1.0 Knowsley House - Sloane Street

This Design and Access Statement has been prepared on behalf of The Cadogan Estate and forms part of an application for the redevelopment of the site known as 173-176 Sloane Street. The proposals are for:

“The demolition of the existing building at 173-176 Sloane Street and redevelopment to provide a new mixed use building (Class A1/Class B1) comprising basement, ground, mezzanine and first to fifth floors together with ancillary works”.

This statement seeks to illustrate the process that has led to the development of this planning application and the design of the proposed buildings. It will provide background to support the architectural approach adopted and explains the design decisions that have been made in a structured way.

Role: On this Project I worked along side a Director getting the design and the massing correct. drew all the plans and elevations as well as helping with the Design and Access document photoshopping the image and building models and getting the details drawn up. The site got planning but was yet to go ahead with the next stages.

2.0 5 Cheapside - Sugar Building - London

This comprehensive redevelopment has become one of the most sought-after City office a dresses of its type. Every aspect of what had become a tired and outdated structure has been reviewed, redesigned and refreshed – it now offers highly sustainable, column-free, grade-A office space enjoying 360-degree views of the City. By adopting the latest technology, the size of the building’s service core was reduced by 30% to deliver a highly efficient lettable space ratio. The design also carefully integrates an additional floor, further expanding the net area while working within the building envelope. The scale, grain and texture of the new elevation work together to establish subservience towards the adjacent presence of St. Paul’s Cathedral as well as maintaining consistency with the surrounding architecture.

Role: Over many years, I worked on this project with different designs by myself and others. Drawing up all the plans, elevations, and sections. Together with the architect, I helped set up the Design and Access document for Planning. The Final Design was a joint effort between myself and the Architect. I work on some of the later stages of the job helping with the entrance and cladding detail.

3.0 64 Coleman Street - Office - Moorgate

Remodelling of three buildings within the Bank Conservation Area to form a characterful office development which responds to its context.

Eight storeys of Grade A office space with a two storey basement will be formed from three buildings dating from the late 19th century, the 1950s and the 1970s.

The design resolves the differing urban characteristics to create a development with desirable office space with opportunity for retail or cafe space.

The site has dual frontages on Coleman Street and Moorgate, which are linked by Great Swan Alley on the northern boundary. The design response is to respect, preserve and enhance the local character. The façade of the 19th century of 63 Coleman Street is to be retained, with the choice of Portland stone to the new modern facades following the proportions of the street context.

The scale and grain of the openings are ordered and regular to reflect the rhythm of solid to void that is characteristic of the existing architecture. Three floors of additional space are stepped back with a series of mansard roofs to reflect the mass and scale of adjacent buildings.

A generous and inviting reception space features relaxed seating areas to create places for people to linger.

Role: I was given full control over the design of this project from the beginning, reporting to the director. The project began as a proton therapy unit building with a basement of 21 meters, but after the design and drawing of all plans and obtaining a DAS, it changed to an office building. Designing the building was challenging because it was attached to a part-listed building, which we had to keep and design around. In order to ensure the structure worked with our design, I worked alongside the structural engineer. The project got planning 3 times over the time worked on it.

4.0 224-244 Regent Street - London

Transformation of a faded, Grade ll Listed department store into a thriving, mixed-use development in the heart of the West End. The main Dickins & Jones department store traded here for just over 170 years. This important building is now completely transformed with a well considered remodelling design and complete refurbishment. It now provides prime office space to the upper floors, flag ship retail space to the lower floors and a roof-top restaurant and terrace with stunning panoramic views.

Our analysis of the prominent island site, on one of London’s busiest shopping streets, and its context, revealed a unique series of constraints and complexities. Prime retail space fronts on to the main shopping artery of Regent Street as well as Great Marlborough Street and Little Argyll Street. The new office accommodation reception is located on Argyll Street. Key features were retained in the retail space to appeal to international retailers wishing to create something special for a principal UK store.

Role: The team consisted of five architects and a director. I assisted in drawing up existing and proposed plans, elevations, and sections. Designing and detailing the bridge and walkway that accesses the upper floors of the office was one of my tasks. The curved bridge walkway was a product of many designs before we were satisfied. Designing, modeling, and photoshopping up elevation for the DAS. It was a challenge to connect the old with the new when detailing the building with the team in the later stages.

5.0 Tabard Square - London

Tabard Square is an Urban Regeneration mixed use, residential led development. It provides 572 apartments of which 212 are affordable. At its heart it provides London with a new public square accessible to all, with a mix of uses at ground level encouraging city life and vitality. Gym, crèche, supermarket, retail, and office uses surround the square with a sculptural restaurant acting as the central focus. A residential tower in the NW corner of the square is the landmark for the development and a beacon for regeneration for the Borough area.

A residential tower in the NW corner of the square is the landmark for the development and a beacon for regeneration for the Borough area.

Role: To help with this job, was put on a team to draw details in AutoCAD. Learning about modern housing through this project was a great experience for me. There were many meetings and site visits to resolve problems. The edges of slab drawings as well as the openings for downpipes are drawn by me. I got to work on detailing and designing and detailed the pavilion in the main square. This project was very interesting as we worked with Atlas Industries in Vietnam where worked previously.

In all areas a palette of subtle colours and textures are employed to give the hotel a new interior of informal elegance

Role: helped the interior designer to win the hotel project for the office, we then design and worked up the drawing for the hotel which was restored in Cardiff. Working on this project help with understanding of Interior design and detailing of interior spaces working along with Interior Designers and Architects.
