T

his month the other 99% of the folks who aren’t involved in production agriculture recognize beef. May is Beef Month – a time to recognize the important role beef plays in the American diet, our economy and our communities. For those reading this, I know that every month is beef month, but as we prepare to go to grass, let’s think about the opportunities we have as a breed, as a membership and as an industry to grow demand. Let’s keep beef on the grill this summer and beyond.

We are blessed that beef isn’t just a commodity in the U.S., it’s a staple of the American diet – including our own. And while my family enjoys a broad spectrum of protein choices, beef is always our go-to. As producers, we’re fortunate to have access to high quality beef for our own tables and hopefully we all recognize the importance of making it accessible to others.

INFORMATION EXCHANGE DISCOVER THE COW POWER IN YOUR HERD! The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF), and Neogen, to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.

Through participation in the project, members have the opportunity to receive a research price of $20 for a GGP-100k genomic test on females provided they DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory. Additionally, participants who submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional one-time $4 per head rebate. Thus, all females can receive a GGP-100k genomic test for only $16. For less than the cost of a parentage test, members are encouraged to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and learn about the cow power in their herd.

DNA TEST HERD SIRES Don’t forget to collect a DNA sample on walking sires that don’t already have a minimum of a GGP-100k test result on file with the AGA in order to register progeny. The best time to collect samples is ahead of bull turnout for breeding. The GGP-100k testing must be ordered through AGA and sent to the Neogen laboratory to meet this requirement.

DNA samples collected with a tissue sampling unit (TSU) are the preferred method of DNA sample collection, per the recommendation of Neogen. This preference is due to the sample type’s low failure rate, the speed at which a sample can be collected chute-side, and ease and speed of handling at the lab. However, the lab still accepts blood and hair card samples.

REMEMBERING LINDA SCHAFER Join us in remembering longtime Colorado Gelbvieh breeder Linda Schafer who passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at the age of 71.

Family and friends knew Linda as a devoted daughter, mother, sister, and friend, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, or a story about working on the family farm and spending time with her family. She found the greatest joy in working with her animals, tending to the land, and spending time with loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, compassion, and an unbreakable bond.

A service celebrating Linda’s life was held on April 12, 2025, at 11:00am, at the Byers American Legion Hall, in Byers, Colo. where friends and family gathered to share memories, laughter, and stories of a life well lived.

W

hen you talk about cow power, you’re talking about the Gelbvieh cow. No other breed can match her moderate frame, efficient milking ability and unsurpassed fertility. Gelbvieh cows are beef making machines, and sustainability starts with the cow.

Gelbvieh cows are known for their exceptional maternal traits. According to data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Gelbvieh females reach puberty earlier than any other major beef breed – a trait that puts more dollars in the pockets of producers and more pounds of beef on the table over the course of a Gelbvieh cow’s productive life.

Gelbvieh cows bring the strongest maternal traits. They put calves on the ground that grow and those cows have plenty of longevity,” says Gale Rippey, Rippey Farms, Galax, Virginia. “In a situation where we don’t have adequate feed to maintain body condition score, those cows will still grow a good calf and then turn around and breed right back.”

LONGEVITY THAT PAYS Replacement heifers are expensive. In today’s market, replacement heifers are almost exorbitant and a purchase many producers can find themselves upside down on for any number of reasons.

Whether you’re purchasing or retaining, doing homework on the heifers you will add to your herd has never been more critical. The horror stories of 2015 heifer purchases are still on the minds of many and rightfully so.

Cow longevity is one of the most economically important traits in a beef cow herd. Longevity is where the Gelbvieh cow truly shines. Reproductive performance is typically the leading driver for culling and the most important economic trait in beef cattle – few other traits matter when a cow can’t put a calf on the ground year after year.

Once she’s seven or eight, she’s paid for. I need cows that can produce calves until they are 12 or 13 years old, that’s basically five or six free calves that we get by not having to replace her,” Chadron, Nebraska rancher, Boone Huffman says.

Profit is driven by stayability, and it is common for Gelbvieh females to stay in the herd for 12-15 years.

GROWING CALVES, NOT COW SIZE You may remember an article from last month’s Gelbvieh World issue called “Big Cows Don’t Equal Big Calves”.

Maintaining a bigger frame score cow for the few additional pounds she may or may not add to a calf in the fall doesn’t pay. That is why the Gelbvieh breed has focused on moderating cow size.

Today, the average five-year old Gelbvieh cow weighs around 1300 pounds – the lowest among major continental breeds.

They consume fewer resources without compromising the pounds of beef they deliver at weaning, boasting some of the highest cow:calf weaning ratios in the industry. The Gelbvieh cow is the definition of doing more with less!

Calving ease is another hallmark of the breed. Lower birth weights paired with calves that hit the ground running improves calf survivability for any operation. NATURAL BREEDING AGREEMENTS

hether you run five cows or five thousand cows, we can appreciate and value the relationships built within this breed.

Back in the day, acts of kindness and appreciation were often demonstrated in simple ways, like borrowing a cup of sugar from your neighbor. But what happens when your neighbor asks for more than just a cup of sugar—say, a bull, for example? By using the Natural Breeding Agreement option in the AGA Online Registry Service, active AGA members can register offspring from sires that meet the requirements of a natural service herd sire—even if they don’t own the animal themselves.

s we gear up for the spring breeding season, few factors weigh on profitability as heavily as calving percentage, and while it’s easy to count the live calves that hit the ground during calving next spring, your live calf percentage truly begins calculating at breeding. The first 40 days after conception can make or break your 2026 opportunity for profitability.

Dr. Rick Funston, a Nebraska Extension beef cattle reproductive physiologist, says that while conception rates in beef cattle can be as high as 90% initially, only about 60% of pregnancies persist by day 40.

PRE-BREEDING MANAGEMENT Funston emphasizes the importance of the period leading up to breeding.

“That is the period where we tend to have the most control, especially if the animals are in a dry lot or we’re feeding a certain ration,” he says. “I never want animals gaining more prior to breeding than they are going to gain post breeding.”

Fleshy cows that drop weight when they go to grass is a leading driver in pregnancy loss, especially if a wet, cool spring has affected the nutritional quality of the grass. Cows and heifers should have nutritional opportunity to gain after breeding and once on grass for the best pregnancy protection.

“We probably get a two-pound gain on good grass early in the breeding season.

So if we think about what we’re feeding before going to grass, I don’t ever want those animals gaining more than a pound and a half before breeding and going to grass,” he says.

TRANSPORTATION: THE 5 OR 40 PRINCIPLE Beyond body condition, managing stress plays a critical role in the maintenance of early pregnancy. And there are few periods in a cow’s annual cycle that are more stressful than going to grass.

Whether you are trucking or driving cattle to grass, transportation is stressful.

“I tell people to get them gone within five days or you should wait 40, but that becomes a real compromise for operations that want to breed for a couple of cycles,” Funston concedes. “If cleanup bulls are used, you’re going to have animals in that critical time almost regardless of when you transport them.”

It isn’t until after day six or seven that they fully establish apposition of the uterus; the placenta occurs around day 30. This is a critical time.”

If you’re going to transport, get a bull with them as soon as possible, Funston advises. The management strategy makes distinguishing between AI and naturally sired calves less convenient but helps to ensure a calf the following spring. Bulls cover up the mistakes and losses that occur during transport.

Diagnosing pregnancy is also a topic of discussion amongst producers. Funston says that while ultrasound has gotten a bad rap over the past few years, there are no indications that ultrasound is more harmful to an early pregnancy than palpation by an experienced practitioner.

In fact, he says that ultrasound is the less invasive of the two.

With the looming threats of drought and high slaughter prices, early pregnancy detection is tempting.

“The value of identifying open cows early must be weighed against the cost of potential pregnancy loss,” he says.

The value of a live calf to sell next fall should also be factored into the equation.

The most expensive period of cow maintenance is behind us as we move to grass. If drought and feedstuffs aren’t a concern, consider the value of a live calf in what are projected to be record breaking markets next fall against the value of an open slaughter cow in June or July.

As a young person, it is very common to be bombarded by this advice, especially as you reach high school and college. For some, this may seem highly intimidating when trying to pick through the number of opportunities available to youth within and outside the agricultural community.

During my freshman year of high school, my friends started the joke that if we wanted to hang out, then they had to schedule it three months in advance, all because of my crazy schedule. As that joke faded into reality, I was one of those small-town students who was constantly running between practices, activities, and leadership positions in and out of school.

While I enjoyed all of these things, it was definitely a lot to handle. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, gave me a chance to slow down and reflect on what I was doing. Being at home, in the barn, and engulfed in agriculture-related activities made me realize where I wanted to spend more of my time. I realized it was time to shift my focus from exploring new opportunities to being intentional with opportunities that I choose to

continue my time in. The thought of stepping away from high school sports had already crossed my mind, but seeing how much more I enjoyed my agriculture and leadership activities showed me that I should let some things go. Taking the time to be intentional about what opportunities we choose to continue investing our time in can help us find a more focused path that can help center in our own successes.

This is one of the reasons why I decided to run for the Junior Board of Directors.

Not only did it give me the chance to represent the breed of cattle that I know and love but also the amazing people in our organization. Through this experience alone, I have used public speaking, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and other interpersonal skills that have helped me grow as a person. ast of Petit Jean Mountain, where the Arkansas River winds through rolling pastures, the Payne Family Farm stands as a testament to generations of dedication, resilience, and a passion for quality cattle. For father and son duo John and Travis Payne, ranching is more than a livelihood; it is a way of life, built on hard work, innovation, and a deep respect for the land and livestock.

The Payne family’s ranching roots trace back decades, beginning with Herefords.

In 1964, John’s father, Herschel, made a defining move by officially purchasing

John was immersed in the cattle industry from an early age. While showing Herefords as a young man, he met his future wife, Kim, who was showing Shorthorns. Their shared background in the cattle industry built the foundation for the family and their ranching legacy.

When Herschel and John started having trouble with high-birth-weight calves, Clomer Young from Winrock Farms proposed an experiment, introducing one of their Santa Gertrudis bulls to the Payne family’s Herefords to see if it would enhance their herd’s genetics.

This seemingly small suggestion ignited John’s curiosity and set him on a path of discovery.

“We started realizing we could get hybrid vigor, and we could get better genetics,” John Payne said.

Through industry connections and extensive research, he was introduced

to Gelbvieh cattle, a breed that would ultimately transform the family’s herd.

These cattle offered advantages including increased weaning weights, superior maternal instincts, and efficient growth rates—qualities that made them an ideal fit for the Payne operation.

“Genetics are a big part of the cattle industry now,” Travis Payne said. “That momma cow plays a big role in it, if she is a 900-1,100 pound cow and she can raise a calf that’s 600 pounds sitting on her side obviously that’s what you want so that’s what we are after.”

With this knowledge in hand, the Paynes spent years refining their breeding program, methodically selecting and crossbreeding to achieve the ideal combination of size, marbling, and maternal ability. They strategically incorporated Gelbvieh genetics with Brangus and Angus to create a herd that not only thrives on their land but produces high-quality beef that meets the demands of today’s market.

“The first thing we look at is can they have the calf; that’s a big thing with me. I want them pelvic measured to make sure they can have the calf. Number two is milk. With the Gelbvieh though I have yet to worry about that,” Travis said.

Record keeping plays an essential role in their success. They meticulously track weaning weights, pelvic measurements, and other performance indicators. Each decision is backed by data, allowing them to continue refining their herd generation after generation.

This balance of genetics ensures that their herd is not only productive but also manageable. A key factor in their operation is temperament. Docile cattle are easier to handle, making day-to-day work safer and more efficient.

“Docility is a big thing for me. I don’t put up with rude people or high-headed cattle,” John said.

Careful management is the backbone of the Payne family’s success. Every decision, from breeding to weaning, is made

with precision and purpose. Calves are typically vaccinated and weaned between 90 to 120 days, though the exact timing can vary depending on conditions. Some calves are fed before being sold, while others are moved directly to market, allowing the Paynes to adjust their approach based on economic and herd needs.

“We are currently getting ready to spray to continue to improve our ground,” John said.

The family maintains both spring and fall calving herds, a strategy that not only balances their workload but also provides flexibility in marketing their cattle. When it comes to weaning methods, they have found that fence-line weaning helps ease the transition of calves while minimizing stress.

While they work as a team on the farm, Travis focuses on selecting the right genetics for their herd. They share ownership of their hay equipment, continuously investing in better tools to improve efficiency. When it comes to selling cattle, they combine their stock to increase their numbers and maximize their market impact. When it comes to working with family, communication is key.

The Payne family operates with a keen awareness of market conditions, selling cattle strategically to maximize profitability. While the majority of their calves are sold to stockyards, they have also explored selling bulls as an additional revenue stream. However, the volatility of the cattle market has influenced their approach.

“My future goal is to sell some bulls again. I am looking at teaming up with some partners to make southern balancer bulls and to have a commercial herd and seedstock,” Travis said.

With approximately five hundred acres spread across their home ranch and leased land, the Paynes rely on rotational grazing to maintain pasture health and optimize forage use. By moving cattle through different grazing areas, they prevent overgrazing, allow grass to recover, and improve soil quality— critical factors in running a sustainable operation.

“My ag teacher used to say that the best farm in Arkansas is one where you can run a cow on two acres – and that’s exactly what we’re able to do here,” John reflects.

Additionally, they are investing in pasture improvement, with plans to implement better forage management techniques.

This adaptability is key to their longevity in the industry. Instead of chasing trends, they remain focused on longterm sustainability and smart financial decisions.

“We talk a lot,” Travis said. “I’ll call him and say, ‘I have an idea I’m thinking about running with—what do you think?’ And we’ll talk it through.”

The Payne family’s vision for the future is one of growth and continuous improvement. They are in the process of developing Southern Balancer bulls (a hybrid of Gelbvieh and Brangus) designed to offer superior genetics to other ranchers seeking high-performing cattle. This initiative reflects their commitment to not only improving their own herd but also contributing to the broader cattle industry.

For the Paynes, ranching has always been about more than just cattle—it’s about legacy. John’s decades of experience, combined with Travis’s drive for innovation, make them a formidable team, blending traditional wisdom with modern advancements. The Steer-Heifer Price Difference: IMPLICATIONS FOR HERD EXPANSION

T

he price difference between steers and heifers has long been a focal point for cattle market analysts, cow/calf producers, feedlot operators, and other industry stakeholders, providing insights into market trends, herd expansion, and feeder cattle demand.

Herd expansion remains a lingering question and a topic of ongoing debate in 2025. Current industry headwinds, unlike those of previous cyclical shifts, are becoming increasingly relevant as the industry continues to define the trough of the ongoing cyclical contraction. Amid various confounding factors, revisiting the steer-heifer differential provides important clarity in reevaluating this question.

Heifer calves are typically discounted relative to their steer contemporaries due to their growth variability, reduced feeding efficiency, and tendency to finish at lower weights. The differences in performance justify the premium for steer calves. The discount fluctuates based on the total supply of feeder cattle available for placement in feedlots, the demand for heifers as replacement cattle — both influenced by the cattle cycle and seasonality — and can also vary across weight classes. The price disparity typically widens during the contractionary phase of the cattle cycle due to a surplus of females entering the market instead of being retained as potential breeding stock.

In the transition toward cyclical expansion, heifer discounts typically peak as producers retain females to rebuild herd inventory, thus tightening market supply. The difference is magnified when

feeder cattle prices rise, with steer prices increasing faster than heifer prices.

Through 2024, Nebraska steer and heifer prices across weight classes (400 to 1,000 pounds) increased 15% and 14%, respectively. However, the price difference between steers and heifers widened by 18%, rising from $27.81/cwt to $32.88/ cwt. Although a number of other factors influence the start of herd expansion, larger heifer discounts act as a market signal, incentivizing retention.

In Nebraska, the steer-heifer differential across weight classes (400 to 1,000 pounds) in 2024 was 140% of the 5-year average and 154% of the 10year average. Across 2024, the discount averaged to $29.53 per hundredweight, up from the previous year by $5.28 per hundredweight. The price difference was greatest in the lower weight classes, at $42.82 per hundredweight for 400-to500-pound cattle, and decreased as weight increased. Compared to the equivalent stage of the previous cattle cycle, heifer discounts peaked at $21.72 per hundredweight in 2015, the year following inventory lows. By this point, heifers accounted for 33% of cattle on feed (2015 average), and the transition towards expansion was well underway.

Thus far, the current cattle cycle has proven to be uncharacteristic of those previously observed. Notably, the impact of reduced fed cattle and cow slaughter on downstream beef prices has been mitigated by significant increases in fed carcass weights. In 2024, carcass weights averaged 896 pounds, a 20-pound increase year-over-year, yet total beef production was only marginally lower.

Weights have trended upward for several decades, but the sharp increase observed last year was largely driven by longer days on feed. A heifer’s lower finishing weight, combined with the shifting preference for heavier carcass weights, was likely a contributing factor to the increased steerheifer differential.

The recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration of Elanco’s Experior feed additive, to be fed in combination with Melengestrol acetate (MGA) (i.e. a synthetic hormone commonly used as a feed additive to suppress estrus in finishing heifers), could shift the industry’s perception of the value placed on heifers. Experior, a beta-agonist and repartitioning agent, is labeled for reducing ammonia gas emissions per pound of live weight and hot carcass weight but has also been proven to increase hot carcass weight.

Modified feeding strategies, combined with incentives to finish cattle at heavier weights, may prompt the industry to reassess the current market valuation of heifer calves intended for feedlot placement.

The steer-heifer differential observed in 2024 was historically large compared to the previous 10 years, partly due to the magnitude of price levels across all weight classes for both steers and heifers.

From the previous cyclical transition, we know that the steer-heifer discount peaked in the year following cattle and calf inventory lows. It is unclear whether 2025 will mirror 2014, but current feedlot heifer inventory suggests that the steerheifer price difference will continue to widen in the coming year.F

NCBA’S RED MEAT YIELD COMMITTEE TALKS SALEABLE YIELD AT CATTLECON25

f you follow Gelbvieh World and Profit Picture, you’ll know that our team has been following the call for change many industry professionals have been making for the current USDA yield grade system. Our team had a chance to visit with Dr. Dale Woerner, Ph.D. Associate Professor Cargill Endowed Professor in Sustainable Meat Science Animal and Food Sciences, Texas Tech University, early last fall and shared his thoughts on the shortcomings of our industry’s current yield grade system in our September Profit Picture. In February, at the National Cattleman’s Beef Association Convention and Tradeshow, we had a chance to sit in on the standing-room-only Cattleman’s College session that took a look at the history of our current system, where we are today and what the future may look like for yield grade.

THE SCIENCE OF YIELD Panelists from the NCBA Red Meat Yield committee included Glen Dolezal of Cargill, James Henderson of Bradley 3 Ranch, Ty Lawrence from Texas A&M University, and John Sitka of Certified Angus Beef. Each presented research and findings from their respective areas of expertise with the core theme of each presentation driving home the importance of actual red meat yield.

A handout provided by the committee at the beginning of the session sparked discussion and questions amongst attendees. Of particular interest was a photo showing two steers with identical calculated yield grades. The photo set the tone for not only the panel discussion but showcased the incredible financial

“That’s the whole point,” said James Henderson of Bradley 3 Ranch when asked how producers can phenotypically select animals given flaws in the current carcass yield grading system. “Today’s yield grade does a very poor job—if those two animals have the exact same yield grade, that’s a real good example of the problem.”

“We are still using those four factors to calculate what we know as the boneless, closely trimmed rib, loin, chuck and round,” explained Ty Lawrence.

SCHLUETER JOINS AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION AS 2025 SUMMER INTERN

T

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is excited to welcome Grace Schlueter as the 2025 summer intern. Schlueter, a sophomore majoring in Animal Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for the cattle industry to her role.

Schlueter grew up on a registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cow-calf operation near Scribner, Nebraska.

Her lifelong involvement in agriculture includes participation in 4-H and FFA programs, where she enjoyed livestock judging and showing. She is also a current member of the UNL Block and Bridle Club and Meats Judging team.

“I’ve always been passionate about agriculture and genetics. This internship is an incredible opportunity to gain a holistic view of the beef industry by working with a breed association,”

One of Schlueter’s key responsibilities this summer will be assisting with the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Nationals event, which brings together youth from across the country for competitions, networking, and leadership development.

“I’m most excited about helping organize Junior Nationals,” she said. “It’s such a busy time, but I love the energy and seeing everything come together.”

AGA is committed to success of the cattle industry which means supporting and fostering opportunities for the future of the industry: the next generation of producers and colleagues.

As a former ag teacher, Harold Bertz, AGA executive director, shares that creating opportunities for interns and witnessing their professional growth is rewarding for the AGA team and its members.

“Internships provide invaluable hands-on experiences, helping our young leaders explore their passions, build skills, and discover pathways to long-term involvement in an industry that is vital to agriculture and food production,” he says. “These are the future leaders of our industry and helping them discover all that the industry has to offer is an important role we can all take part in.”

During her internship, Schlueter will gain exposure to various aspects of the AGA’s operations, including youth outreach, genetic programs, and registration services.

“This internship will help me figure out what I want to do with my future while allowing me to give back to an industry I love,” Schlueter adds.

Highlights from the March 2025 American Gelbvieh Association Board Meetings

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) held its spring Board Meeting on March 27-28, 2025, at the Embassy Suites Downtown in Omaha, Nebraska. The meeting brought together board members, staff, and guests to discuss critical updates and initiatives aimed at advancing the breed and improving organizational operations.

Marketing discussions included simplifying the AGA logo for use on apparel and promotional materials.

Suggestions included removing “American” and “Association” from the logo while retaining “Gelbvieh” with a short slogan. Updated logo designs will be sent to the board for review before final approval. Staff will explore implementing color-coded DNA test results visible to members based on test types for greater clarity. The board also proposed automatic recurring membership charges unless terminated by members, with AGA staff were tasked to investigate feasibility.

NATIONAL SALE UPDATES

COW POWER Recommendation was made to add recognition for participants of the Cow Power through certificates or logos to help breeders promote their involvement.

Staff will explore pricing options with Neogen for bulk DNA testing, including potential add-ons to the 100k test price.

Carcass data submission was reviewed, emphasizing its impact on Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and accuracy.

The board stressed the importance of pairing carcass records with genotypes for better results and highlighted the need for member education on industry standards versus breed performance.

RULES AND BYLAWS UPDATES Rules and Bylaws updates were a focal point of the meeting. An updated version

EDUCATION AND OPERATIONS Operational improvements were discussed, including examining a fee structure for adding foreign animals to the AGA herdbook due to increased pedigree imports. Encouraging members to submit more data was identified as a priority, with suggestions such as promoting unreported calf data submissions.

The board explored hosting a “Type Conference” or industry experts to hear what they are looking for to provide

The recommendation was made to hold the National Show and Sale at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City during even years with odd years returning to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Efforts are underway to encourage more participation at national shows through innovative formats such as phenotype-genotype or percentage-based shows.

Preparations are underway for the launch of new indexes this spring, including mature weight (MW) and dry matter intake (DMI). Member education efforts will focus on explaining these changes, reviewing sire rerankings, and conducting annual index evaluations moving forward.

The meeting concluded with plans for the next board meeting tentatively scheduled for August 6-8 at a Nebraska location, where progress on these initiatives will be reviewed.F

Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.

Members will receive a special research price of $20 on a GGP 100k genomic test to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory.

Requirements:

Participants that submit mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $4 rebate per head.

*This is a research project and DNA turnaround time, data processing, and other timelines within this project are not reflective of current AGA turnaround times.

DNA samples must be collected with an Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit. Blood and hair samples are not eligible for this project.
