Hello, and welcome to Hononegah’s Performing Arts Center! Thank you for joining us for this performance, for supporting our students, and for patronizing local theatre in our community. When selecting a play to produce, two questions always drive my decision: why this play, and why this play now? Mary Chase was inspired to write Harvey upon witnessing a neighbor grieve the death of her son in the Pacific War, according to a profile article in the Saturday Evening Post. With the hope of making her neighbor one day laugh again, Chase began writing. Harvey premiered on Broadway in November 1944 to incredible success. Chase would even go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama the next year, beating Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie. What was it that drew mid-1940s Americans to this play? For one thing, the news about World War II was negatively affecting the American public and psyche. Instead of following Mary Chase’s example and providing solace to our neighbors, we often give in to fear, allowing today’s dread-filled headlines to divide us. We find ourselves placing strangers, friends, and families in boxes based on how they react to and cope with our world. According to the encyclopedia kept in Chumley’s Rest, a pooka is a “fairy creature in animal form” from Celtic mythology that is “wise but mischievous.” While Harvey does have a “function” to slow down, manipulate, and even stop time, he does not abuse this power, aside from pulling the occasional prank. Harvey is only ever simply there which means one is always welcome to see Harvey if they allow themselves to see him. In a lot of ways, this play is an admonishment for how we ought to live our lives. While our world is filled with darkness and despair, if we open ourselves up to each other, engage in genuine fellowship, and truly see one another, we too can appreciate the beautiful mystery of our world that Elwood sees whenever he interacts with his invisible best friend. I invite you now to enjoy–and learn from–our production of Harvey.
