WELCOME TO THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) AT DBIS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) consists of FS-1 and FS-2 and is the first part of the children’s learning journey in our Primary School. The EYFS campus is located close to Discovery Bay South Plaza and is purposefully designed to meet the needs of children between the ages of three and five years old. Our FS-1 and FS-2 children follow the EYFS Curriculum of England. Our curriculum/learning experience is adapted and personalised to suit our international context and is delivered through an inquiry-based pedagogy that is progressive in nature as children move through the Primary School. The non-statutory ‘Birth to 5 Matters’ guidanceisusedtosupportthedeliveryofourcurriculuminEYFS.

Our Primary School places the children at the centre of all that we do. In EYFS, our approach to teaching and learning is inspired by the principles of Reggio Emilia, where respect,responsibilityandcommunitylieattheheartofourpractice.Weviewchildrenas havingextraordinarypotentialforlearningandtheabilitytoformtheirownunderstandings of the world around them. Our focus is upon nurturing creative, resilient and independent learnerswhoareexcitedandconfidenttoexperimentandexplorethroughactivelearning.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning and the DBIS Learner Profile provide the foundations to support our children in becoming lifelong learners and critical thinkers. Supportingthedevelopmentofdifferentlearningdispositions,behavioursandhabitsisan important part of our approach to teaching and learning in EYFS as this builds strong foundationsforfuturelearning.

Our children are supported to take risks, think critically and develop understandings through exploration and inquiry. This experience is underpinned by our child-centred, personalised learning approach, which supports the development of the whole child and recognisesthewonderofchildhood.

Teachers and educational assistants are seen as partners and co-constructors in the children’s learning journeys, ensuring learning is continually placed in a meaningful context by engaging with the children’s interests and ideas. Our children experience authenticlearningopportunitiessuchaswoodwork,ForestSchoolandBeachSchool,and we pride ourselves on our child-led, Reggio Emilia-inspired learning environments, which supportopportunitiesforopen-endedinquiry.

We place great importance on positive relationships and interactions amongst all members of our school community as these support our holistic and inclusive approach. EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

IntheEarlyYearsFoundationStage(EYFS) of the Primary phase, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for England, which is tailored to meet the needs of our unique international community. We believe play and inquiry are powerful tools for children’s learning and that they promote the highest standards of learning and development at thisstageintheirlearningjourney.

Our DBIS Curriculum Handbook provides more detailed information of our EYFS Curriculum and approach to teaching and learning.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING

Young children learn most effectively when they feel safe, are engaged and are having fun. Children’s learning becomes really meaningful when they are free to inquire and learn at their own pace and in their own way. Learning at DBIS EYFS is facilitated through play and inquiry as well as through quality adult-directed and child-initiated experiences, inspired by the children’s interests and our EYFS curriculum. The children’s strengths are identified so that we can meet each child at their stage of development to ensure success and progress along their personal learningjourney.

Our EYFS curriculum is complemented by our specialist teaching in Music, Mandarin, Physical Education (PE) and Learning Technologies (LT). In addition, our children visit the library on a weekly basis. Our Forest and Beach School programmes, and our woodwork (Carpenters’ Cabin) opportunities, help to provide authentic learning experiences for our children, enabling them to rehearse and practise skills and enrich their learning. Our experiential learning opportunities support the development of the whole child and help cultivate attributes for lifelong learning.

From the day that they are born, children are powerful learners. They can develop strong behaviours, habits and dispositions that will support them throughout their learning journey and help them to self-regulate both cognitively and emotionally. It is our job as adults to foster theseattributesandcharacteristicsineach child as they grow and control their processesofthinkingandlearning.

In the Foundation Stage, our environments arecarefullyplannedtoensurethechildren are able to develop these characteristics.

The three characteristics of effective learningare:

● Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things and‘haveago’;

● Active learning – children concentrate and keep trying even if they encounter difficulties, and they enjoy achievingwhattheysetouttodo;

● Creating and thinking critically –children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and developstrategiesfor doingthings.

THE DBIS LEARNER PROFILE

The DBIS Learner Profile further supports the children to grow as learners and global citizens. In the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, our Learner Profile Characters support the children in becoming familiar with each attribute and with how the attributes support their growth as a learner. GENERAL INFORMATION

EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS

A range of extracurricular activities (ECAs) is available to all children at DBIS. Each term, you will be notified of the ECAs available to your child’s age group and provided with information on how to register an interest in joining. There is no limit to the number of ECAs your child can join; however, some have a maximum capacity.

The majority of ECAs at DBIS are offered free of charge; however, there are some paid activities delivered by external providers. Any paid selections will be invoiced to parents directly by our finance team.

ECAs for FS-1 children start in Term 2, once they have settled into school and are completelysettledintoallthenewroutines that come with attending school for full days.

PICK UP CARDS

We expect all children in EYFS to be collectedfromschoolbyanadult.Children will be dismissed one by one from their classroom to the care of their supervising adult.

In order to maintain the highest standards in safeguarding and child protection, you will need to apply for DBIS photo identity cards for the people who will pick up your child on a regular basis. The names of these adults should be communicated to yourchild’sclassteacher. A link to the applicationformisHERE.

Ifyouarrangeforyourchildtogoonaplay date or to be picked up by someone who is not on the regular pick up list, you will needto inform yourchild’s class teacher

andensureyouprovide their fullnameas they will need to verify their identity when collecting your child. We will never release a child to someone who is not on the pick up list without arrangements being made prior.

VALUABLES & TOYS

We recognise the importance of engaging with the children’s interests in order to enhance the learning process, so please do keep us up to date with your child’s interests as they emerge so we can reflect these within the learning environment.

We kindly ask that, unless requested specifically for a topic by your child’s teacher,personaltoysremainathome.

SMART WATCHES

ChildreninEYFSarenotpermittedtowear smart watches. If your child begins to show an interest in telling the time, we recommend purchasing a simple analogue wristwatch.

LOST PROPERTY

At the EYFS campus, all lost and found items are handed to Ms Angel at the front desk. We ask that all student clothing is clearly labelled with the child’s name. At specific times throughout the year, we will putalllostandfounditemsondisplay,and if unclaimed, we will donate these items to oneofourschoolcharities.

SCHOOL NURSE

If a child becomes unwell whilst at school, they will be taken to the school nurse. The school nurse will evaluate the child’s medical condition and decide if they need to be collected from school. The time of handover to a parent or caregiver is noted, and the classroom teacher is made aware.

If a child has a minor complaint or accident, the school nurse will administer first aid and care in the medical room. In the case of a more serious concern, the school will contact the parents and/or emergency services and will make medical decisions based on doctor’s recommendations. Parents will be systematically informed if the school contacts emergency services,but it may not always be possible to do this in advance of making an emergency call.

The school’s nurse is not authorised to administer mild medications, such as paracetamol, without parental permission. Prescribed medication can be administered on completion of the Prescribed Medicines Permission Form linkedHERE.Pleasenotethatalthoughthe school provides limited medical insurance for all students whilst they are in our care, the insurance may not cover all medical costs.Therefore,parentsshouldmakesure that students have sufficient medical coverage in addition to what the school provides.

PERMISSION FORMS

School trips form an integral part of our school curriculum, and we like to immerse our children in learning outside the classroom wherever we can. We have immediate access to the mountains and beaches here in Discovery Bay, and the children love to learn outside. All parents are asked to sign an online permission form at the start of the year, which gives children advance permission to attend all localschooltrips.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

It is very important for the school to have complete, up-to-date information about all of our children and those whom we may needtocontactincaseofemergency.

It is also imperative that you let the school know of any allergies, medical conditions or ongoing medication your child has. Student Medical Profiles can also be updated via the our Parent Hub HERE Thesedetailsmustbekeptuptodateatall times.

LEAVE REQUESTS DURING TERM TIME & ABSENCES DUE TO ILLNESS

Requests for leave during term times must be submitted for approval via the Parent Hub. Absences for sickness should be reported to school on the first day and any subsequent days. If your child is absent due to having a fever, they can only return once they have been free of a fever for at least24hours.

PARENTAL ABSENCE

Pleasenotifytheschoolifyouareplanning to take a trip out of town for more than a day. This will help us to support your child when they are with us in school. The school office will require details of appointed guardians and emergency telephonenumbers.

SCHOOL CANCELLATION

Please familiarise yourself with the school’s Severe Weather Policy regarding the closure of school. The school website will display weather warnings and notification of school closure where applicable.

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS

To withdraw a student, notice must be given not less than 60 days (excludes July and August) before the student leaves the school. This can be done by completing the jotform HERE. If students are not returning to DBIS after the summer holidays, official notice must be given 60 days before the last day of term. The school will charge school fees in lieu if the abovenoticeperiodisnotadheredto.

Positive communication between home and school is essential. Our communication system utilises the

THE PARENT HUB

The Parent Hub is our main platform for communication between school and home. All communication to parents regarding upcoming events and information can be found on the Parent Hub. Any calendared event will have a parent bulletin on the Hub approximately two weeks prior to the event taking place. All bulletins are sent to parents in a consolidated email each Saturday so that parents can organise the forthcoming two weeks. The Parent Hub also contains the current DBIS school calendar, which details term dates as well as the dates of allupcomingschoolevents.

ISAMS PARENT PORTAL & APP

Parents can access all student-specific information via the iSAMS Parent Portal and app. This platform is used to communicate confidential information about your child, such as school reports and attendance data. The app can be downloaded free from the App Store and Google Play Store. The school code is DBIS, and you will need your personal iSAMSusernameandpasswordtologon.

SCHOOLSBUDDY ACTIVITIES & TRIPS PLATFORM

All information about your child’s extracurricular activities (ECAs), fixtures, camps and trips can be found via SchoolsBuddy. Parents can log in to SchoolsBuddy using their iSAMS login details to see all of the activities their child isinvolvedwith.

CONTACTING TEACHERS

We operate an open-door policy at DBIS, and you will see your child’s teacher each morning and afternoon when you drop off and collect your child. This is a great time for short, incidental conversations. If you wish to arrange a longer meeting, please do so by emailing Ms Angel in the school office at atang@dbis.edu.hk, and the email will be forwarded to the teacher directly.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Each Friday, the school’s newsletter is emailed to parents. The newsletter provides a snapshot of the week’s events acrossallphasesoftheschool.

DBIS WEBSITE

The school’s website, linked HERE, is a window into the school, giving parents access to information on all aspects of the school’s operations as well as teaching and learning approaches. The website also provides parents with a link to the Parent Hub.

STUDENT SAFETY

Student safety is paramount to us here at DBIS, and even within our extremely safe Discovery Bay community, we need to

ensurethatchildrenarereadytoactcalmly and appropriately in the event of an emergency.

FIRE DRILL

Fire drill procedures are carried out each term and involve all staff and students. In the event of a fire, all Foundation Stage staff and children are evacuated to the car park in front of the school gates, where classrollsaretaken.AnemailandSMSare sent to all parents following a successful fire drill or evacuation, informing them that allstudentsaresafe.

LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

Lockdown procedures are usually carried out once or twice a year and involve all staff and students. In the unlikely event thattheschoolcampusneedstobelocked down, all blinds and windows are closed, andallstaff and studentsstaysilentlyand

safely in a locked area until the all-clear is given over the school tannoy system.

Again, parents are informed by email and SMS that all students are safe following anydrill.

GUEST VISITORS TO SCHOOL

Any visitor, including ex-students as well as family members or helpers of students attending DBIS, must sign in to the EYFS campus at the front desk during school hours. Outside these hours, visitors need to report to the Main campus office. All visitorsarerequiredtowearavisitor’spass at all times whilst on school grounds. Visitorsarenotpermittedtoattendclasses with students. This is to ensure learning is not disrupted as well as for insurance liabilityreasons.
