Adventure An adventure of your own

Summer 2019 is about choices and experiences to match every girl’s wishes and interests. There's discovery intertwined with fun around every bend!

The camping experience. Camp is a place where a girl can make new friends, explore the world around her and discover something she can’t wait to do again. While playing outdoors, girls encounter more opportunities for decision making that let them work together to problem solve and think creatively. Camp gives girls the chance to let their curiosity run free and spark new interests.

Special Summer Camp Discounts! Who can go to camp? The best part is that ANY girl can attend Girl Scout camps! Non-Girl Scouts simply pay an annual $25 membership fee in addition to the camp fee to become a registered 2019 Girl Scout member.

Not a Girl Scout? Register online. Go to girlscouts-swtx.org/join OR email customercare@girlscouts-swtx.org

Meet Camp Director Katie Wells! Katie is going into her second summer as director of Camp La Jita. While new to Girl Scouts, she has been a lifelong camper and outdoor adventurer. She graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies (whoop!). Katie’s favorite part of camp is providing an opportunity for girls to explore nature, experience new things, learn new skills and make life-long friends. When not at camp, Katie enjoys drinking coffee while hiking with her dog, Daisy. She can’t wait for you to arrive at camp and join her at the canoe basin this summer!

At Camp La Jita, girls will gain self-confidence and personal growth while enjoying a shared independence under the guidance of trained camp staff. Campers will reside in rustic cabins at one of Camp La Jita’s seven living units with other girls their age and two or more counselors whose cabins are nearby. Evenings promise more adventures from stargazing to campfire sing-alongs. Kapers, or camp chores, will also be a part of each day’s routine to help develop a sense of care and appreciation for keeping camp neat and clean. Did we mention our campers also help plan and cook their own campfire dinner with their unit on Thursday nights? Meals are served three times a day in Great Hall, our central dining facility, as well as afternoon snacks.

7) When will I be notified of an illness? While we strive to prevent illnesses and injuries at camp, sometimes campers can get hurt. We understand that you have a busy schedule or may want to call and check on your camper every day to see if they are okay. a. You will be notified of minor illnesses and injuries, such as blisters, scratches or cuts requiring a Band-Aid, minor sunburns or insect bites at the end of the day for Camp Metro or at the end of the session for Camp La Jita. b. If your camper has an illness or injury that concerns the health supervisor or camp director, such as elevated temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, burns, sprains or a medical situation that may require your camper to be treated at a medical facility, you will be contacted immediately. c. Camp Metro is served by San Antonio Fire Department EMS. Camp La Jita is served by Utopia Volunteer EMS and Uvalde Memorial Hospital.

8) What’s the weather like at camp? The weather varies by location but is generally hot and humid. The average high temperature is mid-90s with an average low temperature of mid-70s. At both camps, girls spend time outdoors and Camp La Jita has limited facilities with air conditioning.

9) I did not receive a confirmation packet or permission forms, where do I get them? If you have not received an email from CampDoc.com, contact Customer Care at 210-349-2404 (toll free 800-5807247) or email customercare@girlscouts-swtx.org.

10) Can my camper have a cell phone, if it doesn’t get service and will only be used as a camera? No. Camp is a time to unplug. Remind yourself why your Girl Scout is going to camp--to have a new experience and spend time with her fellow campers rather than calling or texting home. If your child is having a problem that requires getting in touch, camp staff will facilitate a phone call. Please send girls with a digital camera since all cell phones will be collected. No exceptions. New in 2019! Send one-way messages to your camper by purchasing a CampGram via CampDoc.com for $.50 each. Family members are also encouraged to connect with their campers at Camp La Jita by sending postcards or letters.

11) How do you handle food allergies? We are happy to offer accommodations for food allergies. Be sure your Girl Scout’s food allergy is specified in her health information via CampDoc.com. If we are unable to accommodate her food allergy(ies), our staff will work with you to develop an appropriate plan. Prior to registering for camp, contact Customer Care at 210-349-2404 (toll free 1-800-580-7247) or email customercare@girlscouts-swtx.org to discuss your specific requirements.

12) What items are not allowed at camp? Be sure to leave gum, candy, food, cell phones and other mobile devices, as well as valuable jewelry at home. Camp staff will collect items that are not permitted and return them to girls at the end of the day (for Camp Metro) or the end of the session (Camp La Jita).

13) Can I visit my Girl Scout at camp? No. Visiting girls during camp sessions is not allowed. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to tour camp facilities during each camp’s open house (see page 7 and 12 for details), as well as talk with staff at the time of your arrival or departure.

14) What if my daughter leaves something behind? GSSWT is not responsible for personal belongings left at our camp facilities. Lost and found items will be kept securely at the West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center. Any unclaimed items will be donated to another nonprofit on August 31, 2019. Please contact Customer Care at 210-349-2404 (toll free 800-580-7247) or email customercare@girlscouts-swtx. org for assistance in claiming your property.

STAYING OVERNIGHT? 15) Why do staff counselors sleep separate from the girls? Staff counselors do not stay in the same cabins or tents as girls to afford both girls and staff privacy. The practice also allows girls to develop a sense of independence. Staff counselors stay in cabins or tents close by, so your Girl Scout is always supervised and easy to reach in case of an emergency.

16) Are water activities safe? Water activities follow Girl Scouts of the USA’s Safety Activity Checkpoints and are supervised with the best interest, health and safety of every girl in mind. At Camp La Jita, waterfront activities take place in the Sabinal River. Sailing camp sessions take place at Medina Lake. All waterfront (river and lake) activities are dependent on the recommendation of the Corps of Engineers as to the safety of the water level (too low or too high) and the bacteria count.

17) Can I bring mail to overnight camp or do I just mail it? BOTH! You can hand carry mail for your Girl Scout and leave it at check-in or you can mail it a few days in advance. Don’t forget to put your Girl Scout’s name, session name (ex: Saddle Up) and what day you would like her mail delivered. New in 2019! Send one-way messages to your camper by purchasing a CampGram via CampDoc.com for $.50 each.

18) Can my Girl Scout choose her cabin/tent mate? Which cabin and/or tent your girl will sleep in is not preassigned. Girls will have the opportunity to choose their cabin and/or tent mate(s). Staff counselors do their best to ensure girls are placed with their chosen cabin and/or tent mate(s).

19) What if we forgot something and are already at camp? Chances are we have extra! Simply speak with your Girl Scout’s staff counselor when you arrive to see about borrowing an item (ex: towel, bedding, etc.)
