WORLD’S LARGEST WIND ENERGY DEVELOPER TO EMPOWER STUDENTS

UWC celebrating 6 decades of existence. Photo: UWC File

UWC will see itself providing students from here in Northern Cape with an opportunity to complete internships at Longyuan SA’s two wind farms in De Aar.  Courtesy of IOL DE AAR: Longyuan SA has been providing renewable energy in South Africa for four years and now a subsidiary of the world’s largest wind power developer, has committed to provide students from the University of the Western Cape with educational support. The company this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UWC that will see it providing students from the Northern Cape with an opportunity to complete internships at Longyuan SA’s two wind farms here in De Aar. Longyuan SA is the wholly-owned subsidiary of China Longyuan and China Energy Corporation. Longyuan SA, with its local partner Mulilo, operates two wind projects with a combined investment of

more than R5 billion here in the Northern Cape. One of these is the largest operational wind project in the country. During the virtual ceremony, UWC’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius welcomed the new partnership. “We are grateful that Longyuan SA sees value in our institution, and is willing to invest in our students and university. We look forward to building a mutually beneficial relationship with Longyuan SA in the years to come,” Prof Pretorius said. Longyuan’s wind farms make a significant contribution not only to the power supply grid but also to employment and the local economy. This agreement, which will see Longyuan SA working closely with UWC on various initiatives including the funding of

bursaries, the provision of laptops and devices, practical training and environmental protection, forms part of the company’s substantial investment in South Africa. According to Prof Pretorius, UWC is proud of its green initiatives and of being recognised repeatedly as Africa’s greenest campus. Prof Pretorius said, “We therefore look forward to welcoming Longyuan SA to our campus when it reopens so that we can share some of our many projects that focus on creating alternative energy sources.” He added, “As a research-led university, UWC understands all too well the many challenges that our world faces. The provision of sustainable and clean energy sources is of vital importance.”

Ek, soos baie ander vind dit as ‘skreeu-snaaks’!

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

■ Francois Prinsloo Life coaching is a personal development process that builds a person’s capability, energy levels and motivation to achieve short- and/or long-term goals. These goals might be personal goals, career goals, family goals or just dreams to live a happier life. It is conducted through one-on-one interactions, either face-to-face or via the internet, and it is based on a high level of mutual trust and respect. A Life Coach guides you towards achieving your goals and identifies characteristics and qualities that drives (energise) you on the one hand while also identifying internal obstacles (things that drain your energy levels like unforgiveness, fear, anxiety, trauma, anger etc.) on the other hand. By removing as much internal obstacles as possible, you are left with more energy and less “baggage” to pursue your goals in a “lighter”, happier and healthier way. Accredited assessments might be used by the Life coach to help in identifying “energisers” and

“internal obstacles” A lady contacted me and told me that, although she is a successful and respected professional, she felt that she was a failure because she was a failure as a mother and wife. Apart from the fact that she did not feel good about herself, she also got anxiety attacks because she feared that the situation at home will get worse. A young man who works in the private sector came to see me. He is highly stressed and is very negative because he does not have a formal qualification. He dreams of becoming a senior manager, but because of his lack of a formal qualification, he believed he will never reach this goal. These two stories might sound unrelated, but in reality they have a lot in common. Both people were telling themselves lies about themselves. This created internal obstacles that prevented them from achieving their goals. Both believed the lies they are telling themselves and both of them go into a downward spiral of thinking negative and feeling miserable. The reason for this is that trauma and negative impulses sit in our bodies and central nervous system. Unless these negative impulses are processed by a professional, the individual continues to experience a flood of negative thoughts and feelings. This prevents a person from focussing on more important issues and goals. A professional Life Coach will identify and eliminate the negative aspects of people’s lives so that the person can focus on their strengths and natural abilities to achieve optimal performance and achievement. As an accredited Life Coach, I use a technique called Multi-Level Neuro Processing (MLNP) to help people to create changes in their thoughts, feelings, behaviour, trauma symptoms, stress levels, etc. This is done by helping the brain to process and integrate information in a new and different way. Once negative issues are processed, the person involved can focus on enhanced performance and a happier, healthier life. MLNP is a comprehensive brain-body process that enables you healing, growth and transformation at a dynamic and happier level.

REKORD 04

Waar gaan jy heen?

AFVAL…KONINGSKOS…OF NIE? Lekker kos bly maar net lekker. Anderste kos. So verjaar iemand. Kersielaan 1 was ons huis. Kersielaan 2 het twee Taiwanese gehuisves. Baie vriendelike vroue. Varkpens! Hy down 'n hele glas wyn soos 'n shooter. Isabel stap na die spitbraai. "A whole animal!" So verander smaak mos maar.

SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN WERE CALLED TO DONATE BREASTMILK World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies, as well as a wider push for maternal health, focusing on good nutrition, poverty reduction and food security. The event is organised every year by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network that aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world. Along the way, it works with the World Health Organization and UNICEF to get its aid to the right people in the right communities. World Breastfeeding Week begins each year on the 1st of August and runs right through until the 7th, but the South African Health Department has recently joined in and

invited women to donate breastmilk. Breastfeeding women were called to donate their breastmilk to help feed preterm babies as their mothers are often not yet producing milk. Gauteng alone has four breastmilk banks and they are as follows: Sebokeng Regional Hospital: 079 513 5903, Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital: 076 772 4696, Steve Biko Academic Hospital: 084 587 5457 and Leratong Regional Hospital: 083 306 4101. According to the health department, babies that were breastfed received optimal nutrition, and there are lifetime health benefits for the children. The department further added that fully grown adults who were breastfed as babies may have a lower risk of obesity, diabetes mellitus and heart disease.

99 Days to Corolla Cross Toyota South Africa

REKORD 09 ■ DANIE CRONJÈ

■ Corné van Noordwyk Corolla Cross Concept The Corolla has continued to evolve in line with the needs of the times and of the regions it is sold in. By adding a new model to the Corolla series to suit the growing demand of SUVs, the enhanced Corolla lineup enables customers to select the model that better suits their diverse lifestyles and life stages. With "Corolla Meets SUV" being the key phrase for the development of the Corolla Cross, the model was designed as a new type of SUV that combines all the key Corolla credentials with utility - in a manner that exceeds customer expectations. The TNGA platform (GA-C) has enabled the Corolla Cross to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride, and outstanding quietness. In addition to its exceptional comfort, the Corolla Cross provides a spacious cabin, easy entry into and exit from the car, class-leading luggage space suitable for all scenarios, and safety equipment inherited from the Corolla series. In this way, the new model realizes comfort, utility, and peace of mind for customers. The Corolla Cross will slot in above the C-HR and below the RAV4 models, both in terms of size and powertrain configuration. Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) The benefits of the TNGA platform have already been showcased in the Prius, C-HR and E210 Corolla (sedan and hatch) models. TNGA provides excellent ride quality, without compromising agility and driver feedback - resulting in a car that 'just feels right'. Occupants are also rewarded with a spacious cabin that offers superb visibility with a stylish yet highly-ergonomic interior design. Another hallmark of the TNGA platform is the reduction of NVH-levels (Noise Vibration Harshness), thereby offering driver and passengers a quiet, comfortable and smooth ride. Exterior Styling The Corolla Cross fuses the striking design language of the Corolla Sedan and Hatch models with a SUV-shape to provide a harmonious design. Large, elongated headlamps flank a prominent trapezoidal radiator grille, which is further accentuated by the broad 'upswept' lower bumper. Deep vertical design lines on the outer edges of the bumper, help create a 'sturdy' frontal view. The side profile features noticeable fender flares, creating a sense of width, and complementing the sleek glass house and C-pillar trim. The rear employs large elliptical taillamps with trapezoidal detailing and crease lines - to provide a sleek and sophisticated look. Buyers of the Corolla Cross will also be able to customize their vehicle with an assortment of exterior accessory packages - catering to everything from rugged, adventure-themed variants, to sporty urban enhancements. 50 Million Corolla's Sold The introduction of a Corolla SUV fittingly coincides with a remarkable landmark in the model's history. The humble Corolla nameplate is set to achieve 50 million global sales in 2021 - firmly cementing it as the world's best-selling car. The 10-million mark was eclipsed in 1983 with the model doubling sales to 20- million by 1994. Thirty million was achieved by 2005 with the magical 40-million milestone reached in 2012. Corolla is sold in over 150 countries and remains the top-selling model in many markets across the world. Therefore, a special congratulatory message must go out to Corolla for providing fun, affordable and dependable mobility to millions of global citizens. PS: International images shown - local specifications and visuals may differ.

Corolla Lineage The Corolla nameplate needs no introduction - first launched in November of 1966, it marked the start of great things, not only for Toyota but Japanese automakers as a whole, as Japan experienced a period of rapid economic advancement, population growth and societal revolution. Named after the ring of petals on the central part of a flower, this was Toyota's first mainstream compact car. Featuring a compact yet sporty body shape and 1100cc four-cylinder engine, the Corolla found favour from Day one. This model along with the larger second-generation 'E20' went on to become global success stories, drawing in buyers across the globe. The second-generation Corolla also introduced additional body shapes offering buyers a two-door coupe and four-door van - in addition to the two- and four-door sedans of the pioneering 'E10'. The third-generation E30 grew once again, now adding liftback and fastback versions for a total of five body shapes. This was the first model sold (and produced) in South Africa, kicking off Mzansi's love affair with the compact sedan in 1975. The 'boxy' fourth-generation E70 model offered seven body configurations (the most in the brand's history) with engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.8-litres. This generation helped Corolla clinch 10 million global sales in March of 1983 and remains a firm favourite with collectors and Toyota fans to date, affectionately referred to as a 'Baby Cressida'. The fifth-generation brought a significant change with the switch to a front-wheel-drive platform and in South Africa introduced the Corolla hatchback badged as the Corolla Conquest. This model joined the familiar sedan alongside a liftback version (called Corolla Avante). The fifth-generation model also introduced the famed RSi and GLi Twincam-16 names on local soil and scooped the inaugural SA Car of the Year (COTY) title in 1986. This was followed by the sixth-generation E90 cars in both Corolla and Conquest forms. These models introduced a more upmarket feel to the Corolla range with the Executive and GLS trim levels - and offered a wide range of engines. In South Africa this model remained in production despite the seventh-generation E100 cars being sold overseas. The next 'local' Corolla was the E110, which grew in size and particularly interior space. The bonnet of this generation also housed the famed 20-valve 4AGE engine in RSi format - earning cult status amongst petrolheads. The year 2000 saw the debut of the E120 series of cars and the hatchback variant now carried the RunX badge on its rear flanks. The ninthgeneration Corolla and RunX pairing employed a completely different design language and moved Corolla into a more luxury-oriented arena while the RunX carried the sporty flag by including a high-power RSi variant. These models achieved considerable sales success on local shores. In 2006 the Prospecton Plant switched over to the 140-series of Corolla and a new global direction saw the 'divorce' of the hatchback Corolla variant, as it was renamed Auris and sold as a stand-alone model. This 10th-generation sedan would go on to become the Corolla Quest in SA, when the 11th-generation went on to replace it in 2014. Uniquely, our Durban-based plant thus produced both E140 and E180-series in the factory simultaneously. The 12-th generation Corolla slotted into the market in 2019, featuring a bold new design and Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, it also marked the return of the hatchback variant. For the first time in SA, the hatch model was badged simply as Corolla (without a sub-name). This in turn prompted the switch to the 11-th generation platform for the Corolla Quest in 2020, while the Corolla sedan and hatchback models were imported for the first time since 1975.

After two seasons of good rainfall across the country, current lower interest rates have prompted the replacement and replenishment of agricultural machinery and equipment. According to Paul Makube, agricultural economist, the availability of the relatively cheaper credit, the record-high grain and oilseed prices that boosted farmers’ revenues, underpinned the 33% year-on-year (y/y) increase in total machinery sales to 3 539 units during the first half of 2021. According to sales statistics released by the South African Agricultural Machinery Association (SAAMA), June tractor sales of 633 units was an almost 43% increase on the 444 units sold in June last year, while combine harvester sales increase by 13 units to 30, compared with the 17 units sold in

June last year. On a year-to-date basis, combine harvester sales stood at 154 units, almost 32% up on last year, while tractors sales were at 3 385 units, up 27% during the first six months of the year compared with the corresponding period last year. Wandile Sihlobo, the chief economist at Agbiz, said in a recent newsletter that with the 2020/2021 summer grains and oilseeds season drawing to a close, farmers’ focus would increasingly shift to the 2021/2022 production season, which would commence in October. Sihlobo added that the Agbiz/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index, which measured the business sentiment among agribusinesses and major farming entities, reached a record high of 75 points in the second quarter of this year, up from 64 in quarter one of 2021.

MEIRINGSKLOOF NATURE PARK

Meiringskloof is situated in the Eastern Free State, and nature lovers are in for a treat when they visit this magnificent area… Just 1.7km from Fouriesburg, the sandstone cliffs with thick indigenous bush entice many birds to make this area their home – about 140 different bird species frequent this area though the year. Accommodation at Meiringskloof Nature Park is provided in self-catering sandstone chalets as well as lovely caravan and camping facilities. To preserve the natural surroundings only a few chalets and caravan and camping sites have been developed. Meiringskloof offers excellent hikes in beautiful surroundings where you can see small waterfalls in season, large overhangs and naturally formed water tunnels. You will also find a swimming pool to cool down in or relax next to and tan. Horse riding and abseiling are available at extra cost. The nature park caters to a number of people who stay there and make trips into Lesotho, which is just 11km away, to take a day trip to AfriSki to ski and snowboard in winter; or travel to the Katse Dam high up in the mountains of Lesotho for the day. Meiringskloof works well for family reunions or company weekends away as each family or group can stay in their own separate chalet and use the Lapa with or without kitchen for communal meals. Meiringskloof Nature Park is all about superb Free State selfcatering accommodation, and once you have experienced it you will certainly want to book in advance next time to ensure you get a place! For those who enjoy a bit of history, Meiringskloof, now a welldeveloped nature resort, has a rich history dating back to the early 1930s. The name Meiringskloof originates from Mr J H Meiring who was the mayor of Fouriesburg from 1925 to 1931. In those early years of Fouriesburg’s history, not much provision was made for water, with the inhabitants of the town having to fetch their own water from a bore-hole or from a fountain southwest of the town. As the need for water grew, a pipe was installed at a fountain on the side of Ventersberg that led into a dam from which the town then got its water. In the late 1940s, the municipality… (continue on Page 12)

the farm Glen Skye, previously known as Meiringen, so that the water from Meiringskloof could supplement the town’s growing need. The farm was later sold again, but a part of Ventersberg, as well as Meiringskloof was kept aside as a nature reserve. This area, in which the current resort is located, was the municipal water works from roughly 1940 to 1973. The current shop was the pump station, and the area behind it was the water filtration plant with a storeroom off to the side. The grass bank opposite the shop was the dam wall to the town’s water supply. In 1973, with the town boasting a much larger population, a new dam had to be constructed. The old waterworks and dam were converted into a picnic area, and a small ablutions facility was constructed. The picnic area used to be where camp sites 1 to 16 are now located, and there was indigenous bush and a small quarry where the swimming pool is now located. In the early 1980s, Ds J P Le Roux, a retired missionary minister, settled in the town of Fouriesburg and became an active member of the community. His son-in-law and daughter, Wynand and Susan Pretorius, decided to develop the picnic area into a caravan park and entered into discussions with the municipality. At first the area was rented from the municipality but was finally purchased in 1987. In 1988, Ds J P Le Roux, fondly known as ‘Oom Japie’ by the townsfolk and early visitors to Meiringskloof, became the first manager of Meiringskloof and started work on the park as we know it today. The first chalet to be occupied in Meiringskloof was Chalet number 2, Patrys, in 1988 – this was the old ablutions block for the picnic site which was renovated. The main hiking trail to the Boesmangrot and Holkrans were part of the original reserve. The development of a five-day hiking trail, the Brandwater Hiking Trail, resulted in the construction of the chain ladder still used today to climb up the side of the cliff at the top of the trail. Sadly, this popular trail was closed in 2002. The various hiking trails were constructed by a team led by Ds. J. P. Le Roux. He and his team were responsible for much of the construction of the current Meiringskloof. The rest of the hiking trails were finished in late 2000, with chalets having been added through the years until August 2007 which saw the completion and occupation of the most recent chalet, Chalet 8. Plans for the future include the revamping of the swimming pool, building private camping ablutions and the upgrading of some of the older chalets and the Swallow’s Nest and the possible addition of two more chalets T:+27 (0)58 223 0067 F:+27 (0)86 513 193 W: www.meiringskloof.co.za

ESTIVAN BARNARD… Voel jy soos ‘n plaaslike ‘celebrity’? Nee! Daar is mense wat my erken. Hulle groet my op my naam, selfs al weet ek nie wie hulle is nie, maar dan neem ek aan hulle het my op Facebook gesien. Dink jy dat

jou konsep volhoubaar is of is daar iets nuut waaraan jy reeds werk? Facebook: Die ‘Get To Know’ Media Channel. Bel my persoonlik gerus: 079 479 3153

South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma, jailed for contempt of court last month, has been admitted to a hospital outside prison for “medical observation”, according to officials. “Everyone who is detained, including every sentenced prisoner, has the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including … medical treatment,” the Department of Correctional Services said in a statement on Friday last week. No reason was given for the hospitalization on Friday, apart from that it was prompted by “a routine observation”. The department added that as a former president, Zuma’s healthcare needs required the involvement of the South African Military Health Service. Zuma’s foundation, while confirming that he was in hospital, said it was for his annual routine medical check-up. “No need to be alarmed, … yet,” the foundation said in a Twitter post. The admission came less than a week before the 79-year-old is due to attend the resumption of a long-running corruption trial. The August 10 hearing will include a plea to drop 16 charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering against him related to the 1999 purchase of fighter jets, patrol boats and equipment from five European arms firms when he was deputy president. He is accused of taking bribes from one of the firms, French defence giant Thales, which has been charged with corruption and money laundering. Zuma has pleaded not guilty and maintains he is the victim of a politically motivated witch-hunt by his opponents.

SCIENCE

MORE WOMEN, THAN EVER, ARE STARTING CAREERS IN SCIENCE

Women are more likely to start a research career now than they were 20 years ago, longitudinal study revealed. However, they are less likely to continue their academic careers than are their male contemporaries, and in general publish fewer papers. Ludo Waltman, a quantitative scientist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, and his colleagues took a deep dive into the huge Scopus citation and abstract database, hosted

by Elsevier. They looked at the publication careers of some six million researchers globally who had authored at least three papers between 1996 and 2018. The team posted its findings on the preprint server arXiv.org1. The authors found that the proportion of women starting a career in science rose over time. In 2000, 33% of researchers starting their publishing career were women; that grew to 40% in recent years (see ‘Gender

gap’). Waltman said that although the results are not surprising, it’s important that we now have concrete statistics confirming the trend for many countries and scientific disciplines. In the physical sciences, mathematics and engineering, male authors still made up a much higher proportion of authors than did women, even in more recent years. Waltman and his team took their work further by tracking the researchers’ publication records to see whether they continued authoring scientific papers — a proxy for continuing a career in science. They discovered that women were less likely to continue publishing papers than were men, whatever year they began their careers.
