Welcome Interested in the changing work environment, Denso is reimagining their space to accommodate a hybrid work environment. Understanding how different generations are adapting to coming back into the office, and how to attract employees to return to the office was an important aspect of Denso’s visit to the Steelcase Grand Rapids campus.

Steelcase brought Denso to our Grand Rapids campus to show how we, as a similar sized company, have adapted to hybrid work, and how we’re continuing to use space as a tool to inspire, invite, and intrigue our employees. With flexible applications, integration of technology, and spaces for employees to work individually, collaborate, socialize, and recenter, Steelcase was excited to show Denso the true power of space to help employees do their best work.

Learning + Innovation Center Opened in 2012, the Grand Rapids

Innovation Center provides an environment for industrial designers, engineers, marketing, project management and a host of other functions to translate insights into products and applications.

The Innovation Center also houses a robust model shop as well as a test lab, which support the product development process. In addition to Grand Rapids, Steelcase leverages a European Innovation Center in Munich, Germany and in Asia splits its resources between Hong Kong and Malaysia.

The Steelcase Innovation Center is a cross-functional plan that creates a safe haven for new ideas. With opportunities for individual and group collaboration across time zones and continents, it’s a place that fosters a culture of innovation through the creation, sharing and testing of ideas.

Innovation is a core business strategy for us.

The 325,000-square-foot space is home to 267 people and serves teams who are distributed around the globe.

As the team considered how to best support a culture of innovation, one of the paradigms they needed to shift was to move from thinking about home bases for individuals to homes for project teams. This meant they focused on spaces that would support team-based work, flanked by front porches to support individuals and small groups and back alleys where work moves from concept to reality.

The project studios, at the heart of the center, were allocated 40% of the overall footprint and are the places that product development teams call home. The studios have been carefully planned to support remote team members as well as those who are physically present.

Learning + Innovation Center Steelcase benchmarked nearly 30 higher education and corporate learning institutions to shape the vision for the Steelcase Learning Center. These benchmarking visits provided Steelcase the opportunity to better understand how learning can influence our organization as a whole. Rather than build a new facility, the decision was made to reclaim an unused portion of an existing Steelcase factory.

The integration of interior architecture, furniture, and technology infrastructure products made it possible to convert the factory into a high-performance learning facility.

Worklab Featuring the latest Steelcase products, the WorkLab environment allows visitors to experience the furniture and understand how it can enable them to create strong connections in the workplace between colleagues, information and the overall organization.

Launched in November 2008, a year later it was granted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first showroom in the office furniture industry to achieve the highest ranking available.

Leadership Community Leaders have been the drivers of the organization, responsible for decision-making and implementing their strategies down through the organization.

Steelcase researchers found that leadership practices that worked in the past are no longer the most effective ways to operate globally integrated enterprises.

TestLab Steelcase North America has three test laboratories: Grand Rapids, Michigan; Amex and Reynosa, Mexico.

These labs are certified to International Standard ISO/IEC 17025, accredited by registrar, LAB (Laboratory Accreditation Bureau). In each lab, rigorous detailed testing processes are performed to BIFMA standards and Steelcase TPS. Product test results are maintained in a corporate report database.

Business Center The Steelcase Business Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan was built in 1983 and was originally designed for efficiency and evolution. This 5-story, 385,000 square foot building is home to 800 employees who support all corporate functions. The office areas are a working showroom and a laboratory for studying people, the ever-changing nature of work, and how physical space can make a difference.

Over 25 years old, Global Headquarters is now an example of how space can evolve in a more fast paced, and complex globally integrated business climate.

Smart + Connected There is growing recognition that a well-designed workplace can be a destination — where it’s easy for an individual to get work done and where people want to connect with coworkers to engage in a shared purpose. A workplace that helps us be our best selves supports the social nature of work by creating environments to foster team-building and collaboration.

Connected spaces can also help keep organizations in touch with what people need from their workplace, enabling leaders to make better decisions and be more agile.

Real-time data on how employees are working within their environment can inform an organization about how to focus energy and resources with confidence. This allows changes to be made more quickly, providing for a more productive, dynamic work environment.

Design Principles A WorkCafé is a dynamic space that connects people with colleagues, their work and their organization. It transforms traditional corporate cafeteria real estate into destinations for connection, collaboration, focus and innovation.

When creating a Resilient Workplace, consider the intentional combination of five spatial typologies (zones), designed to accommodate and anticipate changing organizational and employee needs.

The size, ratio and adjacency of each zone should be tailored to match both your business objectives and cultural expectations. The result is an agile workplace that supports change, rather than resists it.

The Evolving Workplace: 2 East North 2E North is the first space at Steelcase’s Grand Rapids campus to be completely redesigned to meet shifting employee expectations and new work processes as a result of the pandemic.

To understand the impact and how Steelcase’s long-term workplace strategy will need to change to better support both the needs and expectations of employees as well as the organization, Steelcase engaged its Applied Research + Consulting (ARC) team to get a pulse check on employee sentiment.

The ARC engagement helped guide the changes we made to our space.
