vitality | activity and recreation

Within the innovation cluster, we found it important to provide a retreat from the technology focused functions of the site, to promote healthy lifestyles, while at the same time forming a connection to the city by drawing all types of people. Our solution was a hovering form that cantilevered a large portion of itself over a harbor area that features a biking and canoeing center. This harbor area formed the main connection to the city via the Hank Aaron State Trail and the various water ways of the area.

vitality | health and wellness

The program offers a variety of opportunities for exercising healthy habits for both the body and mind. In addition to cardio and strength theaters; an aquatic area with a scuba pit, holistic health clinic, suspended running track, rock wall, and sloped roof lawn provide ample ways to relax or rejuvenate one’s self. Using steel as a construction theme, as designated by the course description, super sized members were assembled from standard sized pieces, helping achieve the desired form and large span spaces.

Balconies are provided for every suite and overlook the Milwaukee river to the north.

great lakes institute | unique dwellings

In order to create student housing that felt like a home and not an institution; I developed five unique living suite arrangements to give each a sense of identity. These arrangements consist of a combination of single, double, living, and cooking areas. Each suite has a balcony, and colored entrance nooks help to further differentiate each unit. The southern facade employs operable shades within a double envelope to take advantage of its solar exposure to reduce energy demands for heating and ventilation.

(1) The space as a whole is made up of individual areas defined by material and furniture arrangements. (2) Vertical access between floors is located within these spaces to draw students in. (3) Study Niches are located separate yet near to encourage good group study habits. (4) Occupant controlled windows & shading allow for optimal spatial climate control.

Within each communal space are smaller shared spaces that serve as resources for student living on its floors. The space is arranged in a way designed to encourage interaction between students. A double height space and stair interconnect floors and open the lower living floor with the media/study areas above. The tech lab features a smart board for collaborative use in academic endevears. Sound proof naturally lit study niches provide more areas conducive to good study habits.

The primary focus of this project was the development of an intelligent enclosure system that appropriately addressed context and orientation. A classical three-part parti: base, body, cap was utilized in addition to matching the floor heights of “The Manhattan Building” by William Le Baron Jenny in order to be a good neighbor and complete the aesthetic of the block. A double glass envelope was utilized for the majority of the building to provide a thermal barrier to the elements while at the same time allowing for natural sun light and views out.

bar stool design awarded “1st place”

As a freshmen architecture student at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, all students must design a piece of furniture that is voted on by the entire school of architecture faculty and student body. My bar stool entry was unanimously selected as the winner and was prototyped by Nemschoff Inc., a furniture company out of Sheboygan, Wisconsin that specializes in healthcare furniture design and production. Being able to sit in something the previously only existed in my mind was a defining moment in my educational career.
