Native But Nice!

ith a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden.

Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door.

The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives!

Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the triking red poppies which adorn the fields mid-way through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers.

foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested.

The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor.

For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs.

Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants … they’re born survivors!

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded.

Going Batty!

hen you think about bats what springs to mind? Do you imagine vampires or spooky haunted houses? Do you imagine the horror of getting one tangled in your hair?

International Bat Night is held on the last weekend in August and hopes to change our perception of bats. During this annual celebration, bat events for the public will take place across the country. There will be bat walks and talks organised by bat conservation groups, wildlife trusts and park rangers at a venue near you.

Bats are fascinating creatures. They make up just over a quarter of the UK’s mammal population and they are the only ones that can fly. Britain is host to eighteen native species plus occasional migrant visitors.

Pipistrelles are the commonest British bats.

They weigh just 5 grams (less than a £1 coin). Bat populations are under threat from predation, crime and loss of habitat so UK bats and their roosts are now protected by law.

Many people who profess not to like bats cite their wings as the reason but bat wings are actually beautiful pieces of biomechanical engineering.

Bat wings are constructed in a similar way to human hands, only with membrane of skin stretched between the elongated, delicate fingers. Bat bones are not hollow unlike bird bones - but they are very slender and flexible. Because their wings are much thinner than bird wings they can manoeuvre more easily at speed. They are also more vulnerable to damage but tend to heal very quickly.

The old saying about bats in the belfry is a bit of a myth. In fact, bats rarely seek out church towers, preferring somewhere quiet, and less draughty. They favour houses, both old and new, and cause few problems as they come and go. They are neither noisy nor smelly and householders are usually unaware of their presence.

If bats do set up home in your roof, their access must not be impeded. If you’d like to encourage these interesting little creatures to your garden you can buy or make specialist bat boxes to fix to outside of your home to encourage them to take up residence. Weight Gain During Pregnancy

lot of mums-to-be become very A concerned about their weight during pregnancy. Whilst it’s good to keep tabs on how much weight you’re gaining, you mustn’t let it make you feel anxious.

Most pregnant women during their first trimester will put on somewhere between 0-9-1.8kg, and this will continue an increased rate during your second trimester, yet may slow down during your third.

Your Midwife will be able to give you an indication of how much weight you should gain and this will vary according to:

The additional nutrients required during pregnancy only equate to around 200-300 calories per day.

• Your height • Your pre-pregnancy weight and BMI • How many babies you’re expecting

If you’re of average height and weight, generally, by the end of your pregnancy, it’s normal for you to have gained between 11.25-16kg, as a guide.

Every pregnancy is different, so don’t judge your weight gain by other pregnant women.

Whilst some “weight gain” IS increased body fat, the rest is actually made up of lots of other things: a) your baby, b) your placenta, c) amniotic fluid, and d) the increased levels of maternal blood and fluid

Be sure to embrace your pregnancy, embrace your bump, and embrace your unborn baby therein.

Get The Conversations Started!

or some reason teens and pre-teens F begin to think it’s a great idea to retreat to their bedrooms and shut you out of their lives for the next few years. Unfortunately statistics on teen emotional well-being show that this is no way to go.

Hi, my name is Anika Vassell and I support and inform parents of the benefits of holding on firmly to the apron strings and keeping connected to their teens. I’m a former teacher of Psychology and PSHE at The West Bridgford School and I have over twenty years of experience in working with children and teenagers in a variety of settings.

If you have started to get grunts of acknowledgement or explosive reactions that leave you ‘tangoed’ (remember that ad?) then this is the column for you. I’ll be writing here in Spotlight, to give you some tips that will keep you connected and communicating throughout their ‘tricky’ (to put it mildly) adolescent years.

For this holiday period why not ensure that you spend at least ten minutes a day, 1:1, with your teen. Schedule it in if you have to. That’s without distractions; no TV, no calls, no Snapchat etc., etc.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure of how to start the conversation. Ten minutes is a long time for silence – they’ll soon find topics of interest to fill the air space. Sit down or better still, take a walk together. Ten minutes 1:1 – let’s get the conversations started!

Bach Flower Remedies

orn in 1886, Edward Bach was an English doctor, bacteriologist and pathologist, who was conducting research into vaccines when he became interested in a more holistic approach to medicine.

Dissatisfied with the tendency to treat the disease rather than the whole person, he began collecting plants and in particular flowers - the most highly developed part of a plant - to find remedies.

He believed that illness was the result of internal conflict, and that negative moods such as unhappiness, fear or worry, caused a lack of harmony which ultimately manifested themselves in physical disease.

By correcting this emotional imbalance, illness could be treated or avoided. “Health depends on being in harmony with our souls,” he asserted.

The flowers are divided into seven groups: Face Your Fears gives courage, reassurance and peace of mind to the fearful.

Know Your Own Mind helps with feelings, and can increase decisiveness and a sense of direction.

Find Joy and Hope overcomes feelings of despondency, despair and self-doubt.

In this way he identified 38 flower remedies that can be used alone, or in conjunction with others to treat emotional and spiritual conditions.

In addition, Bach developed the Rescue Remedy, which is a ready-made combination of 5 flower essences that can provide comfort and reassurance for daily stressful situations.

The remedies are usually taken orally by mixing with water, although they are also available as droppers, sprays, liquid melts and pastilles. Only a few drops are required which should be taken several times a day. In some cases results can be instant, whilst in others it could take several days for any benefits to be realised.

There is little scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of Bach’s Flower remedies, and some claim that any benefits experienced are due to the Placebo effect.

That said, they have now been in existence for over 80 years, and there are plenty of testimonials available on the internet giving credence to their effectiveness and healing properties.

Your Pension Is Changing

he Government has announced major T changes to UK pensions, which will affect everyone.

So what is changing? Will you be affected?

Will you be better or worse off?

Greater access From the age of 55 you will be able to take your whole pension pot as a lump sum; 25% will be tax-free with the rest added to your income and taxed at your highest marginal rate of 20%, 40% or 45%.

Later Retirement Currently you can take your pension (excluding the State Pension) from 55, but from 2028 you will have to be older. The earliest you will be able to take your private or workplace pension will be 10 years before your State Retirement Age, which is also rising.

Guidance Guarantee Everyone will be given free guidance and information on the options open to them when they retire. This will compliment, not replace, the advice given by Independent Financial Advisers.

So is it good news or bad news?

Although the greater flexibility will be welcomed by many, you will need to plan carefully to ensure you, and your spouse or partner, don’t run out of money and that you take advantage of the new rules in the most effective way.

The Beach Is Back!

ottingham’s Old Market Square has again been transformed into an urban beach, open to visitors from Saturday 19 July – 2 September 2014.

The beach attracts thousands of families, visitors and tourists from across Britain to the city and offers Nottingham City residents a chance to enjoy the seaside without leaving Nottingham. Now in its sixth year, the event includes a giant paddling pool, 250 tonnes of golden sand, a themed fully licensed beach bar, rides and lots of FREE activities for all the family over the summer.

Quick & Easy Cleaning Tips

You love a spotless house—but you don’t want to spend the bulk of your time actually cleaning. Well, fret no more.

We talked to experts who gave us some of their best methods to make chores easier, more effective and much less time-consuming, so you can have a tidy, sparkling home in no time flat.

Zap the Sponge: We all know that sponges can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfect yours every night by squeezing it out and microwaving it on high for a minute. When it’s shredded and smelly, replace it.

In The Kitchen - Circle Your Way Around: Always begin on the right side of your stove, then move clockwise around the room. The stove is typically the dirtiest part of the kitchen, so ending with it keeps you from spreading dirt and grease.

Sanitise the Sink: It’s hard to believe, but your dirty kitchen sink has more bacteria than your toilet seat. To disinfect, clean your sink with soap and water first, then spray a mist of vinegar followed by a mist of hydrogen peroxide, and let air-dry.

(Don’t mix the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide together—spray one after the other.) If your sink is stainless steel, make it sparkle afterward by putting a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and buffing.

This prevents water buildup, which deters mold and keeps the sink looking clean longer.

Love Your Oven: Keep the heart of your kitchen clean by lining the bottom with a nonstick ovenliner. It can be wiped with a paper towel, put in the dishwasher, and reused over and over.

Crumple Paper Towels…Forever: Use microfiber cloths instead. When wet, they sanitize and clean floors, counters, glass and tile, and eliminate the need for other cleaning products. They’re reusable (machine-wash, hang to dry) and cost about £5 for a two-pack.

Clean as You Go: Fill your sink with hot soapy water as you start dinner. “Place used dishes and pans in the filled sink so they’ll be soaking while you

In The Bathroom - Make Doors Shine: Rubbing a teaspoon of lemon oil on glass shower doors twice a month causes water to bead up and roll off.

Get a Cleaner Liner: Mold and mildew attacking your shower curtain liner? Throw it in the wash with a few towels, which will help scrub it clean, then hang it back up to dry.

Tame the Toilet: Drop a teaspoon of Tang Drink Mix in the bowl. The citric acid acts like a scrubber…and it’s nontoxic, in case the dog takes a sip. Let it sit for a few minutes, then swish and flush.

Start with the Bed: If your bed is made, your bedroom looks neat, says Marla Cilley. When you wake up, pull the covers up to your chin, then scissor-kick your way out of bed so it’ll be half made. Finish the job before you walk away.

Conquer Laundry and Stave Off Static: Since fabric softener and dryer sheets can strip towels of their absorbency, add ¼ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle or throw two (new, clean) tennis balls in your dryer to get rid of static electricity, soften fabrics and eliminate the need for dryer sheets.

Switch on the Cold: Most everything can be washed in cold water (better for your bills and the environment). But use the hottest water possible for sheets, towels and underwear.

Take special care with undergarments, putting them in the dryer as soon as possible to stop bacteria growth while they sit damp in the washer.
