FUOCO NERO: MATERIA E STRUTTURA ATTORNO E DOPO BURRI

Circa 40 anni fa, il Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione dell’Università di Parma ricevette in dono un importante ‘Cellotex’ creato nel 1975 da Alberto Burri. In occasione del centenario della nascita dell’artista (1915-1995), il CSAC ha invitato alcuni celebri pittori, scultori e fotografi a esporre almeno un’opera riconducibile alla ricerca di Burri. Tra questi, hanno accolto l’invito Mimmo Paladino, Luca Pignatelli, Marcello Jori, Alberto Ghinzani, Giuseppe Maraniello, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Emilio Isgrò, Medhat Shafik, Franco Guerzoni, Davide Benati, Enzo Esposito, Gianluigi Colin, William Xerra e altri ancora. Agli artisti è stato anche chiesto di illustrare le ragioni per cui l’opera donata si collegava alla ricerca di Burri. Dopodiché, si sono individuati due percorsi, quello della ricerca sulla materia e quello dell’articolazione delle strutture, in base ai quali si è proceduto attingendo alle raccolte dello CSAC e chiamando in causa altre opere e autori di rilievo nazionale e internazionale. Tra i lavori fotografici, assumono una valenza emblematica le immagini di Aurelio Amendola che hanno suggerito il titolo della mostra: Burri che crea col fuoco una “Plastica” a confronto col “nero” del “Cellotex” dello CSAC. Curata da Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, la mostra propone oltre settanta dipinti e altrettante fotografie e ancora un gruppo di opere grafiche, per un totale di 172 pezzi. Il catalogo è edito da Skira. BLACK FIRE: MATTER AND STRUCTUREAROUND AND AFTER BURRI About 40 years ago, the Communication Center of Studies and Archive of the Università di Parma received “Cellotex”, created in 1975 by Alberto Burri. On the occasion of the centenary of his birth (1915-1995), the CSAC invited famous painters, sculptors and photographers to exhibit at least a work linkable to Burri. Amongst these, Mimmo Paladino, Luca Pignatelli, Marcello Jori, Alberto Ghinzani, Giuseppe Maraniello, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Emilio Isgrò, Medhat Shafik, Franco Guerzoni, Davide Benati, Enzo Esposito, Gianluigi Colin, William Xerra and many 8 others. The artists have been asked to illustrate the reasons why their work could be linked to Burri. Thereafter, two courses have been identified, the research on the matter and the organization of structures, according to which other internationally wellknown artists have been called. Among photographic works, images by Aurelio Amendola has particular relevance,
they indeed inspired the title of the exhibition: Burri creating with fire a “Plastic” confronted with the “black” of the CSAC “Cellotex”. Curated by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, the exhibit offers more than seventy paintings and as many photographs and again a group of graphic works, for an overall amount of 172 pieces. Nato nel 1970 a Charleston, in South Carolina, Frank Shepard Fairey, affermatosi sulla scena artistica con lo pseudonimo di Obey, è stato per così dire un anticipatore della socialità virale nell’era di Internet, conferendo alla forma espressiva da lui prescelta, la Street art, una chiara impronta comunicativa e generando con le sue opere una sorta di ‘marketing guerrilla’ transmediale, di volta in volta orientata sui temi della vita urbana, del pacifismo, del razzismo, della difesa dell’ambiente, della propaganda e del controllo nella società contemporanea. La sua popolarità si è diffusa a partire dal lontano 1989, quando ideò la campagna “André the Giant Has a Posse”, disseminando i muri della sua città con adesivi che ritraevano il volto del celebre wrestler André the Giant allo scopo di fare riflettere i suoi concittadini sul loro rapporto con l’ambiente urbano. Tuttavia, occorrerà attendere fino al 2008 per la consacrazione internazionale di questo artista. In quell’anno infatti, Obey realizza il manifesto “Hope” in cui appare il volto stilizzato di Barack Obama, candidato alla presidenza degli USA. Definito dal critico del New Yorker Peter Schjeldahl, “la più efficace illustrazione politica americana dai tempi dello Zio Sam”, il ritratto in quadricromia di Barack Obama è divenuto un’icona pop del nostro tempo. A Shepard Fairey alias Obey, il PAN - Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli dedica oggi una mostra, curata da Massimo Sgroi, in cui si ripercorre la sua carriera raccontata in 90 opere, alcune delle quali visibili per la prima volta. Nonostante la lunga e fervida militanza all’interno della Staatliches Bauhaus, prima a Weimar e poi a Dessau, accanto a figure di spicco quali Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky e Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943) non ha mai raggiunto la notorietà dei colleghi. Pittore, scultore, coreografo, costumista e scenografo, ha forse scontato il fatto che la sua “visione di un mondo nuovo” oscillasse fra i poli, apparentemente inconciliabili, di un’ispirazione metafisicoreligiosa e di un rinnovamento profondo, animato dalla fede nella tecnologia e nel progresso. Pittore esordiente a Berlino, negli anni Dieci del XX secolo, Schlemmer entra a far parte del gruppo di artisti raccolti sotto le insegne della galleria “Sturm” di Herwarth Walden. Qui conosce Willi Baumeister, con il quale firma nel 1914 una grande pittura murale esposta a Colonia alla mostra del Werkbund. Nel 1921 viene chiamato alla Bauhaus da Gropius, dove dirige vari laboratori di scultura, scenografia e pittura murale. Nel 1924 presenta con successo il celebre balletto “Triadisches Ballett” al Deutsches Nationaltheater di Weimar. Nel 1933, con l’avvento del nazismo la sua arte viene definita ‘degenerata’, interdetto dall’insegnamento si trasferisce in Svizzera assieme a Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Tornato in Germania, realizza le sue ultime opere per committenti privati, prima di spegnersi a Baden-Baden nel 1943. Oggi, a distanza di quarant’anni dall’ultima retrospettiva, la Staatsgalerie di Stoccarda – la sua città natale – gli dedica una grande mostra, curata da Ina Conze, che ne illustra il percorso creativo attraverso 270 opere tra dipinti, acquerelli, disegni, sculture, fotografie e costumi originali, dagli esordi cubisti fino all’approdo ad un purismo d’impronta classica. Despite the long and fervid militancy inside the Staatliches Bauhaus, first in Weimar and then in Dessau, next to prominent names such as Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer (18881943)never reached the notoriety of his colleagues. Painter, sculptor, choreograph, designer and scenographer, he probably paid that his “visions of a new world” oscillated between the apparently incompatible poles of metaphysicalreligious inspiration and a deep renovation, animated by faith in technology and progress. Debuting painter in Berlin, during the first decade of XX century, Schlemmer joins the group of artists grouped under the name of the “Sturn” gallery by Herwarth Walden. Here he meets Willi Baumeister, with whom he signs in 1914 a great mural paint exhibited in Cologne at the Werkbund exhibition. In 1921 he is called at the Bauhaus by Gropius, where he manages different workshops of sculpture, scenography and mural painting. In 1924 he successfully presents the well-known “Triadisches Ballet” at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar. In 1933, with the arrival of Nazism, his art is considered “degenerated”, he was interdicted as a professor and he moves to Switzerland together with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Once back in Germany, he realizes his last works for private customers, before passing away in Baden-Baden in 1943. Now, forty

OSKAR SCHLEMMER: VISIONS OF A NEW WORLD

Born in 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina, Frank Shepard Fairey, better known as Obey in the artistic scenery, has been a forecaster of the viral sociality in the Internet era, giving Street Art, the artistic expression he chose, a clear communicative imprint and generating a sort of trans-media “marketing guerrilla”, every time oriented towards topics of urban life, pacifism, racism, environment, propaganda and control of the contemporary society. His popularity spread starting from 1989 when he created the campaign “André the Giant Has a Posse”, filling walls with stickers portraying the face of the famous wrestler André the Giant aiming to make citizens reflect on their relation with the environment. But his international acknowledge will only happen in 2008. In that year Obey indeed realizes the “Hope” manifesto where the stylized face of Barack Obama is portrayed. Defined by the New Yorker critic Peter Schjeldhal “the most efficient political illustration in America since Zio Sam”, the four-color portrait of Barack Obama became a pop icon of our time. To Shepard Fairey, alias Obey, the PAN – Palazzo delle Arti in Naples dedicates an exhibit, curated by Massimo Sgroi, where the career of the artist is told through 90 works, some of them in preview. B.ART: A TORINO L’ARTE VA IN BARRIERA L’arte come strumento per riqualificare il degrado urbano. È questa una delle azioni realizzate dalla città di Torino, nell’ambito del Programma integrato di sviluppo urbano, coordinato dal Comitato Urban. Affidato alla Fondazione Contrada Torino Onlus, B.ART - Arte in Barriera – è un progetto ideato per recuperare l’ambiente costruito del quartiere di BdM (Barriera di Milano), servendosi di quei valori, propri dell’arte pubblica, quali l’immediata riconoscibilità del messaggio artistico e la piena condivisione della comunità di appartenenza. Ed è stata la concertazione tra istituzioni pubbliche e gli stessi cittadini del quartiere il punto di forza dell’intera iniziativa; che, attraverso un bando internazionale rivolto ad artisti, designer e graphic designer, ha chiesto ai partecipanti di cimentarsi sulla proposta di un unico concept da declinare su tredici facciate cieche - nove di proprietà privata e quattro pubbliche -, messe a loro disposizione, e anche su oggetti d’uso comune da prototipare. Una superficie totale di oltre duemila metri quadrati, ben rappresentativa della realtà edificata in periferia, che è stata la tela su cui è intervenuto Francesco Giorgino, in arte Millo, vincitore del concorso. Il giovane artista italiano ha lavorato su pareti appositamente preparate da un’impresa accreditata. B.ART, in tutte le sue fasi, è stato documentato con fotografie e riprese video che hanno contribuito alla realizzazione di un docufilm, presentato in occasione dell’inaugurazione della mostra delle opere selezionate, arricchita dalla pubblicazione di un catalogo che racconta le finalità del progetto, nei suoi aspetti più partecipati, e illustra tutte le proposte pervenute (foto: Alice Massano). B.ART: IN TURIN ART GOES TO THE BARRIER 10 Art as the instrument to renovate the
urban decay. This is one of the actions realized by the city of Turin, inside the integrated Program of urban development, coordinated by the Urban Committee. Entrusted to the Fondazione Contrada Torino Onlus, B.ART – Arte in Barriera – is a project created to recover the environment of the BdM district (Barriera di Milano), using those values
of the public art, like the immediate awareness of the artistic message and the complete sharing of the community. The concentration between public institutions and the same citizens of the district has been the strength of the initiative; through an international contest for artists, designers and graphic designers, participants have been asked to create a single concept to be adapted on thirteen blind façades – nine of private property and four public ones -, and on common objects to be prototyped. An overall surface of more than two thousand square meters, representative of the suburbs reality, which has been the canvas on which Francesco Giorgino, in art Millo, intervened winning the contest. The young Italian artist worked on walls specifically created by a qualified company. B.ART, in all its phases, has been documented with photographs and videos which contributed to the realization of a documovie, presented on the occasion of the exhibition opening, embellished with the publication of a catalogue telling the aims of the projects and illustrating all the different proposals. A TO Z Isay Weinfeld è un artista a tuttotondo, è tra i più ricercati architetti brasiliani contemporanei, ma ha anche grandi doti in altri settori, dalla scenografia all’arredamento fino al campo della regia, poiché come lo stesso Weinfeld ha dichiarato, egli vede l’architettura nel suo insieme. Nel febbraio 2014, dopo aver vinto un concorso di architettura con un progetto per il sito di Eislaufverein a Vienna si guadagna il centro della scena, motivo per cui il museo viennese Architekturzentrum Wien organizza una mostra che, attraverso i suo lavori presenta al pubblico il suo stile architettonico sensibile, elegante e moderno, sempre con il personale timbro brasiliano. ‘A to Z. The World of Isay Weinfeld’ illustra la filosofia di questo famoso architetto in un modo trasversale: attraverso una selezione multidisciplinare dei suoi lavori che vanno da oggetti di design (Poltrona Isay), dai progetti per gli interni di negozi, ristoranti (Forneria San Paolo e Livraria da Vila)) e case unifamiliari (Casa Yucatan) fino ai progetti di edifici residenziali e per uffici (Edifício 360°, 2009 e Edifício Oka). Come film-maker, Weinfeld attribuisce particolare importanza in tutti i suoi progetti all’elemento narrativo e nella concezione di questa mostra trasporta il visitatore con sé in un viaggio attraverso l’universo della sua creatività. Isay Weinfeld is an all-round artist, he is one of the most wanted contemporary Brazilian architects, but he also has great skills in other fields, from scenography to furniture and direction, for the same Weinfeld declared, he sees architecture in its whole. In February 2014, after having won an architectural contest with a project for the Eislaufverein site in Wien, he grabs the spotlight, the reason why the Viennese Architekturzentrum Wien museum organizes an exhibit which, through its works presents a sensitive, elegant and modern architectural style, always with the personal Brazilian mark. ‘A to Z. The World of Isay Weinfeld’ illustrates the philosophy of this famous architect in cross-sectional way: through a multidisciplinary selection of his wor-
ks spacing from design pieces (Poltrona Isay), interior design for shops, restaurants (Forneria San Paolo and Livraria da Vila) and single family houses (Casa Yucatan) to the design of residential buildings and offices (Edifício 360°, 2009

BASICS CONTEMPLANDO Uno sguardo puntato verso l’Asia e la Cina. Aedes presenta con l’architetto Zhang Ke di Pechino, uno dei protagonisti più promettenti nel mondo asiatico, una mostra che illustra la metodologia e le opere di ZAO/Standardarchitecture, fondato nel 2001 dall’architetto cinese. Troviamo una grande varietà di progetti tra gli interventi a piccola scala o a grande scala come musei o progetti legati al turismo nella zona del Tibet. In ogni lavoro si vede la volontà di collegare la cultura tradizionale a quella contemporanea in un’alternanza tra modernità e rispetto per i valori locali. La prima parte della mostra si focalizza sugli interventi a Beijing, tra i tanti la conservazione del City Wall che rappresenta la stratificazione del tempo. Poi il progetto Micro-Hutong dal 2013 e l’Art School a Cha’er Hutong. Nella seconda parte i lavori dello studio ZAO/Standardarchitecture mirano a sviluppare soluzioni complete per aumentare i flussi turistici nella valle del fiume Yarlung Tsangpo. I progetti si basano su tecniche artigianali tradizionali: i volumi in costruzione, il miglioramento delle infrastrutture e le loro relative funzioni sono integrate nel paesaggio tibetano con rampe, terrazze o forme geometriche spezzate. Eyes fixed on Asia and China. With architect Zhang Ke of Beijing, one of the most promising protagonists of Asiatic world, Aedes presents an exhibition that illustrates the methods and works of ZAO/Standardarchitecture, founded in 2001 by the Chinese architect. We can find a wide variety of small and big interventions for museums or touristic related projects in the Tibet area. Each work shows the intention to combine traditional and contemporary cultures, alternating modernity and respect for local values. The first part of the exhibition concentrates on interventions in Beijing, such as the preservation of City Wall that portrays time layering. Then we have Micro-Hutong project from 2013 and the Art School in Cha’er Hutong. In the second part the work of Zao/ Standardarchitecture studio aims to developing complete solutions to increase the affluence of tourists like in Yarlung Tsangpo’s river valley. The projects are based on handmade traditional techniques: the under construction buildings, the improvement of the facilities and their respective functions are integrated in Tibetan landscape with stairs flights, platforms or geometrical fragmented shapes. ATMOSFERE DOMESTICHE Un racconto sulla filosofia progettuale del domestico attraverso 10 progetti di residenze private di Aldo Parisotto e Massimo Formenton con gli scatti di Paolo Utimpergher e con i testi di Marco Mulazzani. Scorrono tra le pagine case in città e case di vacanza, trasformazioni di edifici esistenti storici o moderni, nuove costruzioni o riorganizzazioni di spazi interni. Gli interni delle abitazioni, essenziali e contemporanei, vivono in relazione con gli esterni e con gli involucri, con l’orizzonte del mare o con il profilo delle montagne, con un parco o con un giardino o con l’ambiente caotico della metropoli. Ogni ambiente è plasmato dalla luce che diventa protagonista grazie alle aperture, scivolando sulle pareti e facendo vibrare i materiali. Quando Aldo Parisotto e Massimo Formenton partono con una nuova costruzione ricorrono al loro modello prediletto: lo spazio modulato senza soluzione di continuità inserendo però improvvise dilatazioni verticali per rompere la regola, agendo sulla posizione e sulla dimensione delle aperture. Se intervengono su edifici esistenti si avvalgono della loro sensibilità e esperienza riconfigurano totalmente pianta e sezione. (P.M.)
A story about household’s design philosophy with 10 private households projects designed by Aldo Parisotto and Massimo Formenton with pictures by Paolo Utimpergher and texts by Marco Mulazzani. On the pages we find city and holiday households, transformations of histo14 ric or modern existing buildings, new interiors’ constructions or reorganizations. Households’ interiors, essential and contemporary, are related to exteriors and walls, with sea horizon or mountains’ profile, with a park or the city’s chaotic environment. Each room is shaped by the light that becomes the main element thanks to the openings, it slides on the walls
and shakes up the materials. When Aldo Parisotto and Massimo Formenton start a new construction they use their favourite model: modular continued space but with sudden vertical expansions to break the rule, working on the openings’ location and size. If they work on existing buildings they used their own perception and experience to completely reconfigure the plan and section. (P.M.)
House in Hamburg. The photo-bioreactors make this passive house be able to generate biomass and thermal energy and at the same time functioning as sun screen, thermal and acoustic insulation. The volume presents essays, an initial summary, paintings, plans, layouts, sections, images and sketches. È il nuovo libro pubblicato da Niggli Verlag sul primo edificio al mondo con facciata bioreattiva, con pannelli di vetro che contengono all’interno microalghe. È stato lanciato lo scorso novembre alla 14esima Mostra Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia. Il libro è stato scritto da Edith Hemmrich, Mark Blaschitz e Jan Wurm, ognuno dei quali ha giocato un ruolo chiave nella creazione della BIQ House ad Amburgo. I foto-bioreattori fanno in modo che questa casa passiva sia in grado di generare biomassa ed energia termica e allo stesso tempo funziona come schermatura solare e come isolamento termico e acustico. Il volume presenta saggi, un sommario iniziale, disegni, piante, planimetrie, sezioni, immagini e schizzi a mano. Vi è anche un saggio fotografico del progetto da parte del fotografo di architettura austriaco Paul Ott. (F.R.)
Lo spazio non è infinito, ma i progetti lo sono, come le idee per realizzarli e quale miglior idea se non recuperare terreni e spazi e rendere fruibili quelle parti di territorio che hanno subito l’aggressione dell’industrializzazione e della cementificazione attraverso delle scelte intelligenti e consapevoli? Il volume ‘Atlante dei paesaggi riciclati’ edito da Skira mostra ed elenca per la prima volta i tanti progetti di recupero del suolo, realizzati in tutto il mondo, attraverso un ‘itinerario consapevole’ degli interventi che hanno reso possibile la trasformazione di spazi ed aree magari in disuso ed inutilizzabili, come terreni bonificati, cave recuperate, ex discarichi terrains vague, in luoghi ‘rinati’ attraverso grandi opere architettoniche. I 57 progetti pubblicati, sia decennali e conclusi sia ancora work in progress, sono organizzati per ‘ampiezza’ di territorio recuperato così da descrivere i risultati ottenuti e i benefici finali. Invitano a una riflessione più ampia e profonda sulle possibilità e sugli scenari futuri per ispirare a una radicale ma contemporanea idea di paesaggio ‘recuperato’ che sia di conseguenza una nuova ricchezza sociale, economica ed ambientale. Space is not unlimited, but projects are, like the ideas to realize them and what better idea if not recovering spaces and make those lands which have been damaged by industrialization and uncontrolled urbanization usable through smart and aware choices? The volume ‘Atlante dei paesaggi riciclati’ edited by Skira shows and lists for the first time many projects of land recovery, realized across the whole world, through an ‘aware itinerary’ of the interventions which transformed spaces and areas which were unused or unusable, such as improved lands, recovered mines, ex vacant lots, in places which ‘bore again’ through great architectural works. 157 published projects, both ended and work in progress, organized according to the ‘width’ of the recovered land. They welcome to a wider and deeper reflection on the future possibilities to inspire a radical but contemporary idea of ‘recovered’ landscape which can become a new social, economical and environmental richness. UN PATRIMONIO ARTISTICO SENZA ‘Un patrimonio artistico senza’ racconta l’enorme confusione e il sempre più grave ritardo culturale in cui giacciono restauro, conservazione e tutela oggi in Italia. L’autore, Bruno Zanardi, conduce la propria narrazione da testimone diretto, quale è ormai da quasi mezzo secolo. E avanza molti e desolanti esempi: restauri grossolanamente sbagliati, perenne crisi formativa del settore, cementificazione dissennata del paesaggio. Ma avanza anche numerosi casi positivi, a dimostrazione di come la partita per dare un futuro al nostro patrimonio storico e artistico sia ancora del tutto aperta. A patto però che il Ministero dei beni culturali abbia il coraggio d’attuare una politica di tutela moderna ed efficiente, perché finalmente aperta a un lavoro comune con i Ministeri dell’Università e dell’Ambiente e con la ricerca scientifica dell’industria. Lavoro comune che attui quella conservazione preventiva e programmata in rapporto all’ambiente che sempre più appare l’unica azione di tutela in grado di consentire la salvaguardia e la cura del fondamentale carattere storico ed estetico del nostro patrimonio artistico: la sua indisgiungibilità dal paesaggio – urbano, agrario e naturale – in cui è andato stratificandosi in millenni. ‘Un patrimonio artistico senza’ tells about the massive confusion and increasing cultural backwardness that are currently present in Italy in terms of restoration, conservation and safeguard. Author Bruno Zanardi writes as an eyewitness, which he has been for almost a half century. And he provides many distressing examples: grossly mistaken restorations, continuous training crisis of the industry, senseless overbuilding with landscape damaging. He also mentions many positive cases as well, which proves that the game of giving a future to our historical and artistic heritage is still extremely open. On condition, however, that Ministry for Cultural Heritage has the courage to implement a modern and effective protection policy, that is open to collaboration with Ministry of the University and Ministry of the Environment and with industry scientific research. A teamwork leading to that preventative and programmed conservation which is related to environment and increasingly appears as the only protective action that can protect and care for the main historical and aesthetic feature of our artistic heritage: its indissoluble bond with the landscape – urban, agricultural and natural – in which it has been developing for thousands of years. KATSUFUMI KUBOTA Questo volume, a cura di Marco Biagi, raccoglie la prima sintesi monografica completa dedicata al profilo e all’opera di Katsufumi Kubota, figura appartata ma d’indubbio interesse nel panorama dell’architettura nipponica contemporanea, ancora poco conosciuta al di fuori dei confini nazionali. Si tratta quasi esclusivamente di abitazioni private, dispositivi domestici nei quali Kubota ha sviluppato e affinato nel tempo una poetica di apprezzabile eleganza e intensità espressiva, pronta a misurarsi con prove di maggiore scala e complessità. Nel libro, la sequenza delle case, ordinata cronologicamente, include edifici tuttora inediti in Occidente e mostra la coerente maturazione di una sintassi

In 2002 Kevin Roche donated Eero Saarinen and Associates studio’s archive to Yale University. Examining the original drawings, letters and other rare materials, Matrix International found some previously unknown Furniture Design projects and further deepened their examinations in order to develop an industrial production. The Lounge Seats for General Motors Technical Center, the tables for Vassar College and the modular seats for Chicago University’s Law School are now part of Matrix International’s collection. The organic unit in furniture design is what defines this experience and offers a wide perspective on Saarinen’s work in Furniture Design’s industry. (P.M.) ‘Eero Saarinen. This book, curated by Marco Biagi, contains the first complete monograph dedicated to the life and work of Katsufumi Kubota, a solitary but most interesting personality active in Japanese contemporary architecture’s industry, which is still little-known outside national borders. His work is mostly centered on private households and indoor devices for which Kubota has developed and improved in time his poetics of remarkable elegance and expressive intensity, which is ready to face greater and more complex trials. Inside the pages, the houses’ sequence, presented in chronological order, includes buildings that are still unknown in Western world and shows the logical growth of a personal syntax based on geometric abstraction and material sublimation. A critical essay by Marco Biagi anticipates the monographic pages dedicated to each house and investigates Kubota’s work in relation to the typical Japanese concept of an architecture that is meant to combine spirit and nature. The book, available in Italian/English bilingual edition, is introduced by a preface written by Francesco Dal Co and an original text by Kutoba telling his architecture’s poetics growth. 10TH CASALGRANDE PADANA GRAND PRIX Il Grand Prix Casalgrande Padana è un concorso internazionale di architettura unico nel suo genere, promosso per sviluppare l’utilizzo della ceramica in applicazioni architettoniche di tutto il mondo e proprio per la sua internazionalità ha ampliato sempre più la sua rilevanza. Il concorso seleziona e premia quei professionisti che, attraverso la loro opera, meglio hanno saputo utilizzare e valorizzare le proprietà tecniche e le potenzialità espressive dei materiali Casalgrande Padana. Possono partecipare al premio tutti i progettisti (architetti, ingegneri, designer, arredatori di interni, studi tecnici privati o pubblici, studi professionali di architettura e decorazione di interni ecc.), che abbiano realizzato opere in cui sono stati impiegati i materiali Casalgrande Padana per pavimentazioni e/o rivestimenti di qualsiasi tipo. L’edizione 2013-2015 del Grand Prix prevede l’iscrizione entro il 31 dicembre 2015; i candidati devono far pervenire la propria adesione iscrivendosi online sul sito www.grandprixcasalgrandepadana.com oppure via posta, inviando la documentazione richiesta alla Segreteria del Grand Prix c/o Casalgrande Padana – Strada Statale 467, n. 73 42013 Casalgrande (RE). Casalgrande Padana Grand Prix is an International architecture contest, unique in its genre, promoted to develop the use of ceramic in architectural applications across the world and its International feature widened its relevance. The contest selects and awards those professionals who, through their work, better used and appraised the technical characteristics and the expressive potentialities of Casalgrande Padana materials. All designers can take part in the award 16 (architects, engineers, designers, interior designers, private or public technical studios and interior decoration studios etc.), who realized works where Casalgrande Padana materials have been used, both for floors and/or coverings. GRAN DESIGN ETICO Si è svolta il 20 novembre 2014, presso lo Spazio Oberdan di Milano, la cerimonia di assegnazione del premio Gran Design Etico, ideato da Sergio Costa e organizzato dall’associazione Plana per stimolare una riflessione sul progetto consapevole. Sul podio, le prime tra le trentasette aziende selezionate che si sono distinte per il costante abbinamento tra ricerca, innovazione e sostenibilità, mettendo al centro dei loro processi l’uomo e l’ambiente. Ne è emersa un’interessante mappatura della più recente produzione industriale, che spazia dal mondo della casa a quello dell’ufficio, senza tralasciare i temi del food, della mobilità e della persona. Tra i pezzi in mostra, oggi raccolti nel fascicolo dedicato a questa tredicesima edizione della manifestazione: il sistema Kytò di Azzurra, la bicicletta Little Italy di Motorini Zanini, la pasta Campotti di Pastificio dei Campi, le scarpe Bikila Evo di Vibram FiveFingers, la BatBox (rifugio artificiale per pipistrelli) di Coop Italia e il vaso Rimeless serie DuraStyle di Duravit. On the 20th of November 2014, at Spazio Oberdan in Milan, it took place the awards ceremony for Gran Design Etico prize, created by Segio Costa and organised by Plana association in order to stimulate reflection on aware design. On the podium were the first best applicants of the thirty-seven selected companies that stood out for constantly combining research, innovation and sustainability and putting man and environment at the centre of their processes. The outcome was an interesting map of the most recent industrial production, which goes from the world of the house to the world of the office, without forgetting the themes of food, mobility and individual. Among the pieces on display, now collected in the booklet dedicated to this thirteenth edition of the exhibition: Kytò system by Azzurra, Little Italy bycicle by Motorini Zanini, Campotti pasta by Pastificio

NATURA VS ARCHITETTURA Il Bosco Verticale, progettato da Studio Boeri su incarico di Hines, torna a far parlare di sé a livello internazionale. Questa volta perché le due torri ad uso residenziale, da poco inaugurate all’interno del complesso Porta Nuova Isola di Milano, hanno vinto l’International Award Highrise 2014 di Arup. Le ragioni del premio hanno a che vedere con il carattere pionirestico di un intervento che si propone di superare i più alti standard dell’abitare sostenibile, lavorando in particolare sul tema della biodiversità. Si pensi che i due edifici, alti rispettivamente 80 e 112 metri, sono in grado di ospitare 480 alberi di grande e media altezza, 300 alberi di dimensioni piccole, 11.000 tra perenni e tappezzanti e 5.000 arbusti. Ovvero, l’equivalente di 20.000 metri quadrati di bosco e sottobosco, distribuiti su una superficie urbana di 1.500 metri quadrati e controllati a livello condominiale. Cosa che, se tutto va bene, favorirà la creazione di un ecosistema urbano colonizzato da volatili e insetti, capace di mitigare il clima e filtrare le polveri sottili. (F.D.P.)
NATURE VS ARCHITECTURE The Vertical Forest, designed by Studio Boeri and committed by Hines, is being discussed again at an international level. This time it’s because of the two residential towers, recently opened inside Porta Nuova Isola building in Milan, which have won Arup’s 2014 Highrise International Award. The reasons for the prize are to be seen in the pioneering character of an intervention that aims to rise above the highest standards of sustainable living, by working in particular on
the theme of biodiversity. Consider that the two buildings, which have a height of 80m and 112m respectively, can host 480 threes of large and medium height, 300 threes of small size, 11.000 between the perennial and ground-cover ones and 5.000 19 shrubs. That’s the equivalent of 20.000 square metres of forest and underwood, distributed on a urban surface of 1.500 square metres and controlled by the residents. This will hopefully help creating a urban ecosystem populated by birds and insects, which will be able to mitigate the climate and filter out small particles. (F.D.P.)
