This 17,500 SF house was designed to serve as the meeting point for the client’s large family gatherings. The simple massing and contemporary material palette of charred wood and weathered steel represent a departure from the client’s traditional current home and a fresh start for their life’s next milestone. As a epicenter for the growing family, the program was to include and balance entertaining spaces, recreation features, and the living requirements of the occupants. It includes an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, fi tness loft, sport court, bowling alley, golf simulator, arcade lounge, serving bar, of fi ce suite, and garage space for 6 vehicles. The balance of this expansive program and robust exterior materials juxtaposed with lavish interiors exempli fi es the MaMo brand of luxury and grit.

Nestled on a hillside in the Brandywine River valley, this bucolic site pleaded for a cozy agrarian design. The clients sought a rustic, but re fi ned aesthetic that featured character-grade materials and imperfect hand-crafted details to ful fi ll their vision. To respect this beautiful site, the project was presented as a re fi ned cottage serving as the main living quarters tucked between two barn-like structures that house the guestrooms, art studio spaces, and garage. The visual impact to the hillside was mitigated by dividing the program into 3 structures and stepping the massing with the site. The landscape architects were engaged early to deliver site-driven design that would feature a meadow of wild fl owers and grasses that would complete the clients’ dreams for their property.

This series of prototypes began as a business partnership enterprise with a modular home builder to deliver luxury modular residences. The partnership, in its infancy, aims to offer clients a customized home shopping experience that would begin with a base template and be modi fi ed by preset options. These would include the roof, siding, lighting design, furniture package, and others. MaMo identifi ed a gap in the modular architecture industry that could deliver luxury homes in a shortened construction schedule, which would be ideal for secondary or vacation homes. Two different schemes are depicted here that would serve as a base point for a client to customize. The single story prototype features two exterior material options while the larger model displays a modern furniture package.
Already a previous client of MaMo, the owners of this project requested an overhaul to the existing pool house that served as an outbuilding to their MaModesigned main house. The clients sought an aesthetic and material palette that would compliment their residence, but also wanted to reprogram the structure. It was rarely used as a pool house, so they opted to indulge their hobby of botany and convert it to a plant potting shed. The new design provides a sanctuary to enjoy their craft and lounge by a small wood stove in the operable corner window bay overlooking the water. The half-bath would still be a facility of the adjacent pool users.

This project aims to renovate a close colleague’s vacation home that would update its styling while providing more functional space for the owner. Ironically enough, the home is owned by a notorious Philadelphia architect who entrusted MaMo to design the project. The entire envelope would be reskinned with shou sugi ban wood boards, the sunroom was expanded, and a new garage and connector were designed to function secondarily as covered entertainment space. The screened room on the rear deck was removed while a exterior fi replace was added. The styling of the railing and landscape below it were adopted a Japanese aesthetic. The interior was also opened up by removing several partitions. Before and after shots are shown here for contrast.
