Devel o p in g c om p a n y b r a nd through r edesign: D BI d e s i g n s th e new hea dqua r ter s f or

introduction

As an enterprise IT company that develops missioncritical software for the federal government, A-TEK, Inc. relies on the vigor and distinction of its brand to stand out from its industry competitors and to attract topnotch talent. The company, to foster its market identity and establish a strong presence in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, hired DBI to consolidate its two offices into one new headquarters in 2016.

DBI embarked on A-TEK’s project by conducting programmatic visioning sessions— meetings in which DBI’s design team and A-TEK’s key stakeholders discussed the company’s existing and desired workplace standards and physical space needs; communications structure and workflow processes; work culture and environment; staff composition and preferences; and objectives, brand, and strategy. DBI, after analyzing the information gathered during visioning, developed a program articulating A-TEK’s quantitative and qualitative requirements, which included the development of larger workstation space standards to facilitate an open, team-based working environment; the right-sizing of offices to

accommodate required meeting areas; the implementation of low-panel workstations and glass walls to provide visual connectivity among staff and to enhance the flow of natural light; and, perhaps most vital to bringing about A-TEK’s desired transformation, the top-to-bottom, resonant branding of the company’s new home. Having established a basis for planning and design direction, DBI and A-TEK scouted three possible spaces for the company’s new headquarters and selected one in Tysons Corner, Virginia, a location that provided proximity to A-TEK’s chief clientele. As a start-up in 1996, the company had one office in Leesburg, Virginia for nearly 16 years. In early 2012, A-TEK relocated from Virginia to Ellicott City, Maryland and leased two offices to accommodate staff living in either state. Although these new offices received minor updates, they still did not reflect the company’s mission or brand. Now, 20 years later, as an established firm that had defined its identity within its industry, A-TEK was eager not only to “put down roots” and sign a 10-year lease but also to announce and highlight its brand throughout its new space. The company set about rebranding itself, focusing on its logo—a triangular “arrow” divided into quadrants of color that represent A-TEK’s key client industries, including federal civilian, national security, medical, and law enforcement sectors. DBI, interpreting the logo as a distillation of A-TEK’s mission and brand, proceeded to base the entire design for the company’s new home on this simple, yet elegant, symbol. The logo’s four colors (lime green, lipstick pink, and sequin and sky blue) provided the foundation for the office’s overall palette. When designing to illuminate a brand, DBI often

weaves corporate logos, colors, and values throughout a space, merging these elements into a unified design approach. Yet basing the entire design strategy for A-TEK’s 10,000-SF office on a single shape found on the company’s business card was particularly creative and resourceful—and demonstrates how powerful and inspiring even the simplest design concept can be. “It was so rewarding to watch something simple and small transform into something great,” Project Director Michael Boyer comments. Having identified the company’s logo as the project’s conceptual core, the design team proceeded to develop a comprehensive strategy.

The DBI team explored the logo’s geometric variations and, ultimately, created a sculptural web wall by tilting and rotating its quadrant boundaries. Recognizing the originality and dynamism of this shape, the designers began to conceptualize its transformation from a micro to macro scale—from the company’s business card to a monumental branding wall in its new reception area. Uniting brand development with the design process, DBI first handsketched the “web wall” and, next, collaborated with millworkers to determine how the web’s components were to engage. After countless design and materials variations, the “web wall” was installed opposite the reception desk as the main backdrop to the seating area. A multi-layered composite of resilient MDF (medium-density fiberboard), the white web structure distinctly projects from the substrate, forming multiple inverted arrow shapes in the form’s negative space. A-TEK’s four corporate colors light a single arrow within the wall, providing a focal point.

A-TEK’s contoured and colorful arrow logo inspired the office’s wayfinding elements and signage by providing directional impetus and organizational structure. As visitors enter and proceed through the space, the arrow appears not only as a branding statement, but also as a graphic gesture encouraging circulation along a general route. DBI also implemented the use of “color families,” wherein each corporate color and its associated hues separate and identify different office zones. Running along every internal glass window, colored film bands and arrows further delineate these areas and provide a simple visual cue for navigating the space. In addition, each of A-TEK’s four conference rooms is finished in one of the company’s four corporate hues. In the breakroom, these colors are playfully bundled to emphasize the space’s collaborative and jovial nature. Even in the workstation area, the company’s brand is highlighted through the application of a wall covering, spanning the entire space, that superimposes “textual snapshots” describing A-TEK’s divisions, services, methods, and customer sectors over its signature web wall graphic.

While staying within budget, the DBI team sought to infuse as much high-end design as possible and, to this end, reused several architectural features from the existing build-out, including all ceiling tiles, doors, and hardware, as well as some lighting—a costefficient approach that also decreased the project’s environmental footprint. Completed on time and within budget, A-TEK’s new headquarters not only unifies the company’s presence in the Washington, DC region, but also reflects its organizational identity, mission, and culture through the thoughtful and creative extrapolation of brand throughout its design. “A-TEK had the pleasure of working with Michael Boyer and his team at DBI Architects on our new office project. Using our new brand, coupled with their creativity, attention to detail, project oversight, and a genuine desire to ensure our project would be exceptionally pleasing to us, Michael and his colleague Kaitlin Dyer guided us from start to finish. From the unique architectural design, color palettes, furniture selections, and light fixtures, to the proper placement of white boards on the walls, they covered it all. Working with this team made the project less stressful because I was confident that Michael had our best interests in mind, stayed within the budget, and worked to make sure the project was delivered on time. I know who to call when I’m ready for the next project. We couldn’t be happier with our new space in Tysons Corner, VA and are grateful to have worked with Michael Boyer and the team at DBI.”
