Veterans Hone Their Technology Skills Instructional Technology Services is pleased to support our local veterans in a special project to provide technology education instruction. Each Tuesday at noon the group visits the Olympia labs for instruction on various technology tools and topics. Dr. Karly Warren is the program coordinator and Darnell Russell is the instructor. The veterans are enjoying learning and appreciate having access to the nice training facilities at Olympia. Their first class began January 7th and continue through May 6th. We appreciate their service to our country and their dedication to improving their knowledge and skills. The staff is honored to be working with these outstanding citizens and veterans.  A class participant receives one-on-one instruction from Darnell Russell.

USC Board of Visitors and Cocky’s Reading Express Visit Excitement filled the air at South Kilbourne Elementary on Friday, March 22 as an excited student body and faculty welcomed Cocky’s Reading Express. This special visit included members of the university’s Board of Visitors, headed by Tommy Preston, founder of Cocky’s Reading Express during his tenure as USC Student Body President. In addition to several fun stories read by Cocky and the Board of Visitors members, the students each received a copy of the popular book, Pete the Cat and an official “I Promised Cocky” sticker. From the Director Ida W. Thompson

During the past two weeks, I have had the opportunity to participate in and attend several events across the district and in the community. They included the 39 th Annual SCASL Conference, Annual 100 Women Reading Event at Horrell Hill, FAAAC RedCarpet Awards Ceremony at the Columbia Museum of Art, the Annual Technology Showcase Event and submission of books for the Visual Literacy Festival Book Production Contest. Each of these events had a common thread – student engagement and participation. Whether they were performing musically, serving as hosts, receiving awards and recognitions or sharing new ideas, it was obvious that these venues provided a forum for collaboration, engagement and leadership. This underscores why it is so important to infuse each day with interesting and challenging experiences that allow our students to think, create, share and grow – the four basic themes of the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner. These standards, coupled with the Common Core State Standards, provide a strong foundation for the skills and dispositions our students need for future success. They certainly reflect the Chinese proverb that states: "Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I'll remember. Involve me, I'll understand."

Richland One’s Annual Technology Showcase The Olympia auditorium was standing room only as hundreds of students, teachers and staff assembled for the Technology Showcase program. Featured on the program were robots from Dreher and Keenan

High School’s CATE students, recognition of teachers who are leading the way with use of technology tools and winners in the Visual Literacy Festival Computer Technology/Video Awards Contest.

 Students Explore Augmented Reality using iPods in Richland One Imagine living in a magical world, where the school hallways are lined with paintings that are alive and interactive. Augmented reality allows educators and students to do just that: unlock or create layers of digital information on top of the physical world that can be viewed through an Android or iOS device. Students participated in augmented reality lessons during the Emerging Technolo-

gy Conference at Perry Middle and Sandel Elementary School’s Math, Science, and Technology Day. Students used iPods and the free app, Aurasma, which allows users to engage in augmented reality experiences. There are endless ideas and possibilities for using augmented reality.
