This season we will be free to list* and as always free to read. As we investigate a merger, sale, or transition to non profit status. We have secured the 2025 funding to provide Online and limited print. We have also committed to ensuring that everyone has access to our publication. We now offer free print-ondemand services specifically for our older readers with disabilities. Your access to information and inclusion remains our top priorities. Why do Gay Rags exist?

history with Names like Mike Luke and Marius Biondy (publishers), Charlie Sharples (First executive director of the DBA) Monte Swazey, Daryl James (first gay hotel owner) production Hank Reynolds., Jim McArdle. Writers George Zander, Dave Murdoch, Jersey Shore, Pubert, Denise Goolsby and Greg Pettis to name a few.

Let me explain!

Perhaps you missed the struggle for ongoing rights, For over 30 years, the Desert Daily Guide (DDG) fought that struggle with blended voices from hardened advocates to lighthearted jokes and arts and entertainment information. And great

I was Software Release Manager for Yamaha when I first advertised my web hosting biz in the late 90’s the magazine and so amazed I bought the company! Mike often laughed that my income was we twice to size of his entire budget. At the time I was Manager at Yamaha, free lancing web hosting and bartender at Jox bar. But I was commuted to Mikes mission and advanced it when I bought it when he retired. His last day was to ride in the pride car with Adrian. It was yellow beetle rag top and we blasted his favorite song yellow submarine.

To be sure we are often referred to as a “Gay rag,” But the publication’s true mission is widely recognized by its long time readers: to inform, elevate, and provide solidarity to the LGBTQ+ community. The DDG ensures that LGBTQ+ individuals know they are never alone, highlighting the many groups events and services available to them. With no government funding!

Most presidential elections

serve as referendums on the nation’s direction, and this year is no exception.

Its Emancipation 3.0

Yet, it is different in a profound way: the central issue is emancipation—freedom from the grip of systemic racism, authoritarian rule, and the erosion of basic human rights. `Will Paige

One side clings to a vision steeped in racism, xenophobia, and autocracy, fueled by the same cycle of fear and animosity that has hindered the progress of Americans who champion truth and justice as core American values. Many stand together as a coalition striving to safeguard these ideals from a faction that scorns those who embrace liberty, rejects the welcoming spirit of the Statue of Liberty, and dismisses many individual’s right to pursue happiness.

We must defeat a party that has been hijacked by a faction calling itself “MAGA,” led by a former president who attempted a coup in 2021. This individual, now a convicted felon, is once again making a desperate bid to regain power by any means necessary. Astonishingly, as of this writing, he is tied with Kamala Harris. Leaders across the political spectrum—Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike—have largely spoken out against him, but their condemnation alone is not enough. We need action and a unified commitment to uphold democracy, resist authoritarianism, and restore integrity to our government.

To ensure a secure a lasting peaceful transfer of power, we must hold every politician accountable to faithfully uphold the Constitution and the principle that all people are equal. This commitment to constitutional values is essential to preserving our democracy and the rights it guarantees. Elected leaders should be dedicated to protecting justice, equality, and the rule of law above all else, reaffirming that our nation’s strength lies in its unwavering commitment to these ideals.

We must elect leaders who are unwavering in their convictions and willing to hold themselves—and others within their ranks—accountable. True leadership demands individuals who understand the crucial difference between loyalty to party and loyalty to country, and who prioritize the greater good over partisan allegiances. These are people who won’t excuse harmful actions simply because they come from within their own party, but who will instead act as champions for the integrity, fairness, and unity that our country deserves. We need representatives who have the courage to stand against wrongdoing, regardless of the political cost, and who recognize that their ultimate responsibility is to the American people and the principles of democracy, not to any single ideology or agenda.

We must demand reform on House Ethics Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics by creating an independent ethics body with more authority and transparency to address these issues,Much of Congress agrees but has resisted this idea, fearing loss of control over its internal oversight. For example we should not need to catch financial misconduct, misuse of official resources, conflicts of interest, and violations of gift and travel regulations.

PALESTINIAN ART THE EXPRESSION OF A REPRESSED PEOPLE

The lead photo of the Flower Thrower is from a UK artist called Banksy who is a political activist and filmmaker, (more on this artist in a future article). This image is found on a wall in the West Bank in Gaza where many of the Palestinian artists reside or have resided prior to the siege by the IDF. The image reflects a continuing conflict of ideologies representing two groups of humans who have been unable to achieve living peacefully in close proximity for 80 years. The populace would like to live in peaceful proximity but the historically inclined religious leaders of both groups find ways to discriminate based on continuing distortions promoted by and acted on in violent inhuman ways perpetrated by extremists in Hamas on the Palestinian side and right-wing Zionists on the Israeli side. This example of a current artist shows the frustration of living under constant war.

due to discrimination. As a result of centuries of changing environments the art of Palestinian people has gone through cycles of art production, followed by destruction, and then remaking in new environments. The result of this is that it is difficult to establish a primary characteristic in Palestinian art. Much of the early art can be traced back to pre-Islamic Byzantine pictorial art of twodimensional patterns reflected in the tile designs in architectural decoration.

Early Palestinian artists were not formally trained. The art of painting reflects a sense of place much as this painting of a more contemporary artist of a woman reclining under a tree in a peaceful landscape with a city skyline in the background. This scene is reflective of the desire to live a tranquil existence absent of war and destruction.

Palestine is considered a holy land by three of the world’s major religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Both the Palestinians and Jewish people have been uprooted from their geographic areas over the centuries primarily

Centuries emerge and Palestinian art reflects religious themes with the Muslim religion being adopted by most Palestinians. In the 1800s the artist Nicola Saig’s art took on more political issues such as this painting of “The Surrender of Jerusalem ‘’ about a Caliph taking over Jerusalem peacefully.

Palestinian artists were scattered throughout many locals and as a result, a particular style of art did not evolve. From the late 1700s to the 1950s some artists were self-trained and others received formal training some in Europe and some in the United States. In Palestine and Jerusalem from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s a new art was coming forth developed by artists who grew up as refugees. From the late 1960s to the 1990s art was created by artists in exile and those living in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. From the late 1990s to approximately 2016 the number of artists increased, gaining more recognition and practicing more innovation in their art working more in multimedia and conceptual art categories. For those living in the West Bank and Gaza crowded conditions are reflected in the abstract painting of a crowd scene by a contemporary artist.

continued close connections with Palestine through humanitarian aid and art. Her art gives a voice to women who are even more repressed in the Arab world through patriarchy and sexism. Her construction of a woman’s torso draped in ammunition belts is a statement of the power of women.

Women artists have made their mark in Palestinian art, the artist Laila Shawa grew up in occupied Palestine then moved with her family, and has since lived in London and Vermont with

The Palestinian U.S. Museum was established in 2018 in Woodbridge, Connecticut to promote and encourage contemporary Palestinian artists in the U.S. and to help integrate this art into American culture demonstrating the diversity of the people and culture that make up the United States.

The current Israeli-Palestinian war presents more challenges for the artists of Palestine and Israel. Artists of both of these cultures tend to promote peace and growth rather than violence and destruction.

Optimistically the artists of this war-torn region can help create a positive environment for people to live together in harmony.

While we can’t advocate gay cruising in Palm Springs area. The following tips from our friends at gayscruising.com might. Remember you can avoid sexually transmitted diseases, always use a condom. When finished, remember to collect everything (condom wrappers, tissues, etc.) and leave the environment clean. Leave only foot prints!

Leave your valuables at home

In many cruising areas there are malicious people who take the opportunity to steal valuables. Therefore, when you go to practice cruising, try not to carry money, jewelry, etc., if possible try to be accompanied.

Education and respect above all else

Not everyone in cruising areas is looking for the same thing as you. If they tell you NO, respect and do not disturb, just as you’d like to be respected.

Don’t hook up with minors

Remember that it is totally forbidden to mess with children under 18. Don’t trust, Verify that the person you’re flirting with is of legal age.

Report any attacks

If you ever experience any form of aggression, intimidation, theft, or extortion while cruising, it’s important to report it to the local authorities. To be prepared, it’s always a good idea to gather information about your cruising partner such as their name, description, and license plate. The Desert Daily Guide (DDG) has been a strong supporter of various political and self-care issues relevant to the LGBTQ community, often presented in publication with bits of humor. However, it’s crucial to remember that our interest and support for LGBTQ issues are critical, and many local print magazines are facing closure. Losing these publications could result in losing an essential perspective on the local village vibe!

In the February 1981 Harvard Mental Health Letter, Dr. Robert Jay Lifton outlines the psychological dynamics behind cult formation and identifies three primary characteristics:

1. **Charismatic Leadership**: Cults often center around a leader who becomes an object of worship, with followers seeing them as a source of salvation, even as the group’s original principles lose influence.

Coercive Persuasion (Thought Reform): Lifton identifies methods such as “milieu control,” where cults restrict communication and isolate members to control thoughts and beliefs. This manipulation often results in "doubling," where members form a second, cult-identity alongside their original selves.

Exploitation: The cult environment often includes economic, sexual, or other exploitation of members by the leader or inner circle.

Lifton also examines psychological techniques used to reinforce totalistic control, including: Milieu Control: Cults manage members’ surroundings and communications, using isolation and psychological pressure to enforce obedience.

with practices like fasting or chanting. Demand for Purity and Confession: Cults enforce a stark moral dichotomy, urging confession and self-criticism that build dependence on the leader and group norms.

Lifton emphasizes the social and historical context, noting that cults often attract individuals seeking stability and identity amid societal uncertainty. He warns of the dangers when cult ideologies promote an “us versus them” mentality, especially in a nuclear age, and suggests that public education is crucial for preventing cult recruitment.

I used to find humor in comedians making jokes about protesters. Then something changed. It might be information overload, but I saw those protesters’ anger in a way I had never felt before. Beneath that anger, I saw sadness. They were protesting for something they deeply wanted. My whole life, I’ve been told to stand up for what I believe in. This is what they were doing—fighting for their rights. But those videos mocking them now feel shameful, making the victims feel even worse.

Mystical Manipulation: Cult leaders cultivate a “psychology of the pawn,” creating an illusion that members are acting spontaneously, often

This makes MAGA appear cultish. They worship their leader, are victims of coercive persuasion, and are exploited by being sold playing cards. Each rally controls members with constant communication, enforces absolute loyalty, and demands confession to solidify dependency. He gave them a racist vocabulary that basically isolates them from others. Lifton stresses public education to counter recruitment and emphasizes that cults often prey on individuals seeking stability amid social upheaval. It will be up to us to help former members recover from their experiences.

For thousands of years, particles of sand from the San Bernardino Mountains and Indio Hills washed into the Coachella Valley, forming a system of dunes. Today, these dunes are part of the Coachella Valley Preserve System, a 20,000acre sanctuary that is home to several species of increasingly rare wildlife. The Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard depends on this unusual blow sand desert for survival, and “swims” through the sand to escape predators or summer heat on the desert surface. Four other unique wildlife species can also be found here: the Coachella roundtailed ground squirrel, the giant red velvet mite, the

flat-tailed horned lizard and the giant palm-boring beetle. The Coachella Valley Preserve also contains several palm oases, formed because San Andreas Fault lines allow water flowing underground to rise to the surface. The spectacular Thousand Palms Oasis includes a mile-long trail that winds past pools containing endangered desert pupfish. Native vegetation includes creosote bush, burrobush, smoke tree and desert lavender, part of this area’s unique habitat for wildlife. The Coachella Valley Preserve is administered by BLM’s Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office and the Center for Natural Lands Management.

More than 183 bird species have been recorded here, including Gambel’s quail, black-throated sparrows, phainopeplas, black-tailed gnatcatchers and American bitterns. Cactus wrens nest among the chollas. Spring and fall are good times to view songbirds.

Other animals that live in this area include blacktailed jackrabbits, bobcats, and sidewinders. Reptiles may be seen in the summer. Spring through fall is the best time to look for fish in the pools. blm.gov continued on page 40

Living Nude!

San Onofre State Beach – Nude Area

The clothing-optional area of San Onofre State Beach is located south of the state park beaches. This beach, aka Gladiator Beach, is at the edge of the state park boundary, and the only way to get there is by hiking from the state park. San Onofre is one of the better-known clothing optional beaches in California.

From the linear parking lot on the bluff, there are six numbered hiking trails (numbered 1 to 6 north to south) that lead down to the beach. The nude beach is south from the bottom of Trail 6. See Bluffs Beach for more information.

Hike this trail down to the beach, then walk south on the beach away from the lifeguard tower for about one-third mile to reach the designated clothing optional zone. Eventually you’ll find a fence that divides the state park from federal land in Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.

of the state-owned land in San Gregorio State Beach. It’s considered to be the first nude beach in America. Need Other Ideas? While bars and sex apps are great sometimes meeting people in the LGBTQ+ community outside of bars can be both fun and fulfilling. Joining LGBTQ+ organizations or attending events like pride parades and film festivals can provide great opportunities to connect with others. Online communities and social media platforms designed for LGBTQ+ individuals offer safe spaces to meet new friends. Engaging in hobbies and interests, such as joining sports teams, book clubs, or art classes, can also help you meet like-minded people in a more relaxed setting. Volunteering for LGBTQ+ advocacy or support organizations is another excellent way to build meaningful connections. Additionally, attending educational workshops and seminars on LGBTQ+ topics can attract a diverse group of people and foster new friendships.

Pro Tip! Breaking the ice on a hiking trail can be as simple as complimenting someone’s gear, like noticing a cool backpack and asking where they got it, or asking for trail tips if they seem experienced. Offering a snack, like some extra trail mix, or commenting on the beautiful scenery can also start a conversation. Mentioning wildlife sightings or discussing hiking plans can be engaging topics. Sometimes, a warm smile and a friendly “Hi, how’s it going?” Is all it takes. The key is to be friendly, genuine, and respectful.

Avoid making assumptions based on desire, appearances or stereotypes. Instead, use open and respectful communication. Subtle hints can include noticing shared interests in LGBTQ+ mentioning the ddg has always been a great gay ping. We have been here 30 years and if they ask what is it.

NOTE: This page will be updated after the electioin!

It’s hard to believe after this marathon campaign, but we’re now just seven days from Election Day 2024—and Common Cause is working hard to make sure every voter has a voice.

Here’s your guide for what to expect on Election Day—how you can tune out the partisan noise and help your friends, family, and neighbors do their civic duty.

Everyone Needs A Plan To Vote

The single most important thing you can do if you haven’t yet is to make your plan to vote—then ensure every eligible voter you know is doing the same. Use our free online voter tools to check your polling place, track your ballot, and more >>

Even if you follow politics closely, you don’t want to find out on Election Day that there’s a problem with your registration, or that your polling place isn’t where it was last year—so double check now to be safe, not sorry!

Then, if you already know when and where you’re going to vote (or if you already voted early or by absentee ballot) you can make sure others do as well by forwarding this email to at least 3 friends or family members, or reposting Common Cause on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Election Night Is Not Results Night

Don’t expect to know who won the presidential

election on Tuesday night. As in 2020, it will take days for many states to count every vote accurately. That’s why a delay in the results is a sign of a healthy democracy!

Election workers need time to count every single vote—including in-person, mail, absentee, overseas, and military ballots. So once we as voters do our jobs, it’s time to let election workers do theirs.

Here’s your guide to when we anticipate the most contested state results will come in.

Arizona: 2-4 days after Election Day

Georgia: Election Night

Michigan: at most, 2-3 days after Election Day

Nevada: up to 4 days after Election Day

North Carolina: Election Night, or early morning the next day

Ohio: Election Night

Pennsylvania: by Friday, November 8

Wisconsin: Wednesday, November 6

Don’t fall for it when politicians rush to claim victory early or the media demands instant results—the truth is, the official winner can’t be declared until vote counts are certified in the coming weeks. That’s because election results go through a rigorous system of checks and balances to confirm their accuracy.
