RURAL AREAS PRIORITIZED FOR COVID-19 VACCINATION

Minister Kubayi briefing media at Emthanjeni hospital

❑ Courtesy of SABC News DE AAR: The acting South African Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, recently assured South Africans that they are prioritizing rural and far-flung areas around the country for COVID-19 vaccinations. Kubayi visited the Emthanjeni hospital here in De Aar, in the Northern Cape, to assess the province’s management of COVID-19 and its vaccine rollout. After a lengthy briefing, Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi addressed the media and said that they are prioritizing all areas in the country to be vaccinated. Kubayi said that their aim is for the residents here in the Northern Cape’s to be the first in the country to be fully vaccinated. Patients at

the hospital raised their grievances with the minister regarding the poor services they were getting from the staff at the Emthanjeni Hospital. 70-year-old Suzan Johnson shared her experience with the minister. “My experience was very bad because when I came here I was very sick and when I got home I was even worse because I fell here at the hospital and my body was bruised, I had to heal by myself at home,” Johnson said. Last month, the family of 75-year-old Willemse Van Syfer claimed that he died due to neglect. Van Syfer was hospitalized with COVID-19 complications and the family said that he did not receive proper medical care. The family alleged that no nurses were

available to assist the pensioner and no doctor was in sight following his admission. This prompted the Northern Cape Health Department to launch an investigation into alleged patient neglect. The Northern Cape Health MEC, Maruping Lekwene, said that the matter has been reported to the police and the departmental investigation continues. Minister Kubayi said that every province has a responsibility to be creative for the vaccine rollout to continue, adding that drive-by vaccine programmes are yielding fruitful results. She further added that they will assist the Northern Cape to boost the staff compliment for residents to be vaccinated.

❑ Courtesy of IOL DE AAR: 18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day but as South Africans, we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July, which is meant to honour the great legacy of Mandela and his values through community services and volunteering. Longyuan Mulilo, an Independent Power Producer (IPP), owns and operates two wind power projects here in De Aar, in the Northern Cape. The company honoured the memory of Madiba through investments into the education of youth through their Bursary program and the support to early childhood development centres in local communities. They assist with helping community old age homes to protect the dignity of elders, supporting small businesses around their projects to help grow employment opportunities, and expanding access to primary healthcare with mobile health clinics. According to the local

municipality, they are so blessed to have Longyuan Mulilo Wind Projects as a social partner over the previous years and also thanked Longyuan Mulilo for all their effort and continuous support in the community. Longyuan Mulilo has contributed around R150 000 to beneficiaries, through providing equipment, upgrading facilities, purchasing soccer kits, etc., in celebration of Mandela Month. There is still much work to do to address the aftermath of this month’s events and also to address the underlying socioeconomic issues that persist across our country. Longyuan Mulilo is committed to continuing to undertake to the best of their ability to make a positive difference in the communities in which they operate. Further still, they encourage South Africans across the country to adopt the principle that they have at Longyuan Mulilo, which is to endeavour to conduct themselves as though every month is Madiba month.

WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

■ Francois Prinsloo Life coaching is a personal development process that builds a person’s capability, energy levels and motivation to achieve short- and/or long-term goals. These goals might be personal goals, career goals, family goals or just dreams to live a happier life. It is conducted through one-on-one interactions, either face-to-face or via the internet, and it is based on a high level of mutual trust and respect. A Life Coach guides you towards achieving your goals and identifies characteristics and qualities that drives (energise) you on the one hand while also identifying internal obstacles (things that drain your energy levels like unforgiveness, fear, anxiety, trauma, anger etc.) on the other hand. By removing as much internal obstacles as possible, you are left with more energy and less “baggage” to pursue your goals in a “lighter”, happier and healthier way. Accredited assessments might be used by the Life coach to help in identifying “energisers” and

“internal obstacles” A lady contacted me and told me that, although she is a successful and respected professional, she felt that she was a failure because she was a failure as a mother and wife. Apart from the fact that she did not feel good about herself, she also got anxiety attacks because she feared that the situation at home will get worse. A young man who works in the private sector came to see me. He is highly stressed and is very negative because he does not have a formal qualification. He dreams of becoming a senior manager, but because of his lack of a formal qualification, he believed he will never reach this goal. These two stories might sound unrelated, but in reality they have a lot in common. Both people were telling themselves lies about themselves. This created internal obstacles that prevented them from achieving their goals. Both believed the lies they are telling themselves and both of them go into a downward spiral of thinking negative and feeling miserable. The reason for this is that trauma and negative impulses sit in our bodies and central nervous system. Unless these negative impulses are processed by a professional, the individual continues to experience a flood of negative thoughts and feelings. This prevents a person from focussing on more important issues and goals. A professional Life Coach will identify and eliminate the negative aspects of people’s lives so that the person can focus on their strengths and natural abilities to achieve optimal performance and achievement. As an accredited Life Coach, I use a technique called Multi-Level Neuro Processing (MLNP) to help people to create changes in their thoughts, feelings, behaviour, trauma symptoms, stress levels, etc. This is done by helping the brain to process and integrate information in a new and different way. Once negative issues are processed, the person involved can focus on enhanced performance and a happier, healthier life. MLNP is a comprehensive brain-body process that enables you healing, growth and transformation at a dynamic and happier level.

Maak gerus staat daarop

Net ‘n oomblik… ■ THARINE HURTER

“MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS!” Dara se ete was die barmhartige Indiërgesin se driehoekiekoeliekoekies (samoesas). Hy het die resep gekry. Terug by die stukkende kar. Memories are made of this!

HUAWEI MateBook D 15i3

The Huawei’s latest development makes working from home affordable. While a new notebook could set you back quite a bit, Huawei has some affordable options, with the latest being the MateBook D 15 i3. The MateBook D 15 i3 delivers a full spectrum of features that those working from home need. Starting with the Full View display, a large 15.6" Full HD (1920x1080) screen is front and centre thanks to an impressive 87 percent screen-to-body ratio. The slim bezels are matched by an equally elegant metal chassis that is lightweight at 1.53kg. The large screen real estate also lends itself to the collaboration tools that Huawei has integrated into the ecosystem of the MateBook range, including the ability to share content from one Huawei device to another seamlessly and without cables thanks to Huawei Share. Other handy tools include the power button with integrated fingerprint sensor, adding a layer of security to the D 15 i3 and ensuring that prying eyes don't get access to your device.

It was first unveiled by Bajaj Auto at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. Bajaj Auto is best known for scooters and three-wheel auto-rickshaws, but in 2010, Bajaj announced that they would be collaborating with Nissan and Renault to develop a low-cost car, and as a result the Qute was born. According to Bajaj, the Qute is the first Indian-built quadricycle to meet the European quadricycle norms and get the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval certification, awarded by RDW Netherlands. The rear-engine Bajaj Qute is 2752 mm long, 1312 mm wide, and 1652mm tall. It tips the scales at a lithe 400 kg. It seats one driver and three passengers, and offers 20 kilograms’ worth of storage inside the bonnet. If fitted with roof rails and a carrier, it can carry an additional 40 kg. Altogether, interior storage is rated at 191 litres, if you include the glove box, door binnacles, and additional space under the seats. Its top speed is a mere 70km per hour. It is powered by a four-stroke, singlecylinder engine of only 217 cc, and its output is up to 9.7 kW and 18.9 Nm of torque for the petrol models. Power is

sent to the wheels via a five-speed gearbox. As for safety, Bajaj is confident that the Qute’s stringent testing counts for something: "The Qute has been rigorously tested on multiple parameters, terrain and weather conditions in India. From the hot deserts of Rajasthan to the cold altitudes of the Himalayas, from rural roads to city traffic, Qute has been put through over 3.2 million km of testing. These tests check for structural durability, suspension, performance, handling, efficiency and all forms of abuse. Qute is made at a state-of-theart assembly plant that uses the latest robotics & automation for precision manufacturing. The entire process is supervised and quality checked by expert engineers," the company claims. Bajaj received an enormous amount of enquiries for the Qute after rumours were circulated that it costs only R4 500 once-off or R150 per month. This was not true at all; Bajaj announced on Twitter that the offer price for the Qute is R75 000. Delays in fertiliser deliveries expected According to the CEO of the Fertilizer Association of South Africa (FERTASA), Dr Pieter Haumann, the cyber-attack on Transnet’s IT systems along with the destruction caused by the recent civil unrest could severely affect the availability of fertilizer for the current crop season. Since it was relatively early in the season, Haumann advised farmers to plan for a delay in deliveries of at least four weeks, and further urged them to place orders as soon as possible to ensure that they had buffer stocks of these products at planting time. “Many companies and their clients have been postponing fertilizer orders in the hope that fertilizer prices [could] fall before planting time. Most of these consumers will have realised that this will probably not happen due to the events [mentioned],” Haumann told Farmer’s Weekly. Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, announced in a statement released on Wednesday, 28 July that all South African harbours were fully operational again. “Transnet has managed to

fully restore operations at the ports, which enables the country’s supply chain and logistics system to resume normal operations. The return to operations is good news for the economy, as the Transnet ports and rail system are the backbone of the economy,” he said. According to Gordhan, Transnet Port Terminals were facilitating the evacuation of urgent containers for the agricultural, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and the automotive sectors. Gordhan said that the entity was also accelerating the work on strengthening the weaknesses identified in the IT environment. “The force majeure in place has been put under review to lift it in the coming days,” Gordhan said. A force majeure is a common clause in contracts, which frees parties involved from liability or obligation when an extraordinary, uncontrollable event or circumstance occurs. Haumann said that although the force majeure had been declared, this would only have an impact on ships already at berths.
