Hello and welcome to our first Deaf Interpreter conference right here in St. Paul Minnesota. The land of 1000 lakes, which I'm sure you had a grand view of upon your landing. I had not been to Minnesota for many years and the minute I landed, Minnesota it's like no other place.

That's right and with the use of technology the way that the committee communicated the planning of this conference was done mostly through glide. The ease in which all of us felt free to communicate with each other through glide was really amazing. We only met through videoconferencing as a whole committee three times during the course of this planning the majority of the work was done through glide.

Along the line of technology we also have a number of other technologies that we will be using during the course of this conference. The goal is for us to reduce the use of paper. This first national deaf interpreter conference will forever be known as the greenest conference in our field to date setting the standard for others to follow.

Welcome Letter

This is a very exciting time for all of us here together. The fact that you are all here shows your support. That really means a lot to us. This huge gathering shows the commitment from all of us to our field. That's right and speaking of support I want to extend a special thanks to our committee. The committee worked tirelessly so when you see them during the course of this conference, please tell them thank you for all of their work. I’m clear this conference would not have been possible without them.

In terms of the program scheduled for the course of this conference, we have a number of events planned. We will begin on Saturday with what we are framing as a retreat. The goal of which is to set the tone for the remaining work that we will do together at this conference. This is not only an opportunity for everyone to get to meet each other but also to have in-­‐depth conversations about the work and us as Deaf Interpreters. The work we will do together is intended to bring light on what we contribute now and in the future.

This is your opportunity to make the most out of this experience by participating fully in the dialogue with peers and colleagues. This conference brings together very experienced interpreters with many years of work behind them as well as newer interpreters that are coming into the field. The interactions we will have will show how deaf interpreters should be regarded in terms of what we bring to the task. The work that we do is largely unrecognized. Through our time together here, you'll have new tools to use to bring back to your communities and educate individuals on the distinctions and higher regard for skills we bring to this field.

In terms of the participants here the number of CDI's versus DI's is pretty well balanced. We see this as a benefit regarding the dialogue that will take place amongst all of us.

We look forward to meeting each of you during this week and remember most importantly to thank the committee members whenever you get the opportunity.

Conference!

I am the social media coordinator, who is responsible for

Introduction

This is my fourth year as a certified deaf interpreter (CDI),

recognized by Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) and other

states such as Indiana and Illinois for court licenses.

Before becoming a freelance interpreter, I was a director of

technology in Indiana until the jobs for CDI were formed in

1991.

My name is Monique Holt. I work on Entertainment Committee.

I am a CDI. I have done interpreting work in NYC and Metro DC. My actual profession is acting, directing, script-­‐writing, and coaching acting and signing. I also work with interpreters preparing to interpret shows. I teach people how to translate Shakespeare from text to sign.

Greetings everyone, It is an exciting time to be a Deaf Interpreter! There are more opportunities available than ever and, of course, the first Deaf Interpreter Conference! I am honored and grateful to be a part of DIC and to work with such a terrific group of people.

Professionally, I have been certified since 2011 and I currently do freelance work in the Washington, DC area. Most of my work is with Deaf-­‐blind students.

For some of you, DIC is only the beginning. For others, it is another landmark in the journey of a Deaf Interpreter. Either way, our paths are joined here in St. Paul, MN for this defining moment in our profession.

If you are looking for the book that includes the schedule, agenda, timetable, and order of events, you have nothing to worry about. I am here to aid as coordinator of the program book, a few other committees are here to help you as well.

Currently, I am a deaf interpreter attending workshops, mentorship programs and classes, but anticipate becoming a certified deaf interpreter in the future.

Presently, I work part-­‐time as an adjunct teaching biology at Gallaudet University and as a freelance deaf interpreter throughout various locations in Washington, DC.

Daniel LANGHOLTZ, LCSW, CDI & CLIP-­‐R

Daniel Langholtz is a longtime colleague, consumer, friend, and supporter of interpreters.

Dan has a BA degree in social work from NTID/RIT, a MA degree in social work from New York University and is a licensed social worker in California. Dan retired from the Deaf Community Counseling Services, University of California San Francisco with 33 years of clinical work, management, supervision, and training.

Mr. Langholtz works in a variety of settings including legal, medical, mental health and social. Dan has been a member of RID since 1976, served on Ethical Practices System, Mediation, Revision of Code of Ethics now known as Code of Professional Conduct, Certificate Testing Development Committees, and Strategic Challenges Bylaws Review Task Force (SCBRTF). Dan provides workshop training: enhancing interpreting skills and addressing issues facing deaf and hearing interpreters across the country.

Dan is one of the co-­‐authors in Anna Mindess’ book, “Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters”.

Kelby Brick established Brick Advantage to leverage years of experience in marketing, public policy and accessibility issues to help corporations, schools and non-­‐profits achieve the sweet spot of blending management with transformational societal changes. As a Certified Deaf Interpreter, Brick also p rovides interpreting service specializing in legal and medical settings.

Brick co-­‐authored Legal Rights: the Guide for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People, in addition to writing numerous articles that have appeared in various publications. Brick was identified as a 2012 social media expert by business2community.com.

The Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, honored Brick in 2011 with the inaugural “Kelby Brick Community Leadership Award” which has since been given annually in his name. Lillian Garcia Peterkin was born to Puerto Rican parents in New Haven, Connecticut. She graduated from the American School for the Deaf in 1981. She received a Bachelor’s degree in ASL/English Interpreting from Northeastern University in 2001. As Communication & Outreach Coordinator of the National Interpreter Education Center (NIEC), Lillian facilitated communication and reporting among the NCIEC’s work teams for 8 years. She was, herself, an active member of both the Deaf Interpreting work team and Deaf Advocacy Training work team. Lillian has presented trainings to Deaf community members on topics such as medical interpreting, Deaf interpreting, and consumer rights to interpreting services. In her work prior to joining the NCIEC, Lillian spent ten years as coordinator of interpreting services in Massachusetts and Connecticut, providing supervision, outreach, mentorship, and education to interpreters. She is currently on long disability leave due to battling cancer. Lillian is proud to have two young girls and is currently living in Hamden, CT.

“Our Deaf World and the Interpreting Profession: A Way Forward”

Lewis Merkin, from New York City, was conscripted into interpreting by dint of being the “hard of hearing” child in an all-­‐Deaf family. Studiously avoiding any thought of the profession, he went on to have successful careers as an actor (Broadway, off-­‐Broadway, national and international companies), a produced playwright (3 productions) and a community educator (GLAD-­‐ AIDS Education for the Deaf and Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services). In 1996 he realized that not only was interpreting a viable career choice, but that he thoroughly enjoyed the intellectual challenge and the camaraderie.

At this point, he set out to become certified and he dove headlong into the profession and RID. Currently, he is a staff interpreter with the NYC Department of Education. His specialty areas include Deaf-­‐Blind, sign to voice, medical and mentoring.

He served four years on the board of NYC Metro RID (including a term as President), then shifted his attention to the national level where he was chair of Deaf Members in Leadership Committee (2004-­‐2009), as well as chair of the 2009 Conference Program Committee. He was the recipient of the Judie Husted Leadership Award for Region 1 in 2005. An ongoing concern has been the diminishing voice of RID’s original stakeholders as the association have grown: the Deaf and Coda communities. For this reason, he feels it is imperative to ensure that RID’s heritage be represented at the Board level, where he currently serves as the Region 1 Representative. His commitment is helping to ensure that RID will always remember and honor its connection to the Deaf community, without which there would not be a sign language interpreting profession.

“Our Deaf World and the Interpreting Profession: A Way Forward” A synthesis of information generated and taught throughout the DIC, putting it together in a framework for action. Action to be led by the Deaf community along with CDI’s and DI’s for the advancement of the interpreting profession that will ultimately benefit consumers and interpreters.

Jimmy Beldon has been a professional involved in the interpreting field on many levels. Jimmy is the co-­‐owner of Keystone Interpreting Solution, a consulting and interpreter referral business. Additionally, he teaches at the St. Catherine University in the Interpreter Education Program on the St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Beldon received his master’s degree in Deaf Education with an ASL Specialty from Western Maryland College. He is a nationally renowned interpreter educator. He is a popular presenter requested to travel across the United States giving workshops on a variety of topics.

Jimmy has gained prominence as a certified deaf interpreter throughout the court system. He also provides consulting on issues of Deaf culture, communication needs, and working with deaf immigrants and/or refugees. Jimmy served on a national board for interpreters for 8 years and continues to volunteer his time to the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, (RID).

Jessalyn Akerman-­‐Frank, a graduate of Gallaudet University with BA in Communications and a graduate of University of Minnesota with Masters in Deaf Education, is a RYT certified Yoga Instructor. She has been teaching Deaf Yoga for over 12 years and Self-­‐Care for over 8 years, and is currently studying in the Deaf Life Coaching program with Crossroad solutions. She currently teaches at Tula Yoga Studio, Embodied Health Yoga Studio, and travels with Passage Deaf Travels, and is a special guest instructor at many conferences, retreats and private events.

Self-­‐care coaching was born out of the 12+ years of working with Deaf Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Survivors. As an advocate working with many different people, she believes we need to utilize tools to keep ourselves healthy in any field.

A featured yoga instructor in the Mantra national magazine, her message is the same everywhere, "Yoga is for everyone and everyone should have access to it".

“Deaf Yoga and Self Care”

Deaf Yoga and Self Care program provides participants with ways to reduce stress, tension and incorporate self-­‐care in their daily lives. Participants will learn simple hatha yoga poses that can be used daily, breathing techniques for on the job as an interpreter, and how to apply all of these and self-­‐care to their daily lives.

Janis Cole, (M.Ed, CDI, ASLTA-­‐P,) culture, language, literature and literacy educator, language consultant, ASL/English interpreter, community advocate, facilitator, creative arts consultant, actor, director and producer. She serves as president of LesDeux2 Productions. Currently, Janis is a student in Gallaudet University’s Ph.D in Interpretation/Translation Studies (pedagogy/research) program and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Interpretation at Gallaudet University. She was a faculty member in the ASL/Deaf Studies department at Gallaudet University teaching issues related to DEAF/ASL studies and is also interested in ASL literature, ASL literacy, and social justice. She worked at Boston University in the ASL/Deaf Studies/Deaf Education program. Janis has been in the field of interpreting since she first received her Reverse Skills Certificate (RSC) in 1977 and holds a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) certification since 1998 from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and Professional certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association. She was on the national Deaf Members in Leadership committee for 3 years. Also, she served on the Deaf Advisory Council task force. Currently, Janis is a member of the RID Elders Council.

This is the first National Deaf Interpreter conference. This Action Plan activity is strategically placed at the end as a wrap up to create do-­‐able actions intended to push for change back in the participant’s home states. Ritchie BRYANT, MS, CDI

Ritchie R. Bryant is a dynamic, native American Sign Language (ASL) user and a culturally Deaf Texan. Currently working as a professor in American Sign Language and Interpreting Training program at Austin Community College, Ritchie has been presenting ASL/Deaf-­‐related workshops for the past twenty years. Trained as an ASL mentor and ASLPI/SLPI evaluator, he used to train Deaf people to become ASL mentors for signers in the Rochester community under the Community Interpreter Grant. Ritchie obtained a bachelor’s degree in ASL Studies from Gallaudet University and a master’s degree in Deaf education from McDaniel College. He is also a certified Deaf interpreter who has been interpreting in the Deaf community since 2000. He currently serving on Deafhood Foundation board since 2013 and provided a consultant to various organizations and agencies such as development of Deaf interpreter evaluation to remote ASL mentor program. His interests include developing African-­‐American storytelling within the Deaf community, and video editing on his computer.

“Freeing Your Mind: Gesturing Visually”

This workshop is designed for participants who desire to expand their gesturing skills. This workshop provides various hand-­‐on activities that are designed to encourage the participants to reduce their reliance on ASL and to assist them in expressing concepts visually. The conceptual method of visual gesture communication will be the mainly utilized method in the workshop activities.

Lisa Perry Burckhardt is currently working for Sorenson Communication in a position as National Professional Development Program Manager specializing in trainings and mentoring. After Ms. Perry Burckhardt completed Interpreting Training Program at University of Wisconsin-­‐ Milwaukee, she has been working as a full time as Mentor Program Coordinator and Certified Deaf Interpreter for Professional Interpreting Enterprise, Inc. (PIE) of Milwaukee, WI since 1997 and is continuing her working relationship with PIE as a part time interpreter. She holds a Certified Deaf Interpreter certificate and has been certified 1996. Her work with PIE has given the countless hours of experiences interpreting in numerous settings, heavily in Legal, Mental Health and Medical. Lisa completed Legal Interpreter training series provided by Carla Mathers. As a trainer, Lisa has been involved with Wisconsin Interpreter/Translator Court committee forum in preparation of orientation trainings In addition; Lisa continued her commitment as a trainer by providing Legal Interpreter Training Institute series in Wisconsin with PIE (referral agency), Lisa also holds Certificate Legal Interpreter Provisional – Relay (CLIP-­‐R) awarded by RID. “Legal: Interacting with the Players”

The workshop is designed based on Deaf Interpreters in Legal settings breaking down into three sessions which are 2 hours each. To receive full .6 CEUs, the participants will be required to attend all three sessions. Participants in will also be required to take non-­‐graded on-­‐site pre-­‐ test and post-­‐test.

Session 1: “Identifying the Need for a Deaf Interpreter”

This workshop will provide a framework to articulate the reasons in persuasive and articulate manner.

“Interpreting for Deaf Youth: Ethical Considerations”

Interpreting in child welfare matters is a challenging task. Due to sensitive nature of interpreting for Deaf children who may have been sexually molested (including rape), Deaf interpreters, along with their team members, must consider effective approaches in working with the investigator, social worker, an agent from child protective services and the Deaf child.

What considerations need to be undertaken for the language of the Deaf child, specific signs, background information about the Deaf child, the role of the Deaf interpreter and the team member?

Three case studies will be presented in a video for group discussions on ethical considerations, approaches, and strategies to assist in providing effective interpretation. Each group will have an opportunity to present their case study analysis with guidance and recommendations from the workshop leader. A framework will be presented for a critical analysis and decision-­‐making processes. Self-­‐care strategies will be discussed to prevent vicarious trauma.

“Ethics and Considerations and Challenges for Deaf Interpreters”

This course will provide a brief review of the field of interpretation and service models of interpreting and Deaf interpreting; identification of responsibilities; current and evolving roles, which affect ethical making decisions. This workshop will focus primarily on Ethics and ethical making-­‐decision processes for Deaf Interpreters related to ethics and RID's Code of Professional

Gino Gouby has worked for Gallaudet Interpreting Service since 2009 and he also coordinates the Emergency Interpreting Program at Gallaudet. Prior to working at Gallaudet, he worked over five years as the Professional Development Manager within the VRS field. He brings to this workshop, over 16 years of experience as an interpreting trainer and practitioner. He has presented on local, regional, national and international level. Leslie GREER, MA, ASLTA: Professional

Leslie C. Greer received her MA from the University of Rochester, New York in Linguistics. She holds Professional Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) and serves as ASLTA certification evaluator. She is a past president of ASLTA for two terms. She served the Conference of Interpreter Trainers as Director of Public Relations and Outreach from 2007 to 2012. Leslie is currently the first Deaf President of CIT since 2012. She had a stint as a weekly TV talk show host with ASL as the official language and was dubbed the “Deaf Oprah.” Currently Leslie is the ASL Department Chair at the Mt. San Jacinto College, Menifee, California. She has presented numerous workshops on sign language teaching, Deaf culture, linguistics and interpreting throughout the country and world. She is fluent in Japanese Sign Language.

“Deaf Interpreting tools and resources”

The interactive workshop is designed to provide Deaf interpreters tools and resources for growth and advancement in the interpreting profession. The session will cover four areas: Assessment of Knowledge, Skills, and Perspectives (aka: Attitudes); Analysis of Research-­‐ based/Evidence-­‐based Resources; Analysis of Community Relations; Development of Self-­‐ empowerment Plan. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their growth and develop plans for strengthening their knowledge and skills by working through these four areas.

Participants will work with evidence-­‐based, published materials that are made available by National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC), and these materials are resourceful for enhancing the effectiveness of one’s interpreting work, teaching and/or mentoring. Participants will also learn more about our national organization, Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT), which provides current trends, studies and research regarding to the interpreting profession. CIT also provides the opportunity for networking and outreach. Hands-­‐on application and performance are emphasized throughout the session.

This workshop will explore strategies and techniques used by a team of two Deaf Interpreters (DIs). This workshop will draw heavily on experiences gained by various DI teams working within Gallaudet Interpreting Services. Information will build on concepts set forth by Hoza (2010) and Sforza (2013) and unique teaming strategies and concepts as used by DI teams will be introduced. Participants will engage in group discussion and activities designed to enhance how a DI can actively and effectively attend to the message. As well as, effectively supporting a DI team member utilizing specific and effective teaming strategies.

Teri HEDDING, MA, CDI

Teri Hedding is a manager of Sinai Deaf Health at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago where she is responsible for day-­‐to-­‐day management of interpreters and healthcare access to service Deaf and hard of hearing patients. She also provides health education in the Deaf community. Her work experience includes counseling, case management, crisis intervention, and advocacy. She graduated from Gallaudet University in 1993 with a master's degree in mental health counseling. Since 2009, she

contributes to the development of an online curriculum “Deaf Interpreter/Hearing Interpreter Teams” and its translation for NIEC. Kirsi is also part of the groundbreaking first Deaf cohort trained to disseminate “Deaf Interpreter Curriculum” provided by NCIEC. Furnished with the curriculum modules to train, you will find her presenting about Deaf mentoring, Deaf-­‐centered interpreting theories and processes, teaming, and self assessment tools.

Kirsi received her Master’s degree in Interpretation from Gallaudet University. In addition to training and interpreting, Kirsi also conducts research on certified Deaf interpreters’ entry pathways to the interpreting profession and has assisted in multiple research projects in linguistics and interpretation since 2005. This experience has given her intimate knowledge of the current state of art knowledge of published literature on interpretation.

“Interpreting Theory and Practice for Dis”

How often did you hear about different processing Models like Cokely’s or Colonomos’ in other workshops, but rarely see or discuss about its application to you as a Deaf interpreter? This is for you! This workshop enables learners to understand that the task of interpreting is physically and cognitively demanding, and that Deaf interpreter need to exercise self-­‐awareness to provide effective interpreting service. Learners will understand the benefit of applying theoretical models of interpretation to improve their Deaf interpreting effectiveness. Decision-­‐ making is central to the task of interpretation and translation. Deaf interpreters must stay current in the field by reading, analyzing and synthesizing the growing body of research on interpreting and Deaf interpreter practice.

She has a BFA in Acting from Tisch School of the Arts/New York University and an MFA in Theatre from Towson University. She has worn almost all the possible theatre hats: guest presenter for theater, actor, dancer, director, playwright, stage manager, choreographer, actors' sign coach, script translator, DASL (Director of Artistic Sign Language -­‐ for interpreters who interpret the show for Deaf audiences); an instructor in: acting, translating, performance without words, and developing a one-­‐person-­‐ show. She is a huge supporter of collaboration in theatre. She still works with several different small theatre companies and develops new projects. She is a member of both unions: Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) and Screen Actors Guild-­‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-­‐AFTRA). In 1997, Monique started her first interpreting gig. In 2013, she got her CDI. She has been a RID member since 2010 and PCRID member since 2013.

“Healthcare System Navigation”

Accepting a medical assignment in a hospital can be daunting with all of the medical jargon, protocols, and requirements thrown at you as an interpreter. In this workshop, you will become familiar with the roles and responsibilities in the Emergency Department. Tips will be shared as to how you can work more effectively in the Emergency Department. Information about infection control and standard precautions will be discussed so you can take the steps in preventing yourself and the patients from getting sick or infected. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Joint Commission requirements will also be shared so you can understand what your responsibilities are as an interpreter working in a hospital. Different legal forms such as the living will and the Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order will also be explained. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to gain confidence in navigating through any healthcare system.

Daniel LANGHOLTZ, LCSW, CDI & CLIP-­‐R Daniel Langholtz is a longtime colleague, consumer, friend, and supporter of interpreters. Dan has a BA degree in social work from NTID/RIT, a MA degree in social work from New York University and is a licensed social worker in California. Dan retired from the Deaf Community Counseling Services, University of California San Francisco with 33 years of clinical work, management, supervision, and training.

Mr. Langholtz works in a variety of settings including legal, medical, mental health and social. Dan has been a member of RID since 1976, served on Ethical Practices System, Mediation, Revision of Code of Ethics now known as Code of Professional Conduct, Certificate Testing Development Committees, and Strategic Challenges Bylaws Review Task Force (SCBRTF). Dan provides workshop training: enhancing interpreting skills and addressing issues facing deaf and hearing interpreters across the country.

Dan is one of the co-­‐authors in Anna Mindess’ book, “Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters”.

“Vicarious Trauma – Potential Hazards and Interventions for Interpreters”

The 2-­‐hour workshop will examine and understand Vicarious Trauma, and recognize its impact on our interpreting profession. Vicarious Trauma experienced in other professions and the ways they deal with it will be discussed. Interpreting events and settings that have high risks for Vicarious Trauma will be reviewed. In examining various approaches in dealing with V.T., participants will refer to the Code of Professional Conduct.

Carole LAZORISAK, MA, RID: RSC, CDI, ASLTA: Professional, Master Mentor

Carole Lazorisak has been in the interpreting field since 1975. Her work has been in the development of interpreter and language assessments; the design of interpreting courses, training sessions and workshops, and mentoring programs.

She has been providing language and interpreting training. Carole is also an author of numerous articles and a published book. She has been a consultant with the National Consortium of Interpreter Education supporting the development of DI Competencies. Carole is serving as Conference of Interpreter Trainers Director of Professional Development. Dr. Jeff Lewis is Professor of Counseling at Gallaudet University and previously served as Director of Gallaudet’s MA Mental Health Counseling Program. He is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Distance Counselor and has a small private practice. Jeff enjoys doing couples and group counseling as part of his clinical work. He has worked extensively with deaf and hearing interpreters both in classroom and clinical settings.

“Deaf Interpreters: Reframing Our Field”

Since the conference is offered as an experience that builds upon itself, this three-­‐ part workshop functions as an anchor for the five-­‐day conference.

Part I -­‐ Gathering-­‐ A Beginning Description-­‐ In this opening session the vision for the conference is shared, looking to inspire participants to turn inward and to be willing to engage with colleagues with unconditional positive regard as a starting place. Specific tools for open engagement will be offered as underpinnings of the conference.

Part II – Reflecting-­‐ Where are We Now? Description-­‐ The focus on the role and dynamics of DI will continue throughout this session, focusing both on the professional self and the personal self of the interpreter as well as the communities that the DI are part of.

Part III -­‐ Future Directions-­‐ Where Do We Go Next?

Description-­‐ An opportunity to come together as a whole group, to share what we have learned, what has shifted, and what we still want to know. In this final session, we come together again to have final conversations that will map our future work.

Beth LUCEY, MA, CDI

Beth Lucey is a Deaf Massachusetts native from all-­‐hearing family. Her educational background included a self-­‐contained class, mainstreaming elementary and high school programs and Clarke School for the Deaf. She graduated from Gallaudet University twice: in 1997 with triple Bachelors degrees in ASL, Deaf Studies and Psychology and in 2002 with Masters degree in Interpretation (MAI), both times with honors. She was the fourth Deaf person to complete MAI requirements and the first Deaf ever to win the Ron Coffey Excellence Award in Interpretation, the department’s

Resources; Analysis of Community Relations; Development of Self-­‐empowerment Plan. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their growth and develop plans for strengthening their knowledge and skills by working through these four areas. Participants will work with evidence-­‐based, published materials that are made available by National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC), and these materials are resourceful for enhancing the effectiveness of one’s interpreting work, teaching and/or mentoring. Participants will also learn more about our national organization, Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT), which provides current trends, studies and research regarding to the interpreting profession. CIT also provides the opportunity for networking and outreach. Hands-­‐on application and performance are emphasized throughout the session.

Trenton MARSH, CDI

Trenton Marsh is a full time staff CDI at the Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been certified since about 2005. Trenton first got involved with interpreting as a language mentor to students at the Front Range Community College in Colorado. Later, he bumped into Gino Gouby, a childhood friend who first introduced him to the world of CDIs. Soon afterwards, after a move to Utah for even better skiing, he got involved with mentoring interpreters again at the Community Center and decided to pursue CDI certification. Since then, Trenton has worked in a variety of settings, including medical, legal and platform. His platform work includes two CIT conferences, the 2007 Deaf Winterlympics Opening Ceremonies and several other local and regional conferences. Trenton is now busy teaching his kids to ski and race BMX among many other hobbies!

“Understanding our Consumers: The key to providing effective communication access”

This workshop is based on the DI Curriculum, Module 3: Consumer Assessment-­‐Identifying Culture, Language & Communication Styles. Understanding our consumers is key for interpreters’ decision-­‐ making process regarding service provision. Once interpreters receive information regarding an assignment, preparation should begin in assessing the communication needs of the consumers and how interpreters can best staff the assignment, request/bring resources, and provide the service effectively. It is important to acknowledge that Culture plays a large part in understanding our consumers and this is an area where DIs can greatly contribute to the interpreting process. This workshop will introduce concepts such as an acculturation chart and other strategies that DIs can incorporate into their work.

“Onward, Onstage!”

Many people have different views on the benefits and effectiveness of Deaf Interpreters working onstage at high-­‐level conferences. “Who exactly are the consumers? Why would it be necessary? There already are experienced and highly trained ASL Interpreters who can do the work.”

What we often don’t discuss is the fact that Deaf and Hearing people DO communicate differently. What CAN Deaf Interpreters offer to members of our community? This requires a shift in

highest award. She completed a yearlong intensive mentorship program with Gallaudet Interpreting Service and maintained RID certified status since July of 2000. In her spare time, she loves to read books, talk about spirituality, do yoga and nature walks and devoted her time on 4 cats with her partner.

Currently, she works full time as freelance CDI in the state of Massachusetts.

“WHY 2? Justifying the Rationale for a Deaf-­‐Hearing Team”

Workshop will open up with a brief history of how Deaf interpreters evolved over the years with a time line. There will be a focus on understanding each four stakeholders’ thought world, how to explain team’s roles, discuss what interpreting process entails and demonstrate the value of team to all stakeholders and other parties (requestors, staffs, job coach, family members, medical profession, etc.)

This workshop will have several role plays, small group dialogues, brainstorm session and sharing participants’ experiences with real world scenarios provided.

Lewis MERKIN, CDI Lewis Merkin, from New York City, was conscripted into interpreting by dint of being the “hard of hearing” child in an all-­‐Deaf family. Studiously avoiding any thought of the profession, he went on to have successful careers as an actor (Broadway, off-­‐Broadway, national and international companies), a produced playwright (3 productions) and a community educator (GLAD-­‐ AIDS Education for the Deaf and Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services). In 1996 he realized that not only was interpreting a viable career choice, but that he thoroughly enjoyed the intellectual challenge and the camaraderie.

At this point, he set out to become certified and he dove headlong into the profession and RID. Currently, he is a staff interpreter with the NYC Department of Education. His specialty areas include Deaf-­‐Blind, sign to voice, medical and mentoring.

He served four years on the board of NYC Metro RID (including a term as President), then shifted his attention to the national level where he was chair of Deaf Members in Leadership Committee (2004-­‐ 2009), as well as chair of the 2009 Conference Program Committee. He was the recipient of the Judie Husted Leadership Award for Region 1 in 2005. An ongoing concern has been the diminishing voice of RID’s original stakeholders as the association have grown: the Deaf and Coda communities. For this reason, he feels it is imperative to ensure that RID’s heritage be represented at the Board level, where he currently serves as the Region 1 Representative. His commitment is helping to ensure that RID will always remember and honor its connection to the Deaf community, without which there would not be a sign language interpreting profession.

Amy PETERSON, CDI

Amy Peterson works as a CDI in a variety of settings and has extensive knowledge and experience in legal and mental health settings for 20+ years. Currently, Amy is the Deaf Services Coordinator for the State of Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. Amy has taught ASL for more than 15 years at universities, community colleges, and in the community and has presented workshops on a variety of topics related to American Sign Language, interpreting, and Deaf culture/history. She has a passion to raise the bar on expectations for

philosophy, both within the Interpreting profession and between Deaf and Hearing Cultures. I want to discuss this with our fellow Deaf Interpreters and offer a fresh perspective on this issue.

In this workshop, we will cover the practical parts of Platform Interpreting such as preparation, poise, register, teaming and so forth. We will also learn onstage presentation techniques from our Signmasters and incorporate these skills in our work. See you there!

Rayni PLASTER, CDI

Rayni Plaster has a degree in Communication Studies and currently coordinates the only live/work visiting interpreter mentoring program for Deaf Interpreters in the nation called the Results! Mentoring Program at Gallaudet Interpreting Service. Rayni was the first-­‐ever licensed Deaf interpreter in the state of Nebraska and has been interpreting professionally for the past 10 years. She trains Deaf interpreters nationwide and has influenced the training of Deaf interpreters through her work with the first Deaf interpreter general curriculum (2014) as well as the first Deaf interpreter legal curriculum (2015). She works with a variety of hearing interpreters in legal, mental health, and educational settings and has developed plans for addressing the variety of issues that arise in the DI/HI team dynamic on the job. While interpreting is her first love, she has been fortunate enough to pursue her passion of mentoring interpreters using proven techniques founded in the principles of Vygotskian Theory. She has logged over 400 hours mentoring both pre-­‐certified and certified Deaf and hearing interpreters.

“Who’s the Boss? DIs Leading the Interpreting Team” Have you ever been told the DI is supposed to be the lead interpreter on the DI/HI team? Have you ever wondered what that even means? Is there some magic thing that we are supposed to do? Deaf interpreters have always been taught that we are to lead the interpreting team on assignments. While we understand this on a theoretical level, in practice there are many variables that cause the Deaf interpreter to give up their role as the team leads. Because leveraging the power dynamics for the Deaf consumer is one of our main responsibilities, being prepared to lead the team is not an option, it is required. Experienced interpreters list this skill as a "must-­‐have" for Deaf interpreters working with hearing interpreting teams in predominantly English/Speaking environments. This workshop will examine the importance of the DI in the lead role, root cause(s) of discomfort in that role, and how to prevent that discomfort from influencing our leadership decisions. Together we will explore the obstacles, identify and practice fundamental skills, and create action plans to tackle the task of establishing yourself, the DI, as the leader of the team.

June Prusak, a native ASL user from Deaf parents, resides in Chicago area. She graduated with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Gallaudet University in

interpreters, especially in the mental health, legal and educational setting. Amy has been married to Jimmy for 28 years and has two girls who are also Deaf. They reside in the metro Atlanta, Georgia.

“Mental Health”

As the profession of interpreting matured, those who were involved in Mental Health interpreting were doing what felt right in the situations into which they were called. Those “this-­‐feels-­‐right” decisions may have been in align with best practices; however, the beneficial moves toward providing access to effective therapy may have been counteracted when the next interpreter’s “this-­‐feels-­‐right” decisions were not the same. During this training, we will discuss the many variables that come into play under the big umbrella that is Mental Health interpreting. It is mandatory on us as Deaf Interpreters to know our role and the expectations as well as the language norms and unusual usages that we may encounter.

Session 3: “Working in Law Enforcement: The Constitutional Basis for the Miranda Warnings”

This workshop will prepare Deaf Interpreters to become familiar with the underlying meaning of Miranda Warning when interpreting for the police. Participants will be analyzing the verbatim of the Miranda warning and demonstrate their interpretation of the Miranda warning.

Naomi SHENEMAN, MA, MS, CDI, ASLTA: Professional Naomi Sheneman has been working professionally in the interpreting profession since 2000 in different roles including interpreter, trainer, mentor, supervisor, diagnostician and consultant. She is currently working as the Kaizen Director for Network Interpreting Service and is a doctoral candidate at Gallaudet University in the Interpretation program in the Research Track. She developed Interpreting Diagnostic Assessment Rubrics (ASL-­‐English/ English-­‐

1993. Prior to becoming a Certified Deaf Interpreter, she has worked as a Youth Program Coordinator working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children for twelve years. After observing the work of both certified Deaf and hearing interpreters at the RID conference in Chicago, she was motivated to pursue national certification. She successfully achieved her goal in 2005 when she obtained her status as a Certified Deaf Interpreter. She pursued further professional credentials in 2009 by obtaining her CLIP-­‐R (Conditional Legal Interpreting Permit-­‐Relay). She currently works full-­‐time as a freelance interpreter in a variety of settings, including tactile and pro-­‐tactile. June prides herself on her ability to use her bilingual and bicultural knowledge to benefit Deaf consumers and hearing team interpreters. In addition to June’s experience in legal, she co-­‐presented with Carla Mathers on orientation of Administration Office of Illinois Courts. June participated in train the trainer with NCIEC focusing on CDI in Legal settings and Legal Interpreter training modules.

“Legal: Interacting with the Players”

The workshop is designed based on Deaf Interpreters in Legal settings breaking down into three sessions, which are 2 hours each. To receive full .6 CEUs, the participants will be required to attend all three sessions. Participants in will also be required to take non-­‐graded on-­‐site pre-­‐test and post-­‐test.

Session 1: “Identifying the Need for a Deaf Interpreter”

This workshop will provide a framework to articulate the reasons in persuasive and articulate manner.

This will provide you the tools to utilize with the attorneys and judges to understand the role and function of Deaf Interpreter. Participants will participate in variety formats; interactive group discussion, video analysis and group work.

Session 2: “Team Interpreting Protocol: Teaming with Deaf Interpreters”

This segment will discuss a deeper appreciation of agreement that need to be addressed with various team prior to interpreting in legal setting. A clear understanding and expectation of the work in forming an effective team in legal setting will ensure a successful outcome. This session will incorporate some hand-­‐on activities.

Branton STEWART, CDI & CLIP-­‐R Branton grew up with his Deaf family north of Atlanta and attended Gallaudet University where he majored in Government and minored in Business Administration.

Branton had held volunteer positions at NAD and RID. Such positions were vice chairperson for Deaf Caucus under RID, NAD delegate for GA and NY at four conventions, and President of Empire State Association of the Deaf. He was also involved with several organizations in Atlanta, Rochester, and Southern California to help improve the quality of communication among the Deaf and interpreters. Branton is currently a Deaf Advisory Council member for RID. Branton’s career has always included some type of partnership with the Deaf and interpreting field. During the last sixteen years, his career endeavors have centered on the interpreting industry.

Other positions Branton have held were: lobbyist, coordinator, director, marketing, recruiter, and a VRS manager. He currently owns a company called CDI Network (www.needCDI.com). For fun, he does stand-­‐up comedy.

“How to run a self-­‐employed business” The goal of this workshop is to understand how to successfully run a self-­‐employed business. Participants will learn the ins and outs of starting and running a business. They will learn the contents of a business plan and understand the significance of having a well-­‐developed business plan. The role of a business owner and its requirements will also be discussed.

“How do we do Ethics?”

Naomi conducted a research study investigating Deaf interpreters’ ethical decision-­‐making process.

Results indicate that information-­‐sharing and cultural meditation are common ethical choices that Deaf interpreters make. Advocacy was an important topic in the interviews and it was dissected through conversations about how cultural meditation is not the same as advocacy. Deaf interpreters’ decisions are mainly collectivistic due to their shared Deaf experiences but the level of training they obtained determines whether they are high-­‐context in their ethical decisions.

In this workshop, Naomi will be sharing details from her research. For the most part of the workshop, there will be interactive discussions. The participants will have an opportunity to assess some real-­‐life ethical scenarios to determine how their decisions will be made. A selection of CPC tenets will be highlighted for the participants to discuss what each means from the Deaf consumer view and Deaf interpreter view, which are often different. We will also discuss who make the ethical decisions in Deaf-­‐ hearing teams. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of an ongoing discussion of how Deaf interpreters approach ethical decisions.

“Consecutive & Simultaneous Interpreting within Legal Context”

A discussion of the theories underlying consecutive and simultaneous interpreting methods and note-­‐ taking strategies will lead to the opportunity to both view interpreters interpreting various legal texts consecutively and simultaneously, and the opportunity to practice both methods of interpreting.

Purpose: The module aims to give learners practical experience interpreting and analyzing various texts through structured practice. Through guided hands on practice, learners will be introduced to discourse analysis, consecutive interpreting, note-­‐taking and simultaneous interpreting techniques. The module seeks to provide a theoretical underpinning as well as tools and strategies that learners can hone to incorporate the three commonly used modes of interpreting into their work.

Consecutive Interpreting: Through an examination of the types of settings in which consecutive interpreting and note-­‐taking are typically used and the types of legal discourse that can be anticipated during witness testimony, learners will become familiar with consecutive interpreting and note-­‐taking as used by Deaf-­‐hearing teams.

Simultaneous Interpreting: Deaf interpreters must be able to simultaneously interpret texts such as jury instructions or the testimony of hearing witnesses just like hearing interpreters must be able to interpret these texts simultaneously. Simultaneous interpreting in a Deaf-­‐hearing team context is an acquired skill, which must be practiced to be effective.

*Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptop/iPad/smartphone to view clips during hands-­‐on activities.

“Contemporary Translation”

Contemporary Translation will explore the historical evolution of translation and its parallel to interpreting. We will touch on some theoretical frameworks including but not limiting to Nida, Skopos theory, Hatim and Mason, and a few others. These theories will tie into the role of Deaf Interpreters and how Deaf Interpreters can and should be an integral part of the translation process from English to ASL and vice-­‐versa. We will compare and contrast between translation and sight translation. Participants will engage within group activities focusing on translations and group discussions.

Christopher Tester is Deaf and a consultant, educator, interpreter and trainer. A seasoned presenter, he specializes in workshop and seminar facilitation on topics (not limited to) disability rights and laws, Deaf and hard of hearing awareness, and interpreting. He currently is an adjunct faculty member of the CUNY’s ASL/English Interpreter Education Program. He has interpreted for several off and on Broadway shows, National and International conferences, at the United Nations and specializes in legal interpreting.

Chris is currently pursuing his master’s degree through the European Masters in Sign Language Interpreting at Heriot Watt University. Based in Chicago, IL, DeafBlind Bryen M Yunashko is the National Advocacy Specialist for Helen Keller National Center. He got his first taste of advocacy more than a quarter-­‐of-­‐a-­‐century ago, when, as a performer in Los Angeles, he joined forces with a music industry producer to campaign for closed-­‐caption inclusion in music videos, sparking the phrase “I want my MTV too!” and earning a mention in Billboard Magazine. Today, Bryen criss-­‐crosses the country as an advocacy, interpreter and technology trainer specializing in accessibility for DeafBlind individuals. Prior to becoming involved as an advocate, he specialized in technology first as an IT consultant for major corporations and later as a member of the open-­‐source software community serving as Accessibility Outreach Coordinator for the GNOME Desktop Foundation and as marketing team lead and first-­‐ever DeafBlind board member of a major Linux distribution for the opens USE Project, traveling over 140,000 miles worldwide as speaker and conference organizer. In his current capacity, Bryen serves as member of the Chicago Transit Authority ADA Advisory Committee, chair of the Illinois IDHHC's SSP Task Force, member of the National Task Force on Deaf-­‐Blind Interpreting, serves on the FCC's Disability Advisory Committee and as chair of the National Task Force on DeafBlind Transportation Review and advisor of the National Deaf-­‐Blind Equipment Distribution Program, as well as serving as consultant for agencies and organizations that serve the DeafBlind community.
