Director’ s Notes

Hello and welcome to Hononegah’s Performing Arts Center!

Thank you for joining us for this performance.

In a magical mixture of song, dance, and story, the beautiful book and score of Mary Poppins shares lessons to be learned by both the young and the young at heart. Our hope is that you will be compelled to take the story with you beyond the walls of this production. Upon Mary’s arrival to the Banks’ household, the practically-perfect nanny takes measurements of the children before getting to work. As we reflect on our own measurements in our lives, we may find ourselves feeling overwhelmed with stressors big and small alike. As Mary brings to light lessons for Jane and Michael, we can take in Mary’s reminders of sharing our joys and sorrows with each other, of being there for those who need us most, and of finding hope in our desire to keep learning. It is a true joy to have observed our students demonstrate their desire to learn together in preparing to share this story with you today. I encourage you to escape into the stories told before you and to always remember “Anything can happen if you let it.”

Fondly, Mrs. Carolyn Frieden Director About the musical

Based on the children’s book by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, the Mary Poppins musical is based on the story of a British family and their new, eccentric nanny. Through her lessons, Mary teaches the children how to be proper citizens and aids in self-reflection between George Banks and his childhood, and the Banks’ relationships. The musical was adapted by Cameron Mackintosh and went on to win a Tony Award for Best Scenic Design and multiple Laurence Olivier Awards. Mary Poppins has seen many international touring productions, and it is a very popular choice for school and community theaters. Despite deviations from the film, the musical still tells a beautiful story of family and love.
