Harlem 100yr Celebration

Page 1

The first thing we need to say in this celebration of 100 years of Huskie Hoops is that boys basketball actually goes back more than 100 years at Harlem. There are stories on Harlem basketball dating back to 1912. Records almost never were included and games rarely included scoring summaries. In 1923-1924, the Rockford Morning Star ran a season preview along with a schedule and ran scoring summaries. That’s likely why the 1923-1924 season is the first “official” season when you look at the history of Harlem basketball on the IHSA.com website. So that’s why we are celebrating 100 years of Huskie Hoops in 2023-2024! Harlem was a basketball power from the start. From 1930-1931 to 1956-1957, Harlem won 15 conference titles in three different leagues. Despite that success, Harlem won just one District or regional championship before 1970. That’s because back when the entire state played for one state title, eventually Harlem would run into Freeport or Rockford schools, which were, at that time, 10 times larger. By 1963-1964, Harlem was big enough to enter the Big Eight, now known as the NIC-10, which meant it was playing schools as big or bigger on a nightly basis and the wins have been harder to come by. The Huskies have had some solid seasons. Harlem has four regional titles in the Big Eight/NIC-10 era, two conference titles to its credit and three 20-win seasons. The 2020-2021 team was likely to join that list, but the team played a limited schedule because of the COVID-19 pandemic and finished 10-4. Although Harlem is still waiting for that next great team to surpass the 25-3 mark in 1935-1936, it has had a number of great players. Morrey Scott, who still holds the school’s all-time rebounding record, played for Northern Illinois University. Mike Floyd, who remains the all-time leading scorer, played for Texas A&M. Mike Hidden, the last of three Hidden brothers to play at Harlem, went on to play for NIU as well. Eric Palm, an early 2000s star, played more than 10 years of professional basketball in Europe. Dozens of others have made an impact at the NCAA Division II or Division III level or in NAIA. Three Huskies players came back to become Huskies head coaches - Clyde Peterson, Don Tresemer and Chad Barger. We’ve had five NIC-10 scoring champions in Floyd, Rod Ekberg, Rob Ferger, Mike Hidden and Justin Van Wambeke. Nine Harlem players have scored more than 40 points in a game. The first 50-point game in conference history was Harlem’s Mike Hidden in 1987. One thing to know about the statistics that follow in this book is that they aren’t complete, not by a long shot. Rebounds weren’t kept before the 1960s. Assists weren’t included in stats until the late 1960s and we don’t have stats other than scoring for the first three years of the Chuck Schultz era in the mid-1970s. The stats from the Don Tresemer through Jim Leix era are mostly complete, but then the numbers after Leix until Mike Winters are extremely spotty. The coaches in that era saved most of their data on a stats computer in the basketball office. That computer was dead when Winters took over as coach in 2017 and we’ve only been able to find a handful of full seasons, a couple partial seasons and some individual statistics provided by players during those years. We believe, or at least we hope, that there are printouts of those years somewhere just waiting to be rediscovered.
