AROUND

& ABOUT We’ve got Hardy’s and Trinity’s barrestaurants on-site, and there’s heaps to do within walking distance of Haslar.

Walk into Gosport town for the Saturday market, or to the Submarine or Explosion museums. Explore east to Stokes Bay for a swim or dog walk (you can hop on a bus too), or take the Gosport Ferry across the harbour. The ships in the Historic Dockyard are the big draw, but there’s plenty of charm and history in Spice Island, Old Portsmouth and the Hot Walls, with Southsea Common further east. See it all from 100m above with a trip up the Spinnaker Tower. If shopping’s your thing, there are outlet bargains in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth has the usual mix of highstreet stores, and Southsea’s Palmerston Road has a more eclectic mix of shops, plus a monthly farmers’ market. Ask us to point you in the right direction for supermarkets, kids’ play areas and dog-friendly parks. We’ve got plenty of suggestions for meals out, too! 4

Mary Mouse You can’t miss the Mary Mouse, Haslar’s big green lightship. Visit Trinity’s at The Lightship (02392 503387) for a beer in the sun or tasty lunch and dinner.

Haslar Yacht

Club Look out for the green burgees, and fly one yourself!

2019 will be Haslar Yacht Club’s (HYC) tenth sailing season, and our membership currently stands at 150. Anyone who enjoys boating in the locality is welcome to join, whether their preference is for sail or power. The Club extends Haslar Marina’s friendly reputation and adds a social element to your water activities, helping to promote friendship, safety and greater confidence on the water. We support and are affiliated with the RYA, and benefit from reciprocal arrangements with the yacht clubs we visit. Our programme includes a range of sailing and social activities. This year it will include a special event to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The rallies, usually a mix of both sail and power, are mainly in the Solent, but we also head to Poole, Weymouth and sometimes across the channel. They are popular and often fully booked, with 40 or

more people attending. Berths are pre-arranged and there is usually a pontoon party followed by an organised meal ashore. Joining is easy. All you need is an email address. Visit haslaryachtclub. co.uk to find out more about the club and apply online in the ‘About the Club’ section. Membership is only £40 per annum for a ‘bundle’ of up to three members at the same address. Members’-only pages include a directory of members and their boats, a discussion forum, and other club information.

Stay safe and happy sailing Marinas and boatyards can be dangerous places. We do everything we can to keep you safe, but please take care. Our top safety tips are below... Using marina electricity Your connecting cable must be in one length, undamaged and be manufactured for use outdoors in a marine environment. Plugs should be the standard blue colour in accordance with BS EN 60309-2, position 6H. The wiring on your boat must comply with appropriate standards. On arrival • First, turn everything off and check all plugs and sockets are dry and clean. • Connect the cable to the boat, and then to the marina socket. • Never connect more than one supply to a boat, and never connect one boat to another. Before departure • First, turn off everything on board and switch off the supply. • Disconnect from the marina socket before disconnecting from the boat’s socket. Never attempt to repair or alter connecting cables, plugs or marina infrastructure. Replace anything that looks worn or damaged. If you have problems, ask the marina team for help. Pontoons can be slippery: Take extra care in wet, frosty or icy weather and at night.

Watch your step: Marinas and boatyards are full of trip hazards. Don’t leave anything blocking walkways. Man overboard: Call for help, then try to assist without putting yourself in danger. There are liferings and emergency ladders on all the walkways. The closest ladder may be on the back of a boat. Boatyards: Never loosen or move boat supports and keep well clear of all machinery and vehicles. Dogs (and children): Keep them under close control (or on a lead) and clear up after them. We can suggest places for kids and pooches to run around safely. Never carry a person or a pet in a marina trolley. Fire: Call 999 for the fire service, call the marina on VHF Ch 80 and raise the alarm as widely as possible. Evacuate via the closest gate. Don’t swim, snorkel or dive in the marina: We can give you details of divers. Everything is more dangerous if you are intoxicated: Have fun, but please be careful.
