BITS ‘N PIECES Gelbvieh Weddings Samee Ledgerwood of Ledgerwood Gelbvieh, married Pete Charriere of Rafter C Reds. The ceremony took place on May 17, 2014. Both operations are located in Clarkston, Wash. The couple will combine their Gelbvieh and Red Angus herds to produce both purebred and Balancer® cattle.

Did You Know? The first American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic was held in 1981 in Fremont, Nebraska. The 2014 Barnyard Classic marked the 34th annual Junior Classic.

Gelbvieh Departures Daniel L. Smith, 50, died Aug. 2, 2014, in Hutchinson. He was born May 3, 1964, in Hutchinson, to Earle and Diane (Wright) Smith. He married Lori Nethercot on Aug. 1, 1986, in Hutchinson. She survives. Dan was a product specialist at AGCO in Hesston. Survivors include: his wife; sons, Tyler and Kyle Smith, all of Hutchinson; mother-in-law, Sybil Nethercot of Hutchinson; mother, Diane Boindi of Virginia; a brother; a sister; and many other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law, Paul Nethercot. Dan, Lori, Kyle and Tyler were active members of the American Gelbvieh Association and were instrumental in hosting the 2003 American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic held in Hutchinson, Kan.

The AGJA has approximately 520 members. The vision of the AGJA is to unify, educate, and develop leaders of the beef industry. There are a total of 38,017 cows assessed in the American Gelbvieh Association’s total herd enrollment program so far for 2014. Junior members have assessed 1,729 cows so far for 2014. The average number of cows assessed per AGA member is 30.9 cows. On September 28, 1974, a group of 12 young people and three adults met in Vail, Colorado to discuss the organization of a youth Gelbvieh association.
