NOTES ABOUT THESE NUMBERS

The statistics from 1961 to 1974 were compiled using boxscores from the Rockford Morning Star. The Rockford newspapers would run full boxscores of conference boxscores and playoff games. The newspaper did not run the boxscores of the non-conference games in early April so all of these seasons are missing a handful of games from each season.

Beginning in 1975, we were able to recover full season stats, or in the case of the years of Ken Franzen and Bill Girling, we found the actual scorebooks and compiled the stats using the books. Beginning in the 1970s, high school teams began using wood bats and hitting statistics began to rise.

The pitching statistics from Girling’s first three seasons (1992, 1993, 1994) are incomplete. Even though we found the books, these weren’t strong teams and it’s unclear in many games when the Huskies changed pitchers.

In 2012, the IHSA passed rules restricting the liveliness of the bats and home runs in high school play dropped sharply. In 2017, the IHSA passed rules restricting how many pitches a player can throw in a game and in a week, meaning the single-season pitching records are unlikely to ever be broken.
