The Principal’s Pen, Deanmore Primary School

Dear Parents, Our busy Term 3 is well underway and we were delighted that the weather smiled upon us for the Lapathon held on 27 August. Due to wonderful planning and preparation by a group of Deanmore parents the event turned into a great family occasion with coffee and cakes on hand to keep up the energy levels of the supporters. Well done to all participants – some set track records whilst others just steadily focussed on achieving their personal goals. Everyone contributed and the welcome spin off was a huge fundraising result for the school.

P&C Meeting - Monday 30 July In President Bruce’s inimitable style business was dealt with quickly and efficiently and the attendees were quickly on their way home to devour the Olympic coverage. At the meeting it was agreed to run a small fundraising event to replace one of the Honour Boards destroyed in the Mt Lawley Primary School fire. This year Mt Lawley celebrates 100 years of Public Schooling. At Deanmore we can well relate to the effort that goes into the planning for these celebrations. We were blessed with a wonderful 50th Anniversary that showcased much of the school’s history. Mt Lawley has lost its memorabilia and if we can extend the hand of friendship by offering a small contribution I am sure that will lift the spirit of this close knit and resilient community. Mt Lawley Principal Don Barba was delighted with Deanmore’s proposal. A Mad Scientist Day will be held on 15 August and planning by Claire Martin, Greg Downes and parent Dale Anderson is well underway. IPS Launch - UWA Club On Tuesday I presented a series of workshops to new 2013 IPS Principals and their School Board Chairpersons. It is such an exciting time for public education in WA and the Premier The Hon. Colin Barnett MLA and Education Minister The Hon. Peter Collier MLC both spoke of their delight at the way the IPS model had been so eagerly sought by communities across the state. It was heartening to share the Deanmore journey thus far with the group.

Assembly The next whole school assembly will be conducted by Ms th Jenkinson’s class on Friday 10 August. All parents and friends are very welcome. Tell A Teacher Please discuss with your children the importance of telling a teacher if something worries them at school. Ask them to inform an adult as soon as possible so that we can act on any issues. Telling a teacher something important is not “dobbing”. Children should also tell the person annoying them that they don’t like what they are doing and “Please stop.”

Calling all poets! The City of Nedlands is running the Roland Leach Poetry competition, which aims to recognise and reward outstanding original works of poetry written by children and young adults. Students from year 3 to 7 are eligible to enter with entries closing at 5pm on Friday 14 September 2012. If your child is interested in entering this competition, please collect an entry form from the front office. Attendance It’s not OK to be away! One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school everyday‐ and gets there on time. The correlation between school attendance and student achievement levels is well established. The more time that children spend at school, the more likely they are to experience academic success. It’s hard to get an accurate picture across the country. But it would appear that Australian students miss an average of between 12 to 15 days per school year. That adds up to a year’s lost schooling over the school life of a child. Missing a few minutes each day might not seem like a big deal, but your child may be missing more than you realise if he or she is continually late. Current research shows that mornings for most children are the most productive time of the day. When children arrive late and take time to settle as they inevitably do, valuable learning time is lost. As parents we need to make a commitment that our kids make the most of their precious time at school. That means sending them to school everyday, on time and ready to make the most of the school day. Excerpt from Insights by Michael Grose National Scoliosis SelfDetection Program Information for parents of schoolgirls in year 7 An information brochure on adolescent scoliosis will be sent home with Year 7 girls today. The brochure is designed to make parents of schoolgirls aware of the outward signs of scoliosis. Scoliosis is o lateral or sideways curve of the spine. It usually develops in early adolescence (10‐13 years) when growth is most rapid. If treatment is required, the earlier it is undertaken, the better the long term result. The brochure can be downloaded from www.scoliosis‐australia.org Enrolments 2013 Applications for enrolment of Deanmore students K‐7 for 2013 closed on Friday 3rd August. Letters will be sent via post on the 24th August informing parents of Kindy students of the outcome of their application. If your child will be taking a position at another public or private school in 2013, please let the office know as soon as possible. This will assist us with the planning of student accommodation and class structures for next year. Jo Marwick Deputy Principal Dates for the Diary 3rd August 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
