It is crazy to think that four years ago the first musical I was directing here in Durand – the first play or musical being done in a DECADE - was put on a shelf because Covid brought the world to a screeching halt. I am still so sad that the world didn’t get to see that production because it was so good and would have blown our audiences away. When all of that happened, I could only dream that what is happening for Fine and Performing Arts today would ever be a reality. Since then, we have produced a virtual play when we still couldn’t perform in person, mounted one play, and The SpongeBob Musical will be the third musical to be seen by audiences in my time here. Next year our junior high and high school students will have the opportunity to take classes in theater and we are looking at a FOUR SHOW SEASON! None of this would have been possible without the support of the Durand School Board, our administration, and many of my fellow teachers. In addition to those people, my husband has cheered me on in this endeavor even though more shows can oftentimes mean more nights at home alone for him. There are not enough words to describe how much he and his endless support mean to me. To the students who have helped to lay the groundwork for the Drama Program here in Durand, I am grateful that you have pushed yourself out of your comfort zone to try new things and create a (sometimes dysfunctional) family where anyone is welcome to find a home. To the parents of the kids involved in Durand Drama – thank you for supporting your kids, playing chauffeur, finding costume pieces…. and so much more. Beyond all of that, thanks to those parents and families who have gone above and beyond to help and have been an amazing support to me when times are stressful or hard. To those of you who are in the audience, thank you for being here to cheer these kids on and off the stage. Theatre doesn’t exist in a bubble, and we need you here to make what we do has a purpose.
Many people have asked me, “Why SpongeBob?” What makes it even funnier is that my own children were not allowed to watch the show. I always thought it was a little bit crass and lowbrow for kids. But the musical is a different thing altogether. The SpongeBob Musical finds the characters in peril as Mount Humongous is set to erupt and wipe out all of Bikini Bottom. While some use this crisis as a moment to take advantage of others, SpongeBob does all he can to save the town he loves. It is an insurmountable task that he cannot complete alone. The SpongeBob Musical worked its way into my heart because it addresses issues that we all experience. Is there more to us than what others take at face value? Are we worthy of being seen and heard? Is there a place where those who feel like they don’t fit in anywhere else can belong? These questions are tackled in a way that leaves everyone with the answer that everyone has a place, has value, and should realize that who we are is what makes us special. I hope that when your time in Bikini Bottom comes to an end you leave with a smile on your face, a song in your heart and the knowledge that all are welcome here.
Enjoy the show!
