As a young and extremely talented designer Jessica began her design skills already from the young age of eleven. She then went on to study Fine arts at the Rhode Island School of design and graduated in 2008. Her career took off when she landed an internship at Pentagram. Afterwards she went onto being an associate Art director for @Print Magazine and afterwards joined Sagmeister where she currently is as a partner of the firm. I believe that many in the design industry admire Jessica Walsh, even if people are unaware of who she is but no doubt they may recognize her designs, style and words of wisdom. Her ability to create out of the box surreal ideas with visual effects is far from standard and highly imaginative. What is truly remarkable is the manner in which she represents her customer, their brands and presenting the overall message as it encourages experimentation. Using

the same idea twice would not be seen often in Jessica’s design, as she likes to have fresh ideas to ensure her ideas are original and have not been done before., therefore original. Some of her ideas have truly been inspiring and helpful to people around the world; for example the projects ’12 kinds of kindness’ and ‘40 days of dating’. These were editorial and web-based projects which were very amicable and respected by many. Jessica is also known for her typography skills and incorporating alternative methods to express words and meaning. She is very active on social media in which she is very expressive in everyday life. I am yet to find my style, which really defines me from thousands of others. However, I find JW’s work so appealing and effective I would like to challenge myself in taking a leap of faith and do a daring task to find my true style. I believe she speaks a lot of sense and I admire her for her determination and ability of achieving her success by being true to herself and expressing her

ideas through different forms and mediums. Jessica’s branding skills are an inspiration to us all and as I am also a huge fan of commercials, adverts, selling in general, I find her designs are so expressive and appealing to make one curious but mostly inspiring. I am excited about design and also want to be part of this process in using imagination to create smart ideas in order to be suitable and amazing for the client. It certainly is not boring and the imagination and thought that goes into her projects speaks volumes.

She has inspired and influenced me to look outside the box further and ensure my research is done well to obtain the most effective results. Jessica’s personal signature using vibrant bright colours, bold patterns and scripted quotes like, “Do the work that feeds your soul, not your ego” (Walsh 2015). I really appreciate her quotes and the presentation of fun in typographic forms that she uses. There is certainly fun in her work and this is also what I want to incorporate in my style as I grow.


Copyright Act 1911 is a form of protection of “original works of authorship” provided by laws of the Country that the author is situated. Copyright is also meant to ensure that the author of the work receives money from the legal sale of such works, for e.g. production, reproduction, performance, or publication of any translation, could be publication of a book, artistic work, communicating via telecommunications by any means, dramatic works, or musical. This work (musical, dramatic, literacy or artistic work that has been submitted and certified by copyright is legally covered by law for seventy years. This is counted to the end of the calendar year in which

the last remaining author of the work passes away. Typographical arrangement of published additions are not covered for the same duration; only 25 years until the end of the calendar year from the year of which the work was initially published. The current copyright legislation in the UK is the copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. It is legal to protect the use of your work once the idea has been made physically. With the use of Copyright you can do much more with your work for example copy, change it in any way or to sell it, share it online or even rent it out. With Copyright applied this will prevent other people from doing certain things with it and possibly earning money from something you created. For this to be authorized and acceptable as copyright protected it needs to be original and tangible. The original piece must be a product of your own skill and labelled (brand) or creation. This should not replicate or duplicate someone else’s work, as this

would be a form of copying from an existing drawing or a painting. For your work to be tangible it cannot be an idea you have just thought of. You need to have expressed the idea in a physical form. In view of the law it would be an offence to perform the below acts without consent of the creator. For example – to copy, alter or to even sell, sharing online or rent it to someone, to change and adapt the work in any shape or form woukd also be illlegal. The Creator has the below rights to prosecute when: - You would be identified as the rightful owner/ creator - The right to object to disrespectful treatment

What actions are allowed according to the Copyright law UK (2017) without prosecution are: - Study purposes for private use and research. - Making copies for performance, or lending for educational purposes. - Commendation and news reporting - Unimportant inclusion - Use by librarians to make copies and to lend out. - Creating back ups - Exaggeration, distortion, irritation -Acts for the purposes of judicial proceedings, royal, commissions, statutory enquiries and parliamentary purposes. -Time shifting, recording broadcasts for the purpose of listening and viewing at once.. -For personal use would only be legal for the legal author to create a back up on a computer program.

Vector illustration in itself is a very small and peculiar fraction of this practice and most importantly it often requires a technical rather than an artistic mindset which could be an unnatural approach for someone.


In this brief essay the reader will presented with a concise analysis of the copyright law in relation to UK legislation: DACS (Design and Artists Copyright Society) websites reports that the term copyright refers to a form of intellectual property which dates back to 1710 and enables different creators and artists to collect the fruits of their originals works. avoid infringement claim is to mail the production back to yourself from a postal office: this way the stamps will count as legal evidence and attests the artist contact with the discussed production at a certain time. It must be noted that copyrights works in totally different ways around the world based on the legislation and every content creator should take into the account this fact in order to preserve their property. On the same topic artists should be aware that copyright infringement is serious crime and can compromise one’s credibility as a practitioner. As a general rule, when in doubt always avoid including others creator’s works. While this subject seems very intricate, there are plenty of occasions in which an artist can use others’ productions without occurring in copyright infringement. For instance non-

This process is highly inadvisable and relinquishing from moral rights will compromise the artist identity as the true author.

S. Thorgerson was born on 28 February 1944 in the Potters Bar, UK. He had Norwegian roots what he was proud to mention in his interviews. Thorgenson is an inspiring example of pure creativity, where the ambiguity of the artworks is questioning the mind of the audience. As he mentioned in the interview his interest in art appeared in childhood when his mother introduced him to the art of Rene Magritte to whom were important not techniques but ideas behind the artwork (TateShots, 2011). Thorgerson received his BA in Philosophy and English from Leicester University in 1966 (artnet.com, 2018), later MA in Television and Film Production in 1969. Between the years in 1967 Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell established the art group Hypnosis. First works of Hipgnosis that became noticed was a cover for the album A Saucerful of Secrets of the band Pink Floyd in 1968. In order to

achieve a suitably eerie look for Pink Floyd’s second album, Hipgnosis superimposed 13 separate images on top of one another (Deriso, 2017). From this cover, the long-term partnership between Hypnosis and Pink Floyd had started. As well it brought new clients from the musical world, such as Led Zeppelin, AC/ DC, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, Scorpions, Genesis and other bands of that time (Grow, 2017). The world knows most of the artworks but two of them are the most known among others. The first is the cover of the Pink Floyd album ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ (1973). The design is simple, presenting the prism and rainbow passing through it. This design became a legend no name of the band, the image is intriguing and provoking to think. As Johnny Morgan and Ben Wardle wrote in The Art of the LP, “The album was so successful that it is this image which, for most people, immediately represents Pink Floyd…” (Deal, 2017). Another famous design is cover design for the Pink Floyd’s album “Wish You Were Here”. Whenever you look at this image with

and collage techniques were the main tools. I was asking myself, why he preferred photographs as the main source of the images for his design decisions. Was it lack of illustrating or software skills. I found the answer in his interview. Thorgenson was creating his artworks by using real people and putting them into the composition, he believed that computer manipulation or illustration stays as a fantasy and it remains like this, but artwork with real people creates a real thing (Tate, 2011).


Whenever a practitioner creates something new, his work can be under the Copyright law rules. There are different laws protecting author rights on the intellectual property all around the world. It worth to define what is copyright presents itself. Definitions might slightly differ depending on the country of established law but key features remain the same. The non-profit organization DACS (2018), aiming to protect intellectual property rights of creative practitioners gives the next description:“Copyright is a form of intellectual property that allows individuals such as artists, composers and writers to own the fruits of their creativity”. The fruits of creativity might be different such as photograph, illustration, design, architecture object, architecture plan, sculpture, installation, collage, video. The DACS states the rights that copyrights law gives to the owner: 1. Copying and reproduction 2. Selling or transferring on another basis 3. Performing and displaying work publicly. The most important part for me as a future graphic design practitioner is not only to understand how to protect my author’s rights but not to break the law by creating it. Copyrights arise as soon as original artwork was produced physically. To be original “the product of your own skill and labour or intellectual creation and should not just replicate the work of

someone else…” (bbc.co.uk,2018). Copyright has some period of application from the moment the artwork was expressed. For example, in the UK the copyright remains after the death of the author for 70 years, it means that only heirs have law right to use artwork for the commercial and other purposes. Having a broader specter of copyright lam implementation there are some exceptions where author rights will be applied, but using of this artwork will not be considered as misconduct (DACS, 2018):

It is very important before publishing own work to evaluate the possibility of plagiarism and breaking copyright law. In the case when it is questionable and there is no any clarity, the best decision would be to change work or to leave unpublished. For obtaining clarity there is a list of sources to appeal, for example, mentioned DACS or The Intellectual Property Office. Copyright and design right comparing to patent and to trademarks do not need any registration actions as it arises automatically. However, sometimes design might concern the shape of package, coloures combination and to protect them registration action should be applied. Being a student or even a practitioner makes the one collecting images of someone’s artworks as a part of the research activities that is why it is so important to make a proper referencing. Being a student of IDI University put terms of using the Harvard style of referencing.
