Letter from Athletic Director Rebecca Hoffman Welcome to Harlem High School.

I am excited to culminate the 2021-2022 athletic season. It has been quite a year! We are honored to have you as our guests today. The NIC 10, in conjunction with the IHSA, has been working to stress the importance of sportsmanship at all athletic events in our conference as well as across the state. We ask that everyone present today demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout this contest as well as throughout the season. We also ask that you follow the updated IHSA guidelines as we navigate through Covid-19 and any repercussions from the pandemic.

Educational based athletics provides children with the opportunity to grow in many different areas, but most importantly success beyond what the scoreboard says. I ask the question of “Why do I coach?” to the coaches. I believe that high school athletes should ask themselves a similar question, “Why do I play?” Sports can build character, but it can also tear apart a person’s character. It is important that athletics make a positive impact on a student, rather than a negative. This year, this is especially important. All of us, parents, teachers, coaches, administrators, want our student-athletes to have the opportunity to play their seasons to the best of their abilities. This season it is especially important for everyone to understand the importance of educationally based athletics to our athletes, both mentally and physically.

Thank you for supporting Harlem Athletics. I ask that you continue your support with positive and uplifting cheers, and comply with all building, conference and state guidelines. I ask that you exhibit the highest level of integrity and pride for our athletes, and that we represent Harlem with dignity and class.

Letter from Superintendent Terrell Yarbrough It is my honor to welcome you to the 2021-2022 sports season. I am proud of our athletic programs and what it means to be a Harlem Huskie both in the classroom and during the season. Our athletic director has created a culture of respect that coaches and athletes display throughout all events. I am excited to see not only our programs have a safe and successful season, but also the relationships that are built through our commitment to sportsmanship. Brad is in his 19th season as varsity girls soccer coach. He has been coaching in both the boys and girls soccer programs for the past 24 years. Brad graduated from Illinois State University and is currently a driver education teacher at Harlem High School. Brad has a 19 year old daughter named Alexis and a 13 year old named Sophia. He is also a graduate of Harlem High School.

Kurt Head begins his 6th year as Harlem Varsity coach. He was head Varsity coach at Hononegah for 4 years, 6 years as the assistant coach. He has been NIC-10 coach of the year 3 times. He also coaches 3 years at Rock Valley as the assistant softball coach, 4 years as a travel ball coach for Stateline Fury where they were 2 times State Champions for 13U and 16U, and 16U National Champions. He was a 1997 Harlem Graduate.

Scott McCloy enters his 6th year as Head coach and 13th coaching baseball at Harlem. Scott is an Army Combat Veteran and graduate of Northern Illinois University. He is currently a Physical Education Teacher at Harlem High School. Scott has been married to Nicole for 16 years and he has a 13 year old daughter named Addison and 9 year old son, Maddux.

This is Nate’s 1st year as head coach. He has been with the girls track program for 10 years. He is a graduate of Harlem High School (2007) and obtained a LBS1 from Northern Illinois University (2021). Nate is working on his LBS 2 from National Louis University. He currently teaches Special Education at Harlem High School.

Gretchen Kuchinski begins her 2nd year as Harlem varsity coach. Coach Kuchinski has been coaching boy’s volleyball in the area for the past 8 years including Guilford and East. Gretchen is a graduate of Guilford High School (2012) and is a preschool teacher at Rockford Lutheran Academy. She has a 5 year old daughter named Avery.

This is Jared’s 1st year as Head Boys Track and Field coach at Harlem and 2nd year as the distance coach for the program. Jared is a graduate of Harlem High School (2006) and the University of Illinois (2010) where he competed in track and field and cross country. He enjoys biking and spending time with friends in his free time.

Bill Dredge

Head Boys Tennis Coach Coach Dredge has been coaching in the Harlem School for the past 47 years. He has had many different coaching assignments during that time. He has been the boys’ varsity coach for 41 years. The highlights of his coaching career include developing many lasting relationships in and around the Rockford community.

Bill graduated from Aurora College and has a Masters Degree from Northern Illinois University in Physical Education. His family includes his wife, Gayle and daughter Cathy and a son, Joe.
