A message from the Headteacher ... I write after a wonderful and action-packed month at school: so many events and activities going on at Deben! I will start with the “Suffolk Skillz” events that took place in October for Year 7, 9 and 10 at BT HQ at Martlesham. I had the pleasure of attending part of the event with those Year 7 students who attended from Deben and many local Ipswich schools. It was a fantastic opportunity to work with a huge range of local employers to look at skills for life. We also had the privilege of seeing new technology – such as 3D television – in action! After the event, I received an email from Andrew McVicar from Innovate Design who said this of our students: “Last week I had the pleasure of chaperoning some of your school’s Year 7, 9 & 10 pupils round the Suffolk Skillz event at Adastral Park. I’d like to commend their behaviour during the course of the event. They all actively participated and seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully they learned some useful skills from the event and will put them to use during their day to day activities. I was especially impressed with the Year 7 pupils who were extremely eager and came up with some very good questions and answers during the course of the day they attended, as well as winning a couple of prizes!” Well done to all those students who attended this event! I recently had the pleasure of working with several members of staff to secretly nominate my PA and school Office Manager (Mrs Cumberland) for the SecEd Headteacher’s PA of the year award. As you will no doubt have seen from the newspaper coverage, Mrs Cumberland reached the final and was invited to a presentation day in London to receive her certificate, which will be proudly displayed in the foyer.

It was a wonderful day and I would like to thank all those at SecEd for making every PA/Office Manager at the final feel so special for the work they do to support Headteachers. I am so pleased that support staff, as well as teaching staff, are now being rewarded for the incredible work that they do in schools across the country. I can say without reservation that I am extremely proud of the work our support staff do here at Deben to support teachers, students and parents/ carers. Thank you to you all! Exciting news! Students in all year groups have once again been involved in the process of applying and being interviewed for positions on our Student Senior Leadership Team for the year.
You may remember last year that these students were able to take part in the ‘Run the School for a Day’ project, which will happen once again on the 18th January. Leading up to the day, students will shadow members of the SLT and attend SLT and staff meetings to help them to formulate a proposal for an area of the school they want to research. During the day, the students will be involved in the running of the school and researching their chosen theme.

At £3.20, the meal is incredible value for money and - as last year – every student who buys a Christmas dinner will receive a raffle ticket for a top prize! Swine Flu A Specialist College for the Visual and Performing Arts
Following guidance from the DCSF and Suffolk County Council, any student showing ‘flu-like’ symptoms will be withdrawn from lessons, and parents/carers will be advised to take their child home as quickly as possible and to seek medical advice. In these circumstances, parents/carers should telephone their GP’s surgery for advice or the NHS Direct line on 0845 4647. In order to reduce the spread of infection, the school has: • Installed antibacterial hand wash in all toilet areas of the school, and updated our infection control procedures by reminding students to wash their hands frequently, and to use tissues and dispose of them safely. • Provided antibacterial sprays to cleaning staff in order to disinfect hard surfaces daily. • Made appropriate arrangements to isolate students, and provided parents/carers with further guidance. • Considered, where practical, ways of ensuring the provision of continued education of our students in the event of an outbreak. New guidance received indicates that it is not necessary to close the school if cases of swine flu are reported. It may, however, in extreme cases be necessary to close the school if there are significant staff absences due to an outbreak. In the event of a school closure, we will seek some means of supplying work for students at home.

Bad Weather Arrangements A Specialist College for the Visual and Performing Arts
We would like to remind you of the arrangements in case of a bad weather closure, details of which are given below. School closures are a relatively rare event so assume the school is open unless you hear otherwise. Please do not telephone the school in the event of bad weather. If the school is closed the switchboard will only have an answer machine and if it is open then a large number of calls can interfere with the work of the school office. This is also an appropriate time to ask you to remind your children about taking care on the way to school. Please ensure cyclists have lights on their bikes when necessary. In addition, pupils should be adequately protected against the cold. The school does not open until 8.20 for pupils so they may well spend some time standing outside and need to be protected. Celebrating Success at Deben GCSE Awards Evening Students, parents and member of the local community enjoyed a wonderful evening of celebration at our recent GCSE Awards Presentation Evening. This year’s GCSE results are the best ever in the history of the school. The results are a testament to all the hard work and effort the students put into their studies, and to the unstinting support staff provided to help students achieve their potential. I wish each and every student continued success in the next stage of their learning, whether it be through continued education in the Sixth Form or in the world of work. The evening concluded with the presentation of the following Special Awards. The Deben Award was presented to the two highest achieving students - Claire Downs (7A*/4A grades) and William Tink (9A*/1A grades). The Diana Barnard Award was presented to the two students who made the most progress during their respective GCSE courses - Emma Downes and Jordan Field. The Lesley Ratcliffe Award, for overcoming adversity, was awarded to Conor Jones for his success and achievement despite suffering serious physical injuries in an accident last year. Now in its second year, Suffolk Skillz is an event run by local employers BT, Port of Felixstowe, Milsom Hotels, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Suffolk County Council, Customer Service Direct and Suffolk Coastal District Council. It comprises of a series of activities which are designed to develop the groups of skills set out in the framework of personal, learning and thinking skills, and therefore helps to enable young people to enter work and adult life as confident and capable individuals. The event is currently held twice a year, in the Spring and Autumn, and in October 30 Year 7, 9 and 10 Deben students took part. The day was filled with challenging activities and the students worked alongside employers to solve problems, create working spaces and learn about what technology can do for us in the future.
All of the students were great ambassadors for the school, showing creativity, knowledge and skill throughout the events, and they all agreed that the best part of the day was looking around the house of the future; 3-D TV, remote controlled heating and lighting, a fridge that alerts you when you need to buy some more milk! Make Your Mark Year 9 Challenge 16th November 2009 On Monday 16th November all Year 9 students took part in the Make Your Mark National Challenge, one of the events set up by Enterprise UK as part of the Entrepreneurship Week. The challenge draws on young people’s creativity, ideas and imagination to achieve an innovative solution for a product, service, event or attraction in one day. The aims were to inspire creative and innovative thinking and action, enhance problem solving and communication skills, involve project managing in a team environment, promote commercial awareness, develop a can-do attitude and required the teams to work to tight deadlines. Deben has entered this event with small teams of able, gifted and talented Year 9 and 10 students for the last 2 years and the decision to involve a whole year group in 2009 came from wanting to give all students the opportunity for challenge and valuable work related experience.

The assignment brief this year was to “Let local inspiration lead you to a ‘cool’ creation”; come up with a new and innovative business idea that takes its inspiration from something local. The business could be a product or a service – as long as it’s a ‘cool’ creation and makes money. The students were guided to make sure that their idea had a low carbon footprint that helped towards lowering carbon emissions. Green businesses are essential to the future of the UK economy and our planet so the students needed to consider the carbon footprint of their business and think of innovative ideas to reduce it; how their products or services are produced and transported? Could they reuse and recycle in their business? Is their idea sustainable? Does it use resources which will be exhausted? All of the teams used their creativity and knowledge to produce ideas, outline their competitors in their chosen market and a financial document showing profit and costs in their first month or year. The standard was excellent with some ingenious ideas being created and I would like to congratulate ‘Emeara’ who produced the winning entry for Deben, a plastic bottle shredder to encourage all the family to recycle their plastic. Their shredder could be used by schools and local councils alongside the bottle banks and paper recycling skips at recycling points throughout the county. I would like to thank Jeanette Brieley from Ensors Chartered Accountants in Ipswich for encouraging the students and sharing her expertise and valuable time on the day.

A fantastic variety of Christmas gift, decoration and cards will be on sale that the students have made over this half-term in their Enterprise Project. All money raised at the

Fayre will go towards the students chosen charity project CYAG. Experienced creative practitioners have been working with the students on this project which has given them the opportunity to develop their learning skills and knowledge in design, production, advertising, sales and marketing, and budgeting.

Funding for the project was made available through the Change School Creative Partnerships programme, which is all about bringing sustainable change in approaches to teaching and learning. Our commitment to creative and effective learning being at the heart of our teaching, along with offering an environment where creativity can thrive, gained us acceptance onto the programme. This particular project is the first of many other exciting learning opportunities that will be provided for students through the Creative Partnership funding. The project also included a Christmas card competition. Mr Cawley chose the winning design which was created by Sophie Luu, 7G. Sophie’s artwork will be the official Christmas card for the school this year and which will be sent by Mr Cawley to a wide variety of schools, offices, businesses and organisations.
Congratulations and well done to all the Year 7 students for their inspirational and creative hard work on this project over the past few weeks – the proceeds of which will go towards CYAG. Please support the students and come along to the Fayre with family and friends. See you there!

Work Experience Year 10 students Year 10 students will be attending a Work Experience placement on the following dates: 22nd to 16th March and 4th to 8th October 2010. A number of students do not have a Work Experience placement. Students are encouraged to arrange their own placements with my support; however if students fail to set up a placement before 8th January 2010 a placement will be allocated for them. This placement may not necessarily match the student’s preferences; so it is in their interest to set one up ASAP to avoid disappointment. All placements need to be cleared by Ms Reilly. Boost Bus at Deben High School Every Friday the Boost Bus comes onto the Deben Site for all students to access afterschool until 6pm. The Boost Bus is run by Felixstowe Christian Youth workers Trust and manned by youth worker Adrian Wolton and student volunteer Leanne Wale. Three Deben Sixth formers, part of the Impact Christian group at Deben also help man the café and talk to the young people. Activities include a chance to play board games, beat friends on the PlayStation big screen, chatting, having hot chocolate and waffles or just chilling out. For Deben this is a brilliant opportunity for the Extended Schools Programme and developing the use of the bus for lessons and lunchtime may be possible in the future. See the Boost bus at Felixstowe Skatepark on Tuesday nights and watch out around Felixstowe and Trimley as it sets up in a place near you! All pictures taken on non uniform day - (Children in Need). PE News Center Parcs Schools Badminton Tournament 2009 The Center Parcs Schools Badminton Tournament 2009 took place at Holbrook High School on Monday 23rd November.

The girls had to play a series of singles and doubles matches and as can be seen from the scores they won 8 out of 9 matches. The team scored 16pts with the closest team in second scoring only 8pts. This ensured that they won the area competition and will now go forward to represent Deben in the area finals in January. Deben High School held a ‘Pudsey party!’ on the 20th November to raise money for Children In Need. This involved the sixth formers dressing up and opening their area to the whole school at lunch time. They sold cakes, French plaits, face painting and many more games. A brave male sixth former even did a sponsored leg wax! The organiser of the event Gemma Dixon said “Thank you so much to everyone that helped make the party such a success. We raised a total of £195.65. It just goes to show that when something is for charity, people are more than willing to ‘do something different’!”

Community Cluster Event: Felixstowe Young People’s Summit Students from Deben High and all the primary schools in Felixstowe have recently been involved in an exciting community project that gave them the chance to have their say on the facilities and environment they live in.

As part of the Felixstowe Schools’ Extended Services programme, and in partnership with Suffolk Constabulary, the project began back in September with consultation events held at each school in the Felixstowe cluster. An inflatable POD with interactive screen, similar to that in Big Brother, was set up in each of the primary schools, and Suffolk Constabulary provided their interactive voting equipment for use in the two high schools. Students were invited to respond to a series of questions relating to the local area they live in and the activities they partake in during their free time. In November student representatives from each of the schools attended an interactive planning day at Deben High School to look at the results of the consultation exercise and, in groups, focus on specific outcomes. The students worked in mixed age and mixed school groups to produce a presentation that included not only the findings from the consultation, but also offer proposed solutions.

The next day the students delivered their presentations to agency and activity providers at a ‘Young People’s Summit’ at the Hotel Elizabeth in Felixstowe. Former secondary headteacher and consultant Dave Shorten, who helped lead the young people’s work over the two days said: “This is a great example of joint working within the community cluster. The project gave young people an opportunity to have their say about the community they live in. They all have strong views and opinions, which they presented with confidence at the summit event. This kind of activity gives young people the opportunity to influence decision makers and service providers in the community.” The students’ presentations focused on ‘Things we like about Felixstowe’, ‘Things we would change about Felixstowe’ and ‘New things we would like for Felixstowe’ followed by a question and answer session facilitated by ‘Mr Green’. Well done and thank you to all the students from all the schools in the Felixstowe Cluster who took part in this event. You worked really hard in your teams and certainly impressed us all with your presentations at the Summit event! Samaritan‘s Purse Shoebox Appeal

Year 7 form groups have been involved with a project linked with Old Felixstowe Parish (St Peter and St Paul, St Andrews and St Nicholas). They collected toys, gifts and toiletries to put into shoe boxes as part of the Samaritan’s Purse Appeal. 14 boxes were donated by Deben students and in total in excess of 250 boxes (they lost count) were collected! The boxes were sent to some of the world’s poorest children in Eastern Europe and Africa, helping to bring hope and a smile for them at Christmas. One new school child from Eastern Europe said he had a shoe box last year and it was the only present he received for Christmas. So along with Old Felixstowe Parish, Deben has made a difference and helped some less fortunate children feel very special and valued. Well done Year 7! Watch out for the next Year 7 Charity event which is the Christmas Craft Market on Saturday 12th December with hand made gifts and cards on sale – all in aid of the CYAG School in India project.

School Council The School Council have been working very hard to try and come up with some new ideas for CYAG (Connecting Youth Around The Globe). So far we have raised £988 which means we are nearly half way to meeting our £2000 target which we need to achieve by spring next year. One of our ideas was to have a ‘Bollywood’ evening and Bollywood dress day. We also have the Year 7 making wonderful Christmas cards and more. There will be a fayre on Saturday 12th December with all that the Year 7 have made and we would really appreciate it if you could come down and just have a look - you never know you might find the perfect Christmas card. All the money that is raised at the fayre will go to CYAG. The School Council would like to once again say a huge thank you to Mrs Franks and all the PTA who held a ‘Grease’ evening on the 17th October and donated the raffle and quiz money to CYAG. That was a huge success. We would also like you to remember that Deben is holding a Christmas Concert on Wednesday 16th December at 7pm at St Andrews Church in Felixstowe. We would love to see you there, also there will be collection boxes for CYAG around and we would really appreciate it if you could put in your pennies and pounds because every penny and pound really does help. Housing Benefit From 2nd November child benefit will be disregarded when assessing a family’s income for entitlement to Housing Benefit. The government has introduced this change as part of its national anti-poverty strategy. Suffolk Coastal District Council needs to make sure that no child or family loses out. Their benefit records will be automatically updated for existing claimants but many other parents may not know about this very valuable extra Government assistance. A big thank you to everyone who took part in Pudsey’s Party for children in Need on Friday 20th November. The Sixth Form welcomed all years in to the Sixth Form Study Centre at lunchtime. There was music, games, face painting and cakes. Thank you to everyone who kindly made cakes to be sold. And well done to Jake Read who bravely had his legs waxed in aid of the good cause. Team building/Life skills
On the 21st October, the year 12 students embarked on an orienteering adventure in Rendlesham Forest. Team building was one of the main aims for the afternoon, as well as the opportunity to gain some useful skills such as map reading. Unfortunately, the rain poured down, not giving a particularly good start. Once divided in to random groups, the teams set off, map in hand, ready to navigate through the forest following the marked trail. All but one group managed to successfully guide themselves and arrived back at the coach. However, for one group it was a sad story of trudging through the pouring rain, the map destroyed by the wet, only to find they were going round in circles with absolutely no idea which direction they were heading in. Whilst the others waited on the coach, David Wright and David Scarlett went in search for the lost group (who will remain anonymous!) Thankfully, all arrived back safely… although, they were not everybody’s best friend as the others had been waiting for just over an hour! Despite the lack of orienteering skills and the awful weather, it was a fun afternoon! E.Rowe

Year 13 Guidance
Skills for independent living/university life November 4th 2009 In preparation for surviving independent living at university and beyond, the Year 13s have been gaining experience during a recent guidance session. Some of the aims included: learning to cook simple meals, budgeting and sewing. Mrs Chapman led a group in their cooking challenge. Each student paid £1 for their ingredients and had the task of cooking up an (edible!) meal. Some of the meals produced included pasta in a sauce and chicken curry. The other two groups worked alongside Ms D’Silva to produce clothing garments out of old clothes. Skills learned were how to sew on a button, hemming and all kinds of haberdashery techniques which may prove very useful during university life. E.Rowe

Year 12 GCSE Awards Evening Wednesday 18th November It was a fantastic evening, with the chance to reunite with old friends and of course, get those all important GCSE certificates. As part of the extra curricular activities offered at Felixstowe Sixth Form, a group of year 12 and 13 students have opted to take part in a young enterprise team. The Young Enterprise Award involves over 5,500 schools and colleges throughout the country and has resulted in the creation of successful businesses and the recognition of budding entrepreneurs. The group regularly meet on Fridays after school and are currently in the discussion and planning stages of their business venture. They have allocated positions within the team in order for every area to be focused upon and to reflect real business. The project manager, Peter Finegan, is looking forward to this opportunity and describes the prospect of running a business and the possibility of gaining a contract as ‘daunting yet exciting’. The students have decided to focus their business on the selling of personalised items such as calendars. They are hoping to target and attract a wide market through setting up a website to enable online shopping. They hope to raise funds from the selling of shares and fundraising. C.Downs
