Director’s Note When London’s theaters were closed during the bubonic plague from 1592 to 1594, William Shakespeare was out of work as a playwright, an actor, and a director. During this time, however, he was able to put food on the table by writing his 152 sonnets. His sonnet-writing allowed Shakespeare to master his craft as a poet, and the first four plays he wrote after the plague have become known as his “lyrical plays” because they make use of iambic pentameter more than anywhere else in his career. Those plays include: Richard II, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Romeo & Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. When we set out to stage our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, one of the first things we discussed as a company was Helena’s line to Demetrius in Act IV: “And I have found Demetrius like a jewel, / Mine own, and not mine own.” Helena’s revelation occurs only after a hopelessly confusing night in the forest wherein she (along with Hermia, Lysander, and Demetrius) is unknowingly taunted and charmed by mischievous fairies. Helena “awakens” to realize not only her true feelings for Demetrius, but she also acknowledges that her soulmate is his own person. The idea that “no one belongs to anyone” sounds simple enough, but in staging our production, we discussed the deeper meaning of Helena’s line: true love (whether romantic or platonic) can only happen when all parties involved acknowledge each other’s autonomy. While during our rehearsal process, we explored the underlying wicked nature of Midsummer’s seemingly virtuous characters, like most of Shakespeare’s comedies, Midsummer concludes with a wedding wherein everyone lives happily ever after. That being said, in the play’s opening scene, we learn that Theseus, the Duke of Athens, has “acquired” his bride (Hippolyta) after conquering the Amazons, and Hippolyta is indignant about the whole situation. The irony, of course, is that Theseus all but forces a young Athenian woman (Hermia) to marry a man against her will (at the request of Hermia’s parent, Egeus). While the lovers must trek into the forest and experience a night of terror, doubt, and arguing to purge them of their wickedness, it seems Theseus has a change of heart simply by listening to the lovers’ report of their evening in the woods. In our everyday lives and relationships, we may not experience the same kind of magic that the characters in Midsummer do, but if we follow Theseus’ example and allow ourselves to listen more intently, keep an open mind, and ask forgiveness when appropriate, our relationships can be more meaningful, and may even be charmed by the grace of deeper, mutual understanding. Finally, we can learn a lesson directly from the Bard’s life as well: in the face of adversity, Shakespeare saw the opportunity to hone his craft, and in so doing, bettered himself because of it. While we can’t all be one of the greatest known alchemists of the English language, we can (and should) devote ourselves to transforming our hardships into hope.

- Mr. Christian Frieden
