DEAR STUDENT-ATHLETES AND PARENTS,
Welcome to Winnebago High School and to the 2023-24 School Year. As your Activities Director, I am looking forward to the start of another great year. The 2022-23 school year was filled with tremendous accomplishments both on and off the field and this year’s programs have worked very hard to continue the success of Winnebago High School. We remind all spectators that high school sports are an extension of the classroom and that lessons are best learned when proper respect is given to all who attend tonight’s contest. Please let good sportsmanship show during the game. The schools of the Big Northern Conference recognized the importance of good sportsmanship and the rewards of healthy competition. The officials are assigned by the Big Northern Conference and registered with the Illinois High School Association. The Big Northern Conference school boards, administrators, teachers, coaches, and athletes support good sportsmanship. Our conference schools expect nothing less of our fans that attend the events.
CODE OF ETHICS FOR SPECTATORS
•Attempts to understand and be informed of the playing rules. • Appreciates a good play no matter who makes it. •Shows compassion for an injured player; applauds positive performance; does not use profane or obnoxious language or behavior directed towards the players, coaches, or officials. • Respects the judgment and strategy of the coach, and does not criticize players or coaches for loss of a game. • Respects property of others and authority of those who administer the competition. • Respects officials and accepts their decisions without gesture or argument.
CODE OF ETHICS FOR PARENTS OF ATHLETES
• Encourage your child and team - be enthusiastic - show school spirit. •Maintain a positive attitude whether your team is winning or losing. •Refrain from being insulting or showing bad sportsmanship during the competition. Any problems or concerns should be brought to the attention of the coach or the athletic director at another time. Remember it is only a game. • Support the team with team sponsored events, such as fundraising, phone trees, 50/50, or concessions. • Parents, as spectators, are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship at all times. Spectators, including parents, who, in the judgment of the principal, athletic director, and/or site administrator, behave in ways that are inappropriate will be warned about the behavior and then will be asked to leave the competition. •Respect the judgment and strategy of the coach. • Do not criticize players or coaches for a loss. • A 24hr notice is needed if wishing to talk to a coach or the Athletic Director. Questions concerning playing time, strategy, etc will not be answered before or after a game.
