President’s Message

Dear Community Members,

The Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators (ONABSE) is here for you.

Since our inception, it has been our goal to serve educators, students and families of Ontario by enhancing and facilitating the education, health, safety and welfare of African-Canadians.

The concept of this directory wasdeveloped by former ONABSE Board Member, Robert Small of AfricanCanadian Entrepreneurs for Success (ACES) for ONABSE. Our goal for the directory is to respond to the needs of our community by amplifying and supporting Black-led and Black-focused businesses and organizations which cater to Black youth each summer. We hope it serves you well!

ONABSE welcomes the brightest, the best and most importantly, those determined to make a difference. If you would like to become a member or to learn more about us, please visit our website www.onabse.org.

You can connect with us directly by sending an email to info@onabse.org or through our social media channels.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CAMP:

A history There are great new camps in this directory However, operating a camp for several years and with the same staff does mean something.

A philosophy What is the guiding focus of the camp? How is this philosophy integrated into its programs? Do you agree with it?

An emphasis on creating community. Good camps think about how they place kids together to create the most inclusive experience for all.

A well-trained staff and an adequate camper to staff ratio: An adequate campers-to-staffers ratio is about 10 to 1 for kids ages 8 to 14. The staff should be background-checked, too, with references, an interview, and a criminal-records search.

A communications plan for letting parents know about upcoming events, and for notifying them if a child becomes sick or injured.

HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY:

1. Review all the camps and programs in the Table of Contents.

2. Select a camp or program that you are interested in.

3. Contact the camp or program and ask questions you want answered (ie: camper to staff ratio)

4. Register for the camp or program through their website or contact details.
