The Northern Cape Province has increased its vaccination sites to three DE AAR: The Northern Cape Province has increased its vaccination sites to three, with two new sites at the Kuruman Hospital and Old Gordonia. According to the Department of Health in the province, the sites will be completed by the outreach teams focusing mainly on various old age homes in both districts. De Aar hospitals in the Pixley Ka Seme district and Dr. Van Niekerk hospitals in the Namakwa District are expected to also operate this week as vaccination stations. On Saturday last week, the Northern Cape received the second batch of 390 vials of Pfizer vaccine. The Department of Health said that the province will now be able to vaccinate over 1 170 people in the ZF Mgcawu and NATIONAL (DE AAR) – NC): The Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Census 2021 Pilot will use online registration in conjunction with traditional data-gathering methods, offering residents an alternative to home visits and telephonic interviews. The census pilot acts as a “dress rehearsal” for the main census, according to Stats SA. Registration started on 17 May and will carry on until 30 June 2021 for selected areas. Meanwhile, actual data collection for the pilot takes place from 3 to 28 July 2021. However, those who register online have to fill the questionnaire by 8 July — otherwise, they will be moved to the list of households that require a home visit. According to Stats SA, all households in the selected areas must register. How to register for the pilot census online: If you want to avoid a telephonic interview or home visit, you can register online on the official census pilot website. You will then receive a link to complete the questionnaire between 3 and 8 July. Below is a list of the selected areas for the pilot census. Only specific suburbs/areas within these regions need to register — you can see a more detailed list on the Stats SA Facebook page. 1 170 in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district. A total of 9 502 health workers have already been vaccinated in the province as part of the first phase. The Northern Cape Health MEC, Maruping Lekwene, has urged the public to adhere to Covid-19 regulations. In a media release of the Northern Cape Provincial Government, Lekwene explained that the resurgence in the province is a result of the continued gathering of groups at schools, old age homes, funerals, households, and the behavioral change during religious gatherings and private gatherings. He reiterated adherence to Covid-19 regulations and warned against complacency, as infections keep on rising in the province.

Lubaleko, Esidakeni, Mrholweni, Dukathole, Cabazana, Brooksnek, Bumbeni, Gqberha (Port Elizabeth). The Council of Education Ministers has taken a decision to suspend all contact sports in schools with immediate effect. The decision was taken in a virtual meeting held Wednesday 19 May 2021. Non-contact sports training in schools can continue provided that all social distancing, hygiene, and safety measures are observed and that there is no physical contact between participants during training. In 2021, after the reopening of schools and consultations with education stakeholders, the DBE gazette directions allowing non-contact sport, sports-related activities, and school! based art and cultural activities to resume without spectators, subject to adherence to safety measures. Further, on 12th February 2012, Minister of Basic Education Mrs. Angie Motshekga gazette directions on school sports and extramural activities, noncontact sport, sports-related activities, and school-based art and cultural activities to resume subject to health and safety protocols. During the last week of Term 1, school sports activity related to COVID-19 outbreaks in Gauteng Province were

reported and have been gradually increasing in Term 2. It is evident that despite following the protocols as guided by the Directions on extramural activities and Standard Operating Procedure on the prevention, containment, and management of GOVID-19 in schools, contact sports events still contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Following the school sports activities related to COVID-19 outbreaks in Gauteng and the general rise of cases in communities across the country, the Outbreak Response Team (ORT) said that the risk was high when engaged in closecontact sports, especially with people who did not live together. In this regard, all sporting activities have been suspended with immediate effect until the cluster outbreak is subsequently over with no further cases reported including the preparatory school sport. The Department will continue to monitor the situation. A government gazette will be issued with the notice in the coming days. ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF BASIC EDUCATION

Website Blog – May 2021: In the times, Country and Government we’re living with, it can be very easy for any Author of especially the Transport and Logistical Side of the Economy to get caught up in vacuum of total negativity. Therefore, because we must acknowledge and address both the up and downside of the State of Affairs effecting our economy and the psychological impact of the average working and Tax paying Citizen. I thought it good to start off with the more negative facts and hopefully end off on a happier note! Looting on Accident Scenes: On May 16th on the N5 between Kestell and Harrismith, a Truck fell over, which lead to yet another big “free for all” take away shop!! Looters arrived in their dozens with cars and bakkies loading up bags of flour. The truck driver was lucky to escape the ordeal and was transported to a hospital because of injuries caused by the accident. Scenes like

these have become very common throughout South Africa with no action taken. No wonder, if one looks at what came out of the Zondo Commission this comes as no surprise as the people just look and follow what their leaders did to the tills of our beloved Country to the benefit of themselves and their families and cadres! Also, on 3 May 2021 (just another incident amongst many others) two trucks were set alight by a group of assailants on the R59 East of Johannesburg. According to News 24 the suspects shot at the trucks which forced the drivers to bring them to a halt. They started throwing petrol bombs at the trucks which lead to the drivers jumping out and ran away. No arrests have been made, as this is a “free to loot civilization” where the Authorities and police fear the criminal. This was only two incidents mentioned, we will not elaborate about the ATDF that also make transport and logistics

very challenging. On a more positive note: It seems that the availability of new Trucks is slowly but surely on the increase which leads to more used trucks getting traded in and that is good news to the Used Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market. According to Focus Magazine, Heavy Commercial vehicle sales saw an increase of 1440 units, or 3% compared to last year up to end Feb and March also delivered a growth of 35% with 1800 heavy commercial vehicles sold, more than 470 vehicles compared to the previous year. According to NAAMSA CEO, Mikel Mabasa the Industry is expected to recapture on the lost demand suffered during 2020. When can you register to vote in the 2021 municipal elections? The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will host a national voter registration weekend on 17 and 18 July, ahead of the 2021 Local Government Elections in October. Over this weekend all 23,146 voting stations around the country will open from 08h00 to 17h00 to assist new voters to register. Existing voters can also use the time check and, where necessary, update their registration details, the IEC said. The commission said it will also embark on a nationwide voter education and awareness campaign to encourage all eligible voters to participate in the elections scheduled to be held on 27 October 2021. “The 17 and 18 July registration weekend is the only general voter registration opportunity for voters to register and check their registration at their voting stations. However, ongoing voter registration will continue

during working hours at local IEC offices until the proclamation of the elections,” it said. Registered voters will still be able to amend their registration details through the “Click, Check, Confirm” functionality on the website of the Electoral Commission. Voters who have moved house since the last election as well as those with incorrect, incomplete or missing addresses are especially urged to update their details. “Voters visiting a voting station in person to register or update their details are reminded that they must wear a mask or appropriate face covering and observe social distancing. Hand sanitizing facilities as well as stationery will be provided at each voting station,” the IEC said. Voters are encouraged to bring along a pen even though pens will be provided and sanitized routinely, the IEC said. .

ANC wants more airtime on SABC ahead of local elections President Cyril Ramaphosa said this at the ANC’s national executive committee meeting held two weekends ago. “We will be campaigning under Covid-19 regulations, with constrained finances and in the middle of winter. We will need to be very innovative,” said Ramaphosa. “As I said to caucus the other day, we really should request to be given more time on public broadcasting platforms than we would have been given in non-pandemic times. Our ability to make direct, faceto-face contact with the people will be limited by the pandemic. “The ANC should also saturate both conventional and community media platforms with our message and propaganda. This would mean our message should be short and punchy. It must grab the people.” ANC elections head Fikile Mbalula said “I went to see them in the

last election and then we had a good discussion. It was blown out of proportion with a lot of hippo flies, that I went to intimidate people.” Mbalula said the ANC had not had discussions with the SABC because it was happy with the coverage it got in the last election. Gugu Ntuli, SABC group executive for corporate affairs and marketing, said “For all elections coverage, including the 2021 local government elections, the SABC is legally obliged to adhere to the stipulated Icasa regulations for equitable coverage. Therefore, no party-political preferential treatment will be entertained, as this is not provided for in the regulations”. Icasa chairperson Keabetswe Modimoeng said it had not been approached by any political party about increasing airtime for local government elections.

Pet Pic of the week

Kitchen delight

Jessica Loots van Bethlehem het rede om sie bietjie te pronk met haar pragtige Yorkshire Terrier, Angelique WhatsApp us your pet pictures to 073 446 2182. Gives us the name of your pet, the breed, what it loves to eat or do and your details too including the town where you reside.

Pet tip of the week Spaying/Neutering Sterilizing your pet prevents a host of health problems, including complicated pregnancies, and reduces the number of homeless animals. Spaying your kitty (removing the uterus and ovaries) greatly reduces her risk for cervical cancer, eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer, and prevents her from going into "heat." That minimizes the chance that she'll stray from home in search of a partner, and any nearby male cats will be less aggressive (and they won't spray to mark their territory, something that benefits you and your furniture). Neutering your puppy helps alleviate aggression and roaming the neighborhood, and will prevent him from getting testicular cancer. Because spaying or neutering is surgery that requires general anesthesia, your pet will likely stay overnight at the vet's office for at least one night for observation and recuperation.

BBQ glazed spatchcock chicken with crunchy-slaw Make a double batch of the BBQ sauce, store in the fridge, and use to jazz up weeknight meals. Slaw: Ingredients: ½ red cabbage, shredded BBQ sauce: 2 apples, sliced 2 cups tomato sauce 2 spring onions, sliced ½ cup white vinegar 3-4 radishes, sliced (optional) ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce 2 Tbsp mayonnaise ½ cup light brown sugar salt and milled pepper 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard flat breads for serving 2 Tbsp paprika 3 garlic cloves, chopped salt and milled pepper 1 whole bird, spatchcocked Method: Combine all the sauce ingredients in a pot. Simmer gently for about 8-10 minutes. Season well. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the chicken on a lined baking tray and season well. Coat the chicken generously with a third of the BBQ sauce and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, turn over the chicken, cover with another third of the remaining sauce, and roast for a further 15 minutes. Remove once more and turn the chicken over so that the breast side faces upwards. Coat with the remaining sauce, drizzle with butter and lemon juice, and roast for a further 15 minutes or until cooked through and golden. Combine the slaw ingredients and season well. Serve your chicken with crunchy slaw and flat breads, garnish with lemon or lime wedges, and sprinkle with fresh herbs. Cook’s note: For a healthier alternative, substitute the sour cream the slaw with plain yoghurt

Ek is 'n woordeboer. Om jou byline by 'n berig gepubliseer te sien, is lekkerder as jou gunsteling trooskos on die winter. Al sê jy wat ook al vir mense wat my naam in hul huise in ink op papier mis, jok ek vir myself as ek sê ek is okay. Dis daai gipsgesiggie wat mens opsit. Ek mis my lesers en koerant. Dít ten spyte van 'n wonderlike nuwe uitdaging as 'n sakevrou. Onlangs roep 'n senior persoon my eenkant. Hy herinner my van 'n geselssessie oor baie koppies koffie met my so paar seisoene gelede. Dít was nie my toedoen nie. Ek deel my ongeredigeerde gebed: My liefdevolle Verlosser, Drie-enige God, Baie dankie vir lewe. Hou my hand styf vas. Putting the Sport in SUV with the Suzuki Vitara Suzuki is no stranger to the world of offroading, having the utilitarian Jimny, their first 4WD model as the bona fide option for trail-hungry enthusiasts from as early as 1970. Towards the end of the millennium however, scores of consumers were beginning to show interest in more usable utility vehicles but without the bare-bones build quality of the traditional off-roaders at the time. Enter the docile first generation Vitara shape in 1988, which was poised to bridge that gap. It offered an elevated seating position, improved creature comforts, all wheel-drive and off road capability all packaged into compact and configurable dimensions. Most importantly, the Vitara was affordable and accessible to the masses. This makes it arguably one of the first SUV forerunners, embodying the definition of the segment before it ever existed. So, what has changed in over 30 years then? The car we had on test – a facelifted fourth generation 1.4 Turbo GLX AT is not a brand new release. Its underpinnings date back to 2015 but the mid cycle refresh, which debuted in 2019 has updated the iconic nameplate with updated technology and features. First thing is first, the Vitara has gravitated away from its roots (somewhat) and ditched the lone 4WD layout that made this model a success story in the late 1980’s. Its capabilities have now been more aligned with the typical city orientated SUV with the transversally laid out motor powering the front wheels while offering an accessible 185mm of ground clearance. Out of the seven derivatives offered, the only model with Allgrip (4WD) is the naturally aspirated 1.6 GLX mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The K14C Boosterjet in-line 4 turbocharged motor found in our test car is the one to have though, 103kW and 220Nm is plenty to haul the 1160kg body around. It is even enough to self induce a dash of torque steer and enable the assistance of traction control during acceleration in certain scenarios. It is the same plucky motor that

makes the Swift Sport so nimble, in case you didn’t know. Such spirited performance from the modest looking model is unexpected. So you can imagine the surprising grin of continuously putting the SUV through its paces and the drivers display yielding a handsome reward of 13.2 km/l (which equates to 7.4l/100km in normal units of measurement). Sedate driving could achieve as low as the claimed 5.8l/100km but the fun factor seems to inhibit getting anywhere near this number! This motor can be coupled to either a 6 speed manual transmission or the new automatic with the same number of cogs. Despite the solitary driving mode, the shifting seemed light and comfortable while more vivacious use of the throttle in overtaking situations warranted responsive and intuitive up and down shifts. The tactile paddles behind the steering wheel were suitably sized and the gearbox responded timeously to manual interaction too. Where the experience fell short was an apparent engine shudder when coming to a stop, alike to that of stalling. Overall though, the Turbo GLX in automatic guise provided a very comfortable driving experience which could also instill some hooliganism with the surprising torque delivery – reaffirming its purpose as a Sport Utility Vehicle. The Vitara is also well equipped when it comes to the safety department, with active and passive features like ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP and 7 airbags. The interior, while aesthetically outdated and basically arranged, is well put together and is constructed with high build quality – surpassing that of certain European rivals. The vehicle on test had almost 16 000km on the clock and there were little to no rattles in the cabin on smooth urban roads. Although an abundance of plastic textures dominated the front fascia, there were equally as many pleasant soft touch points too, boding well for mild comforts. Where I found vexation was the driver’s seating position. Designed with the Japanese domestic market in mind,

the narrow bolsters on the base of the seat found my slender behind constantly wriggling to try and get comfortable – to limited avail. Keeping true to its precursor’s legacy, the Vitara retains an elevated, upright seating position which enables abundant visibility in all directions, albeit with a diminutive rear view mirror. The rest of the interior is otherwise filled with some cool and useful tech, chief being the 7” touch display which has USB, SD card and Bluetooth functionality, standard smartphone integration also applies. An analog rev counter and speedometer dominate the dials behind the steering wheel while the driver display includes a GForce meter and power distribution graphs – Sport Utility Vehicle remember? Although equipped with a small screen, the clarity on the reverse camera made visibility when backing into parking bays much easier – especially in low light environments – impressive. Our vehicle on test was also equipped with a panoramic sunroof, which made for a warm sunny welcome on cooler autumn days but limited rear headroom for adults. The configurable boot can hold up to 375l too, which is just above average in comparison to its competitors in the subcompact crossover segment. The range includes several derivatives including our Turbo GLX 6AT, which is pricey at the top of the spectrum coming in at R426 900. There is some good news though, the naturally aspirated 1.6 GL 5MT 2WD can be had for as little as R310 900 – but don’t expect as many amenities or as much driving fun as the Turbo GLX can offer. While evolution over a 30 year period can create a product completely indistinguishable from its precursor, there are aspects of this subcompact crossover SUV that still allude to its rich heritage. While the nameplate has adapted to keep up with the times, it retains some of its pedigree sporty, adventurous flavour to suit the new era of consumers.
