A Brief History of Women’s Ministries Adopted from the Women’s Ministries Handbook

While it is true that the Women’s Ministries did not become a full department of the General Conference until 1995, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has long recognized the importance of ministering to women, even as far back as the 1800s. Women’s Ministries began in 1898 when Mrs Sarepta Myrenda Irish Henry, in correspondence with Ellen G. White, outlined “women’s ministries.” She was granted a ministerial license from the General Conference and became the first Women’s Director for the General Conference.

VISION Women empowered and nurtured to fulfil their God-given potential.

MISSION The Department of Women's Ministries exists to uphold, encourage, and challenge Adventist women in their pilgrimage as disciples of Jesus Christ and members of His world church.

PHILOSOPHY We are called to NURTURE our sisters, to EMPOWER them for service, and then to focus all that we have learned on OUTREACH to others.

OBJECTIVES • The Women's Ministries encourage women to improve their potential for participation in the mission of the church.

• It is a support system for hurting women—whether they are suffering from divorce, abuse or simply loneliness.

• It is a forum to help address topics and issues as they affect women.

• It encourages young women through a scholarship program.

• It encourages women to become involved in all areas of ministry in their church, their community, and in their home.

• It mentors young women so that they may find joy in the Lord.

• Women's Ministries recognize that women have many Gifts of the Spirit, and it attempts to help women discover and use these gifts to the glory of God. 4

I Will Go is a rallying call to every member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to be part of Total Member Involvement. Isaiah 6:8 says “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”

It represents women of all ages.

It represents women of different ethnic origins.

It represents women working together.

It represents women supporting and caring for each other.

It represents women with a book. It may be a Bible, representing spiritual growth. The women may be learning for themselves or teaching others.

It is with thankfulness for God’s mercies that I greet and celebrate with you on your 25th Anniversary. Life in 2021 requires us to

leave our comfort zones and allow the Holy Spirit to use us to accomplish the extraordinary. According to Ellen White “The Christian's life is not a modification or improvement of the old, but a transformation of nature. There is a death to self and sin, and a new life altogether. This change can be brought about only by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit....”

It is undeniable that we live in serious times and occurrences worldwide indicate that Christ’s Second Advent is near. The world needs transformation so my sisters we must stand in the gap and in the strength of Christ tear Satan’s strongholds down. Women’s Ministries while catering to the needs of all women must accomplish the mission of God which is the saving of souls for His Kingdom, Commendations to the Pastors, Leaders and members who give support and to Sis. Fayona Mullings and her team as they lead this ministry. Our Saviour has made provision for our empowerment and

this can serve to enrich our lives and prepare us for the spiritual battle. Our change would be demonstrated in our Christ-like treatment of family members, church members, co-workers, neighbours, enemies and ourselves. Our deportment in our daily interactions should speak volumes of our relationship with Jesus. It is my prayer that as you celebrate, this experience will find us even more committed to Christ. I want to acknowledge and commend you for your discipline towards nurturing the other women in your congregation and for the impactful incessant ministry in the community. In a world that is declining in various ways, your love, commitment and continuous work in sharing God’s love, is of paramount importance.

Phoebe 5K Walk/ Run Claudia Mendez The Phoebe 5K Walk/ Run took place on March 8, 2020 in Portmore. It was an effective way of getting Adventist Christians from different churches to unite as one body and participate in an event together. Participants from the OHSDA Church included honorary Haydria Stewart, fit Fayona Mullings, competitive Carlagaye Douglas, courageous Claudia Mendez, spry Shaneilla Barker and resilient Roshan Griffiths.

It was seen that persons from different churches were conversing with each other instead of clinging with the persons from their church. For many, this was a form of exercise and it led to persons taking exercise seriously.

Due to the 5K, persons are now jogging more frequently in their communities having realized its importance. It has also served as a means of improving one’s mental health.

you are on a journey and persons may seem to be ahead of you but that does not mean you are not doing a good job. That does not mean that you are not trying. I have learnt not to allow distractions to prevent me from attaining my goals. I am sure that while participating, persons recited the popular Bible verse Ecclesiastes 9:11 which tells us that the race is not for the swift but for those who can endure.

Personally, I believe that the 5K was inspiring, I learnt an important lesson from taking part in the 5k. That lesson is that sometimes in life, 33

Message from Prayer Ministries

In order for the Prayer Ministries to meet the objectives there must be interaction and cooperation with the Women’s Ministries as with all other ministries and departments of the church. Prayer is the most important part of any ministry. It’s through prayer that direction is sought from God as to how to lead a department as well as how to be His disciple in all aspects of stewardship. No one knows us like God. Hence the importance of seeking God’s wisdom and guidance in all things. Nothing about the child of God is too insignificant to call to His attention. The more time we spend with God, the more we see our need of total dependence on

Him. John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” More Prayer.

Message from Prayer Ministries

Andrene Holness Prayer is the lifeblood of the church, thus the lifeblood of every Ministry. Without prayer the ministry will fail as we would be doing things of ourselves without guidance from the Holy Spirit. With prayer and supplication the ministry will strive.

Ilianne Parker-Samuels The challenges facing women particularly those who follow biblical principles for life choices are best handled through prayer. For example, it is notable that the sisters who get married before engaging in physical intimacy with their male partners tend to have great difficulty with child bearing and this becomes very emotional for women to handle. As a result, we draw on stories such as that recorded of Hannah which shows that only through prayer are many obstacles overcome.

Kamala Thomas Women are usually the ones in the family who are fervent in prayer. Therefore, the bedrock of faith. When a crisis arises, we find that women are always the ones who seek the Lord for an intervention in the situation or for Him to provide the solution required. Women tend to pray at the drop of a hat as they readily acknowledge that as Luke 1:37 says 'with God nothing shall be impossible'.

BIRTHDAY CLUB The Old Harbour SDA Church has an active birthday and anniversary registry for over 20 years. Each celebrant is called by the Women’s Ministries Leader and the birthday song is sung. Each one is special.

“Test turned Testimony” book was written by a teenaged girl who gained victory through the help of the church after being sexually molested by her father. A signed copy of the book will be available for anyone who needs to read it.

Women’s Social VSD House Party The Sabbath Day had ended.

The much anticipated evening had finally arrived. The Novel Corona Virus, COVID 19 had robbed us of our regular social without social distancing but we were not going to allow it to steal our joy. We were determined not to let it wipe away our smiles or hush our laughter.

Not too sure what this virtual social would look like, sound like or even feel like. We should have been on for 2 hours but we went way in excess of two hours. The host had to literally shut us down. Message from Men’s Ministry Leader

Old Harbour SDA Church in identifying varying issues and solutions from a woman’s perspective that often times would affect the church and by extension our community. As such, the Men’s Ministries Department hereby renews its pledge to compliment, encourage, support and offer our wholehearted service to the plans and varying strategies to be employed in the upcoming year. May we (Women’s and Men’s Ministries) continue to work together in love in the harvesting of souls for the Kingdom of our Heavenly Father.

I have acknowledged the fact that every single is an individual person. GEMS By: Teresa Reid- Dobson

“GEMS” Girls of Etiquette, Morals and Standards (girls ages 12-18 years) It’s a joy for us to work together as we try to hasten the coming of the Lord. The Children’s Department is blessed with almost 100 children ranging from 0-18years. In this department, talents include preaching, teaching and singing.

It was a delight to partner with the GEMS Girls program where they were educated about Etiquette and Social Graces. It was indeed a successful program. It is my prayer that God continues to give us wisdom and vision to lead His children.

Dr. Carol Fider shared on etiquette. She shared an interactive PowerPoint presentation. Sis Vonetta JohnsonHamilton then involved the “GEMS” in an eye-popping “what to do” and “what not to do” in a formal dinner setting. The prequel was mouth-watering leaving the girls Dr. Carol Fider

The session on table setting was filled with British humour. “Am I your cup of tea?” The talent show was decked with women clad in purple and teal elegance who paraded the runway with mini tea cups.

Khayla Harrisingh

First-form Glenmuir High student Khayla Harrisingh is among those being celebrated in this year’s sitting of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

The 13-year-old scored a grade one in CSEC human and social biology. She shared that the decision to sit the external exam stemmed from curiosity as she wanted a first-hand understanding of the exam concept.

Speaking of her decision to pursue human and social biology, Harrisingh said, “I chose human and social biology because it didn’t require a school-based assessment [SBA] and it didn’t take away from take away from my schoolwork. I also enjoyed learning about the systems of the body in grade six, and since my brother was doing the subject, I could borrow his books.”

She said preparing for the exams was not an easy feat, citing lack of Internet access as a hurdle. “My mom had to buy data, which was limited; so I had to strictly stick to reading on my own. I also had to juggle maintaining good grades at school while studying for this exam.”

Khayla, a former head girl of Marlie Mount Primary and Infant School in St Catherine, told The Gleaner that she is not surprised at her success. “I was expecting a good grade because of my hard work. I am very pleased.”

Khayla, who is eyeing a future in medicine, said she will not pursue any subjects this year, stating that her focus is to master navigating the sails on online school. “I hope to do some more subjects in third form, however,” she said.

Her mother, Georgette Harrisingh, said, “Khayla has always shown maturity beyond her age, so we supported her decision. I just reminded her that there was no pressure, it was just to expose her to the examination process; so once she did her best it would be good enough. I am happy we allowed her to do the examination. She worked hard and she was rewarded. Her dad and I are very proud of her achievement.”

Khayla shares the family spotlight with her 17-year-old brother Kyle, also a student at Glenmuir, who copped eight grade ones and a two.

TESTIMONIES “The deaf ministry found me.” What is my talent? My family members can play musical instruments and can sing. What was my talent? When I was about 12 years old I had a dream about a deaf child. One woman interpreted the dream to mean the deaf church is your child. This was the birth of my gift.

One summer I attended Pathfinder’s Camp at Camp Verley. A church sister taught sign language there for one week. After this, I went to assist my mom at Colbeck at the farm. I met a set of twin brothers who were deaf. I would communicate with them based on the little I learnt.

I started attending the Old Harbour High School in September 1991. On a daily basis after school, I would meet with some youngsters who were hearing impaired.

They taught me how to sign. With this knowledge I assisted some children to sign to songs since I could not hold a straight note. It is important to build a relationship with members of the deaf community by socializing, learning their language and yet not judging them.

For years, I recommended that the sign language class be a ministry of the church.

In 2012, Kelly-Ann Grant and I decided that we would become certified in sign language courses levels one and two at Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JD).

Level one included Introduction to Signing.

Level two involved Communication, Socialization and Interpretation.

An Adventist lady who has a deaf daughter discussed with Kelly and I how to grow the deaf ministry. Thus the Special Needs ministry was launched. In July 2016, Portmore SDA Church hosted a Day for the Deaf. This event was well attended and brought awareness to the deaf community.

I was a member of the advisory committee of ten that planned this event. The only deaf church in Jamaica is held upstairs the Portmore SDA Church. I am one of the interpreters.

My passion is to finish the work of the Lord. Matthew states every tongue, kindred and nation must hear the message before the end comes. These include the deaf community. Over the past four (4) years at least fifty (50) members were baptized. It is therefore difficult for them, since they require an interpreter to be understood in the general society. This makes them angry, oftentimes they are unable to work due to communication issues.

Since 2012 I am unable to hear from my right ear. An ear pin damaged the ear drum as I would use it to scratch. Therefore at times I speak loudly. The enemy has oftentimes tried to delay the work of the Lord by hurting my hands but God protects His messenger.

The deaf community is hungry for the word but we need help to interpret. I have completed level teacher's course 2019. I will return to upgrade in sign language to keep current. I am calling church members who are dedicated and committed to help with deaf evangelism. Converted members of the deaf community are the best to spread the word to their fellows.

Thanks to the pastors and children who have always assisted the team.

TESTIMONIES The Lord gave me this victory over heart problem. I did not believe the report of four doctors. I prayed and worshipped and the Lord answered in this song.

Since Jesus took my burdens In answer to my prayer My anxious fears subsided My spirit grew so strong Since Jesus took my burdens And left me with a song God is in control. I have experienced three grandchildren who died in my arms. My brother, sister and parents also passed on. Two children (one daughter and two sons) passed on out of six (6). All of my friends are deceased. It is not easy to experience such a great loss but I am still standing for His purpose.

I dreamt that I was going through woodland in the rain and I covered myself with cocoa leaf in a SDA church building surrounded with clear water. I interpreted that God is ready for me to get baptized. Bro Edgar took off her jewellery as she was in and out of church for many years. I brought them to pawn shop and received $110,000 for her jewellery.

Now without physical sight she gave us great insight into her amazing journey from youth to wisdom.

Editor’s Note: As an Adventist woman, I know firsthand how the stresses of life and the accompanying emotions can leave us feeling frustrated and alone. The Women’s Ministries of the church provides an avenue to share the struggles with those who understand. It provides opportunities to learn and grow not just spiritually but in all aspects of life.

Women’s ministries highlight the importance of women supporting women because, when women support each other, incredible things happen. This ministry is a blessing and I am honored to have made my contribution to its 25th Anniversary Magazine.

“For Other Women” I asked the Lord to give me hope by showing me the “purpose” of this process. “For other women” whispered the Holy Spirit. It is with this rationale in mind “for other women” that the Lord has prepared me for this ministry for such a time as this.
