LSU Health Shreveport | Woodard Symposium (2017)

Page 1

Welcome

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the presenters and attendees of the 6th Annual Woodard Symposium. The Woodard family has been kind and generous to have started this educational initiative in 2012, and we have made a concerted effort to plan an informative academic event.

World-renowned neurosurgeons travel from across the globe to speak with faculty, staff, and members of the medical community in Shreveport and the Ark-La-Tex. In addition, our neurosurgery residents will take advantage of this intercontinental colloquium to present their research.

I would like to thank the Department of Neurosurgery staff for organizing this event as well as the speakers and sponsors for making the Woodard Symposium a worthwhile continuing medical education event. We hope you find the symposium’ s ambitious program educational, entertaining and beneficial in advancing your skills and knowledge in the neurosurgical field.

Sincerely,

The Woodards

Eight years ago, an aneurysm threatened Larene Woodard’s life. A coiling operation at LSU Health Shreveport kept the aneurysm from bursting.

Out of gratitude to the faculty and staff at LSU Health Shreveport, the Woodards established the Scotty and Larene Woodard Professorship in the Department of Neurosurgery. Thanks to the Woodards, the physicians and staff at LSU Health Shreveport, as well as community members, physicians, and nurses who wish to be educated in the latest developments, will all benefit from the shared knowledge and expertise provided by visiting lecturers.

Though Mr. Woodard passed away on September 2, 2014, his memory will be cherished by the faculty, staff, and students of LSU Health Shreveport. The Department of Neurosurgery will always be grateful for his generosity and steadfast support of the department’s educational mission. As we gather each year for the Woodard Symposium, we honor his legacy in our community. in

Dr. Fehlings is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, holds the Halbert Chair in Neural Repair and Regeneration, a Scientist at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and a McLaughlin Scholar in Molecular Medicine. Dr. Fehlings combines an active clinical practice in complex spinal surgery with leading a multidisciplinary team of researchers that examine the application of stem cells, nano-technology and tissue engineering for spinal cord repair and regeneration.

Dr. Yigal Shoshan is a neurosurgeon and Head of Neurosurgery at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel. His areas of interest include genetics of brain tumors, patho-physiology of head injuries, and intra-operational navigation. He is consistently bringing new techniques and procedures to Hadassah Medical Center.
