Declaration for School Libraries

During April, Richland One joined school communities across the nation in the American Library Association’s Libraries Change Lives campaign. Instructional Technology Services coordinated “signing ceremonies” beginning at the district headquarters on April 11. Dr. Mack and Dr. Brathwaite joined Alexzena Furgess, District Library Media Advisory Chairperson, Ida Thompson, and Diana Carr to sign the first page of a large book designed by Dr. Dale Bosworth. Joining the signing was George Washington himself, portrayed by Dreher High School Drama student, Brice Hall.

From the Director It is hard to believe that another school year is ending! During 2013-2014 many opportunities have presented themselves for growth and professional advancement. Instructional Technology Services is finalizing plans for a great summer of activities to help district staff continue their professional learning. Special Reading Programs Two special literacy events dominated the scene in April, highlighting the fun that reading brings to the lives of students of all ages.

Richland Library hosted the 28th Annual Augusta Baker Celebration of Stories on April 25-26 featuring author Pat Mora. Classes from six elementary schools participated in the storytelling for fourth graders at the Robert Mills House and Gardens. Special thanks are extended to Elizabeth Gregory (J.P. Thomas Elementary School) one of the storytellers and cadet units from Eau Claire and A.C. Flora for their participation.

On April 10, nearly 2000 enthusiastic readers participated in the 2014 Statewide Read-In. This year’s host was Jenny Wirtzberger of WLTX-19. The theme was “Oh, the Places You Can Go, based on the popular Dr. Seuss title.

 Video Conferencing Featured at Statewide Conference Brenda Boyd (Keenan), Elizabeth Gregory and Dr. Dale Bosworth presented a concurrent session at the recent SCASL Conference held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Keenan students demonstrated ways to read to younger children through a video conference, while Ms. Gregory presented an overview with examples of ways to have video conferences in the media center. Dr. Bosworth concluded the presentation by presenting options for virtual learning experiences.

News and Notes SCASL Book Award Committees Instructional Technology Services is pleased to host the statewide SCASL Book Award committees as they work to select the nominees for next year’s four award programs. The committee’s first meeting was held May 2 at Olympia and will continue on August 9, October 4 and December 6. Any administrator, teacher, parent or student interested in joining next year’s committees can contact ITS. Copies of nominated titles for this upcoming school year are available from ITS to help you jumpstart your reading.

New Publication

We are proud of: Elizabeth Kohut (ITS) and Paula Matthews (Sandel Elementary) for their participation in a recent taping of the SCETV’s Technology Insights Program which aired May 4. The program highlights successful practices and programs which advance the effective use of technology in our state’s schools. Ida W. Thompson (ITS) who has been nominated to chair the Supervisors Section of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). The three-year term supports collaboration among library media supervisors and educational leaders across the country.

Meet Congressman James E. Clyburn on June 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Books-A-Million Village of Sandhills as he discusses and autographs copies of his new book, “Blessed Experiences.”

Jennifer Thornsberry, Angie Enlow and Paula Matthews (Sandel) for being invited to present at the SC Induction Symposium. The symposium, sponsored by CERRA and Newberry's RETAIN Center of Excellence, is designed to provide opportunities for beginning teachers to gather ideas and resources, network, and develop as a teacher leader. The symposium will be held July 9-10, 2014 at Meadow Glen Middle School in Lexington, SC.

Retiree’s Welcomed Back For the past three years, the department has sponsored an open house event for its retirees during April. It has proven to be very successful and popular. They have taken field trips to tour new schools and library media centers, had classes on mobile technology tools and participated in video conferences. The open houses provide

an opportunity to share information on the department’s activities and work taking place across the district. They are encouraged to join the district’s volunteer programs and visit often. A luncheon, hosted by the Instructional Technology Services staff concludes each open house.

The retirees participated in a video conference with the Center for Puppetry Arts.
