculptures,“Animals within Nature” (animals are characters in a narrative of ancient mythology, fairy tales or dreams) and “Food as Symbols” (food is more then just to be consumed; it can hold meaning--I research the historical, cultural or emotional connection of food). These sculptures are larger then life to enhance their abstract and surreal nature. Art, for me, is more then the making of objects; it is the searching and learning that holds my interest.

My mother once told me “Sometimes she felt like she didn’t have no life.” That statement made with so much honesty, conviction, & passion--yet free of even a hint of self-pity--has, throughout my career, been one of my guiding principles. She survived & passed her legacy of love, compassion, hope & a sense of “doing the right thing” on to her children. My work finds its foundation in that legacy. It refers to the trials of youth & the struggle of the aged. It seeks to speak to & for those with no voice. My work is compassion, hope, justice, & perseverance: things I learned from my mother.

From the artist’s statement I usually begin with acrylic paints as a ground for oil painting. The first colors, shapes, & textures set the tone & inspire the next step in color or gesture, like a conversation. Color, energy, & emotion are the result. My work is purely intuitive & each painting has a different starting point, reflecting a state of emotion. The watching eye (of God? Of angel? Of inner wisdom?) is a frequent, always unintentional symbol. As for many artists, the process of creation for me is spiritual.
